Selective chlorination of unroasted and roasted spent hydrorefming catalysts was studied between 300 and 600°C using the following gas mixtures : C12+CO, C12+N2 and CI2+air. Such materials contain Co, Ni and Mo compounds supported by alumina and/ or silica. They also contain variable amounts of V compounds, C, S, etc., accumulated during the life time of the catalyst. Direct oxychlorination of the C+S rich sample allows higher extraction rates than those obtained by the carbochlorination of the same roasted one. It seems that the roasting step doesn't favor the economic metals' recovery. Results of the chlorination of C+S poor spent catalysts, in the presence of CO, in the chlorinating gas mixture, or of carbon added to the sample, were comparable. Cobalt and nickel chlorides were .extracted from the chlorination residues by their dissolution with acidified water, whereas molybdenum and vanadium chlorinated compounds were recovered by selective condensation from the vapor phase. The recovery rates of valuable metals as well as the selectivity were higher for the chlorination of spent catalysts than results obtained by the hydrometallurgical processing of the same sample. Results of the scale-up of the oxychlorination of the unroasted sample confirmed those of the laboratory scale. The global recovery rates were about 88 pct of cobalt, 93 pct of molybdenum and 76 pct of vanadium. The carbochlorination was applied to the recovery of W and Ti from Denox catalyst that is a carbon and sulfur free one. Recovery rates higher than 99 pct at temperatures lower than 500 °C could be obtained. This may indicate that the chlorination process can be applied to the treatment of various industrial wastes or by-product containing transition and/or refractory metal compounds A flow - sheet for the pretreatment of these materials is proposed.

As part of an ongoing study to determine how the wear of mining tools affects dust generation, the Bureau of Mines has measured bit tempera-ture rise during cutting of abrasive rock. Radial bit wear-flat tem-peratures generated by linear cutting in Berea Sandstone were measured as a function of cutting depth and speed. Depths of cut (DOC) were 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in, and cutting speeds were 10, 40, and 80 in/s, respectively. Temperature sensing was accomplished by emplacement of a miniature thermocouple into the center of the wear flat. Temperatures observed ranged from 2000 to 5000 C. Correlation between depth and temperature was weak. Temperature increased linearly with speed at 1/2-in DOC, but data taken at 1/8-and 1/4-in DOC produced inconclusive results. The results indicated that at least for deeper cuts (1/2 in), bit temperature, and therefore wear, can be reduced by lowering the cutting speed.

The Bureau of Mines has developed test procedures and criteria for evaluating explosive reactivity of explosive-contaminated solid waste substances generated by U.S. Army ammunition plants. These substances are produced as explosive-contaminated sludge from wastewater treatment plants, residues from the burning of munitions and explosives on open ground, and residues from deactivation furnaces. The characterization of explosive reactivity is a prerequisite for disposal of such waste materials, which may be contaminated with primary explosives, propellants, or pyrotechnic materials. The Bureau has proposed two tests for this purpose. These tests were developed to evaluate the explosive reactivity as defined in Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), part 261.23(a)(6) and (7). These are the Bureau's gap and internal ignition tests, which determine the sensitivity to shock and thermal stimuli, respectively. This report also includes gap and internal ignition reference data for typical blasting agents, high explosives, propellants, and marginally reactive substances. These reference data were used to establish test criteria. The Bureau has evaluated over 400 samples of contaminated soil, sludge, and burning residues using these two test methods.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently completed phase 1 of a mapping effort that makes the United States the first nation to systematically acquire image maps of its underwater lands. In 1984, the USGS, as part of its mission to map and characterize the resources of the Federal lands, began a mapping effort in the newly proclaimed Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The goal was to provide sonar image maps of this frontier area within 10 years. The mapping program is on schedule, with two-thirds of the EEZ sea floor, approximately 2 million square nautical miles, happed in 7 years. The deep water EEZ (depth greater than 200 m) around the 50 states is now complete except for the North Slope of Alaska, where ice precludes our surveying with a surface ship. Phase 2 of the EEZ mapping effort will begin in 1994, focusing on the American Flag islands of the western Pacific. Approximately 1 million square nautical miles of sea floor remain to be mapped around the islands.

