The objectives of this research were to determine the practicability of using cobalt as a means of controlling the amount of ferrite in the micro-structures of semiaustenitic stainless steels, and to determine the effects of reduced ferrite content on mechanical properties of these steels. Cobalt additions of up to 3 weight-percent were made to type 17-7 PH2 (AISI 631) stainless steel. Ferrite contents were determined for alloys in the aged condition, and for alloys quenched from the hot working temperature. Ferrite can be completely eliminated from the microstructure of 17-7 PH stainless steel by additions of cobalt, but complete elimination of the ferrite phase results in lower tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. Tensile properties, hardness, and impact strength were determined for aged material. A subzero temperature treatment before heattreating was necessary to obtain maximum strength in the alloys containing cobalt. Addition of 2 weight-percent cobalt enhances mechanical properties of 17-7 PH stainless steel.

"The Line Creek Mine of Crows Nest Resources started mining coal in the fall of 1981. There are seven mineable seams with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 13 metres and with dips varying from 0 degrees to 60 degrees. This, together with internal partings and the very friable nature of the coal, creates a number of mining problems.The coal is divided into zones depending on the dip of the seam. Each zone requires a different mining technique to ensure optimum recovery and low dilution while still keeping fines to a minimum.Line Creek employs a combination of hydraulic front shovels and backhoes to mine its coal without blasting or use of dozers. This has been very successful in reducing the proportion of fine coal hauled to the plant, thus improving quality control and reducing costs in coal processing.There have been a number of other benefits from the use of excavators instead of more conventional methods. These include better selectivity, good cleanup, reduction in traffic at the face and lower cost.IntroductionThe Line Creek Mine is situated approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia (Fig. I). Preproduction stripping began in J98J with the first coal shipments made in 1982. In 1983 the mine produced 2.1 million tonnes of raw coal.Similar to other East Kootenay coals, the seams at Line Creek are characterized by their friability, producing a large proportion of fine coal during mining. In an attempt to reduce these fines Crows Nest Resources has instituted the use of hydraulic excavators to mine and load the coal.Hydraulic excavators offer other substantial advantages over front-end loaders and dozers, which has been the conventional system in other mines in the area."

The effect of alumina particles on the nucleation and growth of cracks through a silver- chloride matrzx has been investigated. It has been found possible to promote fibrous cracking in dispersion-strengthened silver, chloride under notch-impact conditions at temperatures at which silver chloride alone cleaves brittlely The modification) of fracture beIzavzor is thought to be due to the relaxation of hydrostatrc stress beneath a notch by the nucleation of cavities near alumina particles. In recent years, composite or dispersion-strengthened materials have been studied primarily to understand their high resistance to plastic flow particularly at elevated temperatures. Dislocation models have been developed with which it is possible to deduce with fair success the effects of interparticle distance, particle size, temperature, upon yielding and creep behavior.l-4 Much less attention has been paid to the fracture behavior of these materials (with the notable exception of common structural steels) and little is known experimentally about the manner in which inclusions affect the nucleation and growth of cracks through a matrix. Nevertheless a beginning has been made in connection with fibrous cracking in ductile matrices where inclusions appear to play an essential ro1e.5-7 During the severe localized plastic deformation which accompanies necking in a tensile test, cavities are believed to develop at inclusions; these cavities subsequently grow and coalesce by plastic flow until separation is complete. It is of interest to consider whether inclusions can affect fracture behavior under loading conditions which restrict the plasticity of the matrix itself (for example, cleavage under conditions of a high imposed strain rate at low temperatures). It is particularly interesting to study these effects in a solid which shows a spectrum of behavior ranging from fully ductile to semi-brittle behavior. Such a solid is silver chloride whose mechanical behavior depends sensitively upon temperature and strain rate.'," The present paper is concerned with a study of the influence of inclusions (in the form of alumina particles) on the fracture behavior of silver chloride loaded uniaxially at low strain rates at room temper- ature and also under notch impact conditions over a wide range of temperature. In particular, it will be shown that the alumina particles can exert a startling effect on the ductile-brittle transition temperature of notched silver chloride and that the magnitude and nature of the effect depends upon both the quantity of alumina and the shape of the alumina particles. 1. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1.1 Materials Used. Silver chloride powder of analytical reagent (AR) quality having an average particle size 6 was supplied by the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works (st. Louis, MO.). Acid washed 900 mesh alumina powder, designated A38-900, was supplied by the Norton Co. (Cambridge, Mass.). This powder was added to silver chloride in two forms: a) the as-received condition in which the individual particles were of random irregular shape; their statistical average size was 7; b) in a condition in which each particle was spherically shaped by a fusion technique. In this case, the statistical average particle size determined with the optical microscope was approximately the same (about 5p) but electron micrographic evidence indicated that many ultra fine particles were present in the spheroidized powder. 1.2 Preparation of Composite Materials. Silver chloride-alumina composites containing 2.5, 5, and 15 pct by volume of alumina were produced by the extrusion of mechanically mixed powders blended in a ball mill for 24 hr at room temperature. The mixtures were compacted at 50,000 psi at room temperature in the form of billets 3/4 in. in diameter and 1 in. long which were then extruded with a 16:l reduction ratio at 370°C through a radius-type steel die having a 5 deg lead-in angle. An extrusion temperature of 370°C was selected to ensure that all composites had sufficient plasticity to be extruded. Apart from this general requirement, the choice was arbitrary. 1.3 Microstructure of Composites. Attempts were made to check the distribution of alumina metallo-graphically by polishing transverse and longitudinal sections of the extruded rod. Specimens were wet-ground to 600 emery paper and lapped successively with 5 and 0.25-p grades of diamond paste. They were etched for 10 sec in 10 pct sodium thiosulfate solution and lightly polished in concentrated ammonium hydroxide. The most effective way to render the alumina particles and grain boundaries visible was to radiate the surface with intense white light to decorate the grain boundaries and the particle-matrix interfaces photolytically.

