EVERY forward step in civilization brings with it an increase in population and increasing demand for raw materials. Modern civilization, because of its industrial development, depends more and more for its well-being on ample supplies of raw materials; the higher the type of that civilization, the greater its dependence. No fact is more obvious than that the raw materials should be put to use with greatest prudence and efficiency. National life is not a matter of a decade or a century. Conservation is no longer a matter for political discussion; it is a vital element in the future welfare of all nations. Unfortunately, to the minds of many, conservation means the locking up of natural resources, their arbitrary withdrawal, bringing about, in short, a condition of industrial stagnation. This has occurred in past centuries through misdirected governmental effort. Two eminent engineers have variously defined conservation as follows:

There were present twelve- Directors, the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and fifteen guests. A committee of three was appointed to draft a suitable resolution of memorial of the services of Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr. The committee consists of Joseph W. Richards, Chairman, J. V. N. Dorr and Allen H. Rogers. William R. Walker was elected a Director in place of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Edwin Ludlow was elected a member of the Executive Committee in his stead. George C. Stone was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Membership in place of Mr. Johnson. The following resolutions were then adopted: RESOLVED, That a special business meeting of the Institute be and the same hereby is appointed to be, held at the office of the Institute, No. 29 West 39th Street, Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, on the 27th day of June, 1919, it 8.30 o'clock in the P. M. to consider and take action upon the proposal to change the name of the Institute to "American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incor-porated," and the further proposal to extend the corporate purposes of the Institute so that it shall, in addition to its other powers, be empowered to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of, those employed in these industries, by all lawful means.

Crystalline silica is the scientific name for a group of minerals composed of silicon and oxygen. The term crystalline refers to the fact that the oxygen and silicon atoms are arranged in a three-dimensional repeating pattern. This group of minerals has shaped human history since the beginning of civilization. From the sand used for making glass to the piezoelectric quartz crystals used in advanced communication systems, crystalline silica has been a part of our technological development. Crystalline silica's pervasiveness in our technology is matched only by its abundance in nature. It's found in samples from every geologic era and from every location around the globe. Scientists have known for decades that prolonged and excessive exposure to crystalline silica dust in mining environments can cause silicosis, a noncancerous lung disease. During the 1980's, studies were conducted that suggested that crystalline silica also was a carcinogen. As a result of these findings, crystalline silica has been regulated under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). Under HCS, OSHA regulated businesses that use materials containing 0.1 or more crystalline silica must follow Federal guidelines concerning hazard communication and worker training. Although the HCS does not require that samples be analyzed for crystalline silica, mineral suppliers or OSHA-regulated businesses may choose to do so if they wish to show that they are exempt from the requirements of HCS. Because crystalline silica is an extremely common mineral and the HCS will affect many mineral commodities, it is important then, that there be as clear an understanding as possible of what is and what is not crystalline silica, and where it is found and used, and how it is qualitatively and quantitatively identified. This primer is an attempt to accomplish this in as nontechnical a manner as possible. This primer will examine crystalline silica. Part I will describe, in nonscientific terms, what crystalline silica is and how we come in contact with it. Part" will discuss the regulatory decisions that have created new interest in this ancient and widespread substance and will present a nontechnical overview of the techniques used to measure crystalline silica. Because this primer is meant to be a starting point for anyone interested in learning more about crystalline silica, a list of selected readings and other resources is included. The detailed glossary, which defines many terms that are beyond the scope of this publication, is designed to help the reader move from this presentation to a more technical one, the inevitable next step.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake. Obstructed pressure-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the intake. Obstructed exhaust-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the return. The apparent advantages in running a fan "pressure" during working-hours, and " exhaust" between shifts, seem to justify the recognition of this combination as a standard form of ven-

This report contains Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 20 samples from5 areas on the arctic slope of Alaska. Two samples were condensates from the South Barrow gasfield, Barrow Lakes area. The remaining 18 samples were crude oils from the following areas: Barrow Lakes, 1 seepage sample; Umiat, 10 well samples; Cape Simpson, 1 seepage sample and 3 well samples; Fish Creek, 2 well samples; and Wolf Creek, I well sample. Table 1 summarizes information on the origin of the crude-oil samples, and table 2 summarizes characteristics of the samples. Item numbers in both tables correspond to item numbers of the analyses at the end of this report, and the samples are referred to by these numbers throughout the text.