"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property. Later, lode deposits were discovered on slopes alongside the creeks. They would lease 4.6 ml (50 sq ft) lots and mine as deep as 7.6 m (25 ft). During the Civil War, the Confeder-

In 2009 Newmont Mining Corporation?s annual global spend on grinding media reached $94M USD, having doubled in the five years since 2004. The major contributing factor to the spend escalation during this period was unit consumable price, with total media consumption also rising as a function of annual ore tonnes milled. In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.

In Cleveland County, North Carolina, 1 ½ miles south of Kings Mountain, Foote Mineral Co. operates an open pit for the production of spodumene, feldspar, mica and commercial stone. Spodumene concentrate is sent to Foote Mineral's Sunbright, Va., plant and to other customers. Exton, Pa. and New Johnsonville, Tenn., plants produce lithium com- pounds sold to the oil industry for multipurpose lithium-base greases, to the metal industry as welding flux, to the air conditioning market and to the glass industry. Ceramic-grade spodumene, feldspar, and mica concentrates go to other processing companies from the Kings Mountain plant. Waste amphibolite is delivered to a neighboring quarry operation. Geology and exploration of the deposit have been described by T. L. Kesler, Chief Geologist of Foote Mineral Co., in the September 1961 MINING ENGINEERING. Measured ore reserves as published at that time were 20.7 million tons. The ore deposit consists of a series of lithium-bearing pegmatites enclosed in amphibolite and mica schist wall rocks. The general strike of the pegmatites is northerly, and in the southern part of the pit, they dip slightly towards the west. The largest body being mined has a fairly uniform thickness of about 200 ft. Other pegmatites in the pit area range from 20 to 100 ft in thickness. Minerals in the pegmatites are 20% spodumene, 32% quartz, 6% muscovite, 41 % feldspar and 1 % trace minerals.

Minera Sabinas (Grupo Peñoles), localizada en Sombrerete, Zacatecas, México, produce concentrados de cobre y zinc. Su proceso es un circuito de conminución de quebradoras y dos molinos de bolas en circuito cerrado con hidrociclones seguido de un circuito de flotación, a partir de mineral polimetálico extraído de una mina subterránea. Su problemática consiste en que la recuperación por flotación disminuye significativamente cuando minerales con contenido de pirrotita son procesados. La flotabilidad natural de la pirrotita supera la cinética de flotación de las especies de cobre y zinc y limita la capacidad de la concentradora para generar concentrados vendibles. Este artículo presenta un diagnosticó de los problemas que se tienen cuando se procesan minerales con alto contenido de pirrotita, así como resultados de un programa experimental a escala laboratorio realizado en el CIDT de Peñoles y en sitio. La investigación se enfocó en definir un esquema de reactivos para poder procesar minerales con pirrotita en su composición. Compósitos de alta y baja ley de cobre fueron usados en la investigación. Se identificó el agua de proceso como una fuente de iones calcio y sulfato. Se desarrolló un esquema de reactivos orientado a promover la selectividad de las especies de valor respecto a la pirrotita, incluyendo tratamiento del agua de proceso.

Niobium in kaolin clay from the Late Permian sequences was reported in the range of several hundreds of micrograms per gram and was considered as a potential resource for its high concentrations and large areal distribution. Ti-bearing minerals associated with kaolin clay were identified as the main host phase for niobium in some case studies. However, the correlation between the concentration of niobium and titanium is poor, and the types of Ti-bearing minerals and modes of occurrence of niobium are not clear. Typical kaolin clay samples from the Late Permian sequences from southwest China were characterized, and the final products derived from kaolin clay sample were investigated using XRF, ICP-MS, XRD, SEM, and TEM (EDS). The results reveal that there were three types of TiO2 mineral phases in the clay samples: (a) massive TiO2 minerals and (b) aggregates of nano TiO2 minerals did not contain niobium while (c) granular TiO2 minerals were the source of niobium from the EDS analysis. The granular TiO2 minerals included anatase and rutile, both of which were the sources of niobium in kaolin clay in the current study. The findings are of great theoretical implication for source and origin study of Ti-bearing minerals and guidance for separation and recovery of niobium from kaolin clay.

