The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

"La Mine Doyon is a gold mining operation located in northwestern Quebec, approximately 35 km east of Rouyn-Noranda and 85 km west of Val d'Or. The mine is jointly owned by Lac Minerals Ltd. and Cambior Inc. with Lac Minerals as the manager. Production statistics as of February 1987 are 6.4 million tonnes milled at an average grade of5.8 g/t Au. Current reserves of9.9 million tonnes at 5. 7 g/ t Au to a depth of400m have been outlined. Indicated reserves below this horizon could considerably increase this reserve.The mine currently consists of two open pit and two underground mine operations, producing approximately 3600 tonnes per day of ore at an average grade of6 g/t. The ore is currently processed at the La Mine Doyon mill at a rate of1400tid and at Lac's East Malartic mill at 1950 t/d. Ore is also processed intermittently at Lac's Les Terrains Auriferes mill and at Noranda's Horne Division.La Mine Doyon is currently in the midst of a program to expand and upgrade the mill at La Mine Doyon. The expansion to 3000 t/day includes the conversion of the existing crushing and grinding circuits to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill circuit and the existing filter wash plant to a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) recovery plant. The economics of this project are based on reduced operating costs (milling and trucking) and improved recovery due to updated technology. HistoryThe area between Noranda and Val d'Or has a long history of mining activity in both base metals and gold, dating back to the early 1930s. More recently, several new orebodies have been discovered and exploited in the area including La Mine Doyon, Lac's Mine de Bousquet, Dumagami, and the Kiena operation.La Mine Doyon was discovered in the early 1970s, and brought into limited production in late 1979. The mine was started on are reserves of 2.75 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t and was, thus, considered a small, short-term operation. Mining started at an initial rate of 550 tI d with all the ore being shipped to Noranda's Horne smelter as flux. When Lac's East Malartic mill became available for custom milling, Doyon commenced shipping to that facility at a rate of 650 t/d. As a result of some equipment additions and an improved understanding of the ore, the East Malartic mill throughput was gradually increased from 650 t/d to the current rate of 1950 t/d."

Investments in fuel minerals and non-fuel minerals by petroleum companies are not a new phenomena. During the past 25 years, oil firms have entered mining via the acquisition route as well as by the direct development of grassroots mines. In the early 1980s, the "merger mania" in the natural resource industries came to a head. Oil company takeovers of mining firms, as well as other mergers between oil producers, captured headlines repeatedly, and speculation ran wild as to who would next acquire whom. Table 1 summarizes leading mining company mergers in the past two decades. There are some special features to the latest round of minerals investments undertaken by oil companies. First, direct takeovers of mining companies have become the preferred means of entry into minerals, with entry from scratch being relegated to the sidelines. This was not always the case. While there are instances of oil firms buying coal and copper companies dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, most of the early minerals work by petroleum firms was from internally generated projects. When the oil companies first became involved in uranium, for example, the uranium mining industry was in its infancy. There was not much market structure to buy, and it was relatively easy for everyone to get into uranium on the ground floor.

"Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk models and asbestos fiber counting techniques for monitoring airborne exposures treat all fibers as being equivalent and ignore the effect of dimension on toxicity. While this may have been appropriate when modern analytical methods were not available, the measurement world is now fully capable of making the appropriate distinctions. The importance of width as a determinant of carcinogenicity has been recognized for nearly 30 years within the published literature. Stanton,1 in a landmark study of a suite of fibrous materials, found that durable mineral fibers with widths less than 0.25 mm and lengths longer than 8 mm were causally associated with the induction of tumors. Pott,2 in a later study, postulated a fiber toxicity model that agreed reasonably well with the Stanton findings, but extended the concept to include varying toxicity as a function of length and width. Wylie et al.3 reanalyzed samples used by Davis et al.4 and found that tumor generation was strongly and inversely correlated with fiber width. Crump5 testified increasing fiber length was correlated with disease occurrence. Lippman6 reviewed a number of studies and suggested that mesothelioma was closely associated with long, thin fibers. Berman et al.7 published a risk model, which found that disease was correlated almost exclusively with fibers longer than 40 mm and width less than 0.25 mm. Recently, Loomis et al.8 reanalyzed textile mill samples and found that aspect ratios greater than 40:1 were highly correlated with disease. Incorporation of width into risk models has been limited by the availability of data from operating asbestos plants and, in particular, the observation of an asbestos plant for which there is no observable mesothelioma. There have been only limited studies published on the dimensions of asbestos fibers, with a few serving as the primary references in other literature.9_13 A rare opportunity to collect detailed concentration and dimensional data of airborne crocidolite from an operating asbestos-cement plant using modern analytical procedures arose, providing a chance to supplement the existing literature on airborne fiber dimensions. The asbestos-cement plant is located in the eastern end of Cochabamba, Bolivia along Highway 4. Cochabamba is a relatively large city located in the Andes Mountains, approximately 250 km southeast of the capital La Paz. The city sits in a valley that runs east-west with mountains to the north and south. The crocidolite used in the products made at this facility is mined in central Bolivia, approximately 75 km northwest of Santa Cruz. The crocidolite is a fibrous magnesioriebeckite 14 (blue asbestos). Crocidolite fibers from Bolivia were the subject of prior reports suggesting the fibers are generally longer and thicker than crocidolite from Australia or South Africa.9 At the cement plant, the run-of-mine crocidolite was first pulverized using a hammer mill and then sieved on vibratory sieves to produce fibers of limited size ranges for use in the cement. The sieved crocidolite is mixed with other components, including recycled cement product, to produce a slurry that is vacuum filtered into sheet form. The sheets are then manually molded into a corrugated shape, air dried, and sawed (using circular saws) to accepted dimensions. The sawed sheets are cured in soaking pits for 28 days before being shipped to the consumer. Prior to shipping, the sheets are finished by a light hand sanding followed (at customer request) by applying one or more coats of paint. The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to investigate thin suppression of respirable dust by water sprays on a continuous-mining machine. Determining the importance of the top and bottom sprays for two types of spray nozzles was emphasized. Results showed, at a 90-pct confidence level, that (1) at least 70 pct of the dust was generated during the sump cut, even though nearly half of the coal was mined during the downshear operation, (2) the water sprays on the top of the boom had little effect in suppressing respirable dust, and (3) B.D. 5 spray nozzles mounted beneath the boom reduced dust at least 33 pet more than B.D. 5 sprays mounted on top of the boom. A single-cut technique was developed that gave good reproducibility for replicate cuts (coefficient of variation of 20 pct).

The objective of this work was to prove repeated loading capacities and investigate the selectivity of physically stabilized algal biomass from Spirulina platensis and Chlorella sp. for the removal and recovery of cobalt, nickel and chromium from laterite heap leach liquors. The testwork was carried out on a bench scale in small glass columns and proved that it was possible to immobilize the biomass on the highly porous surface of pumice stone (kissiris). Nickel and cobalt could be removed from pure aqueous solutions of each metal by the immobilized cyanobacterial biomass. Nickel and also cobalt biosorption was sensitive to the initial solution pH. Cobalt recoveries up to 80% were achieved after 5 loading cycles, from low concentration solutions, at pH 6.0. Nickel removal was complete under the same conditions, whereas chromium sorption was ineffective. Desorption of the metal loaded columns was effected by dilute sulfuric acid. The algal species giving the best adsorption capacities for the metals under consideration was selected for further experimental work with real laterite heap leach solution produced by column leaching. A statistical analysis of all obtained results was conducted using the fraction of metal removed as response. The ratio "mass of metal removed to mass of protein contained in the immobilized cells" was determined as well. The described method might be applicable for recovery of cobalt and nickel from diluted laterite heap leach solutions, such as heap wash waters, or for their removal from waste streams of a hydrometallurgical extraction process.

O descarte deste material é realizado na entrada da Linha de Galvanização Contínua (LGC) da CSN-PR, sendo o processo de descarte feito de forma manual baseado em critérios visuais, acarretando em diferentes resultados por turno de operação, assim como o descarte desnecessário de material bom como sucata na maioria dos casos. Este trabalho aborda o estudo e desenvolvimento de um projeto conduzido através da metodologia do Lean Seis Sigma, automatizando a decisão do descarte e atingindo à máxima utilização do material dentro da especificação de espessura, diminuindo assim o trecho fora de bitola descartado como sucata na entrada da LGC, o que afetava diretamente o indicador de Rendimento Metálico da linha.

The Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operates the Muruntau heap leach project, located in the Kyzylkum desert of central Uzbekistan. The mine produces more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) of gold from low-grade oxide ore stockpiles adjacent to the Muruntau open pit. It is op¬erated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine and is one of the largest gold resources known (Fig. 1). Since commissioning in 1995, total heap leach production has exceeded 21 t (675,000 oz). The joint venture uses four-stage crushing and screening to produce a final product for heap leaching, Merrill-Crowe processing and local refining.

Underground testing was carried out by Ingersoll-Rand, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of a machine-mounted scrubber system for ventilating the face during an extended advance. A continuous miner equipped with an integral flooded-bed dust scrubber system was instrumented with methanometers and Real-time Aerosol Monitor (RAM) dust monitors. Methane and respirable dust data were collected at brattice setbacks of 7.5 m (current operating distance), 10.5 m, and 15 m (blowing ventilation) during production shifts. Results showed that a suitable machine-mounted scrubber system can adequately ventilate the face at brattice setbacks up to 15 m. No deterioration in ventilation performance was observed as brattice setbacks were increased from 7.5 m to 15 m. The scrubber system effectively controlled face methane levels at large setbacks, though respirable dust levels increased as much as 33 pct at the operator's cab at setbacks greater than 7.5 m.

ABSTRACT: The Kupol project, located in Far East Russia, treats a high-grade, free-milling ore containing 25.5 g/t Au, 298.3 g/t Ag, and 0.5% pyrite,with a P70of 53 microns. Most of the gold occurs as elec-trum and the silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite, andproustite. The mill reached the design throughput of 3,000 tpd six months after start-up. AKnelson con-centratorrecovers10.4% gold and 0.5% silver. Leaching (14.5 hours pre-treatment and 116 hours cyanidation)of gravity tailings is performed with the CANMET Enhanced Leach Process (CELP),using only 490 ppm NaCN (cyanide consumption of 1.1 kg/t). The precious metals are recovered by counter-current decantation and the Merrill-Crowe process. Calcium hypochlorite destroyscyanide and thiocyanate. Overall, gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6%,respectively (2.8% and7.5% higher than targets). In the first eight months of 2009, gold and silver recoveries were 95.0% and82.6%, respectively. By August 2009, the mill processed 1.42 million tons of ore with production of 1.1 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver. CELP performance was not affected by changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Additional modifications to the leaching strategy allowed further reduction in cyanide consumption and effluent treatment costs.

In being asked to present this paper on the improvements in loading and hauling equipment and the effect on unit costs, Mr. Van De Water, your program chairman, stated that his reason for coming to a contractor was due to the wide experience of, and I quote: "a large contracting firm using a variety of equipment on varying types of earth moving jobs." We people in Utah Construction Company are flattered that Mr. Van De Water singled out our Company for this assignment. Utah Construction Company's participation in open pit mine stripping antedates the 1920's, when overburden was being removed from copper ore in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Our first stripping con¬tract for the Copper Company was finished in 1912. Since that early beginning, Utah has, as a contractor, been engaged to strip and mine iron ore properties, coal properties, copper properties, uranium properties, phosphate,-gypsum, limestone and dolomite properties. And, as you know, the Company has become a major producer of iron ore from Company-owned open pit mines. Utah Construction Company has been instrumental in the evolution of open pit mining tools. Some of the first tools were the old wood and coal fired stream shovels which had to be fired hours before a shift started to insure a full head of steam, providing power to excavate with the then large 1-1/2 cubic yard buckets. Today, Utah's strip mining is done, with 18 cubic yard and 10 cubic yard crawler shovels. Yesterday's horse and mule drawn, iron wheeled wagons, with 1 and 2 cubic yard capacity, which were hand dumped by removing the false bottom, one 2 x 4 at a time, have been replaced by today's- 50-ton capacity, hydraulic, rear dump trucks and giant 40-ton coal haulers. Utah Construction Company used the early fresnes and wheeled scrapers which were horse and mule drawn. Often, an operator holding too tightly to a handle was thrown into his horses when a hard spot turned the scraper, a contrast with today's 20 and 25 cubic yard, self-powered diesel and diesel electric Gargantuan rigs; with power controls that relieve the operator of practically all physical work. This Company has pioneered many of today's advances in equipment with shop made prototypes, features of which were adopted and elaborated upon by equipment manufacturers.

