Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de carbureto de cálcio durante o vazamento das corridas do aço 1026-D nestas variáveis, através da análise estatística e termodinâmica de dados de corridas experimentais, com e sem adição de carbureto de cálcio. Foi demonstrado que a adição desse insumo melhora de forma significativa os parâmetros metalúrgicos de qualidade do material e reduz o custo de transformação para a fabricação desse produto através da redução do consumo de ferro-ligas.

Seven pyrite samples purified from coal sources and one ore source pyrite (for comparative purposes) have been characterized by chemical and mineralogical analyses, inherent floatability, apparent specific gravity, surface area, semiconductor type, optical anisotropy, dissolution and oxidation rate. The data clearly demonstrate that pyrites from various coal sources differ not only from ore pyrite but from each other as well.

The purpose of the investigation was to determine the oxidation behavior of selected tungsten-cobalt alloys. Specimens of Wand W-Co containing 0.7, 1.7, 3.4, and 9.7 weight-percent Co were subjected to pure 02 at 1,000° and 1,100° K, and specimens of W-Co containing 29.8 weight-percent Co, at 1,100° K. Reaction kinetics were determined volumetrically. For specimens other than those containing 29.8 percent Co, the reactions proceeded at about a constant rate at either temperature, indicating the formation of a scale of constant protectivity; the reaction rates were essentially independent of the Co concentration. The scales on these alloy specimens consisted principally of WO3 and CoWO4. Specimens of a 29.8 weight-percent Co alloy, consisting primarily of the W6CO7 phase, oxidized with only slight deviations from the parabolic rate law at 1,100° K. The protective scale on these specimens consisted chiefly of Co3O4, CoW04, and W1 8°49; Co3O4 was outermost, and the W18O49 was adjacent to the alloy. The results suggest that the Co-rich outer scale inhibited the inward transport of 0 to an extent sufficient to greatly limit the amount of the nonprotective WO3 formed, so that protective W18O49 formed instead.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you, on behalf of the Council and Administration, to this University and extend to you our very best wishes for a most successful and stimulating symposium. We as a College of the University of N.S.W. were always proud of the excellent support we received from your Institute members and the close association that existed between our organisations. Now we have matured into the University of Wollongong and have to stand on our own feet, we will need all the support we can get from such bodies as yours to ensure that we are not only producing graduates but are also playing a vital role in the community. Although there is no planning for a school of Mining Engineering in the near future, we do look forward to this being a viable proposition eventually and we will then be able to offer to your Institute wider facilities for your activities and ones which will embrace both the Mining and Metallurgy phases. Thank you Mr. President.

