"INTRODUCTION In the manufacture, storage, transportation, and use of combustible gases and vapors, explosion hazards, which at times may be present when air becomes mixed with the gases and vapors, become of primary importance. Such conditions are especially dangerous where large volumes of gaseous atmosphere are involved, because an explosion under such circumstances is capable of doing tremendous damage to both property and personnel.Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated, and published results dealing with, the explosibility of various types of combutible atmospheres. The explosion hazards of natural gases have received attention, and results giving the limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures in air have been determined and published. 4/ Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. 5/Because of the increased demand for crude oil for war purposes, the application of secondary-recovery methods of stimulating oil production have received considerable attention during the last few years. The process consists in the injection of natural gas into partly depleted oil wells to cause the oil in the sands to flow into producing wells and so increase the amount of recoverable oil. 6/"

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. Large-opening mine ventilation is unique for the following reasons: (1) it is challenging to keep airflow velocities high enough to effectively remove or dilute airborne contaminants, (2) large air volumes can be moved through the mines with little static pressure drop, and (3) stoppings to direct ventilation airflows are costly to construct and maintain. The research results suggest that by incorporating ventilation planning into the mine planning process, using propeller fans, developing new stopping materials and construction methods, and using long pillars to eliminate crosscuts where possible, the ventilation of large-opening mines can be significantly improved. The ventilation improvements created by incorporating these various techniques into the ventilation plan will help reduce the exposure of mine workers to airborne contaminants in underground large-opening mines.

The haulage cycle is the sequence which a haulage vehicle must first arrive at the loading area, then turn around and reverse into position. Once it is loaded, the vehicle leaves and travels to the unloading area, where again it must turn around and back up to unload. The cycle is repeated over and over again. The Vector Neutral truck is a rubbertired, self-propelled hauling vehicle designed such that it eliminates the requirement to turn around and back-up to either load or unload. Vector Neutral Truck Cycle: 1.) Travel from the load station to the dump station. 2.) Stop and dump load. 3.) Travel from the dump station to the load station. 4.) Stop and load. Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a 2500 TPD gold operation employing processes including grinding, gravity, rougher flotation, leach, CIP, and E/W. An OCS(Optimizing Control System) expert control system has been implemented on rougher flotation in early 2008. The OCS system communicates with the Plant DCS(Distributed Control System) through OPC(OLE for Process Control) communication. The initial strategy was to control the flotation cell froth level set points to achieve target froth velocities. This strategy was enhanced by controlling both level and air flow setpoints. The flotation cell air and level are adjusted to reach cell pulling rates (froth velocities). The pulling rate setpoints for each cell are determined based on downstream capacity (concentrate surge tank level). The effect of pH and upstream disturbances is also taken into account in adjusting the air and level setpoints. Feed forward compensation is employed down the flotation row to minimize disturbances.

THE application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of their bold and silver is no longer a novelty, but, as an example showing modern tendencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richness of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early hays seen unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and supplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that was too low in value to ship, but which it was thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill was not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling, ideas felt in the company's next installation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from ?sliming." Driven piles are a common tool in any engineer’s toolbox for supporting large structures over very soft ground, especially in high seismic risk zones. Challenges include achieving sufficient vertical and lateral load capacities within the constraints of pile spacing and geologic conditions. This was the case for a project in Orange County, California with a state-of-the-art, $180 million plant for biosolids processing, biogas management and energy recovery located in marshland next to an existing waste water treatment plant. The new construction for the Irvine Ranch Water District included a 70-foot (21 m) tall building and three closely spaced, 90-foot (27 m) high, 65-foot (20 m) diameter, egg-shaped steel digester tanks. The lower 35-feet (11 m) of the tanks were constructed below ground level. The site was underlain by up to 45 feet (14 m) of highly compressible peat and organic clays with standard penetration test (SPT) blows as low as 2 blows/ft (30 cm). Some of the peat layers had measured in-situ dry densities of less than 30 pcf (480 kg/m3) with moisture contents of over 250 percent. The soft clays and peat were underlain by a dense layer of sand and gravel at depth. Groundwater was very shallow. While nearby sites were designated by others as seismic site class “D”, this site was clearly class “F” (SF) which required site specific seismic hazard and time history analyses. Six recorded time histories were selected from the 1994 Northridge, 1989 Loma Prieta (California) and 1999 Chi Chi (Taiwan) earthquakes for the ground motion analysis considering the magnitude of the earthquake, distance to the source, characteristics of the earthquake source (i.e. type of fault displacement), peak ground acceleration, local site geology, station type (i.e. free-field or small structure stations), and spectral content that was similar to the period range of interest. Following ASCE’s Guideline Document 7-05, a site-specific horizontal acceleration response spectra (ARS) was developed for the maximum credible earthquake (MCE) associated with the site.

