También se muestra los avances sobre procesamiento de minerales con alto contenido de pirrotita. En ese sentido, se busca desarrollar una tecnología eficiente y ambientalmente limpia, considerada como una herramienta para la mejora de la competitividad de la empresa, a partir de una visión de desarrollo sostenible.

COALTECH 2020 initiated a research project to provide the coal mining industry with a modelling tool to determine the expected types of subsidence, risks and the investment required in post-closure funds to cater for subsidence associated with bord and pillar mines. A detailed literature review was conducted to determine the most important parameters in calculating the cost associated with surface subsidence. A subsidence prediction model was developed to determine the likelihood of different types of subsidence. The study made use of current knowledge of failure mechanisms and its aim is to assist the industry and government in arriving at the most suitable arrangements when authorities require financial instruments to assure compliance with environmental regulations.

This paper describes the back analysis of the Pavoncelli tunnel, an hydraulic tunnel which was excavated between 1904 and 1915 in South of Italy and experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake. A numerical simulation which is intended to study the behaviour of the tunnel during this seismic event is presented, also accounting for the swelling phenomenon that took place during and after construction.

Humankind's interest in measurement of human physical strength probably dates to the first humans. At that time, life was truly a struggle in which the fittest survived. To a great extent, fittest meant strongest. Interestingly, current interest in human physical strength in the workplace stems from 1970-1980s vintage research demonstrating that persons with adequate physical strength are less likely to be injured on physically demanding jobs. Survival in many modem workplaces may still be a case of survival of the strongest. There is, however, a flip side to this issue - that persons with limited strength are more likely to be injured on "hard" jobs. To address this problem, we can apply what we know about physical strength to job design. "Hard" jobs can be redesigned to be within the physical strength capability of most people. Since physical strength is important to these jobs, we must find ways to quantify it through testing. This publication concerns human physical strength testing. Its purpose is not to recommend any particular type of testing, but rather to describe the types of testing available and their uses. It is up to each individual user of strength testing to decide which testing technique is most appropriate for his or her particular application. This booklet discusses four types of strength testing: isometric, isoinertial, psychophysical, and isokinetic. Human Strength Before describing the different types of strength measurement, we must define the term "strength" and explain the concept of strength measurement. Strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with voluntary muscle contraction. Maximum strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a maximum voluntary muscle contraction.(1,2) These definitions include some key words that must be explained. A voluntary muscle contraction is "voluntary." When a person's physical strength is measured, only the effort the person willingly puts forth at the time is measured. Thus, when we test a person's "maximum strength," we are not measuring his or her actual maximum, but some lesser value representing what he or she is comfortable expressing at the time with the existing equipment and environmental conditions. Interestingly, when researchers startled persons being tested (e.g., by setting off a starter's pistol behind them), they have found significant increases in measured strength.(3) It has been hypothesized that the lower strength displayed during normal testing provides a margin of safety against overloading and damaging muscle tissue. The test equipment and the tested person's familiarity with the process also influence the "voluntary" strength output. The interface between the tested person and the test equipment is particularly important. A poorly designed interface induces localized tissue pressures that vary from uncomfortable to painful. In this situation, testers are measuring voluntary discomfort tolerance - not strength. It is important for strength researchers to keep the "voluntary" nature of their data in mind when they are designing their equipment and protocols.

The Golden Cross Mine is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 8 km northwest of Waihi. The project is operated as a Joint Venture with Coeur Gold New Zealand holding 800/0 and Viking Mining Limited with a 20% interest. The past open-pit and underground gold and silver producer has been in the reclamation phase of the operation for approximately 2.5 years and is now nearing completion. Although rehabilitation of the site is a regulatory requirement, the Closure Plan has been enhanced by the ongoing commitment of the Joint Venture to establish a sustainable land use for the site by commissioning engineered facilities designed to last for perpetuity. The Joint Venture identified six significant design features that were key to successful rehabilitation. These were the controlled placement of acid generating waste rock into engineered disposal sites; the design and placement of sealing layers over the waste rock disposal sites; the design and construction of diversion drains; the establishment and management of vegetation to protect the oxygen diffusion layer; a partial capping of the tailings to accelerate consolidation adjacent to the tailings dam embankment, and the implementation of a cyanide recovery circuit to recycle cyanide from the tailings prior to disposal. Another key to success for the project involved genuine consultation with all parties participating in the planning, evaluation, and consenting of the closure process at Golden Cross. The local and regulatory community has been widely represented in the Joint Venture's operating and closure plans throughout the history of the mine. Participants include: Regional and District Councillors and staff members, professional peer reviewers, environmental groups, local residents of the valley, and Iwi. This overall commitment to the project has resulted in a world-class rehabilitation program for the first modern metal-mine closure in New Zealand and we believe that collectively, the work done at Golden Cross is helping to set a standard for the success of future programs within the extractive industry.

