Gold was determined directly in eight different mill cyanide solutions, by atomic absorption spectroscopy in an acetylene-air flame. Some of the mill solutions were diluted with water to bring them into the most sensitive absorption region (5-50 p.p.m. Au) whereas those solutions with very low gold content «2 p.p.m.) were concentrated by evaporation.Calcium was complexed with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to avoid the undesirable effect of a precipitate on atomization.When added to standard gold solutions, EDTA had no effect on absorption, nor did any of the impurities common in mill cyanide solutions.Known amounts of gold, ranging from 2 to 30 p.p.m., were added to mill solution'aliquots and recovered to within 100 ± 2·5 per cent. A method for the selection of the most suitable corrosion inhibitor for a particular system is given. The method involves the evaluation of surface passivity by means of copper ion displacement after the metal surface has been subjected to the corrosive atmosphere. The application of the method to the selection of suitable inhibitors for use in producing wells is described. Correlation with recognized laboratory tests has beet1 found to be good within the limitations of the test. The use of the test to evaluate inhibitor persistencc is described. INTRODUCTION Corrosion as it is associated with the industry shows wide variations in its qualitative as well as its quantitative aspects. This complicates the work of the corrosion engineer. In the past few years the efforts of the corrosion engineer have been further taxed by the large numbers of products being marketed as corrosion inhibitors by various manufacturers. These products are submitted to him together with a limited amount of data to support their use as inhibitors. The data are usually authentic and reliable yet all too often when these products are applied to an actual corrosive system the results are disappointing due to the ineffectiveness of the inhibitor and the corrosive system. The corrosion engineer must select a comparatively limited number of inhibitors for field trial from the large number available. The selection is usually made on the basis of a standardized laboratory test such as that adopted by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers or by field experience in an area; however, testing of this type is discouraging on large numbers of compounds, particularly in view of the specificity of environment. It has been an object of this work to devise a method which will allow the corrosion engineer to select the best inhibitor for a specific environment under field conditions. The test would of necessity be rapid and inexpensive. It would preferably eliminate the need for expensive and delicate instruments. STATEMENT OF THEORY The test as developed makes use of the fact that metal ions will be displaced from solution by metals having a more positive electrode potential. Thus, if an active iron surface is exposed to a solution of a copper salt, free copper will plate spontaneously on the iron surface as it is displaced from the salt solution by iron ions. If the iron surface is passified, as by coating with an insulating-type organic corrosion inhibitor, it is no longer capable of displacing the copper ions due to its own limited ionization. The result will be a change in the amount of copper plated upon exposure to a neutral copper salt solution. In practice it has been found possible to measure the magnitude of the alteration of the cell potential by determining the copper deposited on a standard iron surface under controlled conditions. This means that, as the film builds up, the resulting shift in the electrode potential tends to cause the iron surface to act more like a noble metal, resulting in a reduction in the cell potential to a point that copper will no longer plate spontaneously. Obviously, the salts of other metals such as silver, gold or platinum might be used for this operation; however, copper was selected because of the color difference of the plate, the comparatively low cost of copper salts and the ease of evaluation of the plated copper. Furthermore, its high cell potential provides a substantial driving energy. The determination of the copper is readily done colorimetrically by dissolving it in 5 per cent ammonium hydroxide solution containing 2 per cent potassium per-sulfate. The blue color of the copper ammonic complex ion so developed may be compared with standards prepared by dissolving known quantities of copper powder in the same reagent. In routine screening it is seldom desirable to determine the amount of copper plated. It is usually more important to determine the concentration of inhibitor required to prevent the plating of copper.

In March 1990, Heritage Mining conducted a 2000 line km high resolution aeromagnetic survey of all its prospects in the Coromandel Peninsula. One of the areas covered was the Onemana Peninsula, situated about 5 km north of Whangamata. Details of location and geology are given by Robson and Stevens (this volume).   The detailed helicopter-borne magnetic and radiometric survey over the Onemana area consisted of 163 line kmÆs of flying, and was carried out in order to assist in the definition of hydrothermal alteration and pre- or post- mineralisation structures. The line spacing chosen was 100 m, flown east-west, with a mean sensor terrain clearance of 80 m. Tie lines were flown north-south every kilometre for levelling purposes. The sensor was a Geoinstruments G-813 proton precession magnetometer in a towed bird, with data recorded using a Geoinstruments G-2000 acquisition system.   The Onemana alteration system is at the northern end of a major north-north east trending structural corridor defined by regional aeromagnetic surveys performed by AMOCO in 1980 (Rabone, 1991). T his structure hosts a number of other extinct hydrothermal systems including Karangahake and Golden Cross. In the Onemana contour plot the predominant north-northeast structures form the boundaries of a large area of subdued magnetism in the southern part of the surveyed area that is caused by intense hydrothermal alteration. This area is about 3.5 km long by 1 km or more wide and contains outcropping sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, as described in Robson and Stevens. A number of other structures transect this alteration zone, with strike directions ranging from northwest to north. A northwest feature notably truncates the zone to the south, while the northern end seems to be simi1arly bounded; however as data coverage ends at the coast, this feature is less conclusive.    Two distinctive types of strongly magnetic rock were discernible the contoured data. The strong negative magnetic anomalies the north and west are caused by fresh negatively magnetised rhyolites. This was confirmed by ground follow-up work that showed the rocks to be fresh biotite rhyolites with high magnetic susceptibilities.