The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. As the theme of the conference is ære-discover Otago' from the minerals point of view, it is also timely. Of the eight million ounces of gold recorded produced from Otago, perhaps a quarter of this came from the goldfields of St Bathans, Vinegar Hill and Cambrians. The most notable among them was the Kildare Hill Mine, which is the so-called Blue Lake at St Bathans today. The bottom wash encountered in this mine contained the famous Kildare lead, which averaged 7 1/2 dwt to the dish, and is still one of the richest leads of alluvial gold known in the world. The richness of this lead, the best encountered in these gold fields, is otherwise stated to have yielded more than 42 ounces of gold to the cubic yard. It should be borne in mind that this equates to about $22 000 per cubic metre, in todayÆs values. I have been told by older residents of this district that in fact about 1 million ounces came out of the Kildare mine and associated workings. In todayÆs values, this would be about 530 million dollars worth of gold. The largest mines in the district were at Surface Hill, Kildare Hill, Nicholsons, Vinegar Hill, the Never Fail claim at Shepherds Flat nearby, and at Cambrians. It would appear that in almost every case, work stopped when the bottom wash progressed too deep down dip of the anticline hills on which it was initially found. The mining methods were sluicing and hydraulic elevating, and although the gold bearing ground did not stop, eventually it exceeded the ability of the mining methods then available years ago, to work it further. When it is realised that the previous mining has removed what is likely to be only a low percentage of the gold resources in these fields, a tantalising situation presents itself today in that mining technology now available will enable another cut to be taken off these fields. As in the past, I believe this will be million ounce plus and multi-million dollar scenarios, where the economic and social benefits will become widespread prizes.

We have conducted a stress analysis of overcoring stress measurements undertaken at the Zedex Test Site (ZTS) in the Äspö HRL, Sweden. Two different types of overcoring cells have been used at the site: the 9-gauge Borre Probe (CSIR-type) and the 12-gauge CSIRO HI cell. Inversion programs based on the least-squares criterion were developed and calibrated. The primary and secondary stress field in the ZTS were back-calculated using strain data from individual cells as well as from combining data from both cells. We propose that the combination of strain data from the two cells significantly improves the determination of the stress field. A striking result is the good agreement between the re-analysed overcoring data and the existing hydraulic fracturing data. The deviations for the horizontal stresses between the re-analyzed overcoring data and the existing hydraulic fracturing data are approximately 3 MPa. The deviation in the orientation of maximum horizontal stress is approximately 10-20°. Nous avons analysé les résultats de mesures de contrainte par surcarottage réalisées sur le site Zedex, du laboratoire souterrain HRL d’Aspö, en suède. Deux types de cellule de mesure ont été utilisés sur ce site : la cellule à 9 jauges (du type CSIR) et la cellule à 12 jauges (du type CSIRO HI). Un programme d’inversion mettant en œuvre une norme par moindres carrés a été développé et validé. Les champs de contrainte primaires et secondaires du site Zedex ont été évalués d’une part en considérant chaque mesure isolément, d’autre part en intégrant l’ensemble des données de déformation dans une inversion unique. Nos résultats suggèrent que l‘association des diverses mesures dans une intégration unique améliore nettement la détermination du champ de contrainte. Un résultat intéressant est le bon accord entre ces nouveaux résultats et les résultats des mesures par fracturation hydraulique. Les écarts sur l’amplitude des contraintes horizontales est de l’ordre de 3 Mpa, les écarts sur les orientations de l’ordre de 10-20°. Auf dem Zedex Test Gelände im Äspö Festgesteinslabor (HRL) wurde eine Spannungsanalyse mittels Overcoring Spannungsmessungen durchgeführt. Hierzu wurden zwei verschiedene Methoden verwendet: das 9-kanal Borre Gerät (CSIR- Ausführung) und die 12-Kanal CSIRO HI Zelle. Inversionsprogramme, die auf dem “least-squares”- Kriterium basieren, wurden entwickelt und kalibriert. Das primäre und sekundäre Spannungsfeld des Zedex Test Geländes wurde sowohl aus Verformungsdaten individueller Zellen als auch aus Kombination beider Zellen ermittelt. Wir nehmen an, daß die Kombination der Messergebnisse beider Geräte die Bestimmung des Spannungsfeldes signifikant verbessert. Überzeugender Beweis hierfür ist die gute Übereinstimmung der überprüften Overcoring Daten und Ergebnisse aus existierenden Hydraulic Fracturing Versuchen. Die Abweichungen der horizontalen Spannungen aus beiden Datensätzen ist etwa 3 MPa und Abweichungen der Orientierung der größten Horizontalspannung liegen bei etwa 10-20°.

