Owing to its flexibility, convenience, economy, ands availability, electric power is peculiarly adapted to the needs of the coal -mining industry. Because of such obvious advantages, the application of electricity has in recent years become more and more extensive and is now a most important factor in the Nation's coal prediction. With the introduction of this type of power into coal mines certain new, specific, and well-recognized hazards resulted. The question arises, therefore: Has the industry met these hazards squarely and. effectively? With respect to some individual companies, the answer happily is in the affirmative; with respect to the industry as a whole, there is much room for improvement.

El presente estudio señala la historiografía, geología, mineralización, tamaño, forma de estructuras y controles de la mineralización en el yacimiento minero de Antamina, Ancash. En 1850, Leonardo Pflücker fue el primer propietario y operador de Antamina. Posteriormente Vicente Lezamet trabajó en la región hasta 1914 obteniendo matas de cobre de 32%. Es a partir de 1951 que la Cerro de Pasco se interesa por el yacimiento, adquiriendo derechos de propiedad, e iniciándose el proceso de exporación hacia 1953. Con la experiencia y resultados de la primera campaña, se realizó la segunda etapa de exploración, culminándose en 1958. Los minerales más importantes son los granates verdes y marrón-rojizos seguidos de la clorita. La topografía del valle de Antamina es glaciar con valles en forma de "U" y está rodeado de lagunas de 30 hectáreas con una represa natural de roca. De otro lado, Antamina es un ejemplo de "metasomatismo de contacto", donde en los depósitos del mineral, existe un contacto entre un intrusivo y los sedimentos que lo rodean. Existen tres zonas en el área de Antamina: la zona de "Laberinto" situada al lado SE del valle, la zona lamada "Taco" al NW del valle, y "Usupallares" situada a un kilómetro al SW de " Laberinto". De las tres zonas señaladas, la primera, es la más importante puesto que allí están emplazados dos cuerpos mineralizados con leyes comerciales. El principal control de la mineralización son los agregados de cristales de granate, los que a su vez, obedecen a controles que no han sido todavía explicados con claridad. Sin embargo, los pliegues, fracturas y zonas de cizallamiento, constituyen controles importantes. Finalmente, dadas las características de este tipo de yacimiento, el proceso de exploración resulta muy costoso, requiriéndose gran número de labores para encontrar y delinear las zonas mineralizadas.

It is unlikely that improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel cost/shortages, and increasing haul distances as in the past. Therefore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this Bureau of Mines contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic, and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data were gathered from extensive literature searches, European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configurations.

"The Lone Gull discovery of Urangesellschaft Canada Limited was made in 1974 as a result of extensive exploration activities for unconformity related uranium deposits in the Baker Lake area of the Northwest Territories. The structurally controlled mineralization is hosted in Aphebian metasediments and intrusive granitic stocks located approximately 2 km south of the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic Aphebian and the Middle Proterozoic The/on Formation.The original discovery was made with a helicopter mounted radiometric system during systematic prospection over the unconformity. Diamond drilling was first carried out in 1977 and continued, with an interruption in 1981, to the present. A total of 25,500 metres and 199 holes have been drilled and outlined three ore zones. Preliminary geological reserves are estimated at some 16 million kgs. U30 8 at an average grade of approximately 0.4%.IntroductionUrangesellschaft initially entered exploration in Canada as a participant in joint ventures in 1968, and was incorporated in Canada in 1974 as Urangesellschaft Canada Limited. Subsequently, UG was among the first companies to apply exploration criteria developed from the Athabasca Basin, namely the Middle Proterozoic unconformity over Archean/ Aphebian basement, for selection of exploration targets in the geologically similar Thelon Basin.The Baker Lake area in the Keewatin District of the Northwest Territories was selected from the extensive Thelon Basin because it had the best accessibility (Fig. 1). The hamlet of Baker Lake located close to the geographical centre of Canada, is largely an Inuit settlement with a population of approximately 1,100 inhabitants. The distance from Baker Lake to the Lone Gull property is about 80 km. Baker Lake is connected to the tidewater of Hudson's Bay via Chesterfield inlet and is serviced by scheduled domestic flights several times weekly from Churchill, Manitoba, about 650 km to the south."

Money... not many subjects are as personal or as emotional. Hessiod said it well in 700 B.C. "Money is life to us wretched mortals". Are you getting paid enough? Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

INTRODUCTION. THE geology of Butte possesses especial interest on account of the magnitude of the ore deposits, their extraordinary richness and persistence in depth. Since its discovery in the early 60's the district .has yielded, in round numbers, 6,000,000,000 lb. of copper, 260,000,000 oz. of silver, 1,250,000 oz. of gold, and a large but not definitely known number of pounds of zinc. This enormous metal production has been derived from an ore tonnage estimated roughly at 65,000,000 tons. At the present day, most of the important mine shafts have reached a depth of. 2,400 ft., while several are more than 3,000 ft., deep. At these-great depths rich bodies of copper ore are being exploited, showing no diminution in metal content as compared with the ores of the higher levels. Any effectuation of a viable program of air pollution control will' require a basic understanding of the chemistry of atmospheric processes, the fate and migration of SO2, and the ultimate health effects of the sulfur oxides themselves. The migration and ultimate fate of Sop discharged into the atmosphere will be discussed with particular emphasis on the various conflicting views and how these relate to our present emission control regulations. Our present lack of knowledge is a severe detriment, and consideration will be given to those particular areas where future research may best be directed to provide the answers to a number of perplexing questions.

AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temperature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. METHODS Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. Airborne geophysics and geomatics is at a crossroads as to whether it remains a viable mapping tool, both technically and commercially, and broadens its potential for new applications (eg environmental monitoring, civil engineering and precision farming). The use of small and stable multisensor aerial platforms to conduct highly flexible surveys flown at a low/reasonable cost of operation is a recurrent wish of many stakeholders in the natural resources exploration and mining industry. Through its Fly Light Airborne Geophysics research program, EXIGE and partners have pushed the development and testing of two new airborne carriers with unique capabilities for geo-surveys: GyroLAG’s gyrocopter and Infotron’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). These carriers are the next generation of versatile and innovative aerial vehicles for remote sensing and monitoring. They are rotary, smart tailored, ultra-high resolution manned (gyrocopter) or autonomous (UAV) airborne platforms that combine the merits of dense data sampling, accurate position location, very low clearance above ground or sea level, slow speed, interchangeable and combined multiple geo-sensors, automatic data quality control and real-time quality assurance. They also have the benefits of being highly efficient, cost-effective, commercially attractive, safe, reliable and easy to deploy and operate. Their technical specifications and multiple advantages compared to traditional aircraft and/or ground crews are presented in this paper. Analytical laboratories require a qualitative or semi-qualitative method of determining major and minor constituents in "unknown" samples to select optimal analytical techniques. This is exceedingly important in precious metal assay laboratories where the precision and accuracy requirements are exacting (routinely within 0.02%, absolute basis). This paper describes the use of an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer with a specially designed software package to select optimal analytical procedures and specify relevant analytical parameters. A wavelength dispersive XRF spectrometer is capable of quick and accurate analyses of properly prepared samples without extensive standardization. When coupled with a specially designed software package, this preliminary assay system is applicable to a wide variety of sample types including gold and silver bullion, karat gold and karat PGM alloys, high silver and high copper metallic samples as well as particulate samples of ores and sweeps. The system relieves the assayer of tedious calculations for silver inquartation and proofing, minimizes human error and standardizes selections over time. Most importantly, the system allows for independent verification of final assay results.

A novel sorption-enhanced steam reforming (SESR) process of hot coke oven gas (HCOG) was proposed for tar removal and H2 amplification, and was studied with the comparison of conventional steam reforming (SCR) process. Both of the processes could remove tar effectively and improve the H2 amount in the COG obviously. For CSR process, after the temperature and the S/HCOG ratio reached 700 °C and 2.4 respectively, the H2 amplification factor kept 4.30 around, with its concentration less than 75%. However, for SESR process, the H2 amount and concentration get improved further, with the optimal temperature moving toward low temperature. At 600 °C and the S/HCOG ratio of 2.4, the H2 amplification factor and concentration could reach 4.91 and 97.55% respectively when the CaO/C ratio was 2.0. Under the respective optimal reforming conditions of the two processes, the energy consumption of the SESR process was lower than that of CSR process.

I recently gave a talk at a seminar on mine development in the Eighties. I had to present CRU' s long-range market outlook for copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum and silver. In reviewing the recent history of each metal, and our projections, I tried to find some common pattern of behavior that could prove a guide in projecting future market behavior. When you sweep aside your input-output models and econometric equations, what you seem to be left with is this: "When a market goes through a prolonged period of price weakness, you can usually look forward to a period of considerable improvement. " "When a market goes through a prolonged period of price strength, you can always anticipate a prolonged period of price weakness." Stated another way, "The better things are, the worse they will get."

Seamounts, submarine banks, volcanoes and undercurrent channels are prominent geomorphic features that have become an important target for minerals research and exploration with the goal of future exploitation. Polymetallic ferromanganese deposits are common types of mineralization on these settings. Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are important as potential resources of Mn and Co, but also Ti, Ni, Tl, REEs, PGEs, and other metals. Many seamounts and channels along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin are known to hold mineral deposits but are poorly studied. This work presents and briefly describes the most recent activities of the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) on exploration and investigation of ferromanganese deposits along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin. Different submarine areas from the northwestern margin of the Iberian Peninsula to the west off Canary Islands have been surveyed by geophysical, sampling and underwater observations from 89 to 4000 m water depth. The mineral deposits cover a large diversity of submarine geological and geomorphical features: mud volcanoes and diapirs related to hydrocarbon seeps, seamounts associated with hot spot volcanism, hydrothermal vents in active magmatic volcanoes, structural basement highs and banks or contourite channels. Considering the collected dataset, we present the preliminary results of the study of these mineral deposits, including ferromanganese nodules and crusts and phosphate pavements and nodules, which can be considered as potential sources of raw materials.