The crystallo graphy of several grains of the lamellar Ni-Ni3 B eutectic solidified under conditions appvoachirt equilibriun has been examined.. A preferred interlace relationship has been observed in this system which may be described as: A detailed study of this interface by means of an atomistic model reveals the interface Plane to be puckered and more accurately describable as: Analysis of the atomic configuration on these planes reveals that this interface conforms to the orientation criteria proposed for directionally solidified lanzellar eutectics. In addition, a model is proposed to help explain the growth of a "puckered" interface. DURING the past several years an increasing number of unidirectional solidification experiments on eutectic alloys have been reported in the literature. The primary emphasis, in most cases, has been the effect of growth variables on microstructure. Some authors have, however, studied the crystallographic orientations and interfacial relationships resulting from these experiments. Four crystallographic studies have been published;'-4 in each of these there is a factor which tends to prohibit the extension of the observations beyond the particular system. In the Al-CuA12 system, the approximately equal volume fractions of the phases have resulted in sorrie controversy as to which phase constitutes the matrix. In the Mg-Mg,Sn eutectic the presence of several interconnecting lamellar systems2 complicates the analysis. The two remaining eutectics. 1nSb-b and Al-Ali, are both rodlike (the latter exhibits a plate morphology at low solidification rates): the matrix in each of these alloys is the simpler (fcc) phase. Studies of nucleation in eutectic alloys indicate that the more complex constituent is the nucleating -.phase.' For the purpose of an analysis of interface crystallography it was deemed desirable to study a lamellar system in which the matrix was the more complex and, presumably. the nucleating phase. Recently it has been shown that there is a eutectic in the Ni-B system between Ni3B and i; preliminary investigation by the authors indicated that the matrix in this eutectic is the boride phase. The structure of Ni,B is reported to be orthorhombic, the compound being isostructural with cementite. This eutectic is therefore analogous to that between austenite and cementite. Furthermore, the Ni-B system is not susceptible to a competing eutectic reaction as occurs in the Fe-C alloys; nor does it exhibit a eutectoid decomposition. For these reasons the study of the interfacial relationship in the Ni-Ni3B eutectic was undertaken. PROCEDURE Ingots of nominal composition 3.5 and 3.6 wt pct B were induction-melted in boron nitride crucibles within a graphite susceptor under a boric oxide slag; a dynamic argon atmosphere was maintained over the melt to prevent rapid oxidation of the susceptor. The raw materials used were 99.97 pct Ni from Huntington Metals Division of International Nickel Co. and 99.8+ pct B chips supplied by the United Mineral and Chemical Co. The analyses of the starting materials are listed in Table I. The melt was held at 1500cC for 2 hr to insure complete reaction and allowed to cool to room temperature. The castings were chemically analyzed for boron and were metallographically examined for uniformity. The metallographic samples were mechanically polished through 0.1 p A1,0, and etched with Carapella's reagent. Each master casting was cut up to make several specimen blanks which were remelted, in boron nitride crucibles, to form ingots of 1/2 to 3/4 in. in diarn by 7 in. long. These ingots were unidirectionally solidified using a modified vertical Bridgman technique. The rate of solidification was assumed to be equal to the uniform rate at which the crucible-susceptor assembly was withdrawn from the induction coil. This rate was varied from 1.18 to 2.21 cm per hr. In order to perform these experiments it was found necessary to redetermine the eutectic composition. This was accomplished by the zone-melting technique described by Yue and lark.' An ingot of 4.5 wt pct B was zone-melted in a horizontal boron nitride boat 7-1/2 in. long with a 112-in.-square cross section. A

No presente trabalho foi proposto uma análise da eficiência de desfosforação de uma mistura padrão M1 e outras cinco misturas, onde foi realizada variação da massa de mistura adicionada ao sistema (60,70 e 80g), temperatura de trabalho (1350ºC e 1350ºC ajustada) e metodologia de adição. Os testes experimentais foram realizados a uma temperatura de 1400°C, com agitação de 450 RPM, em um forno de resistência. Para a análise das propriedades da escória, foram realizadas simulações através do software de termodinâmica computacional FactSage 7.2 e análises de imagens obtidas da superfície do cadinho ao final dos experimentos no software Quantikov. A mistura M1 apresentou melhor desempenho do que as misturas em todas as situações estudadas, sendo observado que melhores condições experimentais foram a utilização de 70g de mistura, a uma temperatura de 1400ºC, com a metodologia padrão de adição de toda a massa da mistura no início do experimento.