O fenômeno de colagem é a formação de aglomerados de pelotas, denominados clusters, devido à sinterização do ferro gerado durante o processo de redução. O resultado disto é a elevação da perda de carga nos reatores de redução direta. Tal fenômeno vem sendo estudado por vários pesquisadores, pois as práticas operacionais dos reatores têm priorizado o uso de temperaturas de bustle gas (BG) cada vez maiores, o que potencializa o aparecimento dos clusters. Uma alternativa para controlar a colagem é por meio de utilização de agentes de coating (AC’s). Em relação às matérias primas utilizadas como AC´s, as questões que surgem agora são as seguintes: Como se comportam os AC’s em temperaturas muito elevadas de BG? Qual seria a maior temperatura possível de BG? A fim de começar a entender a melhor maneira de responder a estas questões foram realizados alguns testes de caráter exploratório e não convencionais para avaliar o comportamento de alguns materiais de coating a elevadas temperaturas de redução. Os resultados destes testes mostraram a possibilidade dos AC’s funcionarem a temperaturas maiores que a de inicio do amolecimento da carga e que, nestas temperaturas, a sua granulometria pode ser parâmetro determinante para seu desempenho. O aprimoramento dos ensaios de simulação do processo de redução em reatores de redução direta é fundamental para responder as questões que se apresentam em relação ao tema.

The problem of stability of the development working at the great depths of coal winning is of great seriousness. Numerous researches of the problem were carried out in the USSR, the results of which determined that raising of resistance of existing support will not lead to a considerable rise of working output. It is necessary to try to find ways at the expense of heightening the support ability of rock massif. For these purposes it is necessary to direct it correctly and in proper time. While carrying the development working the most intensive deformations of rock occur at a depth of 30m from the entry face. The zone of destruction of rock around the work is realised here for 60 to 70 percent. These facts show that in influence zone of entry face a kind of embryo of the working steadiness is forming, which greatly determines its following conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to begin direction of mining pressure around the work directly in a face.Complex research of the mechanism was carried out starting with the effect of moving face upon the surrounding rock massif. It was ascertained, that the zone influenced by the face is a section of 5 equivalent diameters of the work by the length within which the rock of the sides, roof and floor, experience the cyclical influence of stresses at the time of cyclical shift of the face. The elastoplastec deformation is occurring with it at the moments of rock removal and the deformation of creeping takes place at such intervals.

"One of the most important advances in the world gold metallurgy is the introduction of adsorption technologies for processing of ores and concentrates. «Adsorbent-In-Pulp» process allows to eliminate pulp filtration that is especially important during processing of clay and slime bearing ores. “Adsorbent-In-Leach” process is one of the ways for processing of preg-robbing (carbonaceous) products. High efficiency, increased metals recovery, decrease in capital and operational costs, possibility of easy control and adjustment are the advantages of adsorption processes. Anion-exchange resins and activated carbons are used as adsorbents. This paper presents Irgiredmet experience on gold adsorption technology using both adsorbents (RIP, RIL, CIP, CIL processes). It includes results of long-term studies of different theoretical and practical issues of adsorption processes. Irgiredmet started development of ion exchange technology (RIP, RIL) in 1964. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for 15 RIP plants of the former USSR. During this test work a great number of newly synthesized resins including strong- and medium-base resins was studied, different types of adsorption feed (ores and concentrates) were tested; some theoretical regularities of adsorption process were investigated; the technology of two stage adsorption for silver gold ore, improved flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration, designs of technological equipment for adsorption, elution, electrowinning processes including pulsation columns, electrowinning cells etc. were developed. Irgiredmet took part in commissioning of practically all RIP plants in the former USSR. Due to its efforts RIP process became to be the standard technology. Last Irgiredmet RIP projects include the development of adsorption technology using medium-base resin for the three mines owned by GC Petropavlovsk (Amur region, Russia). The complex of the testworks on activated carbon gold adsorption technology including the search of prospective activated carbons; study on gold adsorption mechanism; development, testing and introduction of process flowsheets and the equipment for their realization was conducted. The original gold elution process was developed. The developed CIP technology was firstly introduced at Lebedinsky gold plant (Yakutia). Now carbon adsorption technology is widely used at Russian gold mines as CIP, CIL, CIC processes. The most relevant example of CIP introduction is Svetlinsky gold plant (Ural, Russia) with capacity 8 Mt of ore/ year."

