"The Volvo BM 861 U articulated truck is one of the few underground diesel units manufactured by an organization which shares the same corporate roof as the engine manufacturer. As a consequence, the unit has provided an opportunity for the characteristics of the entire system- turbocharged aftercooled engine, transmission and exhaust scrubber- to interact to minimize emission levels. The performance of the components of the system, as evaluated by full-scale dynamometer testing, is summarized. The over-all effect of the various innovations was a 38% reduction in the recommended ventilation level over that of the bare engine.IntroductionThe Mining Research Laboratories of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada is required, as part o f the certification service of the Canadian Explosive Atmosphere s Laboratory, to test the exhaust emissions of diesel engines, and to recommend appropriate amounts of fresh ventilating air to minimize the risks to health of underground personnel working with, or in the vicinity of, such diesel engines. Volvo BM AB of Sweden made application for the certification of the BM 861 U truck during a period in which EMR personnel were engaged in a number of research projects concerned with improving the environment in dieselized mines. One such avenue of research was the venturi or high-energy scrubber; as the BM 861 U was equipped with this type of scrubber , EMR and Volvo BM agreed to cooperate in a considerably more extensive investigation than would be normal for a certification application. The outcome of some of this research is summarized in this paper."

The optimisation of a metallurgical plant requires two kinds of sampling systems. The first provides samples to follow process changes, so in due time actions to maintain key parameters within pre-established specifications can be applied. The second provides composite samples at the end of a working shift to demonstrate that valuable constituents sent to the plant went to either a final concentrate or to the tailings in a logical, expected proportion. Contrary to what many experts may claim, these two kinds of sampling requirements are incompatible and cannot be fulfilled using the same sampling systems; this is because the required samples have completely different objectives. A process control sample is an instantaneous sample with increments taken at short intervals, and the objective is to know where the process is at any given time. Excellent accuracy is not a must, however good precision is recommended since a possible process correction may need to be made. Online analysers fed with in-stream stationary cutters or other kinds of in-stream or by-stream probes can do well for such a mission. A composite sample for metallurgical accounting with increments collected over a long period of time, for which excellent accuracy and good precision are both required, must be generated by sophisticated and extremely well-maintained cross-stream sampling stations. The use of process control sampling systems to achieve good metallurgical accounting has been promoted by several manufacturers of sampling equipment around the world; it is a grave mistake that is misleading top management and a practice that should be scrutinised and preferably eliminated. Furthermore, bias tests used to prove otherwise are often based on insufficient data to draw valid conclusions; a guideline is provided.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2014. "The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) has been developed by Search Minerals to extract nickel and cobalt VALUES (from nickel laterite ores (saprolites) and Caron plant residues. The technology consists of sulfuric acid atmospheric leaching of the ores or residues followed by neutralization and recovery of nickel and cobalt. The acid addition is carefully controlled to maximize nickel and cobalt extraction while minimizing overall consumption of acid by various gangue reactions. The final recovery processes can be tailored for maximum economic benefit. The use of resin-in-pulp processing is advocated as the most cost effective method for initial recovery of nickel and cobalt from lower grade materials. INTRODUCTIONCommercial processes for laterite ore treatment vary according to laterite type and local conditions. The two general categories of laterite ore are saprolites and limonites.Saprolites are generally treated by pyrometallurgical processes for reduction of nickel to matte or ferro nickel alloys. The high cost of drying, chemical reduction and electric furnace smelting requires that the saprolite grade for economic processing is of the order of 1.8% nickel or higher. There are of course large amounts of saprolite that fall below this “cut-off” grade that are not currently economic.Limonites can be treated by the Caron Process which involves drying of the ore, a reduction roast of the whole ore to reduce nickel and cobalt (and some iron) to the metallic state followed by ammonium – ammonium carbonate solution to leach nickel and cobalt. Nickel and cobalt recovery are low (70-85% for Ni and 20-50% for Co). The Caron plant tailings therefore contain high levels of unrecovered nickel and cobalt. Relatively few plants have used the Caron Process and new installations are not anticipated due to the high energy cost of drying and reduction roasting. Nevertheless, plants in Brazil (Niquelandia), Australia (Yabulu) and Cuba continue to operate.The high pressure acid leach (HPAL) process was pioneered at Moa Bay in Cuba in the 1960’s in the treatment of limonites. In the 1990’s the HPAL process was touted to revolutionize the nickel industry with low capital and operating costs for new installations. Murrin Murrin, Cawse and Bulong in Australia were started and in each case the technical difficulties of operating at extreme temperature and pressure conditions and the challenges in “ramping up” a complex hydrometallurgical facility conspired to cause these plants to fail economically. At present, Cawse and Bulong are closed and Murrin Murrin continues to operate after undergoing a financial restructuring."