Marrow vein deposits will continue to be an important source of valuable minerals. Productivity per manshift is not keeping pace with operating costs. Increased mechanization of stoping operations must be obtained to create greater productivity at a reduced cost per ton. This application of mechanization may be to either present methods or to newly developed concepts. The total mine unit operations will be effected by increased productivity. Two approaches to increasing the mechanization of narrow vein stoping were studied with the intention of increasing stope productivity and decreasing stoping costs. A method of bringing efficient rubber-tired equipment into narrow cut and fill stopes was designed. It proposes to provide stope access by way of a ramp constructed on the stope fill. Impact breaking equipment was studied and specific applications proposed.

The performance of RETIMET metal foam as a flame arrester on explosion-proof enclosures was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines both in laboratory tests and at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) Approval and Certification Center, Triadelphia, WV. The objective of this research was to develop a permissible pressure vent for use on lightweight, vented, explosion-proof enclosures. In laboratory tests, four grades of RETIMET, a stainless steel foam material, were evaluated: (1) 45 NC-7, (2) 45 NC-13, (3) 80 NC-7, and (4) 80 NC-13. Explosive gas mixtures were prepared by a dynamic flow system. Ignition was by a low-voltage arc. Each grade of RETIMET metal foam successfully arrested the flame front in all methane-air tests. To evaluate RETIMET metal foam on large, commercial size enclosures,a multi compartmented enclosure was designed and tested in MSHA's explosion gallery in Triadelphia, WV. Extensive explosion testing revealed that a minimum vent-area-to-enclosure-volume ratio of 11.33 in2/ft3 is required to keep internal pressure rises below 3 psig. The RETIMET metal foam functioned satisfactorily in all tests as evidenced by the absence of external ignitions.

INTRODUCTION In the USA regulatory agencies have adopted standards which limit the allowable concentration of ore dust in underground uranium mines. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value for silica which has been incorporated by reference in federal regulations (30 CFR 57, 1980). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) imposes a limit for unprocessed uranium ore dust for reducing the exposure to radioactive materials from inhalation (10 CFR 20, 1980). We have been unable to trace the origin of the NRC standard. Recently the ICRP has published recommendations concerning limits for intakes of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979). We have used the ICRP methodology to compute the dose equivalent commitment to lung and bone from inhalation of insoluble ore dust particles. These values were used to derive air concentrations which would provide an acceptable risk for induction of cancer from occupational exposure. Results indicate that the new ICRP recommendations are more restrictive than the present NRC standard for radioactivity. The maximum allowable dust load in a uranium mine will depend on both the concentration of silica (% Si02) and the amount of radioactivity (% U308). We have combined these standards assuming complete independence of biological hazard to establish boundary conditions for which either silica or radioactivity is the dominating factor. Based on these results we present suggestions for analysis of ore dust to insure compliance with regulatory agencies. SILICA STANDARDS Silicosis, fibrotic lung disease produced by crystalline silica, was one of the earliest forms of occupational disease to be recognized. The pulmonary lesions caused by silica, silicotic nodules, consist of concentrically arranged bundles of collagen fibers. Fusion of these nodules results in progressive massive fibrosis causing alveolar changes which decrease ventillation and blood flow in the lungs. The current Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral dusts is based on the concentration of free silica. The standard is expressed in three forms: (1) Particle count standard: TLV (mppcf) = 300/(% Si02 + 10) (mppcf = million particles per cubic foot) (2) Respirable dust mass standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 10/(% respirable Si02 + 2) (3) Total dust standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 30/(% Si02 + 3) The most commonly used form is the respirable mass standard. These curent values for silica are based primarily on epidemilogical studies of Vermont granite workers and other occupationally exposed workers. In the Vermont study no cases of silicosis were seen in individuals employed after dust control measures were initiated and whose subsequent exposure averaged less than 5 mppcf. The free silica concentration in the airborne dust to which these workers were exposed averaged 25%. A concentration of 10 mppcf of granite dust is considered equivalent to 0.1 mg/m3 quartz. The current respirable mass standard allows a maximum silica concentration of 0.1 mg/m3. NIOSH (1974) has recommended a reduction in the current TLV for respirable silica to 0.05 mg/m3 Si02. As with radiation standards, the TLV for mineral dusts is an upper limit for time weighted average exposure. It is recommended that dust concentrations be maintained as far below the TLV as current practices permit. RADIATION STANDARDS The present concentration limit for airborne natural uranium in ore dust prior to chemical separation is 75 µg of uranium per m3 of air ( 10 CFR 20, 1980) . This corresponds to 1.85 Bq/m3 (50 pCi/m3 ) of natural uranium, U-238, U-235 and U-234 and is equivalent to 3.7 Bq/m3 (100 pCi/m3 ) of gross alpha activity with radioactive equilibrium between the long-lived alpha progeny through Ra-226. The origin or basis for this standard is not known, but it presumably includes both chemical toxicity and risk from somatic radiation injury. Recently the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977) has published recommendations concerning the objectives and criteria for limiting radiation exposures. This was followed b y a revision of the limits for intake of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979; ICRP, 1980). The previous compilation of limits for internal emitters was published by ICRP Committee II in 1959 (ICRP, 1959). "The average heat requirement per barrel of crude refined in the United States rose from 579,000 B. t. u. in 1940 to 584,000 B. t. u. in 1941. This marked the second successive year in which there was an apparent loss in fuel efficiency at refineries. This ""loss"" took place despite an increase in crude runs, which used to be an invariable indicator of a lower average.Probably the chief factor in the increased heat requirement in 1941 was the gain in the over-all gasoline yield from 43.1 percent in 1940 to 44.2 percent in 1941. Possibly another important factor was the further use of obsolete equipment to increase throughput.The refiners used more of all kinds of fuel excapt coke in 1941 than in 1940. However, the only fuels which increased materially in relative importance were refinery gas, which contributed 51.6 percent of the total heat units in 1941 compared with 50.7 percent in 1940, and natural gas, the share of which rose from 17.1 percent in 1940 to 18.0 percent in 1941. The changes in the percentages for the other fuels were as follows: Oil decreased from 25.7 to 24.1 percent; acid sludge fell from 2.7 to 2.5; coal remained at 3.4 percent; and coke (including steam) fell from 0.5 to 0.4 percent.New records for fuel efficiency were set in all three of the districts east of the Mississippi, namely, East Coast, Appalachian, and Indiana, Illi¬nois, etc. All the ether districts reported higher average fuel requirements in 1941, except the Louisiana Gulf and Arkansas-Louisiana inland.Since the year of the first statistics, the refiners have steadily increased their purchases of electricity. In 1941 total purchases were 1,862,996,000 kilowatt-hours, or 11 percent more than in 1940."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects world-wide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