An experimentally simple method for determining the effect of alloying elements on the activity of carbon is validated in Fe-Ni-C austenite. The technique consists of the equilibration of carbon between specimens of different nickel contents within a sealed silica capsule. The attainment of carbon equilibrium within each capsule is evidenced by: 1) in each capsule specimens of the same nickel content attained the same final carbon content regardless of their initial carbon contents, 2) in every capsule the final carbon content was reached for most nickel contents by carburizing and by decarburizing. The activity of carbon attained within each capsule was calculated from the carbon content of a binary Fe-C alloy placed within the capsule, and from the activity coefficient of carbon in the Fe-C system as found by Smith for CO/CO2/C equilibrium. The activity of carbon in Fe-Ni-C austenite determined by this method at 1000°C agrees with prior work by Smith, who used mother method. The measurements are extended to 800°and 1200°C. The activity coefficient of carbon 7c, in Fe-Ni-C austenite is given by: where xC is the ratio of carbon to metal atoms and XNi is the ratio of nickel to metal atoms and where the standard state is chosen such that yC = 1 as xc approaches zero in Fe-C alloys. This equation appears to be valid for xni < 0.3, and 1073° < T<1473°K. ThE activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite has been measured by smithL at 800°, 1000°, and 1200°C. Smith has also studied the effect of nickel on the activity A. J, HECKLER and P. G. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In essence the experimental technique consisted of enclosing specimens of various nickel contents in an initially evacuated silica capsule and annealing the capsule until carbon equilibrium was attained among the enclosed specimens. The carbon activity obtained within the capsule was determined from the final carbon content of the binary Fe-C alloy included in each capsule and the results of smith.&apos; In order to evaluate this method the absence of nickel transfer between specimens must be established and the attainment of carbon equilibrium between samples must be assured. The absence of nickel transfer was demonstrated in the case of an originally pure iron sample which was annealed at 1200°C in a capsule with a 27.3 at. pct Ni alloy. The final nickel content of the iron specimen was less than 0.1 at. pct, a change which has a negligible effect on carbon activity. The attainment of carbon equilibrium was demonstrated within every capsule and in over half the results by achieving the same final carbon content in a sample which carburized during equilibration and in a sample of the same nickel content which decarburized during equilibration. The base Fe-Ni alloys were vacuum melted from Ferrovac E or electrolytic iron and Mond or electrolytic nickel. The samples were rolled and/or swaged and their carbon content adjusted to the desired pre-equilibration level either by methane-hydrogen carburization or by direct carbon transfer from a graphite source in a sealed silica capsule. "The Waite-Amulet, an important copper-zinc mine, lies astride the Duprat-Dufresnoy township boundary about 8 miles northwest of Noranda, Quebec. It is an amalgamation of two properties, that of the former WaiteAckerman- Montgomery Mines to the north and that of Amulet Mines, Limited, to the south. This amalgamation took place in 1933. The description that follows is confined to the Amulet section.Ore was first discovered on the Amulet property in the autumn of 1924. The C Shaft and Upper A orebodies were found in 1925 and the F orebody in 1929, the latter by diamond drilling under a swamp. Under the present management, Lower A ore body was discovered by diamond drilling at a depth of 700 to 1,200 feet in 1938, and new ore was found from the old C Shaft workings between 1943 and 1945.From April 15th to October 20th, 1930, 60,291 tons of ore was produced from the Amulet. During the second half of this period, the ore averaged 4.2 per cent copper, 16.3 per cent zinc, and 0.02 oz. gold and 3.35 oz. silver per ton. Due to the prevailing low prices of metals, there was no further production until July, 1937. Output was greatly accelerated in 1940 when the newly found Lower A orebody assumed the main burden of production. Up to January 1st, 1946, mill reports indicate the treatment of the following ore: GENERAL GEOLOGYFig. 1 shows the geology of the entire property. To the east is the Lake Dufault granodiorite stock and to the west the Flavrian Lake granite mass. Around the granodiorite and separating the Waite from: the Amulet section is an older diorite intrusion. The ore occurs in a series of lavas that form a broad anticline pitching eastward at a relatively low angle into the Lake Dufault intrusives. There are several steep east-west faults. The late Powell diabase dyke is shown, also the general areas of strong dalmatianite alteration, a type closely associated with the sulphide mineralization."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy (DOE), through its contractor EG&G Idaho Inc., are collaborating on a multiyear research project to evaluate the applicability of three-phase, electric arc furnace melting technology to vitrify materials simulating low-level radioactive and mixed wastes buried or stored at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and other DOE sites. The melter is a sealed, 1-t (1.1-st), three-phase, 800-kV?A electric arc melting furnace with 10.2-cm-(4-in?) diameter graphite electrodes, water-cooled roof and sidewalls, and four water-cooled feed tubes. A water-cooled copper fixture provides for continuous tapping of slag. An instrumented air pollution control system (APCS) with access ports for analysis and a feeder based on screw conveyors and a bucket elevator are dedicated to the facility. Test data are provided by an arc furnace analyzer and by sensors indicating feed rate; slag temperature; and temperature, pressure, and velocity in the APCS. These data are received by a data logger, digitized, and transmitted to a personal computer for storage and display. This unique waste treatment facility is available for public and private use on a cost-sharing basis.

