As part of its effort to produce cell - grade alumina from clay , the Bureau of Mines investigated the hydrogen chloride gas - sparging crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate ( ACH ) from aluminum chloride liquor , to provide information for optimizing the crystallization operation . Four parameters important in controlling the crystallization of the aluminum chloride hexahydrate and the concentration of impurities , particularly phosphorus and magnesium , in ACH crystals are ( 1 ) aluminum chloride concentration in the feed solution to crystallization , ( 2 ) hydrogen chloride gas flow rate , ( 3 ) temperature , and ( 4 ) concentration of phosphorus and magnesium also in the feed solution . Parameters 1 , 2 , and 3 affect crystal formation . The combined effects are very important because the phosphorus and magnesium concentrate in the crystals during the early stages of crystal growth . Aluminum chloride hexahydrate of cell -grade purity was crystallized from saturated aluminum chloride solutions containing less than 0.003 wt - pct P205 and 0.010 wt - pct Mg0 . Crystallization temperatures less than 60° C decreased crystal purity .

Low-loaders or 'floats' for relocating equipment in surface mines are limited to a capacity of approximately 350 t. In the iron ore industry it is desirable to be able to rapidly relocate excavators in order to maintain production rates within appropriate quality limits. In addition, the ability to rapidly relocate heavy equipment raises the possibility of improving the quality of repairs by performing maintenance in controlled shop conditions. However, many iron ore operations operate hydraulic excavators in the 600 to 800 t range, with newly released excavator models exceeding 800 t. These excavators are too large to float using conventional technology. This paper examines the potential for using multi-bogie transporters to relocate large hydraulic excavators in surface mines. Recent innovations have seen the development of modular transporters which can be coupled together to achieve larger platform areas. When separated, and with their drive bogies neutralised, these units are able to be towed behind prime movers and relocated between mines via public roads. The potential cost savings for relocating a Terex RH170 excavator in an open pit coal mine are examined. In the first six months of 2008, the analysis showed the potential for a 38 per cent reduction in total travel time with a corresponding revenue increase of approximately $350 k. The paper recommends that a feasibility study be conducted into offering a heavy equipment relocation service within the Pilbara region.

Underground stone mines frequently operate on multiple mining horizons or are required to undermine or overmine old workings. In these situations, the effects of pillar columnization and interburden thickness on the stresses surrounding mine workings are poorly understood. Many old workings were not designed to consider the effect on future undermining or overmining and, as a result, are laid out on irregular patterns and with pillar sizes that are difficult or impossible to replicate on adjacent levels. Additionally, as depth increases, even a consistent gridded mine layout may result in poor columnization due to the need to increase pillar sizes. Rules of thumb and past practice for designing multiple levels may often be effective. This paper explores the effect that multiple-level stone mining has on stress redistribution through the discussion of two case-study mines and associated numerical modeling to provide additional insight into situations which may cause concern.

A series of experiments in the U.S. Bureau of Mines Safety Research Coal Mine at the Pittsburgh Research Center evaluated the effects of crosscuts on the travel time of carbon monoxide (CO) along an entry to improve the accuracy of a mine-fire locator program. Three entries, ten single crosscuts, and three double crosscuts were instrumented with CO sensors. One-percent CO in nitrogen was released and monitored as it traveled the entries. In addition to dispersion of CO at the front of the CO wave, CO was entrained from the entry into the crosscuts. It was determined for an entry and single-crosscut configuration that the measured travel time for a concentration change of 5 ppm was 27% greater than the predicted time based upon entry volume only, but 13% less than the predicted time based upon entry and crosscut volumes. For an entry and double-crosscut configuration, the measured travel time for the same concentration change was 25% greater than the predicted time based upon entry volume only, but 10% less than the predicted time based upon entry and crosscut volumes. An effective dispersion coefficient for CO dispersion along one of the entries was estimated to be 1.5 m2/ s.