One of the problems of the fabricator of metals and alloys is the propensity of some composition rarnges toward abnoermal grain growth during certain stages of fabrication. In this respect magnesium alloys are no exception among alloys. Fortunately, convenient foundry control methods have been developed by which the abnormal grain growth possible in certain magnesium-alloy castings can be suppressed. An unusual characteristic of magnesium alloys, however, is that castings of some composition ranges are subject to local grain growth during heat-treatment without the necessity of intentional mechanical stressing of the part prior to heat-treatment. This effect occurs only under certain critical casting conditions, and only in certain alloys of greater than about 8.5 per cent aluminum content, such as C alloy (Mg, 9 per cent A1, 2 Per cent Zn, 0.2 Per cent Mn) and G alloy (Mg, 10 per cent Al, 0.2 per cent Mn). The first observation of this phenomenon in cast magnesium alloys occasioned much surprise, since it is not observed in other meta1s- Jeffries and Archer1 have stated that "the grain size of cast metals, provided they have not been plastically deformed, cannot be changed by heating below the melting point." The study of the conditions leading to abnormal grain growth in cast magnesium alloys, and of the mechanism of this phenomenon, has led to some very interesting observations. Perhaps the most significant of these was the observation that stresses originating from cooling contraction in magnesium-alloy castings are the only stresses necessary, under certain conditions, to cause local recrystallization and subsequent grain growth in the casting during heat-treatment. Before recent developments, this phenomenon of abnormal local grain growth Was a definite problem in the production foundry on C alloy sand castings. Illustrated (Fig. I) is a picture of a casting scrapped because of this defect. A mottled effect is produced in coarse-grained areas by suitable etching solutions. The properties of metal in the affected area are much impaired by such grain coarsening. Ultimate tensile strengths of half the normal value have been measured in metal of this nature. In this paper are described the techniques that have been developed by The DOW Chemical Co. for studying, and in large measure solving, this production problem. Also discussed are studies of the mechanism by which excessive grain coarsening occurs, and the fundamental conditions that produce this effect. The abnormal grain growth discussed in this paper will be referred to as "germinasium since this term has been definedl as any process leading to an abnormally coarse grain size. E. Windsor Richards, London, England:—In reading this paper the most interesting point to me mas the question of the maximum percentage of phosphorus allowable in the steel rail. Mr. Colby said, and we will all agree with him, that the engineer knew, and even a steel-rail maker grants that phosphorus is the most undesirable constituent of steel. We in England have been for a long time considering a specification for the supply of steel rails. This matter has been taken up by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Mechanical Engineers, the Iron and Steel Institute, the Institute of Naval Architects, and the Electrical Engineers. Committees have been formed,and the whole matter has received most careful attention. They arrived at last at an analysis which I will read: " The carbon is to be from 0.35 to 0.5 per cent.; the manganese from 0.7 to 1.0 per cent.; the silicon, not to exceed 0.10 per cent.; phosphorus, 0.07; and sulphur, 0.07 per cent." As to the phosphorus, which is the most important point of all in the analysis, we have for many years, and indeed until very lately, always agreed to supply steel which would not contain above 0.06 per cent. of phosphorus. Iron-ores are not quite as good now as they were formerly, and the manufacturers at the meetings of the committees referred to, tried to obtain an increase in the allowance of phosphorus. They asked the Sub-committee to agree to 0.08 per cent. of phosphorus. They tried all they possibly could to obtain that; but they failed. English engineers in Great George Street and all over England, representing the important Associa tions I have mentioned, would only agree to 0.07 per cent. and that is the maximum allowance of phosphorus. Mr. Colby is an able advocate, but with all his ability he would not have been able to persuade the English engineers to agree to 0.08 per cent.

"The aim of the project was to develop a methodology applicable to different South African coal types to be able to predict with a high degree of certainty what kind of reagent will be suitable for flotation of a certain coal type.The study included 5 coal samples from different collieries and included Highveld seam 3 and 4 coal (as one sample), Waterberg coal (zone 10 -11), Highveld seam 5 upper coal and Witbank seam 2 and seam 4 coal. Seam 3 and 4 (mixture) coal, Waterberg and the seam 5 upper coal were all found to be vitrinite rich coals. The coal characterisation study included petrographic analysis, proximate analysis, float-sink analysis, oxygen-containing functional groups, surface extraction, flotation release analysis and contact angle measurements.The flotation tests showed that the best reagents to float all of the coal samples studied are iso-decanol and dodecene. These reagents produced flotation products that are near to the release curve. Statistical relationship for predicting ash content and yield that can be expected for a certain coal type and selected collector was obtained. From the relationship, the accuracy of the yield is above 95% (p-value below 0.05) with a linear regression of 0.9289. The accuracy of the ash is slightly lower with a linear regression of 0.7841 but also above 95%."

