Hazen Research, Inc., has developed a new process for removing pyritic sulfur and ash from coal. Feed coal is contacted with iron carbonyl vapors, Fe(CO)5, at 190°C which puts a thin skin of magnetic material on the pyrite and ash, but does not affect the coal. Thus, low intensity magnetic separators yield a nonmagnetic coal, low in sulfur and ash, and a magnetic refuse, high in sulfur and ash. Results are given for clean coal produced by this method. A comparison is made between results of the magnetic process and the U. S. Bureau of Mines two-stage flotation process cleaning identical samples of Pittsburgh Coal. Capital and operating costs of the two cleaning methods are discussed.

Wastes when produced can be reused or recycled prior to disposal. Industries that cause environmental concerns during manufacturing include primary materials and primary metals. Pollution prevention mechanisms to achieve waste reduction require new separation, reclamation, control and process simulation technologies. Substituting recyclables for virgin resources will reduce energy use, water pollution, air pollution, water use and mining wastes. Shrinking landfill space will spur new technologies for waste treatment and recycling. These situations hence offer opportunities for innovative flowsheets with appropriate separation technologies. Development of innovative flowsheets to treat recyclables offer unique opportunities for process/product development, obtain green products and hence market advantage. The paper will illustrate with selected innovative flowsheets to treat recyclables.

A drill recorder is a permanent data collecting instrument. In open pit blast hole drilling the application of a drill recorder is that of data collection, drilling control, and drilling education. The various drilling parameters (weight, RPM, penetration, torque, and air) have a drilling correlation which can be demonstrated and documented by a recorder graph. When the correlation is physically put to use during the process of drilling, then the recorder has become a drilling tool and is no longer just a data collecting instrument, per se. By being able to maintain accurate records and drilling control, comprehensive studies of changes both operational and technological can be made. These are based on in-progress facts and not after-the-fact logs. To determine total drilling efficiency, drilling conditions must be documented and controlled. Field operations at American Smelting and Refining Company's Mission Mine have proved that by increasing drilling control, demonstration of parameter relationships, and drill monitoring, more economic efficiency can be obtained. In comparing results obtained with recorder control and conventional control a decrease of 14 percent to 36 percent of drill footage costs were obtained. The percentage of variance is dependent upon whether drilling is milled-tooth or carbide-insert bit drilling.

Over the last six years I have been involved with the calculation of ore reserves and mine planning using various computer systems and soft- ware packages. This experience has given me a unique perspective from which to view the needs of the engineers and geologists whose job it is to produce geologic and mineable ore reserves. The purpose of this paper is to share that perspective with those who are in this field or are thinking of purchasing computer software to aid in these calculations. My first experience with computers in mining was the creation of a mini-computer based coal reserve and mine planning package written as part of my Easter's thesis. This package took about ten weeks to write, four weeks to document, and two weeks to install at the mine for which it was written. It did what it was designed to do, which was to emulate the hand procedure which had been used prior to its installation. The package was specific to its application which involved several small seams of coal being mined simultaneously and would have required major modification for it to be applied to a mine where, say, one thick seam was mined in two benches.

THE production of oil in Ohio, in 1924, was characterized by no marked or surprising change. Low prices and the absence of promising territory made the year quiet. As is well known, Ohio has reached a state of "settled production," and the most that can be expected for the ensuing few years is to maintain the output at approximately the present figure 1921 7,335,000 1922 6,781,000 1923 7,085,000 Geographically, the Ohio fields may be divided into three areas, each of which gets its main supply of oil from a different stratigraphic horizon.

An important problem associated with tandem dragline systems is that of matching the productive capability of individual draglines in the combination. In this paper, a dependence mechanism among draglines in a tandem system is described, and possible consequential problems in a poorly-matched system are defined. The rate of linear advance and the cost of stripping are determined as two major indications for an efficient operation. The proposed decision criteria and the underlying mechanism to select a synchronous couple are introduced and used in simulating tandem dragline systems. The developed model is tested on a hypothetical strip mine where pullback stripping is applied with a tandem dragline system.