The objective of the project was to optimize the ventilation parameters of a continuous miner underboom scrubber to further control. the amount of airborne dust discharged during mining, to further reduce the exposure of face personnel for an exhaust brattice ventilation system, and avoid recirculation of contaminants at the face. This research was performed in an underground coal mine in Utah. The tasks included preliminary face ventilation evaluation and optimization of the scrubber system to eliminate recirculation of the scrubber discharge air. Airflow tests were conducted on the currently used dust control system and the modified scrubber system. Tracer gas tests were performed to evaluate face ventilation effectiveness. Confirmatory tests of the scrubber system under actual operating conditions, modifications to the scrubber system, and a comparative evaluation of the scrubber system vs. the existing system were performed. This paper presents the results of the airflow pattern tests and the respirable dust levels in the modified scrubber system and the existing system. The optimized face ventilation parameters and the developed operating guidelines may provide the benefits of dust reduction, better face ventilation, and improved visibility.

Os aços com médio teor manganês são uma classe da terceira geração de aços avançados de alta resistência (AHSS), combinam propriedades mecânicas como ductilidade e resistência mecânica e são assistidos pelo efeito TRIP, características determinantes para sua aplicação na indústria automobilística. Convencionalmente, tais ligas são produzidas por meio de laminação a quente e a frio, seguidas de recozimento intercrítico. No entanto, o trabalho a morno têm ganhado interesse com o intuito de reduzir custos e tempo operacionais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a influência da laminação a quente e a morno por meio de análises de microscopia óptica, eletrônica de varredura, difração de raios x, microdureza Vickers e técnicas de EBSD em um aço 8Mn- 0,08C. Observou-se uma microestrutura mais refinada e deformada no material laminado a morno com um maior percentual de austenita retida, o que derivou uma menor dureza. Na amostra laminada a quente, o valor médio de dureza evidenciou uma microestrutura martensítica de baixo teor de carbono. Em relação à textura verificou-se uma maior intensidade de componentes da fibra a na amostra laminada a morno devido a um maior grau de encruamento neste processamento termomecânico.

Phase changes in as-cast alloys in the Ni2 CoCr-Ni, Ti-NSAl system containing 0.1 wt pct C were studied after heat treatment at 1650°F. It was found that a vegion of CrCo-type s was developed in this system after I1000 hr. The tendency for s formation was dePendent upon the aluminum and litanium content, the s -forming tendency generally becoming more pro-nounced as the latter two elements are increased. s lended to form in interdendritic regioues and was associated with solutioning- of- carbide phases. Electron- vacancy computations for prediction of s formation on these alloys mere in sufficient agreement with what was observed experimentally to indicate that the method should be of value in assessing a-forming potential in cast alloys. However, the correlation of electrotz- vacancy numbers may not be as favorable in cast as cormpared to wrought alloys. THE increasing use of high-temperature alloys for longer times at higher temperatures has resulted in a real need for obtaining information on the phase changes taking place in these alloys since these changes often have a direct effect on properties. This paper reports on a study of the phase changes in Ni-Cr-Co-Al-Ti alloys after prolonged heating at 1650°F. The alloys were selected from the pseudo-ternary system Ni2CoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al and this system was chosen because it is the basis of many of the newer cast commercial superalloys. The attempt here was not to define accurately the boundaries of s formation in the NizCoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al system but to delineate the phase transformations taking place upon heating alloys covering a wide range of chemistries in this system. An addition of carbon was made to all alloys to further simulate commercial alloys. It was hoped that the information generated in this manner would be of more direct use to superalloy designers than an equilibrium diagram approach since commercial alloys generally have outlived their usefulness when equilibrium is attained. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were vacuum-melted from carbonyl-nickel pellet, vacuum-grade chromium, electrolytic cobalt, high-purity aluminum and titanium, and spec-trographic-grade carbon.