American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).

Contract H0242013 was originally to evaluate through underground tests, water spray systems for controlling respirable dust at the face of a longwall plow. A number of difficulties were encountered which made such an evaluation impractical. The contract was modified to evaluate, in the BCR dust tunnel facility, the live factors believed to affect respirable dust levels. A 60-foot long; plow face mock-up was constructed in the dust tunnel, a facility with controlled airflow and dust concentration. Six types of nozzles were tested with the following parameters: two nozzle orientations, two levels of water pressure, two levels of airflow, and with and without simulated airflow through the gob. Of these factors, the most significant in reducing respirable dust levels was nozzle orientation, where the nozzle directed 45 degrees downstream resulted in 27 percent lower dust levels than those directed 45 degrees upstream (against the airflow). Following in order of effectiveness were the higher water pressure and the lower airflow. All nozzles tested resulted in similar dust reduction, i.e., the type of nozzle was the least significant factor.

THE combination of high strength and corrosion resistance of cold-worked 18 Cr, 8 Ni steel has been advantageously utilized for some time, particularly in aircraft and rail car structures. There are, however, certain limitations on the use of such materials because the high strengths can be obtained only by cold-working, limiting the available products to sheets, strip, wire and tubes. The authors sought to overcome these limitations by resorting to precipitation-hardening, which has been used so successfully in nonferrous metallurgy but only to a limited extent in iron-base alloys. Accomplishment of this objective not only overcame the limitations, but also effected certain improvements in mechanical and other properties. This paper is an account of the development by Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation of a precipitation-hardening 18-8 stainless steel (called Stainless W? and tentatively identified as type 322). A description is given of its composition and metallurgical characteristics, heat-treatment, physical and mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW STEEL For a considerable length of time the authors were unable to determine the mechanism of the precipitation-hardening process that had been noted by Ffield 18,19 in 18-8 Ti or 18-8 Cb after cold-working and reheating to moderately elevated temperatures. All known variables were exhaustively studied, but with little success. However, results began to indicate that chemical composition was the most important variable, particularly the ratio of austenite-forming to ferrite-forming elements. The investigators 'then focused their attention upon the composition, and, in particular, upon the element titanium and its mode of alloying in the presence of other elements. A heat was obtained that could not be brought to the softness level of annealed 18-8. The response to cold-straining and aging* was very marked by previous standards, and, more important, cold-straining was found to be entirely unnecessary to produce the precipitation-hardening effect. The chemical composition of this heat was: C, 0.06 per cent; Mn, 0.54; P, 0.016; S, 0.016; Si, o.58; Ni, 7.28; Cr, 17.6o; Ti, 0.90; Al, 0.17. The Bureau of Mines investigated nitrous oxide (N20) stability when used as a solvent for organic removal from metal powder surfaces. Both supercritical and subcritical conditions were studied. This investigation was prompted by the occurrence of a violent reaction when supercritical N20 was being used to deoil a metal powder grinding waste sample that contained 20 to 25 wt pct cutting oil. Tests were conducted to determine the cause of the reaction and to define stability limits. Test data showed that the waste's oil fraction reacted violently with N20 acting as an oxidizer; the metal powder acted as a promoter to reduce the ignition temperature. Although the data were scattered, this temperature appeared to reach a minimum at a certain pressure (dependent on vessel and sample size). The minimum ignition temperature for a 0.64-g sample in a 72-cm3 vessel was 360° C at 200 psig. As the sample size increased, the ignition temperature decreased. For example, when the sample size was increased to 10 g, a reaction occurred at 240° C and 600 psig. Because of the variability of ignition temperature with pressure and sample size, safe operating conditions were not established. Overall, this research showed that extreme caution should be exercised when using N20 in an organic or organic-metal system.

