Electric furnace smelting of blister copper directly from copper precipitates (cement copper) was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Copper concentrations in five different lots of cement copper in the investigation ranged from 62.5 to 82.5 wt-pct. Laboratory-scale smelting tests were made in a 50-kva electric-arc furnace to establish the reductant and flux requirements. Best recoveries were realized by adding 60 pct of the carbon required to combine with the contained oxygen in the cement copper. Operating parameters established during the laboratory-scale smelting tests were used successfully in smelting 20 tons of cement copper during 12 pilot-scale tests in an 800-kva electric-arc furnace. Over 98 pct of the contained copper was recovered as blister-grade metal. The projected energy consumption for a commercial-size furnace was 380 kwhr per ton of cold charge.

A pesquisa relativa ao transporte ferroviário no Brasil tem se intensificado nos últimos anos visando principalmente a melhoria no desempenho do par roda-trilho. Isso se deve a demanda de se transportar cada vez mais carga por eixo visando uma redução no custo de transporte. Através de mudanças na microestrutura do material ou de mudanças na composição das ligas utilizadas na fabricação pode se aumentar a resistência do par roda-trilho. Neste trabalho foi analisada a influência de diferentes microestruturas (puramente perlíticas e perlíticas-bainíticas), obtidas através de tratamento térmico por dilatometria, nas propriedades de um aço alto carbono similar ao utilizado em rodas convencionais classe C destinadas a implementação pesada com altas cargas e baixas velocidades. Foram realizados tratamentos isotérmicos em dez temperaturas diferentes para um aço eutetóide. As análises incluíram técnicas metalográficas (definição de fases presentes e distância interlamelar da perlita), ensaios mecânicos de dureza e ensaios magnéticos (saturação magnética e ruído de Barkhausen).

The possibility of using ultrasonic energy as a tool to improve the electrolytic deposition of copper and zinc from several electrolytes was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Sound with frequencies of 20, 26, 38, and 400 kilocycles per second and acoustical intensities of 0.25 to 1.5 watts per square centimeter was employed. Measurements of cell voltage, anode and cathode current efficiencies, and electrode potentials were made at various current densities. Effects of ultrasonics on the quality of the deposit and on anode corrosion also was noted. In the electrolytic recovery of copper from an acid copper sulfate solution at 50° C., adherent, well-consolidated deposits are normally obtained up to a current density of 30 amperes per square foot. As the current density is increased above this value, the deposits normally become progressively more spongy and less adherent. Ultrasonic irradiation resulted in adherent and well-consolidated deposits at current densities up to 300 amperes per square foot. Radiation also produced smaller grain size and preferred orientation of the copper crystals. In addition, radiation caused as much as 3-volt decreases in cell voltages at the higher current densities. These decreases were caused chiefly by depolarization of the anode, although small depolarization effects were also noted at the cathode. Radiation apparently did not greatly affect cathode-current efficiencies, but prevented excessive anode corrosion at the higher current densities and resulted in more uniform corrosion. Ultrasonic radiation at a frequency of 400 kilocycles per second was not as effective as radiation at the lower frequencies. Circulation of the electrolyte at rates up to 5 percent of the cell capacity per minute did not produce results comparable to those effected by ultrasonic radiation. Rapid rotation of the cathode up to 1,800 revolutions per minute gave results approaching those obtained with ultrasonics.

Estes aços possuem certa tendência à geração de trincas transversais de superfície em placas produzidas via lingotamento contínuo, principalmente se as variáveis de processo durante a solidificação não forem adequadas. Experimentalmente, verificou-se que a ocorrência de trincas estava associada à composição química e às variáveis de processo. Com base nestas observações, avaliações da literatura e simulações com software Thermocalc ®, foram propostas alterações de composição química e ajuste na curva de oscilação, sendo este último considerado fator principal para a obtenção de placas isentas de trincas.

The term "auriferous pyrite" relates to an association of gold with pyrite in a variety of textural forms that affect metallurgical treatment. Extraction of the gold depends not only on the grain size and distribution of the gold in the pyrite, but also on the crystal size and surface area of the pyrite. Occlusions of medium to coarse gold may be liberated by moderately fine grinding. The amenability of finely dispersed (submicroscopic) gold depends in part on the activity of the pyrite surface for oxidation. Two types of auriferous pyrite at Carlin, Nevada, have been examined by optical microscopy and SEM methods before and after aqueous oxidation test work to show how differences in morphological features can affect rates of oxidation and amenability to gold extractions by methods of chlorination and low temperature oxidation.