The full economic evaluation of a mining project requires a block model that provides an estimate of the tons and grades of available resources. The model must be representative of the mineralization to be found at the time of mining for specified extraction periods and within acceptable error margins. In an operating mine, there may be a reasonable understanding and estimates of actual dilution and ore loss. This paper discusses the issue from the perspective of a project at a feasibility or preproduction level of development. Three types of dilution are discussed. Internal dilution (or change of support) is function of the spatial distribution of the mineralization and its relation to the operation?s selectivity. Geologic contact dilution is the unavoidable mixture at contacts or boundaries of material with different geologic characteristics, grades, or metallurgical performance. Operational planned and unplanned dilution should also be considered, sometimes incorporated by factoring the resource model, but more accurately by mimicking the grade control process. The resource estimation process always carries uncertainty, which is sometimes significant, and usually caused by several factors. These include quantity and quality of drill hole information; quantity and quality of geologic data; grade estimation methodology; dilution and mining recovery factors applied; etc. A key decision is to whether estimate as accurately as possible the in-situ geologic resource or to estimate the tons and grade of the material to be fed to the processing plant. The geologic modeling and grade estimation methods used are conditioned by this decision.

Keywords: Magnetostriction, magnetic properties, Pd(Fe,Co,Ni) single crystals Fe-Pd, Co-Pd and Ni-Pd alloy systems show appreciable magnetostrictive strains that are of interest for sensor applications. These systems exhibit congruent melting minima. In this work the magnetic and magnetostrictive behavior of congruent melting Fe-Pd, Co-Pd, and Ni-Pd compositions have been examined. The alloys examined include Fe-54.9 at.-% Pd, Ni-45.4 at.-% Pd, and Co-45 at.-% Pd. The paper describes the growth of bulk single crystals of these alloys using Czochralski technique. X-ray diffractometer was used to obtain rocking curves that were used to determine the [001] crystal direction. Magnetostriction in [001] direction was measured using strain gages. Magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer. Ni-Pd showed the highest magnetostriction values among the congruent melting compositions. Magnetic and magnetostrictive behaviors of these alloy single crystals are presented.

Acoustic emission monitoring techniques are a powerful tool for analysing deformation behaviour and fracture characteristics of rock samples under uniaxial loading. Uniaxial compression tests were carried out on three different types of sandstone for a better understanding of acoustic emission response with respect to rock deformation and damage develop-ment. All sandstone samples revealed congruent characteristic acous-tic emission patterns which correlated directly with distinct stress-strain stages. However, the acoustic response and development within the individual stages proved to be entirely different due to variations in their microstructure.

Coal miners often handle heavy electrical power cables, weighing up to 10 kg per meter. These cables are manually lifted and attached to the mine roof to prevent damage from mobile underground equipment. Data suggest that workers who commonly perform cable handling tasks experience a high rate of lost time back injuries. In this study, six male underground miners performed a total of 12 cable-hanging tasks in standing, stooping, and kneeling postures, during which kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected. Reductions in vertical work space were found to result in a linear increase in the peak moment experienced by the lumbarspine (p<0.05). In restricted postures, peak moments were not significantly different in stooping vs. kneeling postures (p>0.05). Average lumbopelvic flexion during the tasks was highest in stooping conditions, followed by standing and kneeling exertions (p<0.05). This paper is based upon a review of studies of mostly Canadian mining companies in Chile, northern Canada, Tanzania, Guatemala, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In spite of often well-meaning efforts most mining firms produce wealth in developing areas that largely benefit those immediately involved, sometimes neighboring communities, and often those in the governing strata. Typically mining takes place in enclaves and fosters enclave development, rather than the kind of inclusive wealth development favored by the recently UN published Inclusive Wealth Report. One way by which mining operations can foster more inclusive wealth development is to adopt much broader approaches towards the construction of the various physical and social infrastructures ? roads, water, electricity, health services, schools, security ? required for their own operations by collaborating with diverse regional, provincial, and/or national agencies and businesses to develop these infrastructures for larger populations and areas beyond the immediate sites where they are operating. Established mining firms can also foster more inclusive wealth development by establishing more formal, collaborative relationships with artisanal miners.

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material&apos;s low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. Nevertheless, in very gassy coal seams, this methane released at the face can pose a problem because the shearer is a ready ignition source. Preventing methane ignitions at longwall faces requires four actions. The first is to provide better ventilation around the shearer to eliminate the ventilation eddy zones at the drums where methane builds up. These eddy zones are eliminated by mounting additional water sprays on the shearer to direct air into them. The second action to prevent methane ignitions is to install a water spray behind each cutter bit and regularly replace worn bits. Water sprays behind each cutter bit act to quench the hot metal streak that follows a worn bit when it strikes rock. The third is to ensure that no ventilation eddy zones are inadvertently created by poor placement of water sprays. The fourth is to ensure that the methane monitor on the shearer is in the best location to detect methane accumulations. ADDRESSING METHANE ACCUMULATIONS AT LONGWALL FACES3 Cecala et al. [1985a, 1989] and Denk and Wirth [1991] studied methane emission and ventilation patterns at longwall faces to find where methane accumulations are most likely. Although not always the case, the major source of methane at longwall faces is usually the breakage of coal by the shearer. Stress-related fracturing of the coal seam at the face, called bumps or bounces, can cause the release of additional gas (Figure 4–1).