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar a camada de óxido formada na superfície externa de tubos de reforma retirados de serviço após diferentes tempos de operação, em função da temperatura em que os mesmos estão expostos que varia com altura dos tubos. A caracterização consistiu da análise morfológica da camada de óxido utilizando um microscópio eletrônico de varredura de alta resolução e mapeamentos de composição química por EDS para verificar a distribuição dos óxidos presentes na mesma. Observou-se que a distribuição dos diferentes óxidos apresentou uma sequência padrão e que a camada de óxido aumenta com a temperatura e tempo de operação, bem como a camada subsuperficial empobrecida de carbetos de cromo.

The relevance of ore-dressing mineralogical investigations to developing and improving metallurgical flow-sheets is discussed and examples are given of the application of such studies to various types of ores and mill products (Au, Cu-Sn, Ni and Sn). The mineralogical investigations described illustrate (a) assessment of the feasibility of ore pre-concentration by heavy-media cyclone separation, (b) evaluation of the potential applicability of various metallurgical treatment processes to an ore, and (c) characterization of mill products to assess circuit efficiency and to guide circuit modifications.

Raw coal will often break intragranularly in either a completely random way or in a differential mode where one species will have a different rate of breakage than another. Locked coal-ash and coal-pyrite particles can also break by the preferential detachment of one species from another along zones of inherent weakness in locked particle assemblages. The mode. cf breakage is largely a function of the nature of the feed, but it is also influenced by the comminution device and the operating variables. Evidence of breakage of particles in the various modes is seen in the crushing of raw coal and middlings particles with a rotary beaker, jaw crusher, rolls, hammer mill and rod mill. Evidence from the literature indicates the detachment mode is often important for coal, ores and metallurgical products. Further confirmation comes from the crushing of a specially prepared 'ore' of sized magnetite in plaster of Paris.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. Currently, the operation consists of an underground mine and integrated processing plant. Uranium is produced from leaching of flotation tailings and is a co-product to copper cathode with by-product gold and silver bullion. The Olympic Dam geometallurgy team began studying ore from the Southern Mine Area (SMA) in 2006 and soon discovered uranium behaviour was far more variable than the behaviour in the Northern Mine Area, which had been mined from the start of the operation in 1988. The primary objective of Olympic Dam geometallurgy is to develop metallurgical performance predictors that reliably describe the process performance of different ore types and distribute these into the resource block model for use as a fundamental input into mine planning. The nature of the uranium mineralisation (compositionally and texturally complex and highly variable) meant that classic mineralogy techniques alone could not provide the resolution required for prediction of uranium extraction. However, the combination of quantitative mineralogy, results from laboratory-scale leach tests and modelling within the geometallurgy program has enabled prediction of both uranium flotation recovery (via association with sulphides) and uranium leach extraction, including at variable leach conditions. These stope-based predictions have supported trade-off decisions between operating costs and uranium revenue, and have predicted the changing recovery as the mining operations have moved into the Southern Mine Area in recent years.