In order that a logical conclusion may be reached regarding the possible occurrence of commercial iron deposits in Canada it is necessary to consider some important producers found elsewhere on this continent. A study of such deposits reveals the fact tl:~at a number of distinct types are producing large tonnages of ore. These types may be classified according to origin and occurrence as follows: (1) Bedded sedimentary deposits. (2) Contact metamorphic deposits. (3) Residual ores. (4) Lenses in metamorphic rocks and m some cases of uncertain origin. In addition to the types listed there are other deposits which have contained or do contain considerable ore and they either have not been worked on a large scale or they have been nearly exhausted. These include the following types: (1) Magmatic segregations. These are mostly titaniferous magnetites. (2) Dikes of magnetite of igneous origin. (3) Bog and lake ores in glacial drift. (4) Black sand placers.

An effective way to decrease the dephosphorization burden in the current vanadium extraction-steelmaking process is slagging with CaO in vanadium extraction step. The phase composition of vanadium slag with different basicity and the regularities distribution of elements have been investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy combining with energy disperse X-ray spectrometry, respectively. The results indicate that V mainly concentrates in the spinel phases; Ca and P are rich in the silicate phases. Fe2SiO4 transform to CaFeSiO4, while the basicity of vanadium slag is 1.3. With further increase of basicity, 2CaOSiO2 could form in the silicate phases. Moreover, the phosphorus-containing phase will transform from Ca3(PO4)2 to Ca3(PO4)2-nCa2SiO4. With the increase of P2O5 content, the crystallization rate of spinels decrease obviously. Furthermore, the peak temperature for crystallization of spinels decrease 5 K with the P2O5 content increasing 1 wt%.

The stratiform and vein-type pyritic silver-Iead-zinc-copper sulphide deposits of Sunny Corner, NSW are hosted by acid volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks of Middle Silurian to Early Devonian age. The rocks have been subjected to low-grade regional metamorphism (prehnite-pumpellyite facies) and three phases of folding and four faulting events are recognised. Pyrite is intensely fractured, indicating brittle deformation. Chalcopyrite and galena exhibit deformation twins and slip planes indicating ductile deformation; sphalerite and chalcopyrite show straight and curved grain boundaries and dihedral angles of 120° as evidence of annealing recryslallisation. Sulphur isotope ratios for 22 samples from five deposits range from 1.7 to 10.7 per mil and average 7.4 per mil. Sulphur isotope data are similar to those from other stratiform sulphide deposits in acid volcanic rocks of Late Silurian age in the eastern Lachlan Fold Belt, especially Woodlawn and Captains Flat and together with other features of the mineralisation, suggest a volcanic exhalative origin for the Sunny Corner deposits.

The inherent heating value or the amount of heat that will be produced when a coal is completely burned is measured in British thermal units (B. t. u.) per pound of coal . This standard heat unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 °F . at about 60 °F . The amount of inherent heat is determined by burning a small quantity of the coal in a heat meter or calorimeter , which gives results in British thermal units . The exact manner of making this test is standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials.4/ The value so determined is the total heat developed by complete burning, with all the products of combustion cooled down to the temperature of the calorimeter . The calorimeter is kept at about room temperature . This total heat is sometimes called the " high" or gross heat value , because it includes the latent heat given up by the water vapor in the products of combustion when the vapor condenses to water in the calorimeter . The heat as measured is reported as the heat of combustion at constant volume , since the burning is carried out in a tightly closed calorimeter chamber whose volume does not change . In actual use , coal is usually burned in an open - end chamber at constant pressure , generally somewhere near atmospheric . As the heat of combustion of coal at constant pressure is very slightly higher than the heat of combustion at constant volume , it might be considered that the heat at constant pressure should be used as the standard reference base . For an ordinary eastern coal the heat at constant pressure is about 16 B. t . u. per pound higher than the heat at constant volume . Calorimeter corrections , ordinarily not considered , that could have been subtracted from the heating value before reporting , may amount to about as much . Hence , the value reported is apt to be more nearly the true heating value at constant pressure than at constant volume .

Esta tecnología utiliza diferentes tipos de biomasas como: algas, hongos, levaduras, bacterias, microorganismos y sub-productos agrícolas. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las ventajas de reutilizar dicha biomasa, tales como el bajo costo de operación y la elevada capacidad de remoción de metales pesados, sobre los métodos de remoción convencionales.

