"Located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, the Peñasquito operation is comprised of the Peñasco and Chile Colorado (Brecha Azul) deposits. Openpit mining (prestripping) began in 2010 and full production commenced during 2011. The openpit mines feed both a sulfide concentrator (mill) and a heap leach pad. The project is owned by Goldcorp Inc. Peñasquito is a poly metallic deposit with Au, Ag, Zn and Pb being recovered as payable metals.As a consequence of lower grade ores expected with advancing mine life, Peñasquito is facing a declining metal production profile. To maximize returns and asset value, plant modifications, including the addition of a carbon prefloat circuit and a pyrite leach circuit to improve recovery, are currently being undertaken. This carbon prefloat circuit will enable the recovery of precious and base metals from carbonaceous sediments. This material is currently being stockpiled. With the associated increase in complexity in the process circuit, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery at the Peñasquito operation. The addition of the carbon prefloat circuit was also a key driver in allowing the Chile Colorado openpit to be developed.These conditions alongside Goldcorp’s drive to increase profitability and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and multifaceted. However, the ability to accurately route materials from the ore control system is critical to site success, and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption and implementation of a new ore control (OC) technology. Examples of these technological innovations in the ore control program are discussed in this article and include improvements in geomodeling, material routing and reconciliation. Successful implementation of these elements has led to significant improvements in selectivity, performance and data management, while reducing the variance between planning and execution, thus helping to drive overall improvement across the operation."

Because of the importance of oil-shale reserves the Bureau or Mines resumed research investigations in this field beginning in 1944. The Bureau early decided to build a Large-scale demonstration plant to accomplish the dual purpose of obtaining design data and to produce crude shale oil for refining studies. Two 40-ton-Capacity batch N-T-U (Nevada-Texas-Utah) retorts were completed for this purpose in 1947. After a preliminary operation, the plant was used to investigate process variables of air rate, recycle gas rate, and shale particle size and crude. Correlations obtained from these variables are presented in this report. Researchers concluded that recycle gas was not necessary for efficient operation of the process. Short comings of the batch method of processing the oil shale are pointed out in the report. Several periods of prolonged production operations were carried out. During these periods, the retorts were operated to produce as much crude oil per day as possible. The lifetime operation of the N-T-U retorts was divides into three periods, namely, preliminary operation, process variable study, and production operation. During the preliminary operation, 187 runs were made with a total of 7,596 tons of raw shale used to produce 3,688 barrels of crude shale oil. During the process variable study, 179 runs were made with a consumption of 7,494 tons of raw shale and a production of 4,218 barrels of crude shale oil. The production operation consisted of 554 runs in which 22,457 tons of raw shale was used to produce 12,359 barrels of crude shale ail. The overall total for the lifetime operation of the retorts consisted of 920 runs with a total consumption of 37,547 tons of raw shale and a production if 20,265 barrels of crude shale oil.

The Bureau of Mines measured the vapor pressure of FeC12 , FeBr2, FeI2, Sb, Bi, Cd, Mg, Pb, FeC13 , and VCl2 using the Knudsen-and torsion-effusion methods, and on FeC13 -NaC1 mixtures, Au2Cl6, and MgNi2 using only the Knudsen method. Apparent vapor pressures calculated from the experimental data vary with orifice size and method of determination. Reaction with residual oxygen in the instruments was noted to have an effect on the iron halide data. Vapor pressure curves plotted as log P versus 1/T (where P is pressure and T is absolute temperature) for one substance using several orifice sizes tended to converge at a single point when extrapolated beyond the experimental region. All of the data, except those of VC12, agree with previously published results. The importance of comparing effusion measurements with those obtained by other methods and the variations encountered with various orifice sizes are discussed.

As the global demand for metal values expands, it becomes increasingly important to create more sustainable mining operations. Consequently, considerable research and technology development is required to produce processes which are both more energy efficient and have a minimal environmental impact. One potential technology is the utilisation of microwave pre-treatment to reduce the energy requirements in comminution. Microwaves can preferentially heat the valuable mineral phases in an ore and the resulting differential thermal expansion leads to the formation of microfractures along the grain boundaries. As a result of the preferential heating, ore competency is reduced, mineral liberation is enhanced, a coarser grind size can be employed, and plant throughput can be increased. Furthermore, microwave pre-treatment can be combined with advanced ore sorting, to decrease the quantity of gangue material processed downstream and hence reduce tailings production. Previous studies on the microwave treatment of ores over the last 30 years have mainly been limited to low power bench-scale studies and there is a paucity of information on pilot and/or commercial scale studies. In the present research, the microwave heating behaviours of over 40 ores have been studied at the bench-scale. These results were used to generate a database, from which a unique classification system was developed. This system was used to rank the amenability of any given ore for microwave pre-treatment. This knowledge can be employed to predict the performance of the ores in the high-power pilot scale tests and thus can be used as a pre-screening tool. The effects of high-power microwave pre-treatment on grindability and liberation were reported. Additionally, the ore sorting potential was evaluated using a combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and microwave infrared (MW/IR).