Representation of actual oil yields from sections of the Green River formation oil shales by two types of drill - cutting samples was evaluated . Average oil yields of single sets of mud cuttings from hydraulic rotary drilling in Colorado and gas cuttings from pneumatic rotary drilling in Utah were compared statistically with yields of core samples taken from adjacent holes . Oil yields from gas cuttings were identical to oil yields of core samples . Mud cuttings appeared to represent a section of the formation conservatively , the deficiencies increasing with increasing richness of sample . Because a large amount of the oil - yield data currently available for the Green River formation is based on mud- cutting samples , development of a valid correction method by additional testing is needed .

The thermodynamic properties of aegirine, of composition [(Na0.869Fe30+7362 Fe20+16Mn0.03Ca0.1121)(A10.141Sil 9738)(06)], were experimentally determined at the Bureau of Mines as part of its efforts to advance minerals technology. The standard enthalpy of formation determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry is AHf298 = -641.12±0.73 kcal/mol. The standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides is AH298 = -37.136±0.509 kcal/mol. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 19.1 to 304.6 K. The derived standard entropy is S298 = 38.03±0.14 cal/mol?K. The heat capacity was measured over the range 348 to 1,198 K by differential scanning calorimetry. These experimentally determined data were combined with data from the litera¬ture to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of form¬ation over the temperature range of the measurements. Standard enthalpies of forma¬tion are given as functions of temperature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation at 298.15 K is AGf298 = -600.36 kcal/mol.

The planned extraction of deeper copper ore at Isa Mine has necessitated a review of existing equipment and methods to contain costs and improve working conditions. Mining is in progress for a crushing-conveying system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 Orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of ore to the crushers and conveying of the crushed ore by cable belt conveyor to existing shaft loading facilities, a distance of about 2 km. To develop part of the conveyor drive a new machine will be used, the Robbins MM120 Mobile Miner, a joint development project between The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The Mobile Miner uses a rotating cutting wheel to excavate headings 3.7 m high and from 4.7 m to 7.5 m wide. To ventilate the deep crusher complexes and associated development at high virgin rock temperatures, a refrigeration plant will be built on surface to reticulate chilled water underground. Bulk cooling of air to the 3000/3500 Orebodies and the southern crushers will be combined with the reticulation of chilled service water to the lower workings of the mine.

Stabilization Committee was named in 1932 to ascer-tain whether some practical substitute could be devised for the Rule of Capture, which was generally credited with being the major cause of instability in the Petroleum Industry. After considerable intercommittee correspondence a letter was received from. E. DeGolyer under date of Jan. 25, 1935, in which he discussed the possibility of modifying rather than discarding the Rule of Capture. He summarized his proposal as follows:

"IntroductionThe Chairman, in his speech to this body last year in Montreal, stated that the Dominion Coal Board looked to and depended upon the Bureau of Statistics for statistical material, and the Bureau does collect and publish monthly and annual data on coal. It may therefore be asked why an officer of the Dominion Coal Board should prepare and give a talk on statistics.I would explain that it has been our experience in the Board that, since the supply and consumption of coal in Canada is subject to a seasonal ebb and flow, it can be more profitably studied on the basis of a twelve-month period ending on March 31st than of a calendar year, since the end of March does represent a fairly stable end point in this ebb and flow. The figures are not prepared or published by the Bureau on that basis and it has therefore been thought that a presentation on this fiscal-year period would be of interest. The Bureau of Statistics has agreed that this may be valuable and all the data here presented are based on the reports secured from various sources by the Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Division, Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The only contribution by either myself or the staff of the Dominion Coal Board has been the tabulation in a different twelve month period, and the comments upon the picture presented.It should be noted that the data for the month of March, 1950, are not available in all cases and consequently the figures for that year contain an estimate for this month."