SUPPLEMENTING surveys of the engineering profession regarding salaries and advancement, based upon data from individual engineers, a survey through a questionnaire to employers of engineers has recently been made by a subcommittee of the Engineers Joint Council's Committee on the Economic Status of the Engineer. Its object was to learn directly from employers their attitudes and policies pertaining to the selection, training, placement, advancement, guidance, and professional activities of engineering graduate employes. The questionnaire was sent in May 1946 to 174 employers of engineers, including colleges. Replies were received from 104 employers in nineteen fields of industry, who employ about 2,000,000 persons, about 40,000 of whom are engineers. The following general observations are based on the questionnaires returned. Who Are Hired? Of the co-operators 96 per cent employ cadet engineers directly upon graduation from engineering schools, but only 4 per cent recruit their engineering staffs exclusively from the new graduates. About 43 per cent hire more than half of their new engineer employes after one or more years' experience with other employers. This is evidently a matter of necessity or expediency rather than preference, because more than sixty per cent of those reporting indicate that they prefer to hire the new graduate.

Cr/CrN bilayer coating was deposited on AISI 440C by Cathodic Arc. The composition and structure of the Cr/CrN coating were investigated by scanning Electron Microscope, X-Ray Diffraction and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The results show that crystal structure obtained was CrN phase with preferred [220] orientation. The hardness and adhesion of coating also were studied. The evaluation of erosion-corrosion (EC) on 440C bare and coated with Cr/CrN was performed by carrying out wear tests using a slurry jet with impingement angle 90° at 4 and 8 m/s. Corrosion, erosion and synergism wear rate were evaluated following the procedure described in ASTM G-119-09. This study presents that the synergism wear rate exceeds 40% of the total mass loss for coating and 60% of mass loss for the 440C, being the most aggressive wear component. The increase in impact velocity generated a rise in mass loss for both 440C bare and coated. The Cr/CrN coating offers better corrosion and erosion–corrosion resistance under all the tested conditions.

Design of plugs for abandonment of boreholes and shafts may be governed by the bond strength between the plug and host rock. This paper presents the results of push-out tests on cement grout plugs in salt. Two expandable cement grouts have been tested. The average interface shear strengths ranged from 2 to 12 MPa. Peak shear stresses at failure, assuming an elastic stress distribution along the interface, were up to eight times higher. Standard deviations commonly reached 20%. Dissolution along the interface was observed, and may have been enhanced by clay inclusions in the salt. This dissolution appears to have reduced bond strengths. Application of the results to the design of plugs for larger openings (e.g. shafts, drifts, or boreholes) is discussed.

