Vanadium is an important metal that is used mainly in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys due to the high tensile strength, hardness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. Vanadium consumption in the steel industry represents about 85% of the vanadium-bearing products produced worldwide. The primary sources of the metal are patronite, roscoelite, and mottramite. Vanadium has also been produced as a by-product of the uranium production program which uses carnotite ores as a source of uranium. Vanadiferous magnetite iron ores are used for producing vanadium as well. In addition, it is known that vanadium can be recovered from the ashes of crude oil and petroleum coke. The process for treating boiler residues, fly ash and petroleum coke is similar to the process used to treat spent catalysts and ores. However, some of these materials may contain high carbon that must be removed at specific stage of the operation. Several processes are available for obtaining vanadium from fly ash, such as roasting vanadium bearing materials in the presence of sodium salt. The salt roasted calcine is subsequently leached with an alkaline or acidic solution. To obtain a cal-cine from which the vanadium can subsequently be recovered, the carbon in the source materials has to be eliminated prior to the roasting process. Other processes use the conventional hydrometallurgical route, in which fly ash is leached with sulphuric acid to obtain an impure vanadium pentoxide. The impure vanadium pentoxide is then treated with a sodium carbonate solution under atmospheric conditions to subsequently precipitate vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Actually, the salt roasting process is the only process used commercially. In the present study, the progress in the technology of vanadium extraction from secondary materials is reviewed. The perspectives and the challenges for new process development are discussed.

A laboratory study was carried out on the treatment of sulphidic copper concentrates in aqueous chloride systems under elevated temperatures and oxygen overpressure. Exploratory tests showed that chalcopyriteoxidizes with various chloride salts to form, depending upon the pH of the system, soluble copper chloride or insoluble copper oxychloride salts; the copper can then readily be recovered from the solution or residues respectively. During the leaching, iron was oxidized to iron oxide and remained in the leach residue while the bulk of the sulphide sulphur was oxidized to the elemental form with a minor portion oxidized further to sulphate. The presence of metal chloride salts in the system increased the oxidation rates of chalcopyrite and depressed the solubilization of iron in the system. A systematic oxidation leach study carried out in (1) ammonium chloride and (2) sodium chloride systems showed that the former system required little or no HC1 addition while the latter required 2 mol of HC1 per mol of dissolved copper (plus zinc). The copper was recovered from the cuprous or cupric chloride leach solutions by cementation with iron. Extractions of 99% copper and zinc, 97% silver, and negligible iron were obtained. Sulphur was oxidized to the elemental or sulphate form; the relative proportions of the total sulphur were 60 and 30% for system (1) and 80 and 10% for system (2). A flowsheet for a conceptual process with minimal reagent requirements was proposed.

"There seems to be some confusion between the terms carbon black and lamp black, although in American lampblack is generally understood to be a soot formed by the smudge process. In this process oil, coal tar, resin or some solid, or carbonaceous substance is burned in an insufficient quantity of air, while on the other hand carbon black is a product resulting from the incomplete combustion of gas and is deposited by actual contact of flame upon a metallic surface.The various carbons, such as gas retort coke, oil retort coke, graphite, carbon black, lampblack, vine black, wood-pulp,black, willow charcoal, and blacks made from refuse material such as leather have different characteristics as to flocculence strength of color, and physical structure. These blacks are made by one of the following methods:(1) Formation by direct contact of a flame upon a depositing surface.(2) Production by combustion of an oil, tar, etc., in an inadequate supply of air; the soot is allowed to slowly settle out on the floors and the walls of the collecting chambers.(3) Carbonization of solids and subsequent reduction to a state of small subdivision.(4) Production by heating carbonaceous vapors or gases to a decomposition temperature by external heating with or without air in the forming chamber. This is usually referred to as cracking or thermal decomposition."

Petioles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world's foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Petioles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process, particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit and its effective removal of impurities such as arsenic, antimony, indium, selenium and tellurium, is reviewed.

O aço inoxidável ferrítico tipo 430 estabilizado com Nb, com e sem recozimento após laminação a quente, foi laminado a frio e submetido a recozimentos isotérmicos em temperaturas de 650ºC, 700ºC, 750ºC e 800°C por 900 s para análise da evolução da textura de recristalização e do tamanho do grão via técnica de EBSD. Ocorreu o refino do grão após recristalização, resultando em um tamanho final de 12,2 mm. Observou-se um aumento da intensidade das componentes (111)[12 1] e (111)[01 1] da fibra g e diminuição na intensidade da fibra a de deformação. A componente cubo girado, característica do aço laminado a quente, desaparece com a recristalização. As propriedades mecânicas desse aço, principalmente o comportamento em estampagem profunda, são diretamente afetadas por sua textura de recristalização.

