The G-Tunnel heated block experiment is being conducted on the Nevada Test Site (NTS) as part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations project (NNWSI). The purpose of the ambient temperature testing ph se is to evaluate rock-mass mechanical properties of a block (- 8 m3) under biaxial stress changes up to 7.5 MPa above an initialization in situ value of 3.1 MPa. Results indicate that the modulus of deformation ranges from 9.7 to 17.0 GPa and Poisson's ratio ranges from 0.21 to 0.33. In general, the higher values of the modulus and Poisson' s ratio were influenced by fracture propagations parallel to the compressive stress field. Other measurements indicated that cross-hole compression (p) wave velocities and single fracture permeability values were relatively insensitive to stress changes above the in situ value.

Coal and coal mining is no longer the mighty king of industry and in our daily lives and homes that it once had the privilege of commanding. Many of you will remember that one of the chores of your youth was to bring in the scuttles of coal, morning and night, to feed the heater or stoke the furnace in the morning and bank it at bedtime. Growth of gas and oil have displaced coal in home furnaces and commercial buildings, and have taken over some segments of industrial markets. The coal burning locomotives have virtually disappeared in favor of the more efficient diesel engine. However, coal as a prime mover still holds its strategic position as is evidenced by act that the electric power industry almost entirely depends upon coal for its generation.

This report presents results of an investigation undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the clay content of typical petroleum reservoir sands in Wyoming and the effect of clay content on the permeability behavior of the sands. These results should have significance in determining the feasibility of injecting water into the sands for secondary recovery and in estimating the probable damage incurred by these sands if invaded with filtrates from water-base drilling muds. The results of air-, brine-, and water-permeability determinations are given for reservoir sands in three Wyoming fields. The amounts of materials of "fine silt and clay size" (Wentworth scale) in the sands and the types of clay minerals present, as identified by X-ray diffraction methods, are also presented and discussed.

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. Port-able equipment was then acquired and a simple screening plant (Figures 1 and 1a) was at first used. This was later replaced by heavier, more versatile equipment. Large-scale ultrafine grinding tests of a coarse kaolin were made using the Bureau of Mines developed attrition grinding process in continuous open-and closed-circuit systems. A 20-inch diameter attrition grinder, designed and constructed at the Tuscaloosa Laboratory, was used. Studies included single- and multiple-stage open-circuit grinding, and also continuous grinding tests in closed-circuit with a 6-inch-diameter solid bowl centrifuge. Clay feed, containing 9.0 percent minus-2-micrometer esd, was used at fates up to 840 pounds per hour. Multistage grinding tests gave better results than single-stage treatment when equivalent clay feed rates were used. Closed-circuit grinding tests yielded ground products containing slightly more minus-2-micrometer-esd clay than the open-circuit grinding when using the same clay feed. Energy consumption was lower in closed-circuit grinding than in batch or open-circuit grinding. A modified two-stage closed-circuit grinding system gave the best grade of product and amount of minus -2-micrometer-esd clay produced per pound of clay feed. The ground product from this test contained 88.5 percent minus-2-micrometer-esd material and electrical energy consumption was 327 kilowatt-hours per ton of minus-2-micrometer-esd material produced.

The effects of the injection of dry limestone additives into boilers for the sorption of sulphur dioxide have been studied in pilot and full-scale systems. The effects of such injections on boiler mass particulate emissions as well as collectability characteristics of the fly ash and reaction products are presented. Implications of the effects on the design and economics of particulate collectors, in particular electrostatic precipitators, are discussed.

A number of recent studies 1-4 suggest that steelmaking expansion might be achieved more economically by a combination of the prereduction furnace and the electric steelmaking furnace rather than through new blast furnace construction. Supergrade concentrates would be the first step in an evolving technology which bypasses the blast furnace and in which the concentrates are first made into pre¬reduced pellets and then used directly in electric steelmaking, Prereduced pellets made from superconcentrates should not only be competitive with scrap, but should be a preferred feed for the electric furnace because of the absence of such residual elements as copper and nickel. Furthermore, geographic areas remote from present steelmaking centers may find the electric furnace to be an economical method of providing local steel requirements. The development of successful methods of producing superconcentrates may also be expected to find application to conventional blast furnace burdens. The need for methods of increasing grade of domestic concentrates will become increasingly urgent in the face of competition from high grade imports. Only a small percentage of domestic iron ore production can qualify as superconcentrates, (Superconcentrates for the purpose of this investigation are limi¬ted to those concentrates which contain a maximum of 2 percent S'02). During the last several years the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines has directed research efforts to develop methods of manufacturing superconcentrates from present standard grade products by cationic flotation, screening, and magnetic separation.