The discussion on my paper entitled "Experiments with a Straight or No-bosh Furnace," read at the Philadelphia Meeting, September, 1884 (Transactions, vol. xiii., p. 489), suggests the propriety of slipplementing it with another, giving my views as to the cause of the failure, which was so decided as to create surprise among furnace men. Quasi-dynamic triaxial compression tests have been done for the first time at confining pressures to 7 kb. The intermediate strain-rate apparatus employs a gas loading cylinder which allows axial strain rates up to 102/sec on a sample 2 cm in diameter and 4 cm long. Samples can be deformed at confining pressures to 7 kb. Strain gages bonded to the loading piston and to the jacketed specimen allow internal measurements of load and sample strains respectively. Westerly granite has been deformed at confining pressures to 7 kb, room temperature, and axial strain rates of 10-2 to 1/sec. An increase of ultimate strength with confining pressure was found as expected. The ultimate strength was also found to vary directly with increasing strain rate; the rate of rise increases with confining pressure. Brittle deformation has dominated the sample behavior. Solenhofen limestone has been deformed at confining pressures to 3 kb, room temperature, and axial strain rates of 10- to 10/sec. The brittle-ductile transition was found to take place at about 1.5 kb confining pressure at a strain rate of 10/sec.

Explosions are a type of mine accident that can be prevented by known methods ; however , they continue to occur because some mining people are still negligent in adopting and using the known and , in general , readily available measures for avoiding these disasters . Although the frequency and severity of explosions have decreased during the past 5 years there is still much room for improvement . Pennsylvania is an excellent example of what may be done to prevent explosions ; this State had an explosion record by no means good during the decade before 1930 , but by the adoption of readily available and not very expensive safety measures it now has almost entirely eliminated explosions . Pennsylvania bituminous mines now have the enviable record of not having had a major explosion disaster in considerably over 4 years . fact , many of our mining States are showing definite progress in working mines without explosions ; and some of these , like Alabama , West Virginia , Wyoming , and others now operating with few if any explosions , have had anything but a favorable record in the past .

"SynopsisCalcined basic nickel carbonate (BNC) concentrate was smelted in a pilotscale DC arc furnace to produce a nickel metal. The furnace was continuously operated for 12 days (24 hour/day), during which twelve different smelting conditions were investigated, with the major variables being reductant type and feed rate, flux composition and addition, and BNC feed rate.The 200 kW DC arc furnace was operated at power levels between 110 and 165 kW and at a total feed rate of 78 to 96 kg/h, resulting in an average slag and metal tapping temperature of about 1650°C. A total of 7.2 t of BNC were smelted, producing about 5.44 t of nickel metal and 2.94 t of slag. Nickel recoveries of 96.4% and higher were achieved, and the slag nickel content was as low as 0.1%. The major impurities in the metal were iron (mostly from oxygen lancing) and carbon. The calculated feed carry-over was less than 0.85% and the graphite electrode consumption was between 2.8–3.3 kg/MWh.IntroductionOne of the most distinctive advantages of DC open-arc smelting is the ability to process fine raw materials without any major issues with regard to the operability of the furnace, metal recovery, and metal quality. This has been demonstrated in Mintek’s DC arc pilot plant facilities over a period of about three decades (Curr et al., 1983). The materials that have been processed include laterite (Kotze, 2002), chromite fines (Curr et al., 1983), manganese fines (Lagendijk et al., 2010), PGM concentrates (Shaw et al., 2013), electric arc furnace (EAF) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a) and stainless steel (SS) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a; Goff and Denton, 2004), and petroleum fly ash (Abdellatif, 2002b). The top particle size of such materials can vary from a few millimetres (e.g. laterite) to micrometres (EAF and SS dust). Dusting, whether due to physical carryover of feed or to the arc side reactions, has been proven to be a non-issue. As such, the applications of DC open-arc furnaces have the potential to be extended to other raw materials such as particulate nickel oxide, which has a particle size much less than 100 µm.Nickel oxide is typically produced from laterite ore by sulphuric acid leaching, purification, and precipitation as basic nickel carbonate (BNC) (Rhamdhani, Jak, and Hayes, 2008) or as mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) (Mackenzie, Virnig, and Feather, 2006), and finally calcining at moderate temperatures (800–1200°C). The NiO product is very fine, with an average particle size in the range of 10–20 µm and a NiO content of more than 99%."