Outotec has developed an operator training simulator (OTS) platformsuitable for various hydrometallurgical processes. The complete solution is run in the cloud, where virtual client instances can be managed on-demand. The aim is to build a generalizable model that produces coherent results even when operating outside of ideal parameters, allowing the operator to train in unsteady state conditions such as start-up and shutdown. Complex software products are commonly associated with significant development time and cost. Utilizing modular software architecture, only the control system and processmodel are tailored for theOTS,whereas modules such as user administration and cloud-based client machine spawning can be imported, shortening development time. A generic acidic pressure oxidation process (POX) operator training simulation consisting of feed preparation, autoclave, dual-stage flash evaporation and off-gas scrubbing is described. Process is simulated using Outotec HSC Sim 9 process simulator and controlled by Siemens Simatic PCS7 control system.

"The ""rate-of-preduotion curve"" described in the revised Treasury Manual* was devised by the author in May, 1920, and since that time has been use by the oil and gas valuation section of the Treasury Department in determining the rate of production of wells for purposes of taxation. This curve is most useful for estimating the future production of a well, or group of wells, of known daily settled production, where future-production curves and tables based on yearly production records are available. It also provides a means for determining the past year's production of a well of known daily settled production, or conversely, the estimated production on any day for a well of known yearly production.The rate-of-production curve is auxiliary to the production decline curve and is derived from it in estimating the future production of a tract, a production decline curve formed from the records of the tract itself should be used. If such records are not available, and there is no information which leads to the belief that the average production decline of the wells in this tract differs from the average for the pool or district, an average curve for the pool or district may be used.The accompanying chart illustrates a typical rate-of-production curve, with the yearly production decline curve from which it is derived. The production decline curve shown is for an average well in the Augusta district, Butler County, Kansas, and has been constructed from the tables given on page 128 of the revised Treasury Manual.The ordinate (vertical scale on the chart) of any point on a yearly production decline curve represents the production of the well during the year previous to the date shown by the abscissa (horizontal scale). For example, the chart shows that an average well, which produced 100,000 barrels of oil in 1915. produced 92,000 barrels in the year previous to January 19, 1916, produced 53,300 barrels in the year previous to June 1, 1916; produced 49,000 barrels in the year previous to July 1, 1916, 27,000 barrels in 1916, and 10,000 barrels in 1917."

This paper and slide presentation is a brief rundown on what is probably the worst natural devastation I have ever witnessed. The epicenter of the quake that so violently shook Mexico City occurred 230 miles away near Mexico's west coast. The first calculation placed the quake at 7.8 on the Richter scale. This was later upgraded to 8.1. Each unit increase on the Richter scale indicates about a 30 fold increase in energy released. The quake was felt in much of Mexico and south Texas and damage occurred in many other Mexican cities. On the morning of September 19, 1985, at 7:18 A.M., the ground went into motion and shook for approximately 2 to 4 minutes. During this period most of the devastation occurred. At 7:38 P.M. the following day, the second quake hit and more buildings fell from this 7.5 quake. The ground in Mexico City moves like jello since it is a dry lake bed 7,350 feet above sea level.\