This paper describes the results of a laboratory investigation conducted to obtain data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. Air and fuel requirements, rates of advance, com-bustion temperatures, and coke and fluid distributions are presented. The mechanism of oil recovery by in stiu combustion is discussed. Five crude oils ranging in gravity from 10.9 to 34.2"' API were prodrrced from a semiadiabatic, uncon-.solidnted sand pack by in situ combustion. Experimental conditions were varied over a wide range in order to determine the inter-relation-.ships of process variables. The mini-mum air flux requirement for self-sustained combustion was found to he less than 10 scf/hr-ft'l. The rate of advance of a self-sustained combustion zone was found to be nearly proportional to the air flux at the combustion front. The effects of presrure and injected air flux were studied in a series of experiments using a 21.2" API crude. A minimum air require-ment was observed at an air .flux of 20 scf/hr-ft'. The oil saturation con-sumed as fuel averaged 5.5 per cent of pore volume. The effect of air pressure was, found to be .small for experiments having high combustion eficiencies. This study should promote a better understanding of the problems and mechanisms involved in labora-tory investigations and field applications of the in situ combustion pro-cess. The data presented will be use- ful in the interpretation of results of field tests. When tempered with volu-metric sweep efficiencies, the data can be used in making preliminary economic appraisals of the process as applied to reservoirs containing high porosity unconsolidated media. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this work was to obtain laboratory data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. In situ combustion basically consists of (1) injecting air into a reservoir through selected input wells to create an air sweep through the reservoir, (2) igniting the crude at the injection well, and (3) propagating the combustion front through the reservoir by continued air injection. By this means, oil is swept toward producing wells in the area. The fuel for combustion is supplied by heavy residual material (coke) which has been deposited on the sand grains during distillation and cracking of the crude oil ahead of the combustion front. Recovery of petroleum by a combustion or heat wave process is not a new idea. F. A. Howard was granted a patent in 1923 on a process in which air and a combustible gas were pumped into an injection well and ignited.' Russian engineers reported on field experiments with a crude oil gasification process in 1935'. Other known early field tests include those conducted near Bar-tlesville and Ardmore, Okla., in 1942." More recently completed field tests include an inverted seven-spot by Sinclair Oil Co. in the Delaware-Childers field, Nowata County, Okla.'; a three-well and an inverted five-spot test by Magnolia Petroleum Co. in Jefferson County, Okla."."; and a test by California Research Corp. in the Irvine-Furnace field in Kentucky. The Worthington Corp. has completed a test in cooperation with the Forest Oil Corp. in Clark County, 111.l Several field tests are now in progress. Sinclair has acquired a 600-acre lease in the Humboldt-Chanute field, Allen County, Kans., and is under way with a large-scale operation. Three field tests are under way in California. The General Petroleum Corp. is conducting an inverted five-spot pattern test in the South Bel-ridge field in Kern County under a cooperative agreement with 11 other companies, including Continental Oil Co. California Research Corp. is conducting a four-well pattern test in Midway-Sunset field near Maricopa, and Richfield Oil Corp. is under way with a test in the Ojai field in Ventura County. Although the published information is valuable concerning results of field tests, little laboratory data other than that reported by Kuhn and Koch5 are available to aid in appraising the tests from a technical or economic standpoint. Engineering data needed to evaluate the process include the amount of air required per barrel of oil recovered, minimum injection rates which will support combustion, rates of advance, air required per unit volume of reservoir cleaned, amount of oil recovered, and amount of oil consumed as fuel. The present laboratory investigation was undertaken to provide these data for that portion of the reservoir swept by the combustion zone. The first phase of this investigation was exploratory in nature and was conducted at injection pressures less than 100 psig. Data were ob-

The portion of the earth's surface covered by peatlands has been conservatively estimated at over 420 million ha (Kivinen and Pakarinen 1980). It is estimated that there are about 170 million ha of peatland in Canada. New Brunswick contains about 140,000 ha. Harvesting of peat for horticultural purposes has been carried out in New Brunsiwck since 1942. This industry, and the potential for using peat for energy purposes, indicated the need for an accurate assessment of the resource. In 1975, therefore, the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources began a detailed peatland inventory. Assistance from the Canada Department of Regional Economic Expansion permitted acceleration of this program and field work was completed in 1982. Information gathered by the program will form the basis for a management plan for future use of the resource.