THE territory under particular consideration in this article comprises portions of La Plata and Montezuma Counties, situated in the southwestern corner of Colorado, and around the base of the La Plata Mountains. (See Fig. 1.) In southeastern Utah and northeastern Arizona there are several mountain systems whose origin and structure are practically identical with the La Platas so that ore occurrences found in the latter can be hopefully looked for in the former. With this assumption, there is an area around the laccolithic ranges which offers promise for a successful exploration for gold ores. Ore occurrences of the Silverton, Telluride, Rico, or Ouray Districts will not be discussed, although in these areas the Mesozoic sediments are more or less involved within the ore-bearing complex. These have been intensively studied and developed. The idea is to set forth what my mining experience has been within the largely unaltered . Mesozoic horizon which remains around the extreme bases of the La Plazas. This, until recent years, has been almost entirely neglected by prospectors and operators and, so far as similar territory in Utah and Arizona is concerned, so remains.

Aços bifásicos ou Dual Phase são caracterizados por uma microestrutura ferrítico- martensítica, a qual consiste em uma matriz de ferrita equiaxial com 10 a 20% de martensita dispersa na forma de ilhas. Neste trabalho, utilizaram-se amostras de aço baixo C, micro adição de Nb e Mo, na condição laminada a frio (BFH). As simulações físicas nesse material, em escala laboratorial, foram conduzidas com o objetivo de avaliar a evolução microestrutural após redução de espessura através de laminação a frio e recozimento intercrítico com temperatura de encharque de 800 °C e permanência por 180 segundos na temperatura máxima, seguido de resfriamento sob duas proposições: em água (criticar a fração de austenita formado no encharque em função do potencial para recristalização da ferrita) e ao ar (inferir na formação de ferrita epitaxial e subsequentes transformações bainítica e/ou martensítica no decurso do resfriamento). Utilizando o auxílio da microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), observaram-se que para obtenção da microestrutura característica de um aço DP seria necessário o ajuste dos parâmetros de recozimento em função do percentual de redução na laminação a frio, ou seja, aumentando o percentual de redução do material é necessária a diminuição da temperatura ou do tempo de encharque para que sejam obtidos resultados adequados as características de um aço DP.