Explosive demolition typically utilizes cutting charges to sever columns, detonating cord to time charges and provide an initiation path, and dynamite as a kicker charge. The kicker charges of dynamite are used to “move” columns out of alignment, causing collapse. Demolition projects involving dynamite can pose significant health and safety risks to workers and the public. Nitroglycerin in dynamite can cause dizziness, fainting, and other health problems. Moreover, dynamite placed directly on columns can result in fragmentation and cutoffs, preventing other charges from being initiated and resulting in incomplete demolition. Fragmentation can occur from columns and travel significant distances from the initiation point, sometimes reaching hundreds of meters away. This fragmentation can pose serious dangers to anyone in the vicinity, including workers and members of the public, as the debris can cause severe injuries and property damage. The force and velocity of the fragmented material can be unpredictable and difficult to control, making it important to take proper safety precautions and consider alternative demolition methods that minimize the risk of fragmentation. Previous work concluded that casing charges in water showed that a reduced dynamite charge mass could still successfully kick the charge out of alignment. This study aims to investigate the use of Pentolite boosters in water-cased charges as a safer alternative to dynamite-based demolition. The research involved testing various amounts of dynamite and pentolite boosters in water to compare their effectiveness in moving a hanging W-beam, which swung freely like a ballistic pendulum. Water-cased charges consistently move the column at a higher velocity than the traditional dynamite charge placed directly on the column. The method of water-casing increased the area of impact and impulse felt by the column, improving demolition efficiency when compared to traditional demolition methods as found in previous studies. Pentolite water-cased charges moved the column at 7.8 meters/second (m/s) while the dynamite water charge moved the column at 5.9 m/s. The increased strength and explosive properties of the pentolite contributed to this increase in velocity. This study showed that it is feasible to remove dynamite from demolition projects by utilizing pentolite boosters and that when considering safety, explosive properties, and effectiveness, pentolite boosters can be cost effective as well.

Preliminary studies showed that direct hydrolysis of H2SiF6 to SiO2 and HF at elevated temperatures was subject to many mechanical difficulties, and that corrosion of construction materials was a serious problem. Elimination of SiO2 from the HF product was generally poor. An alternative procedure, hydrolysis of lime-neutralized H2SiF6 by steam at 950° to 1,100° C, yielded a product very low in SiO2. Condensates containing up to 300 g/1 HF were prepared.

Centrifugal air classification and li-quid-phase sedimentation are the principal methods of industrially sizing materials of dimensions smaller than those handled by screens. Increasing application of materials such as composites and high performance ceramics has furthered the need for closely-sized, fine, industrial mineral and synthetic products of controlled properties. Sedimentation can be used to separate very small sized particles but introduces problems of liquid-solid separation, de-agglomeration and drying. Some of the advantages and limitations of centrifugal air classification will be discussed and laboratory and plant measurements using centrifugal machines will be presented to support the discussion.

Whilst coalmining in the United Kingdom has been synonymous with longwall mining practice there have been changes in recent times which have enabled not only an extension in the length of the face to be worked but also in the ability to extract both thick and thinner seams. Additionally the industry has taken a positive view in the extension of retreat methods of extraction applied for different reasons both to particularly thick and specially thin seams. To permit development of a flexible programme to meet these diverse needs, it has been necessary to design machinery along with mining systems specially suited to these requirements. In reviewing current UK thinking special emphasis is made on the extraction of thinner seams generally of higher quality coal at moderate depths with a commentary on some recent results.

The ore deposit of the Iron King mine occurs in a group of steeply-dipping metamorphosed eugeosynclinal volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Precambrian age. Within this sequence, the ore deposit lies at the contact of a unit made up of rhyolitic tuff and interbedded andesite and a structurally underlying series consisting of andesitic tuffs, minor rhyolitic tuffs, and argillaceous sediments. Field evidence suggests that these rocks have been overturned. The ore deposit is made up of a series of overlapping, conformable or bodies consisting of massive pyrite and associated lenses of massive quartz. These contain recoverable amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. A parallel zone of copper mineralization occurs within the hanging-wall rocks. The deposit is considered to belong to a large and important group characterized by mineralogical composition and the lithology and structural type of the host rocks. Evidence regarding the origin of the deposit is reviewed, and it is concluded that the ore bodies were formed through the agency of volcanic hot springs on, or near, a submarine surface of deposition