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on substitute brazing filler alloys with properties similar to those of silver filler alloys in an effort to conserve silver and reduce hazards from cadmium emissions. Experimental work was conducted first on the commercial silver brazing alloys BAg-I, BAg-la, BAg-2, and BAg-3 to establish criteria for evalu-ating the substitute alloys. Properties investigated included the wettability of copper, brass, and steel substrates, and the strength of joints made with the filler alloys. A series of experimental alloys containing 50 to 60 pct Cu, 20 to 28 pct Mn, and 17 to 30 pct Zn was prepared and evaluated, together with Cu-Mn-Zn alloys with 5 pct Pb or 2 pct Ni. Wetting properties and joint strengths were not as good as those for silver filler alloys, and the high application temperatures reduced the copper and brass base metal strengths. However, experimental alloys containing 70 pct Cu, 15 to 20 pct Mn, and 10 to 16 pct Sn had wetting and strength properties approaching those of the silver filler alloys. The application temperatures for these alloys were high-er than those for silver fillers, but not as high as those for the Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. With the Cu-Mn-Sn alloy fillers, copper alloy joint members are less deteriorated by recrystallization than when applying Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. The Cu-Mn-Sn system has potential for further devel-opment as a substitute brazing alloy system, particularly if the melting temperature can be reduced by the addition of other elements without decreasing the ductility and wetting.

O presente trabalho realiza um estudo das propriedades mecânicas de metais de solda de alta resistência obtidos pelo processo de soldagem GMAW com diferentes condições de soldagem. Foram soldadas juntas multipasses pelo processo GMAW, com preaquecimento de 150°C e 250°C, corrente contínua, posição plana e aporte térmico médio de 1,4kJ/mm. Após a soldagem, realizaram-se ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos em corpos-de-prova retirados integralmente do metal de solda depositado, tanto na condição de como soldado quanto após tratamento térmico a 600°C por 1 hora. Os resultados mostraram que a tenacidade ao impacto experimentou uma redução substancial após o tratamento térmico.

"Abstract - Gold mineralization in the Main Reef Complex at Sheba Gold Mine is hosted within shear zones in a sequence of shales and greywackes of the Fig Tree Group. Competency contrasts between these rocks and a steeply dipping chert unit provided a locus for the development of right lateral steeply dipping shear zones. A set of flatter dipping shear fractures crosscut these zones with their intersections defining a system of en échelon ore shoots.Mineralization is both of vein type and disseminated strata-controlled replacement type. The latter occurs mainly within the wall rocks to the shear zones. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the major sulfides, with arsenopyrite being confined largely to greywacke beds and pyrite to the more iron-rich shale units. Gold was introduced, together with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and early arsenopyrite, toward the end stages of a first pyrite phase. The mineralizing fluids were introduced along dilated cleavage planes and, emanating from these, produced a series of replacement fronts. Mineralization was syntectonic to late tectonic and occurred under conditions of progressive deformation, resulting in sulfides which are concentrated in the hinges of shear-related folds and semi­ massive sulfides within tension fractures which are folded, attenuated and fractured .An analysis of the structures shows a sequence of events in which an initial ductile simple-shear event with a steep sense of movement was succeeded by a more brittle strike-slip event. Mineralization is temporally related to the latter. This evolution in structural style was probably related to reactivation of the Sheba Fault as a transcurrent fault during emplacement of large granitoid bodies."