The 1100°c isothermal, sections of the V-Fe-Si, V-Co-Si, and V-Ni-Si systems were studied at silicon contents between 0 and 40 at. pct. The single-phase fields in the 30 and 50 at. pct Mn sections of the 1100°C tetrahedron of the V-'Wn-Fe-Si system were also determined. The direction of extension of the elongated O, R, D, and a-Mn Phase fields suggests that the stability of these phases is determined largely by the electron concentration. The peculiar shape of the above ternary a phase fields, as well as of the a phase fields in the V-;Mn-Si and Cr-MTZ-Si systems is accounted for on the assumption that in manganese-(iron-, coball-, nickel-) rich alloys silicon atoms do not exclude d electrons , while in alloys low in the above components they do. This assumption also leads to the expected electronconcentrations for q and ß-Mn phases formed by transition metals with aluminurn. In earlier work it was shown that in ternary alloy systems of transition elements the a a and certain other phases with complex structure, such as the p and R phases,3 form elongated phase fields extending in a direction corresponding to a constant electron concentration. Recently similar behavior was observed in manganese-rich ternary ß-Mn solid solutions with another transition element and with silicon, germanium, or tin,4 confirming earlier indications3 that ß-Mn is also an electron phase. The alloying behavior of silicon in these manganese-rich alloys sug- gested that the four outside electrons of silicon participate in the bonding and that the predominantly d-like bonding electrons are not excluded from the silicon sites. Presumably, some of the normally unoccupied 3d states associated with the silicon atoms are in these alloys lowered to the Fermi level;4 thus silicon behaves as if it, too, were a transition element. The manganese-rich boundary of the a phase in the V-Mn-Si system,4 as well as in the Cr-Mn-Si sys-tem,4,5 extends approximately parallel to the ß-Mn phase boundary, corresponding to the transition ele-mentlike behavior of silicon described above. However, at lower manganese contents (i.e., in the high-vanadium or -chromium region) the a phase field in both ternary systems mentioned extends in a direction roughly perpendicular to that of its manganese-rich boundary, a phenomenon that is apparently inconsistent with the behavior of silicon in the manganese-rich alloys. A similar, although somewhat less pronounced, extension of the a phase occurs also in the high-vanadium (low-iron) region of the V-Fe-Si system at 1175C, but reportedly not in the V-Co-Si or V-Ni-Si systems at the same temperature.5 The present work was undertaken to investigate in more detail the extension of the a phase (as well as of other electron phases that may be present) in the last three systems and to elucidate this phenomenon, which has not been satisfactorily explained previously. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Most of the alloys were melted in an arc furnace, using a water-cooled copper crucible under helium atmosphere. The transition metals were of better than 99.9 pct purity and the silicon used was 99.98 pct pure. Alloys containing less than 20 pct V were induction-melted in recrystallized alumina crucibles under argon atmosphere.

The identified helium resources of the United States were estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at 617 Bcf, as of December 31, 1992. This includes 285 Bef of demonstrated reserves, 85 Bcf of demonstrated marginal reserves, and 37 Bcf of demonstrated sub-economic resources. The identified resources also include 166 Bcf of helium in inferred reserves and inferred marginal reserves and 44 Bcf in inferred sub-economic resources. The identified helium resources contained on Federal lands are approximately 172 Bcf, including 32 Bcf in underground storage in the Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX. Undiscovered helium resources in the United States are estimated at a most likely volume of 104 Bef, with a maximum volume of 249 Bcf and a minimum volume of 41 Bef. Also reported are 51 Bcf of helium in nonconventional and low-helium-content natural gases. Extraction of helium in the United States occurs mostly from natural gases produced from the Hugoton gas area in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and the Riley Ridge area in southwest Wyoming. Helium extracted from natural gas in the United States in 1992 was 3.3 Bcf. Some shortfalls in helium supply may occur in about 5 to 10 years.