Tracer diffusion of Fe59 has been measured in the a-stabilized Fe-1.8 at. pet V alloy from 700° to 1500°C. The activation energies are obtained in both the presence and absence of magnetic order. Furthermore, it is established that diffusion in the alloy is identical to that in pure iron and consequently the values of Do and Q accurately represent the temperature dependence for self-diffusion. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain an accurate estimate of the temperature dependence for self-diffusion in bee iron in both the presence and absence of magnetic order, and, in so doing, to establish the temperature range of the magnetic effect.&apos;" As the temperature interval suitable for diffusion measurements is severely limited in both bee phases of pure iron because of the intervening fee ? phase, the experiments were performed on an a-stabilized alloy containing 1.8 at. pet V. This alloy is bee over the entire range from room temperature to the melting point. Although there have been several independent investigations of self-diffusion of iron in a, iron,1, 3-6 there still exists considerable disagreement regarding the values of Do and Q for the paramagnetic region. The two systematic studies of diffusion in 6 iron6, 7 previously reported are also only in fair agreement; but in view of the extremely small temperature range available for diffusion studies, i.e., 1390o to 1535oC, this is not surprising. It is comparatively easy to obtain accurate values of Do and Q for the a-stabilized alloy inasmuch as measurements can be made over the entire temperature range -700o to 1500°C. However, in order to assume that these same values apply to pure iron requires careful comparison of the data in the a, and 6 regions in both the alloy and pure iron. We have made several measurements in the appropriate temperature ranges and are unable to establish any systematic difference between the diffusion coefficients of iron in pure iron and in the alloy. We therefore conclude that the values obtained for the alloy are truly applicable to pure iron; the complete evidence favoring this conclusion will be discussed later in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental methods will be given here only in barest detail since they have been thoroughly de- scribed elsewhere.l, 7 The alloy was prepared by induction melting and chill casting under argon. Diffusion samples were machined from the ingot and annealed in hydrogen for several days at 900°C to give an average grain diameter of 1 to 2 mm. The penetration profiles of the tracer were established by a sectioning technique, the residual activity being counted after the removal of each section. The tracer used is Fe59 which emits two high-energy ? rays of 1.098 and 1.289 Mev, respectively; these were detected by a ? scintillation counter equipped with a pulse-height analyzer. For the measurements in the temperature range -700o to 1130°C the samples were vapor-plated with Fe59, encapsulated in quartz under vacuo, and annealed in resistance-heated furnaces which are controlled to ±1°C. The specimens diffused at higher temperatures are prepared as edge-welded couples, the two halves being separated by a thin washer of the alloy to prevent sintering. The diffusion anneal is then carried out by inductive heating under a dynamic vacuum. The temperature is monitored pyrometrically. RESULTS The diffusion coefficients are obtained from the penetration profiles in the usual way using the error-function complement relationship. The results over the entire temperature range are shown in Fig. 1. In the linear region, 900o < t > 1500°C the least mean squares (lms) values of the diffusion coefficients are given by D = 1.39 exp[-(56.5 ± 1) x 103/Rt] cm2/sec [l] The average departure of the measured diffusion coefficients from the values given by Eq. [1]In order to determine whether or not the slope is truly constant over the entire range from 900" to 1500°C, the data are arbitrarily divided into two groups, the first containing values between -900" and 1133°C and the second between -1133o and 1500°C. The lms values for the two groups are given by Eqs. [2] and [3]: D = 0.519 exp[-55.7 x 103 /RT](900° to 1133°C) cm2/sec [2] D = 1.45 exp[-56.7x103/RT] (1133° to 1500=C) cm2/sec [3] Thus, there is no significant difference between the high- and low-temperature segments of the linear region. DIAMOND drills have played an important part in the development of mines for many years. Recently. they have also entered the production field arid the use of diamond drills m the primary breaking of ores has become a big branch of the industry. The writer has estimated roughly that the total diamond drilling in Canada during 1942 was 5,625,000 feet, of which 2,250,000 feet, or 40 per cent, was for blast-holes. This accounts for 6,750,000 tons of ore broken, using the conservative factor of 3 tons per foot of hole. Many consider that the use of diamond drills for blast-holes is the most important advance in mine practice of the past decade, and the industry owes a great deal to the staff of Noranda Mines, Limited, for the pioneering they have done in the development of long-hole mining methods and for publishing their results. A great many mines have followed Noranda&apos;s lead. At the Waite-Amulet, Aldermac, Flin Flon, Canadian Malartic, Hoyle, and Matachewan Consolidated mines, most of the ore is broken by long-hole blasting. While the mines were developing new methods, the diamond-drill industry was developing mechanically-set bits and better machines. Through the effective use o smaller, cheaper diamonds, as well as more efficient setting, bit costs per foot are only one-half what they were ten years ago. Few people realize that a diamond bit is relatively inexpensive. The common EXT coring bit, for example, contains some 200 small diamonds, weighing altogether about 2.70 carats which, at $3.40 per carat, cost $9.20. After use, the equivalent of about 100 of these diamonds may be recovered. Therefore the true cost of the bit is only $7.00, made up of $4.60, the cost of the diamonds lost, $2.00 for setting, and $0.40 tax. The trend in machines has been toward specialization for the different classes of rock in blast-hole work. Light, high-speed machines have been developed for soft ores and higher powered machines for hard ores.

The theory of gravitation is based on Newton&apos;s law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A = KMRm2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth&apos;s gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical discussions and calculations,in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C:. C:. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. Gravity and Level Surfaces Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm. /sec.2) and less commonly lrierely as centimeter-gram-second units (c. g. s). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, perpendicular to the earth&apos;s surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as (&apos;the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth&apos;s surface it comrrlonly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

Many contributors have added to the fund of knowledge in the basic sciences related to mineral dressing during the past year. During 1964, the French edition of the Proceedings of the VIth International Mineral Processing Congress together with discussions was printed. Also, complete Preprints of papers delivered at the VIIth IMPC were published in September1. Over a third of the papers presented at VIIth IMPC dealt with fundamentals. COMMINUTION It has been postulated by Ponceleta that flaws need not exist before a stress is applied but rather the flaws are created at the tip of a propagating crack at a stress well below the theoretical breaking stress.