The difficulties inherent in the production of alumina by the formation of potassium alum and its subsequent thermal dehydration and decomposition have been overcome , to a large extent , in a process developed at the Boulder City Station of the Bureau of Mines . This process is applicable to the reserves of alunite known to occur in several Western States and , possibly , to certain clay and low-grade bauxite deposits known to exist in this country . The operations sequence of the process is shown in the flow sheet (fig . 1) . Only those steps included within the heavy line are considered in this report . Four different procedures for dehydration of alum were investigated ; ( 1 ) Spray drying , ( 2 ) rotary - kiln drying , ( 3 ) dry grinding in a thermal ball mill , and ( 4 ) dehydration in the vertical- column flash dehydrator . Based upon fuel requirements and other practical considerations , the vertical- column dehydrator , or some modification of its operating principle , offers the botter possibility for commercial use .

Para ello, se utilizó material procedente de Cerro Verde, donde se buscó lograr una lixiviación ácida por medio del ácido sulfúrico producido por las bacterias Thiobacillus, obteniendo satisfactoriamente minerales de tipo chalcopirita y calcosita iones solubles, entre otros importantes minerales.

Talc has been the focus of recent civil litigation based on claims that asbestos minerals exist in talc deposits and therefore have caused asbestos-related diseases in those who have regularly used talc products. Such litigation, and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits, challenges the talc mining industry in Montana and elsewhere in the world. The talc deposits in southwest Montana were formed by hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marbles and are still actively mined. In general, talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic and lacking in amphiboles. This paper includes data from analyses of representative ore samples from this mining region in southwest Montana. The results conclude that the presence of asbestos minerals — both amphiboles and chrysotile — is unlikely and that the ores are nearly monomineralic, as expected. Samples were characterized using a suite of analytical methods, namely, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microprobe analyses, which allowed us to determine the minerals present and the formation process. Our data and interpretations suggest that previous identification of asbestos minerals in these deposits is not accurate.

The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. Deposition of hard chromium coatings using electrodeposition is accompanied by emission of hexavalent chromium mists which is a carcinogenic. Hence alternative chromium deposition technologies are being investigated. Sputter deposition is a strong candidate to economically deposit hard chromium coatings in an environmentally friendly way. Chromium coatings of 2-3 µ m thickness were deposited on plain carbon steel coupons using RF magnetron sputter deposition. Depositions were carried out with 0 to 22 vol% nitrogen in the plasma. Structure of the coatings was studied using x-ray diffraction analysis With increasing nitrogen contents, formation of the two nitride phases was observed. The pure chromium phase was detected in coatings with up to 7% nitrogen in the sputtering gas. The solid solution of nitrogen in the pure Cr phase coating was identified by shifts of Cr x-ray diffraction peaks to higher d-spacing. The microhardness of the coatings deposited at a substrate temperature of 200°C showed an increase in hardness with increasing nitrogen content from 600 kgf/mm2 (5.9 GPa) at 0% nitrogen to I250 kgf/mm2 (I2.25 GPa) at 9.5 % nitrogen and a subsequent decrease in hardness to I 100 kgf/mm2 (11 GPa) beyond 9.5 % nitrogen in the sputtering gas. This corresponds to the formation of the hard Cr2N phase, at 9.5 % nitrogen, and CrN phase, at I5.7 % nitrogen. The reported bulk hardness values of Cr2N and CrN are I600 kgf/mm2 (I5.7 GPa) and I 100 kgf/mm2 (11 GPa) respectively. For pure Cr phase coatings, there is a slight increase in hardness for coatings deposited at 7. I % nitrogen from that without nitrogen in the sputtering gas. This could possibly result from the solid solution strengthening of the Cr lattice by nitrogen. For films deposited at 200°C, phases of the deposited films seem to be the overwhelming factor in controlling the microhardness.