"With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. THE fact that coals of different ranks and even of the same rank differ greatly in their amenability to iroth flotation is well known. In recognition of the need for an explanation of this phenomenon, two hypotheses have been suggested. Wilkinsl reported that the floatability of coals increased with an increase of the carbon content or rank. This postulate is handicapped by the fact that bituminous coals that possess moderate carbon contents are actually more floatable than anthracite coals that have high carbon contents, as shown in columns 6 and 9 of Table I. Taggart and his associates' implied that the difference of floatability between bituminous and anthracite coal was caused by the variation of carbon-hydrogen ratio. This is not applicable to the relative floatability of other coals and carbons. For example, column 11 of Table I shows that the carbon-hydrogen ratios of low-floating lignitic coal and non-floating animal charcoal are not only smaller than the moderate-floating anthracite coal, but are also similar to the high-floating bituminous coal. Furthermore, according to this hypothesis, high temperature coke-A (464), Ceylon graphite (1238), and lamp-black (357), all possessing extremely high carbon-hydrogen ratios, should be less floatable than other substances having much lower carbon-hydrogen ratios such as high volatile-B bituminous coal (11.9 to 22), anthracite coal (35.7 to 60.5), lignitic coal (15.6 to 33.6), and charcoal (13 to 26.2). However the former group is actually more floatable than the latter group. In this paper, a surface components hypothesis is Proposed to explain the different floatabilities of coals, carbons, and hydrocarbon minerals. The validity of the hypothesis is experimentally supported by the actual floatability, natural floatability, wettability, and adsorbability for neutral oils of coals, carbons, and hydrocarbon minerals tested. The combustible recovery of the flotation results, as used in this paper. was calculated from Eq. 1: P (100-Ep) 100 RWCP Rc= [1] F (100-E,) C, where R, is the percent combustible recovery; F and P are, respectively, the weight of feed and the weight of concentrate or product; E, and Ep are, respectively, the total percent of ash plus moisture in feed and in concentrate; Ru. is the percent weight recovery: and C, and C, are, respectively, the percent of combustible in feed and in concentrate. Except for ash and moisture content, all chemical components of a coal are assumed combustible. The experimental work included studies on flotation, ultimate and proximate analyses, contact angle tests, extractions of bitumen-A with benzene, adsorptions for liquid hydrocarbons, and wetting tests. Most of the flotation experiments were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine; others were tested in a small Denver machine. The solid feed for the former was 300 g and for the latter was 30 g. The solid materials used for flotation were crushed to —48 mesh. After the mineral pulp in the flotation cell was agitated for 6 min and the pH was adjusted to 7.5 & 0.2 with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, a petroleum light oil having a viscosity of 5.73 centipoises at 77 °F was added and conditioned for 2 min. Finally, pine oil was introduced and the froth was collected for exactly 3 min. The weight ratio of petroleum light oil to pine oil was kept constant at 1.5 to 1. Tap water was used for all flotation tests. Contact angles were measured with a captive bubble machine. For each coal sample, three specimens were mounted in transoptic mounts and polished with levigated alumina, first on a sheet glass, then on a cloth-covered metal polishing wheel. The polished specimen was first washed with distilled water and wiped thoroughly on a cleaned linen pad, then transferred into the pyrex cell of the captive bubble machine and conditioned for 6 min., and finally measured for contact angles at three or more points. Except where otherwise stated, the induction time for each measurement was 1 min. The contact angle representing each material was obtained by averaging the measurements of three specimens. The linen pad was first washed with warm distilled water, then boiled 30 min in a 2N sodium hydroxide solution, and finally washed with distilled water until no trace of sodium hydroxide could be detected in the decanted solution. The cleaned linen pad was stored under distilled water. Immediately before using, the pad was rewashed and transferred into a clean pyrex petri dish partly filled with distilled water. The glassware and rubber gloves used were cleaned by soaking in sulphuric acid-potassium dichromate cleaning solution, followed by rinsing with distilled water. The polished specimens were handled only by glass forceps. The ultimate and proximate analyses were made in accordance with the ASTM standard procedures for coal and coke. The extractable bitumen-A was determined by weighing 1 g of —100 mesh sample and placing it in a desiccated and weighed ASTM aluminum-extraction thimble. The thimble was placed in condenser hooks and inserted into an extraction flask containing 100 cu cm of benzene. The flask was heated and the benzene vapor was condensed by water coils. At the end of 24 hr of percolation, the thimble was removed, desiccated, and weighed. Loss in weight of sample was taken as bitumen-A and calculated to dry and ash-free basis.

Lowering of filter cake moisture of ultra-fine coal to a 20 percent level using conventional vacuum filtration could be achieved using a combination of metal ion and surfactants. Pretreating coal slurry with about 0.2 Kg/ton of a surfactant and 50 ppm of copper or 10 ppm of aluminum ions provided filter cake containing 22.8 percent moisture. The lowering of moisture is explained due to formation of hydrophobic micro-agglomerates which facilitates dewatering.