Mechanical properties of the eutectic between CoAl and cobalt were measured over a range of- temnperatures and strain rates for a variety of microstructures produced by directional solidification and by thermo-mechanical processing. Directional solidification led to rodlike, lamellar, and irregular microstructures. The unusually high volume fraction of the cobalt-rich rods and the lurge spacing of the rods were explained by the phase diagram. The hot-worked structure consisted of fibers of COAL in a cobalt-rich matrix. The roonl- tevlperature strength of the uvrought material increased with decreasing grain size but the 1000°C strength decreased with decreasing pain size. At high temperatures the directionally solidified tnaterial was stronger and less strain-rate-sensitice than the hot-rolled material. The fine-grained hot-worked ma-terial became superplastic at high temperatures, with tensile elongations greater than 850 pct, while at root temperature this material was ductile and impact-resistant because of the ductile matrix. Fracture occurred in the directionally solidified material at elevated temperatures by inter phase separation and at roorn temperature by cracks in the intermetallic phase. Growth of these cracks was impeded by the ductile cobalt-rich phase. It was found that the CoAl intermetallic remains ordered at elevated temperatures. DIRECTIONAL solidification of eutectic alloys has been used to produce structures consisting of parallel rods or lamellae. Although the spacing of the phases depends on the growth rate, it has been observed to be of the order of 1 µ in many eutectics. A strong intermetallic phase has been used to reinforce a ductile matrix in the rod eutectic A1-Al3Ni and the lamellar eutectic Al-Al2cu.1 The microstructure of the eutectics A1-A13Ni and A1-A12Cu remained aligned after samples of these alloys were exposed to temperatures just below their melting points for long times. Stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures makes directionally solidified eutectics a candidate for high-temperature applications. Recently Thompson4 has developed the Ni-NiMo eutectic containing 40 pct NiMo lamellae, giving a tensile strength superior to nickel-base superalloys. Unfortunately, this eutectic oxidizes rapidly at elevated temperatures. By mechanically processing a two-phase structure, one may reach strengths as high as 700,000 psi, as demonstrated by drawn pearlite.5 In this case the strengthening mechanism was thought to be related to the fine substructure formed during deformation.5 However, a heavily worked structure may recrystallize and coarsen at elevated temperatures. Some worked eutectics such as Al-Al2Cu,6 Pb-Sn,7 and Sn-Bi7 have shown unusually large elongations in tension when tested at elevated temperatures. This phenomenon of large extension, called "superplasticity", was related to the fine grain size of wrought two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures. A mode of deformation of "superplastic" material has been shown to be grain boundary sliding,' which has also been observed during creep of polycrystalline materials.9 The Co-A1 system was chosen for this investigation after examining the phase diagrams of binary eutectics." The high melting point of 1400°C, the aluminum content which was expected to give oxidation resistance, and the properties of the intermetallic CoAl were the chief factors influencing this choice. This eutectic consists of a mixture of the intermetallic CoAl and a cobalt-rich solid solution. The intermetallic CoAl has a large range of solubility and a CsCl structure." From the similarity between CoAl and NiAl one would expect CoAl to be ordered at elevated temperatures; however, specific heat measurements" show a transition at 800°C. West-brookL2 has measured the hot hardness of CoAl and found a rapid decrease in hardness above 600°C. The tensile properties and stress rupture properties of as-cast CoAl-Co eutectic were measured by Ashbrook and wallace13 who report a room-temperature tensile elongation of less than 1 pct. I) EXPERIMENTAL A) Sample Preparation. Experimental materials were prepared by directional solidification, by hot working, and by powder processing. The starting materials were electrolytic 99.9 pct pure cobalt and 99.99 pct pure aluminum. 1) Directional Solidification. A vertical Bridgman apparatus heated by induction was used to directionally solidify cylindrical ingots $ in. in diam and 5 in. long. The apparatus was first evacuated and then an argon atmosphere was introduced to retard evaporation. The ingots were contained in an alumina crucible inside a graphite susceptor that rested on a movable water-cooled base. The base was lowered out of the induction coil at a constant rate. Eight of the ingots were solidified using a drive rate of 2.5 cm per hr, two of the ingots at 1.2 cm per hr, and one ingot at 10 cm per hr. The eutectic composition Co 10 wt pct A1 was used in all but one ingot which had the composition of the stoichiometric CoAl intermetallic, Co 32 wt pct Al. 2) Mechanical Processing. At 1000°C the eutectic Co 10 wt pct A1 is a mixture of an intermetallic phase, Co 21 wt pct Al, and a cobalt-rich phase, Co 5 wt pct Al.10 These phases differ from the stoichiometric CO 32 wt pct A1 and pure cobalt because of the large solubility of this eutectic at elevated temperatures." The fundamental properties of dielectric separation were studied to provide insight into the design and operating characteristics of a dielectric separator. Force equations on mineral particles were derived and evaluated experimentally. Responses to variations in the electrical voltage and frequency, feed rate, particle size, dielectric fluid, and dielectric constant were tested theoretically and experimentally, using a 5-cm-diam dielectric separator. High-dielectric mineral recovery was proportional to the calculated effective dielectric force volume (EDFV) that surrounded each drum-electrode wire. Electrode spacing was the most sensitive design parameter; spacing of less than 0.4 cm was required for a good separation. Dielectric separation was effective for separating minerals with dielectric constants that differed by approximately 2 or more.