"This paper presents some studies on recovering valuable elements from Chinese coal by-products, including coal combustion fly ash, stone coal ash, and coal flotation tailings. Both commercialized technologies and economic potential recovery methods are described in this study. Magnetically stabilized air-dense medium fluidized bed separation, tribo-electrostatic separation, froth flotation, and hydrometallurgical methods are discussed in recovering various valuable elements in Chinese coal by-products from different coalfields. These valuable elements include iron, carbon, aluminum, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, uranium, titanium, scandium, silicon, vanadium and phosphorus, etc. The ultimate goal is to fully utilize all valuable elements in coal by-product. Each component within coal by-product should be efficiently segregated to its highest value. INTRODUCTION Coal is mainly composed of energy-producing elements carbon and hydrogen. In addition to these elements, coal usually contains many other valuable elements, including iron, aluminum, silicon, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, vanadium, uranium, titanium, scandium, and phosphorus, etc. These coal-associated elements are significantly enriched in coal combustion by-product fly ash because of majority of main components, carbon and hydrogen elements, being removed. Table 1 provides the chemical composition range of the main elements oxides in 12 Chinese fly ash samples collected from coal power plants located in Northeast China, Northwest China, Southwest China, and Southeast China. It can be seen from Table 1 that the major mineral components of different ashes are similar, but the bulk chemistry of different fly ashes may vary widely due to the changes of ratios of the mineral components in different coals. The major mineral components in various Chinese coal combustion fly ash are silicates, iron oxides, and unburned carbon."

The existing US-70 Bridge over the Gila River at Bylas, Arizona is planned to be replaced due to its current poor condition. The replacement bridge is planned to be a 15-span, 1,904-foot (580 meter) long bridge, the third-longest bridge in the state highway system. Within the Gila River floodplain, granular alluvial soil is underlain by cohesive lacustrine soil; bedrock was expected due to nearby terrain but not encountered within the geotechnical exploration depth of 166.5 feet (51 meters) or less. Based on the anticipated loading conditions, design scour depths and the soil conditions, the full structural loads are carried by large diameter drilled shafts; therefore accurately determining the axial capacity of the proposed drilled shafts has important practical and safety implications. The conventional methods for axial capacity determination may be overly conservative to use for design in the site’s layered granular and hard clay soils. An Osterberg cell load test was performed to obtain detailed information on the load transfer from the drilled shaft in side friction and base resistance to allow optimization of the bridge foundation design. The fullscale field test played a significant role in the design of the project’s deep foundations, notably, by incorporating the specific subsoil properties and consequently, an exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading. This paper provides the results of the geotechnical site investigations, drilled shaft load testing procedures, and shaft load distribution from the load test results. Comparisons were developed between predicted axial capacities of drilled shafts using several design methodologies and the axial capacity measured from static load testing. The load test results showed that underestimation of the axial capacity is evident using conventional methodologies. The exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading combined with a site-specific design approach, resulted in a substantial reduction of foundation costs due to reduced drilled shaft dimensions.

Mining and processing of raw materials is one of the earliest activities of man for survival and development. The products are used for making jewelleries, metal tools, and for exchange of goods and services. However, despite the benefits of mine recoveries, it’s negative and long term effects on the environment and lives remain the point of discussion throughout the world. This study summarizes findings of researches in active/abandoned lead–zinc mines in Enyigba and Ishiagu mining districts including social surveys in the localities surrounding the mines in order to ascertain the effects on the inhabitants. Lead–zinc mining in Enyigba and Ishiagu, southeastern Nigeria has lasted for decades and has affected the socio-economic well-being of the host communities. There are evidences of soil, water, and plants contamination by Pb, Zn, Cd, and Mn in these mining communities. The mining activities also affect the overall social development of the host communities. These effects include retardation in educational development, health care provision, unemployment, and access to potable water supply. Others are rise in poverty level, social amenities, sanitary/hygiene level, high cost of living, and fertility rate. Possible mitigation strategies such as to liaising with relevant government agencies in collaboration with mine owner, mine workers, and host communities can ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