The change in electrical resistance and Rockwell hardness (16-100-B) of copper alloys containing Ni2Si and Co2Si was determined by annealing the quenched solid solutions at various temperatures for various lengths of time. The rate of precipitation of Nisi, as measured by the rate of decrease of electrical resistance and increase of hardness, increased with annealing temperature up to a certain point, depending on the percentage of Ni2Si present. At these temperatures discontinuities in the rate: change occurred. Similar discontinuities in the Co2Si alloys were no The solubility of Co2Si in copper was found to be 5 per cent at 970" DISCUSSION (Robert F. Mehl presiding) R. I?. Mehl, Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion).—The electrical conductivity and hardness curves reported in this paper are interesting, particularly because many of the anomalies of the precipitation processes are evident from such curves. The title of the paper, however, is deceptive, for it implies that measurements of electrical conductivity and hardness are suitable to determine the rate of precipitation. Neither of these methods is suitable for a quantitative measurement of rates of reaction or of precipitation in the solid state. Electrical conductivity in some alloys shows an anomalous increase during the first stages of aging at low temperatures; it is notably sensitive to strain and to state of subdivision. I have plotted the conductivity curve representing the decomposition of the phase at 555" C. in the copper-aluminum system, given in the paper by Smith and Lindlief (Fig. 47, p. 93) as a rate of reaction curve, and compared it with the curve determined by area evaluation (Fig. 7); these two curves are not coincident. Hardness is likewise very uncertain, for it is so much dependent upon particle size. Of the various methods proposed for the study of rates of reaction and precipitation, the evaluation of volume of reaction product from the respective area of matrix and reaction product on the photomicrograph is the most trustworthy; suffering, perhaps, only from low sensitivity during the early stages. Ore breakage characterization plays an essential role in the design and optimization of comminution circuits. Recently, the JKMRC comminution research team has developed a Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT). The JKRBT uses a rotor-stator impacting system, in which particles gain a con-trolled kinetic energy and are impacted against the stator, causing particle breakage. The first unit of industrialised JKRBT was installed at the Anglo Research in South Africa in March 2007, and five more JKRBTs are currently being fabricated for some of the world?s major mining companies. In addition to the JKRBT, an improved breakage model has been developed at the JKMRC, which more accurately describes the effect of specific energy, particle size and incremental breakage caused by repetitive impacts. The validation outcomes show that the JKRBT, together with the new breakage model, generate statistically similar breakage parameters to the traditional drop weight tester (DWT), but with significant advantages over its predecessor. The limitations of the DWT, specifically its lack of precision of the energy input, the lengthy time required to run individual tests and the challenges en-countered in testing small particles, have all been overcome by the JKRBT. The recent developments in the JKRBT and the new breakage model offer several prospective applications. These developments have the potential to revolutionize the ore breakage characterization in the years to come.

Removal of fluoride and chloride by alkaline washing from direct lead smelting dust which originated from an Ausmelt furnace is reported. The results show that the fluoride removal efficiency increases with an increase of alkaline concentration, alkaline washing temperature and time. The L/S ratio has little effect on fluoride and chloride removal efficiency. A new flow sheet for removal of fluoride and chloride from the dust was successfully proposed according to the results. Fluoride and chloride removal efficiencies are more than 53.68% and 63.18% respectively using the flow sheet under the optimum parameters of temperature 338 K, L/S ratio 3:1 and alkaline washing time of 1.5 h. The contents of fluoride and chloride in the alkaline washing residues can meet the standard of zinc purity as hydrometallurgical materials for zinc processing.

Recent re-classification of crystalline silica as a potential human carcinogen has resulted in a new limit of 0.1% free silica in bulk powdered minerals. Detection of silica at this level can be expected to severely challenge or exceed the capabilities of existing protocols for x-ray diffraction, the traditional method for free silica determination. Automated SEH-EOS analysis provides an attractive alternative method, with direct analysis of individual particles for the determination of the concentration of free silica, and a direct measurement of silica particle sizes. This paper will discuss automated SEH analytical procedures, sample preparation, and statistical considerations.

The Victorville cement plant of the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. is located about 1 mile from the city of Victorville, Calif. Two transcontinental railway systems, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and the Southern Pacific Railroad, afford shipped facilities. The plant is modern and well kept, as the officials, especially the higher operating officials, take pride in the appearance of the place. Dust has been practically eliminated by the installation of dust collectors and wet grinding. The plant has a rated capacity of 5,000 barrels of cement daily.
