Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.

Lithium-ion battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Lithium-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions including thermal abuse, mechanical abuse, and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The NIOSH Mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires for battery electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, class D powder, and water mist for lithium iron phosphate battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water mist system on the suppression of lithium-ion battery fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

The Bureau of Mines studied some physical properties of hydraulic backfills and their paramount characteristics , and made preliminary attempts to compact this type of material . The in- place density of hydraulic backfills affects the properties of strength , consolidation , and water percolation . Dense fills give better support than loose fills . In - place density properties themselves are affected by grain size , grain size distribution , and the particular conditions of sedimentation in a stope ( the amount of work the slurry water does to compact the material ) . Field sampling of in - place densities of fills presently used in four different mines and laboratory and underground compaction tests using a standard concrete vibrator show that the initial in - place density of the cohesionless fill material tested can be significantly increased by vibratory compaction .

Dynamics of collision and kinetics of the bubble attachment to hydrophobic solid plates (Teflon) of different surface roughness were investigated. The experiments were carried out in such a way that probability of the collision and probability that the detachment will not occur were equal always 100%. Thus, it was possible to determine effect of the surface roughness on the bubble attachment (three phase contact formation, TPC) only. A high-speed camera (1182 Hz) was used to record the velocity variations, bouncing and time of attachment of the bubble colliding with Teflon plates having different surface roughness (5 different plates). Roughness of the plate surfaces was modified in a mechanical way using different abrasive papers. It was found that the roughness had a crucial influence on the time-scale of the TPC formation and attachment of the bubble colliding with the Teflon plates. Despite high hydrophobicity of all plates (contact angles 1100 -115º) it was observed that at the smoothest surfaces (called "Teflon I" and "Teflon II" and having surface roughness below 1 um) there was no attachment during the bubble first collisions. Prior to the attachment four or more "approach?bouncing" cycles of the colliding bubble were observed there and simultaneously the bubble shape varied rapidly within time intervals below 0.85 ms. Time of contact of the colliding bubble with the Teflon plates was very short; 2-3 ms. These results indicate that during that short time of the collision the liquid layer separating the colliding bubble and the solid surface did not reach a critical thickness of its rupture.

The ternary Ni2MnGa intermetallic compound is an intelligent material which has both a ferromagnetic property and a shape memory effect (SME). The use of the shape memory alloy films for an actuator of micro-machines is very attractive because of its large recovery force. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of fabrication conditions and to clarify the relationships between these properties and fabrication conditions of the Ni-Mn-Ga films. The Ni-Mn-Ga films with a thickness of nearly 5 um were deposited with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using a Ni50Mn25Ga25 or Ni52Mn24Ga24 target. They were heat-treated at various temperatures between 873 and 1273 K for homogenization and ordering and then cooled in a furnace. The composition of the films depended on the sputtering power. The as-deposited films were crystalline and had columnar grains. After the heat treatment the grains widened and the grain boundary became indistinct with the increasing heat treatment temperature. The martensitic transformation temperature of the heat-treated films increased with increasing nickel content. Furthermore the effect of plastic deformation and constraint aging on SME is also investigated. After plastic deformation, the two-way SME was shown through the martensitie transformation and its reversion, The intensity of X-ray diffraction peaks from stress-induced martensitie phase was found. The constraint-aged films also showed the two-way 3ME by thermal cycling.

Electrophoretic mobility measurements of coal and pyrite particles in distilled water revealed a difference between the migration speeds of the two materials toward the anode in a dc electric field. This information led to the development of a laboratory electrophoresis column for separating fine pyrite from coal by utilizing the electrokinetic and the specific gravity differences between coal and pyrite. The study demonstrated on a laboratory scale that pyrite and other impurities can be separated from fine coal by electrophoresis using a stage separation technique. In a cost analysis, electrical power for electrophoresis was extrapolated to about $1 per ton of clean coal product. But, since the only successful tests ever made were in the laboratory with prewashed samples of minus 100-plus 325-mesh coal in distilled water, the cost figure derived is not representative of conditions prevalent in commercial coal cleaning operations. True conditions would reflect costs many times as great. In the course of the work, several scale-up techniques were considered but their feasibility became academic in view of the physical and economic problems associated with electrophoretic separation of pyrite from coal. Although the process and apparatus were finally deemed impractical for commercial coal preparation, the electrophoresis column may have some application as a laboratory device.