"Exploration results over three overburden drilling anomalies defined by the Ontario Geological Survey in 1981 in the Kirkland Lake area, Ontario are presented. The anomalies come from lowland areas where overburden is thickest. By mapping the bedrock and surficial geology, by prospecting, humus sampling and shallow till sampling over the surrounding upland surfaces, one can initially evaluate such overburden drill anomalies without costly reverse circulation drilling. The drilling should follow, if necessary, only after surficial base data has been obtained. Preliminary work on these three properties has defined the presence of at least two styles of gold mineralization. One occurs in silicified zones in intermediate volcanics closely associated with northwesterly trending faults and shear zones. The second occurs in quartz-carbonate alternation zones in volcanics intruded by quartz-feldspar porphyry dykes. IntroductionThe three examples presented in this paper present first-hand information on an approach to the follow up of several geochemical anomalies that were found by the Ontario Geological Survey when they carried out reverse circulation overburden drilling as part of the Kirkland Lake Initiative Program (KLIP) in 1980 (Routledge et al., 1981). The initial approach is relatively simple, systematic, and cost and technically effective. It readies the properties for further exploration, or conversely, it could downgrade the properties as viable gold targets."

Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...

This report describes dredging and processing of sand and gravel from a glacial-fluvial deposit in the Raccoon River valley near West Des Moines, Iowa. Preliminary cleaning and separation of the sand and gravel at the dredge site with subsequent transportation to separate plants and the production and disposal of the various grades of aggregate material are also described. The geology of the deposit is summarized. A tabulated summary of costs in units of labor, power, and supplies is included.

Elemental carbon (EC) is currently used as a surrogate for diesel particulate matter (DPM) in underground mines since it can be accurately measured at low concentrations and diesels are the only source of submicrometer EC in underground mines. A disadvantage of using EC as a surrogate for DPM is that the fraction of EC in DPM is a function of various engine parameters and fuel formulations, etc. In order to evaluate how EC predicts DPM in the underground mining atmosphere, measurements of total carbon (TC; representing over 80% of the DPM) and EC were taken away from potential interferences in four underground metal/non-metal mines during actual production. In a controlled atmosphere, DPM mass, TC, and EC measurements were also collected while several different types of vehicles simulated production with and without different types of control technologies. When diesel particulate filters (DPFs) were not used, both studies showed that EC could be used to predict DPM mass or TC. The variability of the data started to increase at TC concentrations below 230, µg/m3 and was high (>+20%) at TC concentrations below 160 µg/m3, probably due to the problem with sampling organic carbon (OC) at these concentrations. It was also discovered that when certain DPFs were used, the relationship between DPM and EC changed at lower DPM concentrations.

THE micrography and macrography of aluminum and its alloys present certain difficulties. Many of the difficulties attendant on the micrography have been removed by methods developed during the past few years, notably those of E. H. Dix, Jr.1 The development of grain size in aluminum and its alloys may be equally troublesome, yet comparatively little detailed attention appears to have been given to it. Satisfactory reagents. are available for the development of such structures in ferrous and most non-ferrous metals, but those applied to aluminum and its alloys, i. e., alcoholic or aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide or hydrofluoric acid are not entirely satisfactory. Hanson and Archbutt,2 in speaking of these two reagents, state that "These two reagents give fairly satisfactory results, but they sometimes produce badly tarnished surfaces from which the surface deposit is difficult to remove." It has been our experience that neither of these reagents is to be entirely relied on for developing structures suitable for study or photography. This means that when the etch fails to produce satisfactory results the, specimen must be repolished, through the 000-paper at least, and then etched with another reagent. This procedure entails a con¬siderable loss of time, and the final results may not be all that might be desired. However, the reagent to be described, although not a panacea for all etching troubles, has improved results so markedly that it is felt that it is worth offering as a grain-size etch generally applicable to aluminum and aluminum alloys. Czochralski3 in 1915 mentioned the application of a solution of 10 to 20 c. c. concentrated hydrofluoric acid in 100 c.c. absolute alcohol, etching in this reagent being followed by dipping in concentrated hydrochloric-acid solution.