"Discussed is the use of wet Deep Soil Mixing, generally executed with single mixing tools 0.8 to 1.6m in diameter, employed in the foundation of viaduct supports. The applications involve economical patterns of ground improvement, covering in average about 40% of the foundation area or less, which contribute to the competitiveness of DSM solutions when compared to traditional piling. The focus is on selected aspects of the geotechnical design, applicable for geo-composite systems in which the interaction between the stabilised and the native soil should also be considered. Evaluation of settlement can be carried out with simplified methods, accounting for punching effects, or with more advanced FE models in case foundation tilt or differential settlements become important. Potential bending of DSM columns should be considered when evaluating column stresses, especially when dealing with deep deposits of soft soil and/or foundations loaded with overturning moments and/or high horizontal forces. Statistical evaluation of UCS data using lognormal distribution is recommended, and a new classification system for DSM application is proposed. Field investigations and monitoring data from completed projects are also presented.INTRODUCTIONThe first applications of wet Deep Soil Mixing in foundation of road viaducts constructed across and along the newly built A2-highway in Poland took place in 2002. Following detailed analyses, it was concluded that 39 viaducts, originally designed to rest upon large diameter piles in order to reduce excessive settlement of individual supports, could also be founded directly on the ground improved with DSM columns, fulfilling all relevant requirements of serviceability and ultimate limit states (SLS and ULS, respectively). It was also noticed that shorter construction times and lower costs of ground improvement with DSM contributed to substantial economical savings as compared to classical piling. Since then, more than 250 road and railway viaducts have been successfully founded on DSM treated ground in Poland, and wet soil mixing is now seen as a reliable and widely accepted technology for this purpose. These applications, together with a parallel use of wet DSM for foundation of buildings, industrial halls and wind turbines, have drawn international attention to the state of practice of wet DSM in Poland for foundation of engineering objects. What follows is an attempt to summarise experience gained during planning and execution of DSM works for foundation of the majority of road and railway viaducts constructed in the last 13 years, with emphasis on selected design aspects and evaluation of collected data and observed performance.The design process of DSM treatment is iterative, as described e.g. in Annex B of EN 14679, and typically involves two main steps, i.e., the selection of the design strength of cemented soil, called soil-mix design, and the adoption of suitable column pattern, referred to as geotechnical design. Soil-mix design was initially based on purposely arranged simple laboratory tests, involving mixing of soil specimen with different cement types and dosages and subsequent strength testing. However, with a growing number of completed projects the accumulated field strength data of different stabilised soils have been more and more frequently used, reducing the need for preceding laboratory testing of soil-mix to special projects only. Information on cement factors utilised in Poland and the range of recommended compressive strengths for different stabilised soils, as well as on mixing tools and characteristics of the wet method applied, can be found in Topolnicki (2008). Consequently, soil-mix design is not further discussed herein. Selected aspects of the geotechnical design are the main focus."

One of the most frequently asked quesitons is: "Where is copper (price and usage) going?" I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

A two-inch diameter probe containing an intrinsic germanium detector, a canister-type solid cryogen cooling system, cooled FET preamplifier, linear amplifier, high voltage supply, analog-digital converter, microprocessor, buffer memory, bidirectional cable link, and all power supplies has been designed, assembled and tested. A surface support vehicle was designed, built and outfitted. A mini-computer system was constructed and preliminary software developed and tested. A special handling system for a Cf-252 neutron source was designed and has been ordered. The entire system (less the neutron source) is ready for its first field tests. Lab description of the system is presented.

"Helium has great value to the oil and as industry as a tracer gas, according to tests just completed in the Elk Hills Field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Kearn County, California. When used as .a tracer gas, small percentages of helium are mixed with natural gas pumped into a reservoir for conservation, repressuring, or cycling purposes. Because minute quantities of helium added to natural gases can be detected by analytical methods and accurately determined, the variations of the helium content of gas withdrawn from various parts of a field when helium has been added to the injected gas give interesting and long-sought data on the movement of injected gas through reservoirs.The Bureau of Mines engineers began their studies of the use of helium as a tracer material in gas-injection operations in the Elk Hills, California, oil field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, in response to a request by the Navy Department for assistance in connection with an expanded oil-production program instituted in that field. This report discusses the Bureau's work on the problem of determining the direction and extent of migration of injected gas in the Elk Hills reservoir by the use of helium as a tracer gas,The Bureau appreciates the cooperation and assistance of Commodore W. G. Greenman, U.S.N., director, and Commander R. Walling, U.S.N.R., Assistant director, Naval Petroleum .and Oil Shale Reserves, Washington, D. C., Captain H. P. "INTRODUCTION The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war materiel; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this critical fuel situation, an investiga¬tion was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England. Meta-anthracite, which is a satisfactory fuel for some purposes, had been mined in Massachusetts and Rhode Island many years ago. However, the introduction of freer-burning anthracite and bituminous coal into New England markets resulted in the abandonment of these mines.The coal mined in the vicinity of Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island, Newport County, R. I., had been used successfully for smelting copper ore and for fuel. It is reported that this coal is less graphitic than the material mined at Cranston near Providence, R. I. The coal is meta-anthracite and does not burn freely. However, improved equipment for burning coal has been developed, and if minable reserves of meta-anthracite should be found, methods of burning it probably could be devised.The purpose of this investigation was to determine sources of additional fuel. Since meta-anthracite mined at Portsmouth had been used with some success, an investigation was undertaken to determine the characteristics and continuity of the beds in this area."