History The Con-Rycon mine is situated in the Yellowknife mining district, North West Territories, 608 air miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The earliest reported discovery of gold in the area was made in 1898 but no extensive exploration occurred until 1928. The birth of Yellowknife as a mining community took place in 1934 with the staking of the Rich group and subsequent shipping of 16 tons of high grade ore. The Giant group was also among the claims staked in 1934, and later staking showed a tendency to close the gap between these two properties. In the fall of 1935, the A.Y.E. claims, situated south of the Giant group, were staked to cover a discovery of the Geological Survey of Canada and, after general release of the Survey's information, the adjoining ground was staked. These claims included the Con, Negus, Meg, and Kam groups. In 1936 four lapsed claims were re-staked as the P and G group and later acquired by Rycon Mines, Limited, controlled by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The Con and various adjacent groups owned by Cominco are now operated with the Rycon under one management. Surface trenching on the Con property started in 1936 and, during the fall and winter of 1936-37, a 60- foot 5 ft. by 9 ft. inclined prospect shaft was sunk. The encouragement provided by the shaft and diamond drilling in 1937 led to the decision to establish a mining plant, and in August, 1938, the 100-ton cyanide mill produced its first brick- the first gold brick poured in the history of the North West Territories. In November, 1938, the mill was enlarged to a 175-ton capacity and operated at this rate until 1941, when refractory ore was encountered. This situation was met by the installation of flotation and roasting units and, at the same time, the milling capacity was increased to 300 tons daily. Labour shortages and Government restrictions forced a reduction of output and in 1943 milling was suspended while mine development continued on a reduced scale throughout the war years. The present full-scale of operations was resumed in 1946 and the total production to the end of 1948 amounted to 288,853 oz. gold and 72,347 oz. silver.