The effects of hydrostatic pressures to 26 kbars on the micro structure of poly crystalline Cd, Zn, Bi, Sn, Zr, Mg, Cu, and Fe were examined. Pressure-induced microscopic plastic flow in the form of boundary migration, slip, multiple slip, or twinning has been observed either singly or in combination in cadmium, zinc, bismuth, and tin. No deformation was observed in zirconium, magnesium, copper, and iron. The occurrence of such deformation, in terms of its intensity and initiation pressure, relates directly to the degree of anisotropy in the linear compressibility. Pressure cycling does not significantly affect the residual tensile properties of a zinc alloy which exhibits pressure-induced deformation similar to that of Pure zinc. CLASSICAL elastic theory predicts that a superim-posed hydrostatic pressure will not induce shear stresses in an ideal material. Thus, in the case of homogeneous and isotropic materials plastic flow will not occur as a result of pressure exposure, regardless of the magnitude of the pressure, unless some form of phase transformation or permanent density change takes place. However, real materials, such as metals, often vary considerably from the condition of homogeneity and isotropy. For this reason, Vu and johannin' examined and observed hydrostatic pressure-induced microscopic deformation in polycrystalline cadmium and, zinc, but not in aluminum, to pressures of 9 kbars and indicated that its occurrence is related to anisotropy in the linear compressibility. In addition, Davidson and omaan' have reported pressure-induced deformation in polycrystalline bismuth below the 1-11 transformation pressure. It becomes apparent then that under certain conditions hydrostatic pressure can induce localized internal shear stresses in some metals of sufficient magnitude to cause plastic flow. In this work, eight pure single-phase metals of different lattice structures and degrees of elastic anisotropy were examined after pressure exposures of up to 26 kbars in order to establish the conditions under which such deformation occurs and the type of deformation as a function of pressure. Heat stress is a major concern for the health, safety and productivity of miners working in hot and humid underground mines. At greater depth, heat inside underground mines increases due to geothermal gradient, heat released from high-capacity machinery, exposed rock surface, auto-compression of air, human metabolism, etc. Prolonged physical work in thermal environments severely affects the health, safety and efficiency of miners. In order to address this important issue, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been conducted. This SLR aimed to identify the research gap in the area of heat stress effect on underground miners and its control. An extensive literature search was carried out on numerous digital databases, grey literature and conference proceedings to identify relevant research work for this review. Moreover, the impactful studies, methodologies and preventive measures undertaken during the past five decades on the effect of heat stress on underground miners were retrospectively analysed, with a broader aim to explore the need for further research on this pertinent topic. Overall, 571 references were identified from the literature review, out of which 51 research articles addressing the sources of heat, heat stress effects on miners, heat stress indices and control measures for heat stress in underground mines were selected as primary papers for detailed review. Pre-developed fatigue is one of the prime causes of health hazard, safety and productivity loss of miners working in underground high heat stress zones. Hence, development of a better heat stress index integrating personal, environmental parameters and pre-developed fatigue (PDF) of miners is essential.

Patent records show that the idea that the burning of fuels can be improved by mixing or pretreating them with chemicals 6 dates back to the early years of the last century. By 1845, English and French patents included the specific beneficiations of elimination or reduction of smoke, soot, and clinker; reduction of the ashes, presumably meaning the total weight of refuse from the ashpit; elimination of sulphur fumes; increase in the rate of burning; increase in the time a given charge of fuel would last; and, in most patents, a saving of fuel. The earlier patents specified additions up to 80 pounds or more per ton of fuel, but after 1860 the quantity was rarely more than 4 pounds. There is no record of the extent to which these patents were commercialized, but after 1884 many American patents were assigned to companies specializing in treatment of coal, so it is probable that the products were marketed on a considerable scale at least as early as that date. From 1900 on, many companies marketed proprietary products that were sold under the general name of "fuel savers." Since its establishment in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has continually received inquiries about these products and, at the request of other govern-mental departments, has tested some used in accordance with the instructions of the purveyors; the results were all negative and, within the accuracy of measurements, the products had no effect on the burning.