Some months ago the Bureau of Mines began research of a fundamental character on sulphur in petroleum. In the course of this work, the usual qualitative test for sulphur in organic compounds1 was applied to certain oils that were believed to contain approximately 0.5 percent sulphur. No sulphur was found, and, as a check on the qualitative test, the oils were subjected to quantitative determination of this element by the oxygen-bomb method.2 The sulphur content of the oils ranged from 0.10 per cent to 0.50 per cent. This experience led to further trial of the qualitative test for organic sulphur, both on the oils mentioned above, and on common sulphur-containing organic substances. No difficulty was experienced in detecting the element in the latter, but with the petroleum oils the test, as usually performed, could not be relied upon to detect less than 0.60 per cent of sulphur consistently. The use of mechanically polished pure sheet copper for the detection of free sulphur, hydrogen sulphide, and perhaps other sulphur compounds has been recommended.3

In recent years, increasing attention has been focused on the hydrometallurgical treatment of base metals feeds, especially nickel laterites and polymetallic sulphides. One approach that has received some attention is the use of high?concentration chloride solutions (brines), which are now showing some promise after initial setbacks. Iron is usually the major component in the base metal feed to such processes, and if physical means cannot be used to remove it, then the iron concentration in the pregnant leach solution is always significant. This paper presents some of the background theory on the hydrolysis of iron in high-strength (>3M) chloride brines, and discusses the roles of temperature, solution concentration and free acidity. It is shown that the system is complex, but that crystalline and readily-filterable hematite can be generated, and that the system has a low energy requirement.

IN INDUSTRIAL and domestic daily life carbon monoxide is the most frequently encountered toxic gas. hazardous concentrations of carbon monoxide may be present in the vicinity of many industrial operations, such as metallurgical processes, coke ovens, and fuel- and synthesis-gas producers, and may be encountered in confined spaces, such as dwellings, garages, workshops, vehicular tunnels, and mining operations, in connection with the use of heaters, boilers, internal-combustion engines, after blasting operations, and after fires and explosions. Evaluation and control of the health and safety hazard caused by carbon monoxide depend primarily on the analytical detection of the presence of carbon monoxide and determination of its concentration in air and in various gaseous mixtures. The choice of method of analysis in any particular situation depends on such factors as required accuracy, range of concentration involved, convenience, speed of analysis required, quantity of sample available, qualitative composition of sample or atmosphere to be analyzed, and possible effects of interfering gases. Some of the methods described require only adequate understanding of operational techniques, whereas others require thorough appreciation and skill in applying the principles involved. The instruments and analytical procedures commonly used for detecting and determining carbon monoxide are described in detail, and reference is made to more specialized methods:

In copper smelting minimization of solid waste generation is receiving increased attention with more stringent environmental legislation and lower disposal space availability. Copper smelting slags generally being valorizable, solid waste generation is attributed to the presence in the feed of unvalorizable impurities which do not report to the slag and to the unavoidable formation of contaminated dilute acid solutions which need neutralization. As to unvalorizable impurities, solid waste minimization is achieved by rejecting them in the highest possible concentration. Dilute acid is mainly due to the formation of SO3 in the smelter gases and to the discard of decopperized bleed-off electrolyte. Its generation is substantially lowered by preventing SO3 formation, by converting the dilute acid to a valorizable product, e.g., by thermal decomposition for H2S04 recovery or by precipitation as chemical gypsum, and by suitable treatment of the bleed-off electrolyte for impurity removal. Industrial processes are evaluated and alternatives are discussed.