The Porcupine Joint Venture operates the Dome Mine in South Porcupine, Ontario. Dome underground began production in 1910. It is the longest continuous operating gold mine in Canada, producing in excess of 15 M ounces. More than 900 underground stopes have been mined and hundreds of miles of drifts, sublevels and raises developed. Underground mining methods included shrinkage, cut and fill and longhole. Not all stopes were backfilled upon completion, particularly the longhole stopes. The Dome open pit was designed above the underground mine workings such that, as the pit is excavated, it intersects underground drifts and stopes. Potential operational problems associated with the interactions between the stopes and the pit walls may occur, necessitating pit wall redesign, ground support installation and operational rescheduling. Each intersection of the pit with the underground mine workings is closely evaluated to maintain a safe working environment and wall stability. This paper discussed how risks to pit wall stability are assessed, mitigated and monitored.

The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

Underground mining accidents in the USA in recent times have prompted the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to review emergency and tracking systems for underground mines. Several communication and tracking systems are available on the market and various systems have been installed in mines around the world. In addition, MSHA?s standard on Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) requires mines to comply with the final PEL of 160µg/m3 by May 20, 2008. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc., Underground Division, has been in operation since 1995 and an extensive control and monitoring network, and a leaky feeder voice network is in place. Enhancements to the communication and control system are currently being implemented to include a PED emergency notification system, wireless LAN with tracking of personnel and equipment in the mine, and a ventilation control system that will use the tracking information and ventilation data to automate much of the mine ventilation system. Expected benefits from such a system would be enhanced communication with miners, emergency notification, location of miners and equipment, energy savings, improved ventilation control, and improved atmospheric conditions in the mine including reduction of diesel particulate matter (DPM).

Traditional methods of project procurement of have remained virtually unchanged in the U.S. infrastructure construction industry for more than 50 years. The traditional method, Design-Bid-Build (DBB), uses a two-step process that separates planning and design from construction. Design is generally done by the public agency and their consultants and the subsequent construction contract is procured from the private sector, almost always by a “low-bid” approach. This method has worked well for many projects, delivering quality work for the lowest bid price. This is particularly true for those projects where the work, and the public agency’s management procedures, are well understood by the contracting community and there is relatively low uncertainty in the work or conditions, particularly geotechnical conditions for underground construction. However, concerns exist with the DBB process. It is time consuming because all planning and design work must be completed prior to beginning any construction work and it is of concern for complex or large projects, plus those with significant risk, where the separation of design and construction, in conjunction with pressures resulting from the low-bid environment, often result in substantial cost and schedule increases. Frequently, these increases occur in a non-productive, inefficient, adversarial work environment leading to claims, disputes and costly litigation (Quick 2002).

The Asia and the Pacific region has large mineral resources of antimony, barite, bauxite, bismuth, copper, fluorspar, gold, graphite, iron ore, magnesite, mica, rare earths, salt, talc and pyrophyllite, titanium, zinc, and zirconium. The region overall lacks large resources of oil and natural gas, but it has large resources of anthracite and bituminous coal. In terms of exploitation, many minerals, metals, and fuel are produced in significant quantities in the Asia and the Pacific region as shown in table 1. Collectively, the area accounts for a substantial amount of the world production of antimony, barite, bauxite, fluorspar, gold, graphite, ilmenite and rutile, iodine, iron ore, lead, magnesite, manganese, nickel, salt, tin, tungsten, and zinc. Total coal production of the region exceeds 1.6 billion metric tons. The production of bituminous coal accounts for more than 80 % of the total output. China is the region's largest coal producer, with an output of almost 1.1 billion tons. Other major producers are Australia and India. The combined production by Australia, China, and India is more than 1.5 billion tons or 93 % of the area's output. The remainder of the coal output in the region comes from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, the Korean peninsula, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The production of crude oil throughout the Asia and Pacific region is close to 2.4 billion barrels. China and Indonesia together account for 67 % of the total output. The remainder of the output is primarily from Australia, Brunei, India, and Malaysia. Indonesia is the largest producer of natural gas in the region with an output of close to 58 billion cubic meters, followed by Malaysia and Australia with 23 and 22 billion cubic meters, respectively. Other producers in the region of lesser stature by output include Brunei, China, India, and Pakistan.

Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

Dr R. E. Robinson, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.sc. (Chem. Eng.) cum laude from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1950 and a Ph.D. (Eng.) from the same University in 1953, where he was awarded the Haikes Memorial Medal for Industrial Chemistry. Professor G. G. Garrett was appointed Professor of Physical and :Fabrication Metallurgy in the Department of Metallurgy at the University of the Witwatersrand in June 1980, and in January 1984 he became Head of the Department. Mr P. A. van Wielligh, Pr. Eng., climbed the mining ladder in the hard way, starting as a Mine Surveyor in 1936 and working his way up as Chief Surveyor, Underground Manager, Mine Manager, and Consulting Engineer, to Executive Director, including the intermediate steps. Mr H. E. James, Pr. Eng., is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. Both his B.sc. degree (1961) and his M.sc. degree (1964) were obtained on bursaries, the former from Gold Fields of South Africa and the latter from the Atomic Energy Board. Mr G. Pienaar, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.Eng. (Met) in 1967 and an M.Eng. in 1973, both from the University of Pretoria. Dr A. K. Haines, Pr. Eng., obtained all his degrees from the University of Natal, finishing with a. Ph.D. in 1971. Mr B. C. Alberts, Pr. Eng., obtained his academic training at the University of Pretoria, where he was awarded B.sc. degrees in both agricultural engineering (1963) and mining engineering (1965). Mr H. C. van Zyl, Pr. Eng., holds B.sc. degrees in mining engineering (1968) and civil engineering (1972), both from the University of Pretoria.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. During the past 30 years, the research arena has changed significantly in all fields, mining included. The relative representation of the topics of research, how the research is performed and who has performed the research have all changed. Although there are a lot of subjective ideas and anecdotal "analyses" concerning these changes, there has been no actual study of these trends to verify the facts. This study was divided into six five-¬year periods for the purposes of comparison. Some of the trends analyzed are co-authorship, research areas, research sponsors and cooperative efforts. In today&apos;s research arena, 30 years is a long time. Technology has advanced more rapidly than in any time previously and that pace continues to increase. There are more researchers, more tools for research and an increasing number of companies, agencies and institutions engaged in research. The pace of change and its impact is often discussed and debated at professional meetings and in institutions that engage in research. These conversations will often influence the research decisions of the participants in directions to take or subjects to pursue.

In Eastern Kentucky, the Darby seam has had an extensive history of coal bumps and pillar bursts. The combination of high overburden, strong rock and coal, subjacent and superjacent mines, and retreat mining has produced incidences of violent pillar failure. The influence of these factors on pillar stability and the potential to bump is illustrated in two case histories. In the first case history, a bump occurred unexpectedly during the retreat mining of a five heading continuous haulage panel. Alternative cut sequences and pillar dimensions were analyzed to identify a geometry that would reduce the potential for future coal bumps or bounces during retreat mining. The viability of the alternatives was constrained by the reach of the continuous haulage system, the overburden depth, and the presence of thick sandstones in the main roof. Each alternative was numerically modeled cut-by-cut to examine the mechanism of stress transfer, as a pillar row is retreat mined. This approach highlighted which cuts were being made in highly stressed portions of a pillar and therefore more prone to coal outbursts. Validation of the numerical modeling was accomplished by comparing the cuts where bumps and outbursts had occurred underground to the highly stressed cuts shown within the models. Recommendations of the barrier pillar width between adjacent panels, pillar dimensions, and changes in the retreat mining sequence were proposed based upon the overburden thickness, geology, and the result of the numerical modeling. The second case history documents a nine-entry panel 3,600-feet long that was retreat mined a distance of 2,064-feet without a significant roof fall or roof-floor convergence. Mine management became concerned about the potential for a coal bump or a large roof collapse within the gob and the resulting air blast. The stress on the pillar line and within the remnant pillars in the gob was quantified through numerical modeling. Changes in mining practices on the current panel were implemented to avoid a bump in the active panel. A barrier was established between the current and the future panels to protect the future panel against abutment pressures from the void area. A change in pillar centers was proposed in the adjacent panel to absorb the side abutment pressure from the gob of the active panel.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Joy Mfg. Co. shuttle car. These instructions are based upon actual installations made in the mine on two shuttle cars, model 21SC-2E. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other shuttle cars with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions hexein would he applicable to the other shuttle cars and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.