Based on field observations and physical modeling of simulated materials, the dynamic equilibrium principle on the whole interaction process between the surrounding rocks and support of large deformation roadways in coal mines has been developed. It explains the methods of forming the bolted strata and its changing load capacity with deformation. It also points out the factors and conditions for forming the bolted strata as follows: (1) many entries in coal mines are subject to large deformation. During their service life, it goes through the following process, elastic > plastic > fiacture > broken > loosening, etc. During this dynamic process, the mechanisms of supporting structure are changing and therefore the interaction between support and rocks experiences a process of dynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, the required supporting force for stabilizing the surrounding rocks shows overall decreasing trend; (2) the bolted strata is a special supporting structure consisting of bolt, rock skin protection devices and rock strata within the bolted horizon. As deformation increases, the supporting structure of the broken strata within the bolted horizon experiences a process of periodic change, from equilibrium > not equilibrium > equilibrium. Corresponding to this change, the supporting capacity of the bolted strata also fluctuates and gradually decreases; (3) under the bolted strata, the stability of a large deformation roadway is dynamic and step-wise; and (4) the formation of bolted strata, especially bolted broken strata depends on the existence of compressive force. Supporting the bolted strata is not constrained by the quality of the surrounding rocks. It has broad range of application.

Airblast overpressure levels can commonly be increased by up to 20 decibels (dBL) by the effects of meteorology, due to inversions and wind shear. Existing atmospheric refraction models can provide a good evaluation of the effects of meteorology, but have been limited in the accuracy of their outputs by the accuracy of the meteorological data that is available for input. This paper uses case histories from open-pit coal mine blasting in the Hunter Valley area of Australia to provide examples of increases in airblast due to inversions, wind shear, and a combination of both. It gives details of our experience of the accuracy with which predictions and assessments can be made using meteorological data of various levels of accuracy, and on the design buffer that is required to prevent the exceedence of airblast limits. The accuracy of meteorological prediction and assessment will shortly be improved by the use of sounding equipment that gives continuous measurements of temperature and wind velocity at significant levels above the ground. The paper also gives details of an industry funded research project that aims to permit the effective use of this data at distances many kilometres (km) (miles) from the location of the sounding equipment, and to develop a short term predictive model that will permit the amount of meteorological reinforcement that will occur at firing time to be determined before a decision is made to tie up a shot.

The profile of a delta formed by fine-grained mineral processing wastes, disposed of as aqueous slurries by subaerial deposition from a pipeline, has a significant bearing on the volume that is available for waste and water storage in a given containment structure. Earlier field data and laboratory experiments suggested that mine waste delta profiles could be predicted with high levels of accuracy using data from small-scale laboratory deposition tests. The relationships between the profiles of full-size and laboratory-model deltas were analysed using the principles of kinematic similarity and a recent theory of delta formation based on engineering hydraulics. Measured profiles of full-size and model coal-mine tailings deltas are compared and the prediction of full-size profiles discussed. It is shown that the data-derived laboratory-model deltas are insufficient to allow accurate prediction of full-size delta profiles. Initial slope data or other, equivalent data for the full-size delta are also required

Principal component analysis of the variation of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cr in a control group of 96 samples of surface ironstone from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, was used to derive a simple graphical method, based on only Cu, Ni, and Cr, for discriminating between massive nickel gossans and other ironstones.When the graph was tested by plotting 400 control samples, it failed to correctly classify only nine out of 176 gossans and 11 out of 224 other ironstones.

This report describes the development, design, fabrication and testing of a port-able, battery-operated, light scattering monitor (henceforth to be designated as ILSDM) for the rapid measurement of the concentration of respirable dust in mining environments. This instrument incorporates state-of-the-art design characteristics and makes use of advanced solid-state components both for light emission as well as for its detection. The use of a pulsed light source combined with synchronous signal detection minimizes drift problems and optimizes the sensitivity of the measurement. Simplicity of operation, reliability and ruggedness, light weight as well as improved performance were salient objectives of this instrument development program. Continuous clean-air flow screening of all critical optical surfaces, and optimized optical detection and electronic signal processing design resulted in about a hundred-fold decrease of noise and drift with respect to precursor instruments. Equivalent mass concentration measurements 88 low as 10 micrograms per cubic meter can be routinely performed with time constants of about 2 second.