"INTRODUCTION Explosives have been used in ever—increasing amounts since gunpowder was invented. For hundreds of years only low explosives of the deflagrating type were used, and they were fired by means of a flame or hot object. Ben¬jamin Franklin first ignited gunpowder from a distance in 1751 by means of an electrostatic spark. Further efforts to develop a satisfactory electrical method to ignite explosives from greater distances were overshadowed by the invention of safety fuse in 1831, as this offered a relatively simple and inexpensive means of firing explosives.The discovery and introduction of high explosives of the detonating type and the invention of the fulmitate of mercury blasting cap about the middle of the nineteenth century provided the needed impetus for inventors to develop means of firing the cap by electricity. The original high-tension igniter, following Benjamin Franklin's experiment in which the detonating compound was ignited by a spark, was discarded in favor of a low-tension igniter, in which the detonating compound was ignited by a heated wire. The past 2 decades have seen considerable improvement in the design and construction of electric detonators to make them safer and more efficient, yet in spite of the improvement it is estimated that less than 50 percent of the explosives used in industry today are ignited or detonated electrically. The trend, however, is toward the use of electric methods. In recent years numerous-mining companies have introduced electric blasting exclusively at their mines as a means of improving safety and efficiency."

Os roletes de planicidade estão instalados na posição frontal dos laminadores. O histórico do equipamento mostra um tempo entre falha de 6 meses, caracterizadas principalmente por fratura da gaiola e danos na pista dos rolamentos lado acionado. Danos no eixo na região de montagem aumentam em torno de 10 horas a indisponibilidade da máquina para recuperação do mesmo. A partir da RCFA realizada nos rolamentos falhos, identificou-se deficiência de lubrificação, sinais de ovalização, descascamento e desalinhamento na pista de rolagem, fratura da gaiola. Com base nos modos de falha foi realizado a alteração e adequação da lubrificação dos mancais, melhora do sistema de vedação e alteração da disposição de montagem dos rolamentos de contato angular de back-to-back (“O”) para face-toface (“X”). Com as modificações realizadas os roletes atualmente operaram por mais de 14 meses sem ocorrência de falha.