Internal friction measurements from 25° to 1100°C have been made on specimens machined from TD nickel bar. The use of miniature torsional pendulum specimens alloived damping measurements to be made on specimens whose axes were parallel to the original bar axis, at 45 deg to the bar axis, and at 90 deg to the bar axis. There was a marked difference in damping with varying specimen orientation, and this was related to the pronounced micro structural anisotropy of this material. Varying the microstructure by cold working plus re crystallization annealing also greatly affected the damping behavior. Recrystallization essentially removed the broad peak found at 400° to 650°C in as-received TD nickel, and in addition greatly lowered the background damping. DlSPERSION hardened metals such as SAP-type alloys (Al + AI2O3) and TD nickel (Ni + 2 pet ThO2) have been developed primarily to improve high temperature strength properties. There have been numerous damping studies on SAP-type alloys,1"9 and one of these6 showed that the damping capacity was greater than that of 99.5 pet pure Al from 25° to 600°C. Several preliminary observations on TD nickel10 and an experimental Ni-ThO2 alloy11 indicated that here, too, the damping capacity was quite high. A high damping capacity in TD nickel, combined with its relatively good high temperature creep strength, could provide an additional benefit for some high temperature structural applications. This work was undertaken to study the internal friction behavior of TD nickel bar over the temperature range 25° to 1100°C. In Ni-ThO2 and Ni-Cr-ThOz alloys, other properties such as steady-state creep rate,12 creep rupture life,12'13 modulus of elasticity,14 and ultimate tensile strength,14 are sensitive to orientation with respect to the primary working direction. Thus, in order to examine anisotropy effects in damping, studies were made on specimens machined with their axes parallel, at 45 deg, and transverse to the original bar axis. MATERIAL DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The material used in this investigation was from the same £ in. diam TD nickel bar that has been studied previously.13'15 The structure typical of the as-received TD nickel is shown in Fig. 1, and additional details of the structure can be found in Refs. 13 and 15. Elongated grains are parallel to the bar axis and are about 10 to 15 u long and about 1 u in diam. This structure is very stable, since no recrys-tallization or grain growth occurred after annealing for 3 hr at 1300°C.13 The total ThO2 content was 2.3 vol pct and the particles ranged in diameter from 100 to 1000. The average particle diameter was 370Å and the mean planar center-to-center particle spacing was 2340Å. To examine the influence of grain and subgrain structure on damping, a section of TD nickel bar was swaged and drawn at room temperature from 1/2 in. diam bar to 0.040 in. diam wire (99.3 pct re-duction in area). The structure in Fig. 2 resulted after the wire was annealed for 3 hr at 1250°C. At low temperatures, however, these hydrides can be retained in a metastable state at atmospheric pressure after being cooled under the high pressure to liquid nitrogen temperature. This review will discuss the current state of studies on phase transformations in the Fe-H and related systems and also on the composition, crystal structure and physical properties of the hydrides, both under high hydrogen pressures and in the "quenched" metastable state at ambient pressure. The studies at ambient pressure include magnetization measurements, X-ray and neutron diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering. In the sections on Mossbauer and structural investigations of hydrides of Fe-Cr and Ni-Fe alloys new experimental results will be presented.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the impact of the depletion allowance upon the economic availability of copper from domestic deposits. The potential long-run percentage depletion deduction, cumulated over the life of the properties, was estimated at approximately $2.5 billion for producing properties and up to $11.7 billion for nonproducers. The income transfer, in the form of higher Federal income tax payments if the allowance were repealed, was estimated at $1.5 billion for producing properties and up to $8 billion for nonproducers. The percentage depletion allowance, through its role in determining Federal income tax liability, was found to be very significant in affecting profitability. Repeal of the allowance could result in major domestic copper availability reductions at all price levels, now and in the future, as a result of reduced profit margins for current producers, and postponement of development decisions for nonproducers. It was demonstrated that a 50-percent reduction in the percentage depletion rate applicable to copper would also result in a significant decrease in profitability for nonproducing properties. For producing properties, the percentage depletion rate on copper was shown to be less significant than the income limitation that is placed upon the total amount of the depletion deduction. Repeal of the minimum Federal tax provision was shown to be significant in enhancing profitability for both producing and nonproducing deposits. The report concludes that the percentage depletion allowance operates as an important method of capital recovery and production incentive.