F. C. Bond (Consulting Engineer, Processing Machin-Dept., AllisChalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee) This is a very comprehensive paper. It deals with 1) size distribution functions, 2) energy-particle size relationships, and 3) criteria for grinding efficiency. The method of analysis used consists of tracing the increase and decrease of successive Tyler scale screen fractions as grinding progresses. The treatment is based upon the assumption that the work done in grinding is concentrated entirely upon the coarse size fractions in the mill. It is postulated that when a feed consisting entirely of particles of one size fraction is batch ground that finer fractions increase at a constant rate as grinding progresses, until finally each in turn begins to be ground and to decrease in amount. It is shown that under these conditions the empirical Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann log-log size distribution plot can be logically explained. It is difficult to imagine any condition of ball mill operation, or any probability analysis, which would result in no grinding contacts on the finer particles present. However, the authors' postulate must be accepted if their conclusions are to be sustained. They conclude that the equation expressing the for mation rate of each size fraction can be resolved into the G.-G.-S. size distribution equation, and that the curvilinear portion of the log-logsize distribution line represents the only particle sizes which are being ground as well as produced. The author's statement that the G.-G.-S. Eq. 4 applies only to the finer portion of the size distribution while the Rosin-Rammler Eq. 6 applies over the whole size distribution range certainly supports the view that an exponential equation of the Rosin-Rammler type corresponds more closely to actual size distribution than does the power law G.-G.-S. equation. However, the G.-G.-S. equation is used to derive Eq. 8 and Eq. 9, which state that the energy required to grind a ton through a particular mesh varies inversely as the particle size to the exponent -a , whic h is the slope of the extended G.-G.-S straight line. This is stated to apply to both batch and continuous grinding. The G.-G.-S. slope exponent thus becomes very important in all crushing and grinding analyses by this method. The authors include some data which can be used to test their conclusions, as described below: We will consider grinding a feed composed of 14 mesh (1190u) to -200 mesh (74u). The average of 17 Allis-Chalmers grindability tests on quartz gives a work index (Wi) of 12.77. The -200 mesh product should have 80 pct passing 41.6u or P = 41.6. The equivalent 80 pct passing size of the 14 mesh feed particles is considered to be the particle diameter, as is true for spherical particles. Thus F is 1190u. In the work index equation 10 wi 10 wi 127.7 127.7 P f 41.6 1190 = 16.1 kw-hrperton. In Table I the ball mill exponent for quartz is 1.0 and from Eqs. 9 and 10: w=kw-hr/ton =Constan/(do/di) = 16.1 ton so that (1190) Constant/ Constant and the Constant equals 259. The tons per horsepower-hour value is 0.0464, in agreement with Table IV. The exponents for other minerals are listed in Tabl e 11. In Table IIA, the kilowatt hours per ton required to grind these minerals between the same sizes as the quartz, both by the authors' method and the work index equation, are listed. According to the authors kw-hrperton = 259/(16.1)".

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention. At the last Annual Meeting of the Institute, Dr. C. V. Corless sketched the potential mineral wealth of Canada so clearly, graphically and with-all so entertainingly that one's imagination was fired with the promise held out to future generations for the tremendous expansion of the mining industry in the Dominion. Posterity will undoubtedly witness the fruit of much of the geographical search and survey that is now carried on by our government mining departments. Year after year the work advances, slowly but surely, new areas are . explored, older areas are surveyed in detail, the information being compiled in maps and reports of incalculable value to the prospector, the engineer and the general public. The immensity of the task of exploring, geologically, the outlying portions of the country, with the ultimate view of making valuable mineral discoveries, may be visualized from a study of Dr. Corless' paper and the subsequent discussion which took place and one becomes impressed with the fact that three-quarters or more of the problem can be included under the word "transportation". For instance Dr. Corless said, "The few geological explorers who have penetrated to these remoter regions . . . . . . have as a rule been compelled to stick closely to canoe routes,"; Dr. Goodwin remarked, "This barren Laurentian granite, which is put down on the maps as covering the greater part of this area, is the best guess the geologist could make from travelling along watercourses Within the next few years . . . . . . the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway will undoubtedly be extended to James Bay . . . . . . In order that we may be prepared for the probable influx of prospectors when transportation facilities to tidewater are provided, I think all available information on this district should be gathered together in handy form." All three-Corless, Goodwin and Cole-emphasize the well-known fact that explorers, geologists and prospectors working in new country must stick to the watercourses and that transportation by rail, road or water has always been the all-important deciding factor in facilitating the exploration and development of remote districts. Dr. Corless did, however, suggest other means of transportation in stating, "The aeroplane will be of assistance in future study of some parts of these remote areas."

Under the present emergency every consumer should store as much coal as he can. Although there is no shortage of coal, there is likely to be a shortage of labor to mine excessive quantities in the fall, and railroads cannot be expected to deliver coal promptly on account of the need for transporting war materials. Some miners must join the armed forces, and those who are left may be unable to mine coal as rapidly as you will need it when winter comes. When the first cold days arrive, there may be a shortage of trucks to deliver coal. Deliveries may be planned in advance, and your turn might not come until it is too late.