Again, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to another session of the 79th meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. The thing again that has always been impressive are the activities that we've had so far. The success in the meetings has been delightfully encouraging to all of our committee people. Please welcome the chairman of the session, Charlie Margolf. MR. MARGOLF: Thank you, Vernal. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It would be my privilege to serve as the session chairman this morning. To allow the maximum time for our speakers, I'll turn the microphone over to Bernie Bernstrom who will introduce our first speaker. MR. BERNSTROM: Thank you. As Vernal mentioned, Dan Jackson will be our first speaker. He is the Western Editor of Coal Age Magazine. Dan really doesn't need an introduction to this group. He's belonged to the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute about 25 years. Dan is a native of West Virginia and he's an ex-coal miner. He graduated form West Virginia University as an electrical engineer and worked for Amherst and West Bending Coal prior to employment by Coal Age Magazine. Back in 1972 Coal Age moved him to Denver from New York City. MR. JACKSON: When Vernal Mortensen asked me speak to the members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute earlier this year I found it impossible to say no to the guy because of what he has contributed to western coal. Little did 1 know that the subject he had in mind would be entitled, "An Outsider's View of Western Coal." At first I asked myself-I've been associated with the coal industry for some 38 years, 12 years in national operations and 26 years reporting on it. You might say that I've been married to two industries, coal and the business press for 26 years, but today I'll put on my business press hat and try to make an impression of what an outsider might think of western coal. But at the outset, let's get one thing straight: When you say press, whether it's business press, the media or whatever, and you heard some comments yesterday as far as what the media has done .to this industry and there's been some definitions bandied around as to just what an editor is. One of the most recent ones has defined an editor as a person who can talk on any subject with an open mouth. Now that's not my case. Secondly, I don't give long talks. Several years ago I was giving a rather lengthy talk to a group similar to this and it was halfway through the talk when I noticed one guy on my right looking at his watch quite frequently. I didn't mind that too much because all of us do that once in a while, but when he looked at his watch, took it off and shook it, I thought, "My God, better cut short." But for more than a decade western coal has enjoyed substantial annual increases in production from some 30,000,000 tons in 1970 to some 264,000,000 tons in 1981, but 1982 was a different story. We lost about 6,000,000 tons of production in that year. In 1983 it's expected to be a little worse than '82. Coal historically doesn't rebound from a recession as quickly as other industries. It takes about eight to 10 months longer for us to really get moving again and I'm afraid that you'll still have to don your fighting helmets and flack jackets when you go out into the market to sell your product. Western coal, as you know, has problems and al l of them are not going away when the recession ends and they won't go away overnight. I'm sure most of you are aware of what those problems are. Carl Bagge and Jim Harris, along with other speakers, at this meeting have educated us well on those problems and I'm sure you'll hear more from Jim Watt at today's luncheon. If everyone in this room were asked to list three orfourof the most serious problems facing western coal, I'd make book that the total of the answers wouldn't vary by more than 3 to 5%, if that much. But coal is not the only mining segment in the U.S. with problems. Metal and non-metal mining has its share, too. I'd like to step back into the past for a few minutes, if I may, to a time when our problems were just beginning. Since 1979 a third of the nation's mines, including coal, metal and nonmetal have been shut down. The total volume of all mining in the U.S. in that year totaled some $24 billion. Today that figure has dropped some 21 %. The after tax rate on return for mining companies has fallen from 6'/% in 1980 to minus 3% in 1983. But that's really not where our problems began. They began 20 years ago when a profound change began taking place in the U.S. economy. Our economy had been growing at about 2'/-3% annually without exception except for the great depression. Our inflation rate was about I'/%, interest rates were running about 6%, and the federal budget was $77 billion, really great figures compared to today. From 1960 to 1980 the federal budget increased almost 1.000% and taxed paid by individual families increased by 700% during that same period. Despite the huge increases in taxes, the federal deficit kept getting larger and larger year after year and within this 20 year period the national debt climbed to a trillion dollars. The liquid–liquid extraction behavior of lutetium from different acidic solutions was investigated using two extractants, D2EHPA and PC88A, in kerosene. Lutetium extraction reactions with D2EHPA and PC88A from HNO3 and H2SO4 solutions were chemically and thermodynamically analyzed. It was found that each Lu cation was complexed with six monomers of the organic extractant and released three protons. Simultaneously, the Lu cation was instituted in the P–O–H group of the extractants. Thermodynamic analysis of reactions between extractants and acidic solutions showed that the D2EHPA-HNO3 system is the most favorable for extracting lutetium. It is noted that the calculated equilibrium constant of the reaction in this system was approximately six times larger than that of the D2EHPA-H2SO4 system. However, the value of the equilibrium constant for the D2EHPA-HNO3 system was evaluated to be approximately 200 times greater than that of the PC88A-HNO3 system. Therefore, one can conclude that the extraction behavior of lutetium is more influenced by the extractant type than the solutionmedium. The synergistic effect of different mixtures of extractants on the solvent extraction of lutetium was also examined, and the highest synergistic factor was obtained for a binary mixture of PC88A:D2EHPA at the ratio of 4:1 for both aqueous solutions.
