With the passing of Dr William Bleloch on 20th June 1991, we lost not only a colleague and a good friend but a man who made a very significant contribution to the industrial development of South Africa. He can rightly be called the father of the ekctrochemical and electro-metallurgical industries in this country, since his ideas and dedicated work were directly responsible for the development of these large industries as we know them today.

"Abstract Large scale In Situ Barrier Wall Construction projects, specifically those related to earth dams, dikes, and levees, frequently require stringent quality control measures to ensure the success of the wall. This presentation discusses the applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to capture information from multiple data streams and provide geotechnical feedback, quality control, and project control feedback. Techniques used to geospatially analyze verticality data from secant piles and panels will be demonstrated. Examples will be presented from barrier wall installations at two sites owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE): the Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky, and Center Hill Dam in Tennessee.IntroductionDeep foundation installations require contractors to collect a substantial amount of information over the course of a project, both for internal quality control of construction progress and for demonstrating compliance with customer or owner specifications. Methods of collecting information are constantly improving, bringing with it the need for a systemic approach to managing the increasing amounts and types of data. Handling these diverse types of data presents challenges with both budget and schedule demands. This paper discusses some techniques for adding or increasing quality control in barrier wall constructions by consolidating, visualizing and analyzing data using relational database and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, collectively referred to as Information Management System (IMS) development. The IMS concept is designed to facilitate the collection, transfer and processing of data and provide an easy way to remotely access and visualize construction progress.The remainder of this paper presents the needs and objectives of an IMS applied to quality control in barrier wall construction, the components and data flows involved, the capabilities and user interfaces of the systems and the benefits for the end users. Examples are presented throughout from case study projects including: a pile barrier wall applied in the rehabilitation at the Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky (under contract to the Treviicos-Soletanche Joint Venture), and a secant pile barrier wall currently under construction in the rehabilitation of the Center Hill Dam in Tennessee (under contract to Bauer Foundations Corporation) (both owned by the Nashville District of the USACE)."

This paper attempts to close the gap between extensive rock testing with field measurements and the mine operator's need for safe mine layouts and alternatives. It was found that many of the variables that influence mine geometry and worker safety are relatively unimportant while others are critical. The development of empirical relationships which tie the critical variables to the "safe useful life" of a trona mine layout and observations made in 140 production areas where the variables were researched over a fifteen year period are discussed. The concepts presented may have applicability in mine design for other bedded deposits.

"A method of sampling and presenting bubbles for imaging for use in full-size flotation cells is described. The device (bubble viewer) comprises a tube attached to a sealed glass viewing chamber. The assembly is first filled with frother-containing water (to prevent coalescence) and the tube immersed at the desired location below the froth. For a few minutes bubbles are collected in the viewer free from slurry and are readily imaged. To reduce bubble overlap and the problem of defining the plane of view, the viewing chamber has a sloped side. Bubbles rise, encounter this slope, spread into a single plane and slide up. This simple expedient virtually eliminates overlap and provides an unambiguous focus plane - the underside of the sloped glass. The bubble image is captured and processed to give size data. The bubble viewer has been employed at several concentrators on different types of flotation cells. Examples of the images are given. The impact of position in the cell and the effect of changing gas rate on bubble size are illustrated. This technique provides a sensitive measure of the effects of process variables on bubble size.INTRODUCTIONDespite the extensive use of flotation in the mineral processing industry, the methodology employed for cell design is largely based on empirical rules rather than on first principles. One of the main reasons for this state of affairs is that the local flow structures encountered in industrial-scale machines are very complex. These flow structures are difficult to simulate under the controlled conditions of the laboratory and the difficulty to solve the mathematical models that treat the randomness of such flows also mean theoretical treatment is limited. Understanding flotation cell hydrodynamics requires reliable data, which involves the implementation of measurement techniques capable of performing both at the laboratory- and the industrial-scale, In addition, it is desirable that such techniques are amenable to automation to reduce extensive manual intervention in the data collection process."