A deterministic model to assess the hydrologic impact of small watersheds subjected to unsteady storm events is presented. The overland flow model is based on the kinematic wave approximation coupled with a Green-Ampt infiltration equation. The Green-Ampt infiltration parameters are estimated using the USDA-ARS parameter estimation technique which is based on soil moisture-tension data. A Galerkin finite element formulation of the kinematic wave approximation is presented for the deterministic analysis of overland flow on small watersheds. The finite element formulation includes linear, quadratic and cubic Lagrangian one-dimensional spatial elements. A linear time variation is assumed which includes both explicit and implicit time marching algorithms, depending on the choice of the time weighting parameter. The implicit time algorithms result in a system of nonlinear equations which are evaluated using a modified Newton-Raphson iteration scheme. Initial solution estimates are generated using a linear finite difference procedure. The coupled infiltration overland flow model is tested using storm data for impervious surfaces, a laboratory soil flume, and two natural, USDA-ARS experimental watersheds.

More or less unconsciously and from sheer force of habit human beings do many things they probably would not do if the possible consequences of their acts were fully recognized and appreciated. Such carelessness ordinarily could be condoned if human life were not at stake, but it is difficult to understand why intelligent men engaged in the hazardous occupation of mining indulge with the utmost indifference in some habit or continue some custom in violation of State leas and company regulations and under circumstances that may jeopardize not only their own lives but those of scores, even of hundreds, of their fellow workers as well. The old adage that stolen sweets are the best may or nay not have some foundation, but when applied to the practice of smoking surreptitiously in a coal mine, more especially a gassy mine, it is without even remote justification. Although a relatively harmless habit in the proper environment, smoking has been the cause or suspected cause of many gas explosions and black-powder ignitions and has resulted in numerous instances of bodily injury, loss of life, and destruction of property. Likewise, many fires in both coal and metal nines, causing loss of life, have been started by smoking.

"One of the major environmental impacts of mining is the destruction of habitat. The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an iconic Australian marsupial that has been severely affected by land clearing and its decline is continuing. This has placed pressure upon mining companies and government agencies to ensure koalas are managed throughout the life-of-mines - from land clearing through to rehabilitation of post-mining landscapes. This paper reports on the æKoala VentureÆ research partnership between The University of Queensland and Rio Tinto. As part of the Koala Venture program we examined koala use of two types of restored environments: rehabilitated mined land (20 sites) natural regrowth forests (six sites), at Blair Athol Coal Mine in Central Queensland, Australia. Searches for koala scats revealed evidence of koalas in ten per cent of rehabilitated sites (2/20) and 33 per cent of natural regrowth sites (2/6). Two factors were identified as being of greatest importance in facilitating koala recolonisation of restored habitats. Firstly, all recolonised sites were located close to native forest occupied by koalas (mean 135 m ¦ 52). Proximity to source animals is considered crucial to recolonisation of suitably restored habitats. Secondly, three of the four recolonised sites were dominated by koala food trees, most of which were large enough to be utilised by koalas. Availability of suitably abundant food resources is, therefore, also considered crucial. The requirement for these two factors, in combination, is highlighted by the absence of koalas at several sites that contained abundant food trees, but that were distal to areas with source animals, and vice-versa.Our research demonstrates the enormous potential for restoration of wildlife habitat on post-mining lands, even for species with specific requirements such as the koala. "I HAVE BEEN looking forward to addressing this particular audience about Trans-Canada Pipe Lines because you men, more than most, understand the problems of the pioneer. Trans-Canada Pipe Lines qualifies as a pioneer on two counts: it is certainly pioneering a completely new industry in Canada -the long-distance transmission of natural gas -and it has at least a few of the problems that are expected and normal to any pioneering venture.This morning, I’m going to try to give you a sketchy picture of our project and a brief report on its current status and our progress to date; and then a broad picture of Canadian markets for natural gas.The physical characteristics of the Trans-Canada Pipe Lines project have been discussed so often that I am not going to take the time today to quote a lot of statistics on pipe sizes, miles, tons of steel, etc. Suffice it to say that this project, estimated to cost approximately $350,000,000, will be the longest large-diameter gas pipe-line ever built anywhere.Let me try to paint a broad picture of this great national project, using only a few basic 'round' figures.First, it involves exploration for and development of the natural gas fields in Alberta and other provinces -the cost of which will run into hundreds of millions of dollars.Then comes the gathering, stripping, and cleaning of the gas before it can be delivered to Trans-Canada. This will cost close to $100 million.Next we have the Trans-Canada Pipe Lines project for transmission of the gas to Eastern markets -estimated to cost $350,000,000 during the first three to four years and making natural gas economically available to one-half the population of Canada."