Many attempts have been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris (1950) by Cerchar. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last 25 years. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now accepted standard presentation. The float and sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve are then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the concept is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods.

As coquerias enfrentam um grande problema que é a oxidação do carvão. Este fenômeno as afeta diretamente, pois deterioram as propriedades coqueificante do material, impactando na síntese do coque metalúrgico. Portanto, gerando perda de valor econômico, uma vez que as propriedades coqueificantes são fatores que determinam a atratividade e o custo do carvão. Sendo assim, torna-se necessário o uso de medidas para retardar o efeito da oxidação, garantindo a menor perda possível, desde a extração do carvão mineral da mina, até o carregamento nos fornos de coqueificação. Neste estudo em particular, definiu-se uma equação para previsão do decaimento de fluidez, que é a principal propriedade afetada pela oxidação, e matéria volátil de carvões em pilhas a céu aberto. Foi também desenvolvido o estudo do efeito da aspersão de uma camada polimérica para minimizar os decaimentos de fluidez e matéria volátil.

En Compañía Minera Atacocha SAA, en busca de mejoras operativas y en la rentabilidad de la operación, se inició el minado por tajo abierto de las estructuras mineralizadas que se encontraban en superficie. A diferencia de otras minas a tajo abierto (explotación de yacimientos porfiríticos y epitermales de alta sulfuración), la operación que se desarrolla actualmente en Atacocha se basa en el minado de estructuras vetiformes de un yacimiento epitermal intermedio. Además, el desarrollo de esta nueva operación no buscó centrarse en la recuperación del mineral que se dejó de minar en los tajos antiguos o del relleno de alta ley que se dispuso en los mismos.

Embora a resistência ao desgaste seja geralmente a principal propriedade avaliada decorrente da adição de terceiros elementos em ligas Al-Sn, não somente os fenômenos tribológicos são responsáveis pela deterioração gradual das peças, mas também os fenômenos relacionados à corrosão. Dessa forma, o presente estudo objetiva analisar o efeito de características microestruturais formadas durante a solidificação transiente da liga Al-9%Sn-5%Zn na resistência à corrosão em solução 0,06M NaCl investigada por polarização potenciodinâmica e espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica. Foi observada uma morfologia microestrutural caracterizada por dendritas da fase α-Al com concentrações de Zn tanto na matriz dendrítica quanto em regiões ricas em Sn localizadas nos contornos interdendríticos. A evolução dos espaçamentos dendríticos primários (λ1) também foi correlacionada com parâmetros térmicos de solidificação. Finalmente, constatou-se que a amostra com microestrutura mais grosseira, ou seja, λ1 = 89,6 μm, apresentou comparativamente menor densidade de corrente de corrosão e maior resistência à polarização.

Central America is graduating this year into large scale mining with the start up of Inco's multi-million dollar nickel laterite processing plant in Guatemala. In the other extreme of the Isthmus in Panama Texas Gulf Sulphur is doing check diamond drilling and foundation test drilling at the Cerro Colorado copper porphyry. The higher price of gold and silver has spurred development and exploration of several small precious metal mines. The purpose of this presentation is to make a brief resumé of the most important mines operating in the area and a list of significant exploration projects. Also, tables will be shown to compare mining codes and taxes. Unfortunately these tables lack information on Panama. Before starting I like to express my appreciation to Kennecott Copper who permitted the use of some of the data compiled by the author on their behalf during the year 1975. Other persons which did not want to be named also have my gratitude.

The proposed Flambeau Mining Project is based on a high grade copper deposit located approximately one mile southwest of Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The project involves only the mining, crushing, and shipping of ore to facilities outside of Wisconsin for processing. The Wisconsin environmental regulations include provisions for identifying wetlands, the requirements for minimizing the disturbance of wetlands, and the need to establish new wet-lands to replace any wetlands which have to be disturbed.

The salt gradient solar pond has been the focal point of accelerating international attention and interest in recent months. Only recently have most investigators in the renewable energy field come to realize the versatility of the solar pond, and its ability to overcome certain problems usually associated with solar technologies. These realizations, together with clear demonstrations in Israel and elsewhere of its technical feasibility, have combined to bring the solar pond to the forefront of renewable energy technologies. The solar pond is a natural or site-built pond, about one to five meters or more in depth, which has been altered to retard the loss of absorbed solar energy. The absorbed solar energy is usually lost through upward buoyancy of the warmed water, followed by the loss of its heat to the atmosphere. The chief solar pond technology -the salt gradient, or "nonconvective" solar pond-prevents this upward buoyancy by means of a vertical density gradient achieved with dissolved salt. The deep waters in the solar pond reach high temperatures, up to and even above the boiling point of pure water.