CAREFUL research into the nature of the metallic state has yet to discover, with any certainty, its essential quality. We do riot yet know, for sure, what it is that makes the metallic elements different from, if not actually unique among, all created things. We do know, of course, that metals have certain more or less characteristic properties-they are hard, strong, and tough, and good conductors of heat and electricity, and these so-called metallic properties provide a definition of a sort. How- ever, it is the structure rather than the behavior of the metals which gives the really fundamental information necessary to the understanding of metallicity. But this information is not easily obtained. Nature has a way of keeping secrets. But happily we do possess some knowledge of how a metal is built up, and it is this matter, rather than the presentation of a formal definition, that will be discussed here.

Este trabalho propõe a utilização de simulação computacional adotando princípios de volumes finitos para avaliação do escoamento gasoso em torre de apagamento de coque. Tal simulação poderá fornecer dados, favorecendo a aplicação de tecnologias para redução e controle de emissões de material particulado no período do banho do coque, assim como estimar as variações e características da pluma emitida com a instalação de dispositivos de controle ambiental. Neste estudo são destacados os principais fatores para aplicação da simulação computacional, considerando as condições de contorno; modelos de evaporação; propriedades termofísicas e previsão de saída. Como variáveis de entrada para o modelo apresentado, foram selecionadas a concentração e granulometria do material particulado de vapor d’água da torre de apagamento de coque, através de ensaio de isocinética; as características físico-químicas da água de apagamento; as condições estruturais da torre de apagamento de coque e ciclos de apagamento de coque. Para validar a proposta apresentada, são mostrados resultados baseados nas simulações com o modelo computacional proposto.

The No. 3 reverberatory furnace at Phelps Dodge. Corporation's Morenci, Arizona copper smelter first received oxygen from a new oxygen plant during October 1982 and began operation with oxygen-fuel and oxygen sprinkle smelting burners which burn concentrate with oxygen. The furnace was completely converted to roof-mounted oxygen-fuel firing in October 1982. All conventional air-fuel bridge wall burners were extinguished at that time. The novel arch-mounted oxygen sprinkle smelting system began continuous operation April 1983. Since startup, unit fuel requirements decreased and furnace throughput significantly increased. Furnace off gas SO2 strength increased from an average of 1.5% SO2 to an average of 20% using only oxy-fuel burners. Oxygen sprinkle burner operation also has given excellent results, with the furnace off gas strength increasing to 35%-60% S02. There has been a reduction in overall arch temperatures, an increase in matte and slag temperatures, and a lowering of furnace bottom buildup with oxygen smelting. Furnace off gas is blended with converter off gas and treated in a sulfuric acid plant.

The relationship between hydrothermal ore deposits and hot spring systems has received intensive study in recent years, particularly as a consequence of interest in the energy potential of geothermal systems. Base and precious metal deposition in surface pools and at shallow depths in modern geothermal systems has been recorded in numerous publications (1, 2, 3) Theoretical studies of hydrothermal fluid flow at depth, connected to surficial hot springs systems, have been presented by White and others (1), Cathles (2) , Henley and McNabb (3). As a result of these and additional studies, numerous hydrothermal ore deposits are thought to have originated as genetic parts of larger geothermal systems. In particular, it appears that metal precipitation is greatly enhanced in zones of boiling where volatiles and steam are escaping (4). High grade, near surface concentrations of base and precious metals, deposited as a result of partial vaporization of rising fluids, are such a common aspect of modern not spring systems that ore deposition models are becoming based on what may be called a geothermal model. In its most general terms, this model requires an anomalously high thermal gradient which acts as the driving force behind a convecting hydrothermal system. The water may be entirely meteoric or may be In part at least of other origins. The water migrates towards the higher temperature area, becomes heated, and picks up alkalies and metals by dissolving minerals along the fluid path. As water exits to the surface above the heat source, a mass balance requires the incoming hot water to rise to replace the lost water. As the water rises past the elevation where the hydrostatic pressure is insufficient to prevent boiling, then boiling will occur. Depending on the salinity and the temperature of the water, boiling can occur anywhere from great depths to near surface. Boiling results in a loss of volatiles, a pH rise in the fluid phase, cooling of the remaining fluid, a rise in oxygen fugacity, a concentration of salts in the remaining liquid, and precipitation of ore and gangue minerals.