A consolidated porous medium is mathematically modeled by networks of irregularly shaped, interconnected pore channels. Mechanisms are described that form residual saturations during immiscible displacement both by entire pore channels being bypassed and by fluids being isolated by the movement of an interface within individual pore channels. This latter mechanism is shown to depend strongly on pore channel irregularity. Together, these mechanisms provide an explanation for the drainage-imbibition-hysteresis effect. The calculation of steady-state relative permeabilities, based on a pore-size distribution obtained from a Berea sandstone, is described. These relative permeability curves agree qualitatively with curves that are generally accepted to be typical for highly consolidated materials. In situations where interfacial effects predominate over viscous and gravitational effects, the following conclusions are reached. 1. Relative permeability at a given saturation is everywhere independent of flow rate. 2. Relative permeability is independent of viscosity ratio everywhere except at very low values of wetting-phase relative permeability. 3. Irreducible wetting-phase saturation following steady-state drainage decreases with increasing ratio of nonwetting- to wetting-phase viscosity. 4. lrreducible wetting-phase saturation following unsteady-state drainage is lower than fir steady-state drainage. 5. Irreducible nonwetting-phase saturation 101lowing imbibition is independent of viscosity ratio, whether or not the imbibition is carried out under steady- or unsteady-state conditions. Experiments qualithtiveIy verify the conclusions regarding unsteady-state residual wetting-phase saturation. Implications of these conclusions are discussed. INTRODUCTION Natural and artificial porous materials are generally composed of matrix substance brought together in a more or less random manner. This leads to the creation of a network of interconnected pore spaces of highly irregular shape. Since the geometry of such a network is impossible to describe, we can never obtain a complete description of its flow behavior. We can, however, abstract those properties of the porous medium pertinent to the type of flow under consideration, and thus obtain an adequate description of that flow. Thus, the Kozeny-Carmen equation, by considering a porous medium as a bundle of noninterconnecting capillary tubes, provides an adequate description of single-phase flow. With the addition of a saturation-dependent tortuosity parameter in two-phase flow to account for flow path elongation, the Kozeny-Carmen equation has been used to predict relative permeabilities for the displacement of a wetting liquid by a gas. 1-5 It has long been recognized that relative permeability depends not only on saturation but also on saturation history as we11.6,7 Naar and Henderson8 described a mathematical model in which differences between drainage and imbibition behavior are explained in terms of a bypassing mechanism by which oil is trapped during imbibition. Fatt9 proposed a model for a porous medium that consisted of regular networks of cylindrical tubes of randomly distributed radii. From this he calculated the drainage relative permeability curves. Moore and slobod,10 Rose and Witherspoon,11 and Rose and Cleary12 each considered flow in a pore doublet (a parallel arrangement of a small and large diameter cylindrical capillary tube). They concluded that, because of the different rates of flow in each tube, trapping would occur in one of the tubes; the extent of which would depend upon viscosity ratio and capillary pressure. The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance is reviewed.

The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost-has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this exceedingly interesting subject. In the working up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of hisfriend Mr. F. J. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer isbetter than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant.Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of regulating factors before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems.

Variography was introduced by Dr. Pierre Gy to monitor a process, in the sixties. Later on, Francis Pitard extended this concept, building a complete system of variographic controls for different applications. Nevertheless, the existence of information about its use as a way to effectively control plants has been limited. There are infinite areas where variography and chronostatistics can be used. In this paper, two different cases related to gold and silver recovery, through well known but complex metallurgical routes are studied. The use of effective management of process variability software (EMPV) has shown to be a suitable solution to clarify problems at the plant and, consequently, a solution to the encountered problems has been proposed. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in depth way. Once the ore has been extracted from the mine, sampling is necessary at each sequence of the metallurgical process involved. As a first example, leaching of the ore with cyanide in agitated tanks is another case of a complex metallurgy. The aim of the process is to know about residual values in the tailings in order to optimize process. As a second example, leaching of gold and silver in ore heaps, has to be optimized in terms of time, reagents consumption and, of course, in predicting a reasonable recovery. This last issue appears to be crucial. After cyanide leaching at the heaps, a carbon in columns process is involved, where there are a series of carbon loaded columns that are submitted to a dynamic process of load and unload, to finally deliver an enriched solution to the precious metal electrowinning plant. In both cases, variography has been a good approach to show metallurgists ways to improve the operation.

Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar o efeito da adição de minérios com diferentes comportamentos a alta temperatura (assimilação e penetração de fase líquida) nos indicadores de processo em uma sinterização piloto. Para isso, seis sinter feeds foram caracterizados e, em seguida, submetidos ao ensaio de sinterização, considerando diferentes misturas a sinterizar. Foi observado que a substituição parcial de um minério que possui grande capacidade de assimilação por aqueles que assimilam pouco o líquido formado no processo de sinterização, resultou em maior resistência mecânica do sínter. Essa propriedade pode também ser associada ao formato dos poros no sínter produto, que reflete na sua redutibilidade. Em termos de penetração de fase líquida, os resultados indicam relação direta com a resistência mecânica do sínter. Dessa forma, esses ensaios de caracterização, juntamente com os aspectos mineralógicos, químicos e granulométricos, permitem subsidiar a tomada de decisão para a substituição mais adequada de um minério na mistura a sinterizar.