The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950°C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. Because of the larger pore sizes in the iron layers, ordinary molecular gaseous diffusion must be the principal transport mechanism. The usual experimental methods used for establishing the validity of chemical rate ~ontrol are incapable of differentiating between the mixed control- mechanism and exclusive chemical control.Some implications of mixed control kinetics are developed, including a predicted independence of rate on reducing gas pressure at higher pressures.INTRODUCTIONAn extensive literature review of the reduction of iron oxides has been compiled recently by Themelis and Gauvin (1962). From the large number of papers published and the widely divergent opinions of workers in this field, it appears that a simple unified quantitative analysis of reduction kinetics is not possible. "By compiling geological, structural, geophysical, and geochemical information into a 3D geological model, we evaluated the orogenic gold potential in the vicinity of a hidden segment of an important Archean fault zone, the Cadillac-Larder Lake fault (CLLF) in the region of Rouyn-Noranda. The segment of CLLF in the present study is partly covered by Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. Because more than 2000 t Au have been extracted along the CLLF to date, our objective is to evaluate the gold potential at depth along a poorly known segment of this fault. A 3D geological model (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) including the covered segment was built through the compilation and homogenization of available geological data and the construction of 23 cross sections. The geology under the Proterozoic cover was evaluated using geophysical inversions, drill holes (42 in total), and surrounding geology. All available assays were filtered and upscaled to a 250 m × 250 m × 250 m regular cell grid to determine and quantify spatial relationships between geological features and mineralized occurrences using the weights of evidence method. Structural features, such as E-W-trending faults and fault intersections, and certain lithologies with a high primary porosity such as volcanoclastic rocks of the Blake River Group and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks, proved to be very prospective, yielding favourable factors with a weight of evidence index W+ > 0.24. These salient features were then assigned a combination index for ultimately evaluating the orogenic gold potential under the sedimentary cover. The zones resulting in an optimization of exploration targeting were attributed the highest probability, representing ~1% of the initial volume. La compilation des données géologiques, géophysiques, structurales, et géochimiques et leur intégration au sein d’un modèle géologique 3D a permis d’évaluer le potentiel aurifère dans les environs d’une importante zone de faille archéenne sous couverture protérozoïque. Cette méthodologie a été développée en utilisant le cas de la Faille Cadillac-Larder Lake (FCLL) dans la région de Rouyn-Noranda. Puisque plus de 2000 t d’Or ont été extrait à proximité de la FCLL, l’objectifs des travaux est l’évaluation du potentiel aurifère en profondeur de ce segment. Un modèle géologique 3D (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) incluant le segment sous couverture de la FCLL a été construit en utilisant l’ensemble des données géologiques disponibles et 23 coupes géologiques. La géologie du socle archéen sous la couverture protérozoïque a été interprétée avec des inversions géophysiques, des forages (42 au total) et les contacts géologiques exposés. Les teneurs aurifères dans le secteur ont été filtrées et ajusté à une grille régulière de 250 m × 250 m × 250 m afin d’évaluer et de quantifier les relations spatiales existantes entre certaines entités géologiques et les emplacements minéralisés en utilisant la méthode du poids de la preuve. Les failles de direction Est-Ouest, les intersections de failles ainsi que certaines lithologies possédant une porosité primaire importantes comme les certains tuf du Groupe de Blake River et les sédiments du Timiskaming se sont montrés très prospectifs avec des valeurs de W+ > 0.24. Ces entités géologiques ont ensuite été utilisées par le biais d’un indice de combinaison pour évaluer le potentiel en or de type orogénique sous le couvert sédimentaire. Cette méthodologie permet une optimisation des campagnes d’exploration puisque les zones pour lesquelles la probabilité de minéralisations a été évaluée à la plus haute valeur représentent 1% du volume initial."

As mining progresses in the West, the depth of material has increased, making highwall stability a major factor in safety and production. The Jim Bridger Coal Mine’has made highwall stability a priority, concentrating on safety as well as increasing and improving production. Overburden depths are increasing dramatically; the geological environment consists of medium to sot? material, faulting, water, and current pit alignment not favorable to joint planes. Angle drilling the presplit at 20 degrees became necessaryas vertical presplit drilling produced wall failures.