As THE years go by, names of distinguished metallurgists will be added to the list of Henry Marion Howe lecturers, and now and then an illustrious one, for to be chosen to deliver the Howe lecture will be, I do not hesitate to predict, a highly coveted honor. I pray, therefore, your indulgence, if I confess to a feeling of gratification in having been appointed the first of these lecturers. It does not follow, however, that I am losing all sense of proportion and that I have an exaggerated idea of the little I have been able to contribute to our knowledge of iron and steel. Indeed, I fully realize how small were my claims to so great a distinction. I realize, also, that those entrusted with the task of selecting a lecturer were actuated, in coming to a decision, by their knowledge of the long and intimate friendship that had existed between the leader we have lost and myself. For their generous impulse, I thank them from the bottom of my heart; and with becoming modesty, I take up my task as the first Henry Marion Howe lecturer. It would be pleasant and indeed most appropriate to devote this entire lecture to a eulogy of Henry Marion Howe and his work, but how short the time for so large an undertaking and how inadequate my qualifications! On Aug. 28, Sept. 4, 11, and 18, 1875, a series of articles appeared in the Engineering & Mining Journal entitled "What is Steel?" With one exception, these constitute the first professional paper of Henry Marion Howe. That was nearly fifty years ago, three years after graduating from Harvard University. He was then but twenty-seven years old and already his keenly inquisitive mind was actively at work. There is a touch of romance in this young metallurgist who, on entering his. scientific career, destined to be so brilliant and so fruitful, on the very threshold of it, seems to have selected as his motto "What is Steel?" Like a knight-errant of science, he started on his quest for an answer to that question, a quest which was to last forty-seven years and which death only brought to an end. And while thus engaged how many wonderful messages we received from him, each one bringing us nearer to the goal! How illuminating, inspiring and encouraging were those messages! How well-equipped he was to wrench from nature some of the secrets she so jealously guards! How broad his learning and how clear his

The Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority (DELCORA) will be adding tunnel infrastructure to its wastewater conveyance system. This program involves the construction of a conveyance/storage tunnel and related facilities. The proposed 12- foot to 14-foot (±) finished diameter, TBM mined deep rock tunnel spans over 8.5 miles and lies approximately 80 ft-120 ft below the surface. The system is connected to the surface by at least five vertical online shafts and one offline shaft with associated 800ft long adit. This paper provides project details including data on the geologic conditions in which the tunnel will be constructed.