Longwall minim; is a highly mechanized, high productivity mining method that is finding increasing applications in coal. Although the method would be highly advantageous in certain hard rock mining applications it cannot be applied in hard rock because no suitable cutterhead exists for such materials. The wedge longwall cutterhead is a, roller cutter device that is wedge-shaped, with cutters arranged to eliminate the very large normal force ordinarily required to cause such cutters to penetrate hard rock. However, the wedge geometry cannot be extended to a point: special nose cutters are needed to open a narrow slot for the wedge. This report describes the design, fabrication, and successful field testing of these critical nose cutters.

Pile driving started October 29, 1993 and was completed on January 27, 1994. Field work included driving piling from ground surface at one site and at or near proposed footing elevations for the remainder. Piles were driven to specified tip elevations or the elevations directed by the Project Manager. In an attempt to address what installation technique(s) performed the best, several methods were used, including varied predrilled depths, open ended piles, closed ended piles, and the use of both impact and vibratory hammers. Piles were driven closed ended where possible to study the feasibility of this option to reduce construction costs associated with pile cleanout. Piles were driven to different depths to measure capacity variations. The 24-inch (610 mm) diameter piling were driven in one piece while the 42-inch (1.07 m) diameter piling was driven in two segments. A total of 79 piles were driven for the four sites, 74 of the 24-inch (610 mm) diameter and 5 of the 42-inch (1.07 m) diameter. Various hammers were used to determine which hammers provided viable solutions to the potential problems anticipated in the design phase. Hammer selection was based on the driveability studies. Equipment included a 175 ton (1.56 MN) crane, support crane for pile stabilization, crane mounted auger drill, offshore leads, Delmag D30-32, D46-32, and D62-22 diesel hammers, an HPSI 2005 single acting hydraulic hammer, a Foster IHC S-90 double acting hydraulic hammer and a Kencho VM2-25000AII vibratory hammer with the weights set to produce 17,500 pound-inch (1.98 kN-m) of eccentric moment.

This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. A discussion of the preproduction development and construction activities and some of the critical technical challenges overcome during this time frame are addressed, as well as the cave initiation process undertaken in late 2015 and the ramp-up of production and progression of caving.CITATION:Casten, T, Priatna, A and Rumbino, H, 2016. The backfilling of underground stopes is a common practice throughout the mining industry. The stresses imposed by the backfill on the surrounding rock mass need to be assessed because of their influence on ground stability and on the hydro-geochemical response of the fill material. There is, however, a complex interaction between the relatively soft backfill and the much stiffer adjacent rock mass. In recent years, the authors have presented results from investigations conducted on stress distributions (obtained numerically and analytically) in and around backfilled stopes with (sub)vertical walls. In this paper, the influence of stope inclination and of backfill properties is evaluated. Results indicate that, in general, the vertical and horizontal stresses in inclined stopes are close to, but somewhat smaller than the stresses in vertical stopes. Nonetheless, significant differences can be observed in some cases, especially for the vertical stress along the inclined central line and along the hanging wall. It is further shown that neglecting deformability in limit equilibrium analyses is an acceptable assumption. However, Poisson?s ratio and the dilatancy angle, usually neglected in limit equilibrium analyses, may have significant effect on the stress distribution. Results also confirm that the backfill strength parameters (cohesion and friction angle) are critical factors required to properly evaluate the stress distribution, at least within a certain range of parameter values.

"The dry grinding and leaching circuits of Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs.Crushing is a two stage process using gyratory and cone crusher. Ore is stockpiled and then reclaimed to two parallel dry grinding mills. The double rotator dry grinding mills include a drying chamber, coarse and fine compartments and utilize a gearless motor drive (GMD) or “wrap-around”. In-circuit product transfer is accomplished with air slides and bucket elevators. Finished product separation is performed by both static and dynamic classifiers with the final product captured in baghouses. Recycle of unfinished product utilizes cascade chutes.The final ground product reports to two 2000 ton roaster feed silos. The two-stage oxygen flu-solids roasters with their associated gas train are the subject of a separate paper.The cyanide leach circuit is a standard carbon in leach system with circular swept screens for interstage carbon retention. The loaded carbon is sent to the existing Goldstrike autoclave plant for stripping and regeneration. Tails, after cyanide destruction, are deposited in the existing tailings dam with tails from the autoclave facility.Throughout the circuit, Clean Plant Design criteria were used to assure environmental compliance, ambiental acceptability and ensure worker health and safety. The commissioning and operation of the double rotator grinding technology has been very successful at Barrick Goldstrike."

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. (fig. 1) Run-of-mine ore is pelletized along with some -1"" concentrate that has been processed in the concentrator (a summer operation only), which utilizes gravity separation to upgrade a mechanical mixture of ore and waste."