Concentrating Line 6 just went down again. The control room operator checks the graphic display. Only one piece of equipment shows an alarm. Clicking on the ball mill icon, he discovers the culprit was the low flow lube switch. The flow looks okay now, but it is the third time this week the switch has stopped the line. Maintenance is called, the switch replaced and the line is up running again. Sending the right person to the right spot immediately can save hundreds of hours of downtime every year. This paper discusses the principles behind implementing smart First-Out Fault Detection to dramatically reduce equipment downtime in new, or existing control system architectures. Methodologies are presented to maximize the system benefits, while minimizing development costs. Case histories are presented for a number of successful implementations in mineral processing plants.

The ConRoast process for the production of platinum group metals involves the use of a fluidized bed reactor for the removal of sulphur from ore concentrates by roasting prior to smelting in a DC-arc furnace. Test work was carried out in 2007 at Hazen Research in Golden, Colorado to provide the data necessary for a commercial roaster to be designed by Technip. This paper discusses the rationale behind the test work, the goals for calcine composition to be used as smelting furnace feed, the results of various roaster operating parameters in terms of calcine composition (particularly residual sulphur and the fate of trace elements), and the impact of the results in terms of a commercial roaster design.

For the construction of tunnels and other underground structures, extraction of the exact amount of material is of paramount importance both economically and for engineering purposes. In the Sequential Support Method (NATM) immediate (sequential)and smooth support by means of shotcrete, steel arches, lattice girders and rockbolts, either singly or in combination are used; cutting of the precise (albeit sometimes of complex geometry) profile is an integral part of the method. In order to save unnecessary excavation and provide better information to the machine operator, VMT GmbH has developed a system to support precise excavation of the tunnel profile when using road headers or other partial face cutting machines. This paper outlines the principles of this system with examples from Australia, Ger-many, Sweden and Spain and will cite examples of typical savings achieved.

Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

The history of soft and hard rock underground mining is blemished with regional instabilities of mine workings. Whilst the potential consequences of regional instability events are recognised to be high, there is a false perception that the probability of them occurring is very low. In fact, Australia has averaged more than one event per year for the past 20 years. At least five fatalities and over $100 million of losses have been associated with the events. As such, they are a core risk to underground mining and have a significant effect on the quadruple bottom line of business û safety, environment, community acceptance and economics. This paper explores the important roles that risk management has in reducing the probability and consequences of regional instabilities. It concludes that education and continuing professional development are essential elements for effectively managing the risk.

The minerals industry consumes billions of dollars in raw materials, equipment, tools, services and chemicals. The industry, though, has turned overmuch of the research and development (R&D) for these products to manufacturers and suppliers. Now the industry and its suppliers must decide how much R&D the mining industry should be responsible for and what role the suppliers should play. Promoting R&D As a result of the current environment in the mining and minerals industry, there has been a substantial decrease in R&D. Depressed prices, stagnant growth, cost cutting and rationalization are evident.

Compositional data constitutes a special class of quantitative measurements involving parts of a whole. The sample space has an algebraic-geometric structure different from that of real-valued data. A subcomposition is a subset of all possible parts. When compositional data values include geographical locations, they are also regionalized variables. In the Earth sciences, geochemical analyses are a common form of regionalized compositional data. Ordinarily, there are measurements only at data locations. Geostatistics has proven to be the standard for spatial estimation of regionalized variables but, in general, the compositional character of the geochemical data has been ignored. This paper presents in detail an application of cokriging for the modelling of compositional data using a method that is consistent with the compositional character of the data. The uncertainty is evaluated by a Monte Carlo procedure. The method is illustrated for the contents of arsenic and iron in groundwaters in Bangladesh, which have the peculiarity of being measured in milligrams per litre, units for which the sum of all parts does not add to a constant. Practical results include maps of estimates of the geochemical elements in the original concentration units, as well as measures of uncertainty, such as the probability that the concentration may exceed a given threshold. Results indicate that probabilities of exceedance in previous studies of the same data are too low.