The current method employed to quantify the efficiency of separation of ferromagnetic ores by wet low intensity magnetic drum separators (WLIMS) incorporates the use of a conventional benchscale Davis Tube (DT) operating at a magnetic field intensity that is equivalent to that of the drum’s surface. However, empirical research has indicated that the magnetic force, or force index, rather than the magnetic field intensity, is the critical factor in the operation of the magnetic separator (Murariu and Svoboda, 2002). Furthermore, the current aforementioned practice would yield incorrect information as the magnetic field gradients produced by a typical WLIMS unit differs considerably from that of a bench-scale DT. In light of this, research on magnetite focusing primarily on the scale-up of DT results to pilotscale WLIMS were undertaken. The investigation entailed a comparative study between that of a typical WLIMS circuit and a bench-scale DT. The purpose was to practically evaluate the performance of a WLIMS, bench-marked against the traditional laboratory-scale DT unit. Moreover, the secondary objective was to produce a magnetite concentrate graded at 69% Fe, 95% -45μm, as a suitable source of separation media for use in the Dense Medium Separation (DMS) industry. Fundamental findings of previous works provided a framework for the study, however, a realworld approach was explored. Preliminary testwork conducted at Mintek investigated the performance of a DT and a typical multi-stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit (operating at 1000 Gauss at the surface). The results attained indicated that a DT operating at high intensities is comparable to a single rougher WLIMS stage. Additionally, it was observed that the three stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit performed similarly to the DT operating at 1000 Gauss. Moreover, piloting testwork was undertaken, carried out in larger 380mm drums, and the results attained showed a strong correlation with laboratory-scale findings. A influência do tempo entre passes na evolução microestrutural de dois aços austeníticos, F138 (sem nióbio) e ISO 5832-9 (com nióbio), foi investigada através ensaios de torção a quente em condições industriais. Análises foram realizadas através de microscopia ótica e eletrônica de transmissão, EBSD e microdureza. Menores tempos entre passes produziram menores tamanhos de grãos e de precipitados. Microestruturas mais refinadas induziram a maiores microdurezas. O aço ISO 5832-9 apresentou maior resistência que o F138. Precipitações de TiNbN, após o encharque, e de NbCrN e NbN (5%), durante o processamento, foram observadas no aço ISO 5832-9. Ambos os materiais sofrem recristalização dinâmica, partículas grosseiras (> 200 nm) atuaram como partículas de reforço e partículas menores (< 50 nm) no ancoramento dos contornos de grãos e discordâncias no ISO.

To develop new or improved flotation methods for beneficiating low-grade red iron ores, the Bureau made many bench scale and continuous anionic flotation tests on ferruginous sandstones and calcareous iron ores from the north-eastern part of the Birmingham, Ala., iron district. The ores contained about 21 to 36 percent iron, a to 11 percent lime, and 22 to 64 percent silica. Production of iron concentrates containing 48 to 52 percent iron was technically feasible in batch tests, and the iron recoveries ranged from 85 to 92 percent. In continuous tests 49 to 51 percent iron products were obtained with 80 to 90 percent recovery.

The response of minerals in magnetic separators is in accordance to dynamic rather than static magnetic susceptibility values . The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . Tests on 16 minerals and solids have demonstrated that both of these factors affect different minerals in different ways .

In ,1993, the WMC Resources Ltd.-owned Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, underwent a capacity upgrade. This capacity increase was offset by .air quality control restrictions limiting the smelter&apos;s availability to 80%. As the direct. result of this limitation, WMC Resources Ltd commissioned a double absorption contact ,acid ,plant for the desulphurisation of furnace waste gas in August 1996. The history and the impact of the acid plant on S02 emissions and air quality is reviewed. General descriptions of the other aspects of the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter&apos;s Environmental Project are also included in the paper. Information on &apos;the design features? and operating practices that relate to or contrast with practices at operations visited by KNS personnel prior to acid plant commissioning provide the paper&apos;s focus. Smelter operation has changed markedly from unstable operation prior to 1997 to continuous" operation with little down time due to mechanical or process failures resulting in increased smelter availability to more than 90%