El presente texto describe el proceso del diseño de la planta metalúrgica en la mina Mantos Blanco, Chile. La mina de cobre de Mantos Blancos es conocida desde 1913 y está situada a unos 45 Kms. al Noreste de Antofagasta, Chile. El mineral de Mantos Blancos es del tipo óxido y contiene solamente trazas de sulfuros que requieren de un chancado muy fino. Por ello se creó el diseño de un sistema de planta que maneje mejor esos componentes a través de la instalación de dos stockpiles, después del chancado primario, de forma que estos alimenten el mineral en forma controlada y proporcional y así aprovechr la alta proporción de carga recirculante en el circuito de chancado terciario, para obtener una íntima mezcla de los dos componentes.

At the Century mine in North West Queensland, MMG produces lead and zinc concentrates. The current production rate is close to 500 000 t of zinc per annum. Graphite is the main gangue in the orebody and a substantial quantity of chemicals are used to achieve an acceptable depression of graphite and other gangue materials in the current operation. In the future, it is anticipated that the content of graphite in the orebody will increase while the zinc grade will gradually drop. This scenario illustrates the importance of an optimised suite of flotation chemicals to maximise concentrate grade and recovery. As an alternative to the current reagent suite where dextrin is used to depress graphite, laboratory test work and subsequent plant trials were conducted with alternative depressants. These depressants facilitated both graphite depression and elevated zinc grades in the rougher concentrate. As an added benefit, it was also observed that the silica content in the zinc concentrate was reduced in the presence of the biopolymer selected for the plant trials. "GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

O lingotamento contínuo de tarugos é um processo extremamente complexo dependente de uma série de variáveis. Todas essas influenciam diretamente na qualidade do aço lingotado e na produtividade, quase sempre de maneira conflituosa. Para compreender o efeito dos parâmetros de processo, é necessário conhecê-los melhor e avaliar sua influência naquilo que é a base do lingotamento contínuo: a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Neste estudo foram levantados dados de temperatura durante o lingotamento de diversas corridas de aços em uma planta de aços longos especiais. As medidas de temperatura das paredes do molde da máquina LC foram obtidas, utilizando-se termopares estrategicamente posicionados ao longo do comprimento do molde e nas suas faces. Através da obtenção dos valores de temperatura desses termopares e do levantamento dos dados de processo de cada corrida monitorada, foi possível correlacionar o efeito da composição química com a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Por fim, os resultados mostram que aumentando o carbono equivalente observa-se um aumento na transferência de calor.