Rare earth elements combine with most, of the metallic elements. As early as 1971 over a thousand intermetallics had been identified and described(1) From a magnetics viewpoint, systems involving. the d-transition metals Fe, Co and Ni are particularly interesting. In these systems there are at least four significant interactions: R-R exchange (R - a rare earth), R-T exchange (T = a transition metal), R-R exchange and the crystal field interaction acting upon the. rare earth ion. There is complex interplay between these interactions leading to bewildering variety in their magnetic behavior., Because of this and in view of the commercial significance of some rare earth intermetallics, studies of these systems has been an unusually active area of inquiry for the past two or three decades. The large magnetic moment of many of the rare earths, viz., 10 µB per atom for Dy and Ho, 9 1B for Tb and Er, etc., attracted, attention many years ago to the rare earths as potential ingredients for alloys to be used in permanent magnet fabrication. The utility of a permanent magnet in high perform¬ance devices (travelling wave tubes, voice coil motors, brushless motors, etc.) is in large measure determined by its maximum energy product, (BH)max. [(BH)max is the maximum value of B (magnetic induction) and H in the 2nd quadrant of the hysteresis loop.] Enhanced atomic moment in princple can lead to increased B and a large maximum energy product. Until about 1970 the largest (BH)max value known was about 5 MGOe(mega-gauss Oersted). This was for A1NiCo - an alloy involving Al, Ni and Co. It was recognized that the rare-earths had the potential for much higher energy product; in the case of Dy the theoretical energy product is about 35.0 MGOe., 70 times that of Alnico. (Needless to say, this theoretical value has never been achieved.) Large-scale efforts began about 30 years ago to synthesize magnetic materials containing rare earths and which would be suitable for permanent magnet fabrication. "A significant effort is expended on preparation of the capital estimate for feasibility studies. The development of the operating cost estimate is usually allocated a significantly smaller budget and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy of the operating cost. This paper presents a comparison of capital and operating costs of hydrometallurgy processing plants in order to demonstrate the importance that variations in operating costs have on the overall life-of-mine costs. The analysis is supported by a case study on the operating costs of a water treatment plant at an existing Australian hydrometallurgy facility at the feasibility design level. INTRODUCTIONDetermination of the economic validity of a minerals processing project is a critical outcome of a feasibility study. In many cases, the financial results of the feasibility study will determine if the project should proceed to execution. Ensuring that these results are reliable and built upon sound engineering practices allows companies to make informed decisions on resource opportunities and the selected technology.The methodology for developing a capital cost estimate at the feasibility level is well established. Specialist engineering estimators use budget quotations, first principle estimation and rules-of-thumb to develop an estimate with an accuracy of typically -10% to +15%. Cost reporting software packages are used to methodically build up the estimate from design information supplied by the engineering disciplines. Risk analysis and capital expense workshops are carried out to identify potential deficiencies in the estimate. It is widely recognized that in order to successfully produce a feasibility level capital estimate with an appropriate level of accuracy, a rigorous development process is necessary.The development of the operating cost estimate is typically less rigorous than the capital cost estimate. The operating cost is normally derived by the process engineering discipline and rarely are specialist estimators used to support the development. The allocated budget for producing an operating cost is usually smaller and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy and contingency reflect the most likely operating cost scenario."

A new membrane electrolysis process for bismuth recovery from bismuthinite concentrate was introduced. Under the conditions of temperature 70 degrees C, acidity 3 mol/L, solid liquid ratio 1:4 and 1.1 times stoichiometry sodium chlorate dosage for 1.5 h oxidation leaching, more than 98.5% bismuth can be leached from bismuthinite concentrate. The resultant leach solution was subjected to membrane electrolysis. Under the conditions of NaCl concentration 300 g/L and pH 7 in anolyte, bismuth ions concentration 80 g/L and HCl concentration 3 mol/L in catholyte, heteropole distance 6 cm, temperature 40 degrees C and current density 200 A/m2, a flat deposited bismuth plate can be obtained after 24 h electrolysis, and the bismuth purity was more than 99%. The current efficiency of cathode was 97.88%. Chemical component analysis results showed that the average convert efficiency of the sodium chlorate was 52.77% and the average oxidizing efficiency of chloride ion was 69.78%, and the resultant anolyte generated in anode compartment could be fully reused as oxidant for leaching bismuthinite concentrate again.

The quality of metallic materials depends on their composition and structure and these are determined by various physico-chemical and technological factors. To effectively prepare materials with required composition, structure and properties it is necessary to carry out a research in two parallel directions: Comprehensive analysis of thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanisms of the processes taking place at the solid-liquid-gaseous phase interface during welding processes and development of mathematical models of the specific welding technologies. We have developed unique method of mathematical modeling of phase interaction at high temperatures. This method allows us to build models taking into account the thermodynamic characteristics of the processes, the influence of the initial composition and temperature on the equilibrium state of the reactions, the kinetics of heterogeneous processes, the influence of the temperature, composition, hydrodynamic and thermal factors on the velocity of the chemical and diffusion processes. The model can be implemented in the optimization of various technological processes in welding, surfacing, casting as well as in manufacturing of steels and non-ferrous alloys, materials refining, alloying with special additives, removing of non-metallic inclusions.