Understanding the energy-size reduction relationship is vital to grinding process; therefore, this paper aims to show the energy-size reduction of magnetite-calcite binary mixture in a laboratory wet conical ball mill. Single magnetite, single calcite, and blended magnetite-calcite mixture at three weight ratios in four particle sizes were ground in a laboratory wet conical ball mill at four grinding time periods. The results showed that the particle size distribution of both fine particles and coarse particles of single and mixture ground product fitted well with the PSD computed by Rosin–Rammler-Benne function. The larger mass percentage of calcite is, the higher t10 of binary mixture ground product is. On the contrary, t10 in the mixture decreases as the percentage of magnetite in the mixture increases. The different breakage behaviors in blended samples are due to the hardness and particle size. The results of calculated ratio of energy absorption factor showed that the calcite consumed more energy in the breakage process of binary mixture than ground alone. The JK size-dependent breakage model based on the t10 method fits all the experiment data, be it generated from pure minerals, mixtures at different weight ratios, or each component separated from the mixture.

The Bureau of Mines performed cratering experiments in a homogeneous granite to test scaling laws for charge weights of 0.00476, 0.0220, 0.0900, 0.304, and 1.03 lb. Agreement among the data was best when empirical scaling exponents greater than one-third were assumed. Although the analysis showed that the best empirical scaling exponents were 0.37 for crater volume, 0.38 for crater radius, and 0.39 scaling for crater depth, all three crater dimensions could be scaled with a 0.38 scaling exponent.

"The most common extraction method in Polish coal mines utilize pillars between adjacent longwall panels. This is mainly due to the significant depth and difficulties in maintaining stability of the gateroads. This paper presents measurements of entry convergence and range of the fracture zone around a gateroad measured with a borehole camera. The entry where the measurements were taken was located in a parallel entry separated from the gateroad by a 5-m- (16-ft-) wide pillar. The gateroad was located in a hard coal seam 900 m (2,952 ft) deep with a dip of 5°. The extraction method was longwall mining with caving and the mining height was about 3 m (10 ft).Furthermore, the ""in situ"" measurements were compared to the convergence forecast for the gateroad and fracture zone by means of numerical modeling conducted using the Phase2 Version X.X finite element program from Rocscience. The determination of the fractured zone around the openings is of great importance to successful mining practice, especially in support planning and design for longwall gateroads. Moreover, proper determination of the fractured rock zone is one of the basic elements in the process of planning the roof bolting for mine workings.INTRODUCTIONIn the Polish. hard coal mining sector, retreat longwall extraction is most commonly used (Prusek and Masny, 2007). This method is connected with the necessity to carry out a number of development operations during the first stage, including among others, driving of gateroads and a setup room.Currently, most Polish mines eliminate gateroads behind the extraction front, using the ""U"" ventilation system (Szlitzak et al., 2008). In such cases, one of the roads for the next longwall panel is driven along the caving goafs, leaving a protective pillar of some chosen width (Figure 1). The question regarding the width of the coal pillar is especially important to the stability of the gateroads that define the panel for the subsequent longwall. When analyzing the previous experience relating to this type of pillar (Junker, 2006; Rajwa, 2008; Stranzet et al., 1973; Betriebsempfehlung, 1982), one can state that there exist two solutions for the determination of its width."

A performance study of oxygen self-rescuers from the United States and other countries was undertaken as an assessment of present worldwide technology. The apparatus were tested a an breathing and metabolic simulator in the Life Support laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. Parameters monitored during the testing were inhaled levels of C02 and 02, inhaled gas temperature, and breathing resistance. The metabolic demand placed on the apparatus represented the average demand of the 50th percentile miner performing a 60- min man-test 4, as described in 30 CFR 11H. Results presented include ;apparatus service life and subjective comments as well as averages and peaks of monitored parameters.

Engineered scavenger compounds (ESC's) developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are a novel class of compounds that selectively can recover a desired element from a solid or molten alloy. Lithium titanate (L2Ti307 or Li2O?3Ti02) is used as an ESC to recover lithium (Li) from aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that Li2Ti307 undergoes a phase change during scavenging from an orthorhombic structure to a hexagonal structure. This change is due to the incorporation of lithium in the matrix of the material and the effect of temperature. Although both phases are metastable, the hexagonal phase that forms during the scavenging of lithium from Al-Li alloys appears to be the more stable phase. Recovering lithium from the ESC by electrodeposition does not cause the structure to revert to the orthorhombic phase. The orthorhombic and the hexagonal structures of Li2Ti307 have similar scavenging capacities for lithium. This report proposes a new mechanism for the phase transformation.