Hydraulic support instability (HSI) is one of the most common causes of disasters in underground coal mining, posing a threat to the safety of mine workers and normal operation of the equipment. It is prone to occur in fully-mechanized mining faces with a large mining height (FMMLMH), especially when the dip angle of the coal seam is large. The key to controlling HSI is to deduce its mechanism and employ effective control techniques. This paper focuses on the analysis of HSI types, the key parameters and techniques to control HSI in FMMLMH, the establishment of a model of HSI in FMMLMH, and a multi-parameter sensitivity mechanical model of different HSI forms in the no. 7219 longwall face in Xutuan Coal Mine, Huaibei Mining Group, by using sensitivity analysis . The results show that HSI mainly presents in three forms: hydraulic support gliding (HSG), hydraulic support tilting (HST), and hydraulic support tail twisting (HSTT). The occurrence of the above three forms depends mainly on support anti-instability capability. In the no. 7219 longwall face, HSG and HST are the main two forms of HSI. The dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between floor and hydraulic support are the sensitive parameters for HSG, while HST is strongly dependent on the dip angle of the working face and the friction coefficient between roof and hydraulic support. By the applications of measures such as the oblique layout of the working face, cutting the floor into a step pattern, moving the support under pressure, and raising the setting load, the support stability was controlled effectively.

In spite of a global economy that continues to seesaw and a U.S. Congress that is at odds with the president and themselves, cities around the world are still spending billions on their infrastructure. And that bodes well for the underground construction and tunneling industry and the professionals who work in it. In June, 1,405 of those professionals gathered in San Francisco, CA for the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). In addition to the first rate technical programming, attendees were able to see first-hand the latest in tunneling technology from 127 exhibitors who occupied 152 booths. Two short courses preceded the conference and two field trips were offered following the conference.

This paper outlines the use of tunneling headwall softeyes for transit construction projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) over the past decade. Due to spatial constraints, tunnel boring machines were used to construct the underground tunnels requiring the design of launch and exit shafts with headwall softeyes to facilitate tunneling operations. Variable ground conditions and shaft geometries lead to the development of innovative headwall and tunnel softeye design applications using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) elements (beams, reinforcing bars, and tiebacks). This paper outlines the challenges and benefits associated with designing and constructing shafts using various systems. Lessons learned throughout design and construction of more than 20 structures over the past 10 years are outlined. The constructability challenges with using FRP and design performance are also discussed. For over a decade, the City of Toronto has been expanding its metropolitan transit network with a variety of new transit construction projects. Two recent projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for underground infrastructure include the Toronto York Spadina Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit project. These add a total of 31 new stations and 18.6 km (11.5 miles) of underground transit (TTC 2017) (EllisDon 2016). Due to ground conditions and spatial constraints of existing surface infrastructure, these projects utilized tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to construct the underground tunnels requiring the design of various types of shafts and headwalls to facilitate underground tunneling operations. To allow for tunneling through the headwalls, these shafts were designed with “softeyes” - a section of the wall without metal reinforcement that allows the TBMs to tunnel through.

The economic interest of oceanic ferromanganese crusts and nodules is determined by high grades of major, rare and earth rare elements in these types of marine minerals [1]. Modern oceanic ferromanganese deposits have a global distribution with the largest fields in the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Ocean still remains a poorly explored region. The first ferromanganese deposits from the deep part of the Arctic Ocean were recovered almost at the same time in 2012 both in US and Russian cruises to the Chukchi Borderland (1) and Mendeleev Ridge (2). Preliminary results of mineral deposits from the first area were reported at UMI-2012 by James Hein et al. [2]. We present here the data of ferromanganese deposits from the Mendeleev Ridge.

With gentle bedding within the zone of support pressure the delamination in roof rocks may occur only on those stratification planes where cohesiveness of rock is close to zero. Unlike this, at dip angles of more than 30-35° disintegration of rock occurs on the surfaces with cohesion up to 5 MPa. Therefore, the delamination in roof rocks at inclined beds is greater than at gently dipping ones. The original disintegration along the pressure fissures with the formation of block structure at inclined strata is not typical, and it may be observed only in roofs with included thick rocks; in this case, the orientation of fractures depends on the angle of seam inclination. Deformation of roof roocks above the mined-out space is determined by anisotropy of layers stiffness (hardness). With the increase of dip angle the own bearing capacity of layers will rise in the direction of strike. It was emphasized that the natural and technological factors are of great importance for rock pressure manifestation in longwalls.

The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted.