To aid in designing a continuous system for evaluating processes for converting coal to high-Btu gas] the Bureau of Mines determined the amenability of various coals and a char to hydrogasification at 800° C and 6,000 psig using a molybdenum catalyst. A lignite from Rockdale, Tex., an hvCb coal from Rock Springs, Wyo., a char from the low-temperature carbonization of the latter, an hvAb coal from Pittsburgh, Pa., and an anthracite from Luzerne County, Pa., were selected. Highest yields of gaseous hydrocarbons, 94 pet, based on maf feed, were produced from char, and lowest yields, 67 pct, were obtained from lignite. Hydrocarbon gases contained 82 to 92 pct methane, 8 to 15 pct ethane; and 1 to 3 pct propane.

The activity coefficients of oxygen in liquid Pb-Sn alloys have been measured between 550 and 1100°C by use of solid oxide galvanic cells: Pt, Ni-NiO | Zr02 Solid electrolyte | O (Pb + Sn), Cermet, Pt; and Pt, Fe-FeO | Zr02 Solid electrolyte | 0(Pb + Sn), Cermet, Pt. Alcock and Richardson's quasi-chemical equation, with the coordination number of atoms set to 2, is found to predict successfully the activity coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The relative partial molar enthalpy and entropy of oxygen at 1 atom per cent in the alloys have been calculated from the variation of the activity coefficient with temperature. The addition of Sn to an unsaturated solution of O in Pb is shown to decrease significantly both the partial molar enthalpy and entropy of O. As the measurements were restricted to a narrow range between 750 and 1100°C in Pb-rich alloys, however, the pronounced variation of the partial molar enthalpy of O with temperature at constant alloy composition predicted by the quasi-chemical model could not be verified.

The extraction of groundwater to produce gas from coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs has highlighted the opportunity for beneficial uses of groundwater in Australia. This paper presents an assessment of alternate groundwater modelling approaches that can be used for assessment of one beneficial use option, that of injection. This assessment examines the outcome of the use of different simulation methods on predictions of hydrodynamic behaviour.In this paper, a simplified hydraulic concept of a multi-aquifer system within the hypothetical injection field was used to investigate the hydrodynamic behaviour of injection into the Precipice Sandstone. Comparisons were made through the analysis of a Theis 3D analytical solution with 2D and 3D numerical solutions. The paper discusses the different solution methods and the impact of these on predictions of pressure and flux. Differences in 2D and 3D solutions result in implications if planning injection as a beneficial use of water. For example, the 2D solution resulted in faster and higher injection pressure build-up when compared to the 3D solutions. The 2D modelling could result in either plans that require higher capital expenditure for a greater number of wells in order to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure or a reduced injection rate. Meanwhile, the 3D modelling with sensitivity analysis could result in planning for lower capital expenditure for fewer wells required to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure. The land-pebble district of Florida, wnich in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of lime) or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the washing and formerly lost supplied the feed. During October, 1927, the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began to investigate the amenability of phosphatic sands to gravity methods of concentration. The work was under the immediate supervision of B. W. Gandrud, acting supervising engineer of the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. More comprehensive testing followed and in the early part of 1930 some of the companies cooperated with the bureau and the above-mentioned institutions in conducting a series of tests on hydraulic classification and tabling. The results indicated that marketable concentrates could be obtained with a recovery of 25 to 45 per cent of the phosphate formerly lost. As a result two companies have introduced hydraulic classification to treat the current tailings, and one of them has substituted classifiers for the 20-mesh screens which had been unsatisfactory. Because the phosphate grains and quartz grains have nearly the same specific gravity, the use of concentrating tables by the customary methods is not applicable. The washeries included in the following report are designated as Nos. 1, 2, and 3.