Oven widths for experimental and commercial slot-type ovens differ appreably in most instances; the experimental ovens usually ranging from 10 to 14 inches and the commercial units from 14 to 21 inches. Application of results obtained with experimental ovens to commercial practice thus requires major extrapolations. A critical survey of the literature indicated that sufficient information about the effects of variations in oven width on the carbonizing process is not available to permit such extrapolations to be made with any considerable degree of confidence.

Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. THE accepted basis of comparisons between mills of different diameter is the percentage critical speed. If n = actual mill speed, rpm, nc = calculated critical speed, rpm, np = calculated percentage critical speed, and D == inside diameter of the mill in feet, then n, In the following analysis capacity, T, is expressed in short tons per hour, tph, and power consumption, P, in kilowatts, kw. Accordingly power consumption per unit of capacity, P will be expressed in kilowatt hours per short ton, or kw-hr per ton. In all equations D refers to the inside diameter of the mill in feet and v to the peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute inside the liners. ' Comparison between separate mills must be based on equivalent grinding conditions, i.e., same feed, same size distribution of feed, same size distribution of product, and same percentage of solids. In addition, comparisons between separate rod mills must be based on the same rods, same type of liners, and same percentage rod load. Comparisons between separate ball mills presuppose the same balls, similar liners, and same relative ball load. The practical np-range through which the equations apply varies, being narrower for fine grinding in ball mills and wider for coarse crushing in rod mills. The Relationship between Capacity and Speed It is the general belief that the capacity, T, of a tumbling mill is directly proportional to the speed of the mill, other things remaining constant.' Mathematically this is represented by the equation T - c¹ n tph [4] where c, is a factor related with the grinding characteristics of the ore, method of reduction, and the units chosen. It is proposed here that the general equation relating mill capacity and speed should be of the form T = c¹ nm tph [5] In other words, the capacity should be proportional to the mill speed raised to power m, the numerical value of the exponent being 1 5 m 5 1.5, depending on the circumstances. Eq. 5 can also be written in the following forms: T = c, (np)m tph, and [6] T=Ca vm tph, [71 where v = peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute. If the observed capacity of a mill at speed n¹ is = T¹ tph, the capacity T² of the same mill at speed n² should be T² = T¹ (n²/n¹)tph [8] The Relationship between Power Consumption, Mill Diameter, and Speed The only well known theoretical deduction relating power consumption, P, and mill diameter appears to be the formula of duPont introduced by Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell, and Coghill.' According to duPont, the power required to operate a mill is a function of the mass of the balls, of the lever arm of the ball mass, and of the speed of the mill. The ball mass per unit of mill length is proportional to the square of the diameter, the lever arm is directly proportional to the diameter, and the critical mill speed or any percentage thereof is inversely proportional to the square root of the mill diameter. A field study was made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with oil companies to determine the feasibility of changing the injection profile of water-input wells after water breakthrough at producing oil wells. A secondary objective was to study the particle size and quantity of plugging material required to change the input profile and the methods of applying these materials. Fifty-three injection wells were treated with various amounts and types of plugging materials and the injection profile was definitely changed in most of the wells treated. Increased efficiency of water injection after treatment was indicated by tracer surveys and injection-well performance. There were some indications that the rate of water production was reduced and the rate of oil production was increased as a result of selective-plugging treatments, but ,s found that an immediate change in the rate of oil and water production did not normally occur. In many cases, beneficial results from a treatment may never be observed in the rate of oil or water production due to the many factors that affect the performance of producing and injection wells.

"INTRODUCTION The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment, and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44 5/. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used:1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts.2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space.3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute.4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. gr. 1.84).The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general and of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.The semi-automatic moisture tester manufactured by the Brabender Corp. has proved itself in many industrial processes where the rapid estimation of moisture is of vital importance. With the approval of A. C. Fieldner, chairman, A.S.T.M. Committee D-5, and through the courtesy of Lowell Malan, chief chemist, United Electric Coal Companies, who loaned the tester, tests were made to determine the feasibility of using this instrument to determine the moisture in coal."