The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys near the eutectic composition has been studied at high growth rates. Lamellar structures were found over a substantial range of tin-rich compositions, and this range extended to increasingly tin-rich concentrations as growth rate increased. These results are discussed in terms of stability and competitive-growth arguments. Various experimental and structural limitations to the rate of directional solidification are discussed. The rate of heat removal at the heat sink is the major experimental limitation. ReCENT interet1,2 in the use of fine composite structures produced by directional solidification of eutectic alloys makes it important to determine the range of composition and growth conditions that yield such microstructures. Because increasing growth velocities produce increasingly finer microstructures, it is particularly significant to determine the factors limiting the rate of solidification. Mollard and Flemings3 have shown that composite structures, free of primary dendrites, can be obtained in Sn-Pb alloys of off-eutectic composition. The composition range of composite structures was found to increase with increasing values of G/V, where G is the temperature gradient and V is the growth velocity. These results are in good quantitative agreement with an analysis of the stability of a planar eutectic interface.4 This analysis specifically predicts that over a small range of compositions stable lamellar structures will be obtained even for G/V = 0, hence, even at very high growth rates. The lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys has also been analyzed with a model based on competitive growth between dendrites and the composite structure.576 This treatment, based on earlier work on organic eutetics,7 predicts that the composition range yielding composite structures in Sn-Pb will increase rapidly at high growth rates. An increase in the composition range of composite structures at high growth rates was recently observed in Cu-Pb alloys near the monotectic composition.8 In view of these results, and the predictions of the stability and competitivegrowth analyses, it was decided to study the lamellar-dendritic transition in Sn-Pb alloys at high growth rates. EXPERIMENTAL Using 99.999 pct pure materials, a series of Sn-Pb alloys were prepared containing 16.8 at. pct to 27.6 at. pct lead. (Eutectic composition is 26.1 at. pct Pb.) Ingots were extruded to 0.175 in. rod, and some rod was drawn to 0.070-in. wire. Directional solidification was accomplished in two different ways, Fig. 1. For growth rates up to 2 x 10-1 cm per sec, a 0.175 in. diam sample was placed in a graphite crucible 5 in. long with 0.250 in. OD and 0.035 in. walls. Samples were melted under flowing argon in a vertical, platinum-wound furnace, and solidified by driving the crucible downwards through a \ in. hole in a water-cooled copper toroid, Fig. l(a). An insulated chromel-alumel thermocouple was imbedded in the center of a representative sample, and moved with the sample during solidification. The local temperature is plotted against the distance travelled by the sample in Fig. 2. As the growth rate increased, the solid-liquid interface moved closer to the water-cooled toroid and the temperature gradient increased. At growth rates above 10-1' cm per sec, heat was not removed fast enough and the sample moved into the toroid in the liquid state. The curve for V = 2 x 10-1 cm per sec shows a plateau caused by incomplete removal of latent heat from the interface, a problem which will be discussed later. To improve the heat removal, the toroid was cooled by nitrogen gas precooled in liquid nitrogen. This allowed successful solidification at rates up to 2 x 10-1cm per sec. Higher solidification rates required still more effective heat removal. Samples 0.070 in. in diam were placed in graphite tubes 0.125 in. in diam with 0.020 in. walls. Instead of cooling by sliding contact with a cooled toroid, these thinner samples were sprayed or directly immersed into water, Fig. l(b). After solidification, samples were stored in liquid nitrogen until they could be examined metallographic-ally. The surface was prepared with a diamond-knife microtome, followed by a light etch. The presence or absence of tin dendrites, Fig. 3, or lead dendrites, Fig. 4, was noted by optical microscopy, usually of a transverse section near the center of the sample. Replicas of the surface were prepared and examined in an electron microscope to resolve the fine lamellar structures, Fig. 5. The structures observed at various compositions and growth rates are summarized in Fig. 6. Composite structures were observed at increasingly cin-rich compositions as growth rate increased. This transition from dendritic to composite structure with increasing growth rate was also demonstrated by solidifying half a sample at a slow rate and then suddenly increasing the growth rate by lifting the furnace and quenching the sample with a water spray. A longitudinal section of this sample, Fig. 7, shows that the tin dendrites, which extended ahead of the slow-moving composite interface, were bypassed by the composite when the growth rate was increased. A preliminary survey of coke and steel plants conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Office of Solid Fuels Coordinator and under the auspices of the Coke Production Committee indicated that a very appreciable increase in pig-iron production would be obtained if pres- ent blast furnaces were supplied with a more uniform coke. Control of the sulfur and ash content of coal used for making coke is an important factor in producing uniform coke and thus increasing blast- furnace efficiency. In some mines producing metallurgical coal, the analysis of the coal bed shows a wide range of sulfur and ash content. To obtain production of coal with minimum deviation in sulfur content sampling, grading, selective mining, blending, and surface preparation are practiced at some mines with satisfactory results. The mines selected for this study have developed these methods and are successfully producing coal of uniform sulfur and ash content. The systems employed at different mines vary according to the physical character- istics of the coal bed, the manner of occurrence of impuritites in the coal, the development plan and mining system, surface preparation and the acceptable impurity content of the prepared coal. The ash content of the coal can be controlled by face preparation and in the cleaning plant. The introduction of some method or practice at other mines might make possible the use of coal for inetallurgical purposes that otherwise could not be used for making coke because of the wide variation of sulfur and ash content.

Two SAIMM colloquia The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is organizing two one-day colloquia in the State Pavilion, Milner Park showgrounds, Johannesburg, to coincide with the Electra Mining Exhibition on 16th and 17th September. Over a million rands worth of equipment will be on display, the Electra Mining Exhibition being rated among the four or five largest in the world. The 1978 Electra Mining Exhibition was attended by 24 000 visitors. "Project Management in the Metallurgical Industry", "Mine Fires" APCOM International Conference by H. W. GLEN The 17th APCOM Conference (under the auspices of the Council for the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries) was to have been held in Moscow during the last week in October. South Africans have always given enthusiastic support to the APCOM series of meetings, since their inception in 1961. The conference was held in the Republic in 1972.

This report describes the design, development and manufacture of a prototype quiet hard rock stoper drill and results of its field tests. It is shown that the stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using this design. The design concept of this drill is based on a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and pivot mount. The drill was manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.