This article presents a novel approach to address the mining width-constrained open pit mine production scheduling problem in the context of medium-term planning. A mathematical formulation is proposed to incorporate mining width constraints into the production scheduling process, aiming to maximize the NPV of the schedule while ensuring enough room for the operation of mining equipment. To tackle the computational challenges posed by large-scale instances of the problem, we propose a method based on variable fixing and horizontal precedence generation. In this study, we apply the developed model to real-world scenarios from Radomiro Tomic short-term mine planning problems such as optimizing the timing of major truck maintenance and the impact of external factors, like the delay in the production of the Chuquicamata underground project. Remarkable improvements are observed with the mining width-constrained model. Specifically, the mining width satisfiability is enhanced from 2 to 60% compared to the traditional open pit mine production scheduling model, underscoring the significance of incorporating these constraints. The proposed method showed good results reaching optimality gaps within 5%.

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. "The aim of the study was to develop and implement more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collectors. A hypothesis has been formulated on the action of dialkyldithiophosphates in the flotation of sulphide ores based on the assessment of their complexing properties and surface activity at the liquid-gas border. Dialkyldithiophosphates form weaker complexes with cations of heavy metals compared to xanthates, and are characterized by a large difference in the strength of their complexes with heavy metal cations. It provides higher selectivity of dialkyldithiophosphates in the separation of non-ferrous metal sulphides and iron sulphides from them. To make a quality assessment of the impact of surface activity of the synthesized collectors on their selectivity of action and collecting power, an assessment of the surface tension of their aqueous solutions has been performed using the stalagmometer method. It is well known that a stronger collector is characterized by a greater surface activity, in contrast to a more selective collector which is characterized by a lower surface activity. Based on studies, new dialkyldithiophosphate collectors BTF 163 and BTF 1552 are suggested for use in the flotation of sulphides to increase the recovery of copper, gold and silver. The collector BTF 163 was introduced at a gold processing plant in Kazakhstan and has been undergoing industrial testing in the sulphide cycle of scheelite-skarn-sulphide ores in a factory in the far east of Russia. The collector BTF 1552, which increases the recovery of silver and gold by 3%, was approved for industrial testing in another far-eastern factory. A modification of the reagent BTF 1552, the new reagent BTF 1522, was introduced in the flotation of copper-zinc ore at a factory in Kazakhstan."

O mercado de Siderurgia no Brasil vive um momento de pressão causado pelas quedas dos preços internacionais e agravado por fatores internos como a redução no consumo, aumento do custo de energia e tributação elevada. Tendo em vista que, ao menos no curto prazo, não há perspectiva de melhoria, as indústrias do setor se mobilizam para adequar a esta nova realidade. A sobrevivência em um cenário de alta competitividade é garantida reduzindo custos de produção e manutenção e buscando aumentar a produtividade sem, entretanto, expandir a capacidade produtiva. Para atingir estes objetivos as indústrias focam em pequenas melhorias operacionais, com investimentos em pequenas modernizações e otimizações de processos existentes, em detrimento de grandes investimentos em expansões. Neste contexto observa-se um aumento na relevância do software de automação, que surge como alternativa para realização de melhorias, pois possuem custo relativamente baixo em comparação com reformas a nível mecânico e podem proporcionar ganhos importantes de eficiência e qualidade. Este artigo apresenta um estudo da utilização de metodologias ágeis de desenvolvimento de software para realização de melhoria contínua em processos industriais. Como exemplo de aplicação é apresentado o trabalho de otimização do software de automação de um laminador de alumínio com foco no aumento de sua taxa de utilização. A meta foi buscar um ganho de produtividade garantindo os mesmos padrões de segurança originais dos equipamentos e com impacto mínimo nas atividades produtivas.