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. The experimental data are presented in the form of an equilibrium diagram that aids the understanding of the conditions associated with the thermal decomposition of ammines

During the past decade, a general awareness of the need for and subsequent development of increased safety in United States coal mines has taken place. Government and industry alike were stimulated into accelerating their actions through unacceptable accident statistics and costs (in terms of human misery dollar values). Those of us who work in the United States coal industry are aware of the development of governmental controls on nine safety. Both Federal and State regulations have placed increased responsibility upon mine owners and operators to insure a safe working environment and to provide training for miners. No other industrial group of workers has received such attention or, in our opinion, deserves it more.

The reverse martensitic transfomzation (i.e., the conversion of martensite to austenite on heating) was investigated in Fe-Ni alloys containing 30.5 to 33.5 wt pct Ni. The reversed austenite was found to be sufficiently distorted to exhibit marked differences in mechanical properties and to undergo recovery and re crystallization on further heating. In particular, the yield strength of the reversed austenite was as much as 2.5 times higher than that of the virgin austenite: with five cycles of the direct and reverse martensitic transformation, the yield strength was 2.6 times higher. There was an accompanying decrease in strain-hardening capacity and in stable ductility or uniform elongation. The recrystallization was observed to follow sigmoidal kinetics, but was characterized by an abnormal1y large temperature dependence which was evidently due to carbon segregation at the migrating grain boundaries. Upon recrystallization, the strength Properties reverted to those of the virgin austenite, but the ductility did not fully recover until the annealing temperature was further raised to dissipate the carbon segregation at the grain boundaries. The transformation of reversed austenite to produce second-generation martensite resulted in an unusually imperfect structure, thereby leaditg to additional strengthening. Horlleuer, the martensitic phase was much less responsive in this respect than was the austenite. MOST martensitic transformations are capable of undergoing a reverse transformation back to the austenitic phase on heating.&apos; This reaction, like the direct transformation to martensite on cooling, is usually athermal. In analogy with the Ms andMf temperatures for the martensitic transformation (where M, > Mf), the reverse transformation is characterized by the As andAf temperatures (where As<Af). It is well-known that the finish (Af) of the martensite-to-austenite reaction on heating may occur at a temperature where austenite is not stable relative to other phases in the equilibrium diagram.&apos; Reverse martensitic transformations have been found to influence the properties of the parent austenitic phase in a number of ferrous alloys. The austenite thus produced after one or more reversals is significantly altered in strength, microstruc-ture, diffusivity, and annealing characteristics compared to well-annealed, virgin austenite. The first detailed observations of such phenomena were made by Wasserman3 on an Fe-30 wt pct alloy. He found that the reversed austenite (i.e., austenite formed by the reverse martensitic transformation) was much stronger than the original austenite, and the second-generation martensite (i.e., martensite produced from the reversed austenite) was somewhat stronger than the first-generation martensite. On heating the reversed austenite, recrystallization occurred in a manner similar to that of a cold-worked metal; the Laue spots sharpened and the strength decreased.4 In recent years, Russian workers have shown considerable interest in these reverse martensitic transformations. Most of such investigations5-10 have been concerned with the stabilization of reversed austenite relative to subsequent martensitic transformation, and because of its unusual nature, this phenomenon will be discussed in detail elsewhere." On the other hand, the annealing behavior of reversed austenite and the attendant variation in properties have received little attention beyond the experiments of Wasserman.3,4 Gridnev eta1.,8 in one of the few such studies. followed the hardness change of reversed austenite as a function of time at three annealing temperatures. The marked strengthening of austenite achieved by the reverse martensitic transformation has been referred to as "transformation strengthening" by Wasserman3,4 and as "phase hardening" by Malyshev et a1.7,9,10 to differentiate it from hardening produced by cold working. Both groups of investigators noted that further strengthening of the austenite could be attained by repeated or cyclic transformations, but the first cycle resulted in the most pronounced effect. Evidence of the altered microstructure of reversed austenite has been reported by Maximova and Nikonorova6 and by Edmonson and KO.12 The former found that reversed austenite was much more sensitive to etching than the original austenite, and the latter authors observed a (&apos;ghost" structure resembling martensite in certain areas of the reversed austenite. The objective of this research was to establish the relationship between production, consumption and energy cost in the surface mining of bituminous coal. Specific energy sources such as diesel, gasoline, electricity, explosives and bituminous coal were considered in this study. Gain in net energy, proportion of the cost of energy consumption and total energy cost relative to total revenue of extracted coal were determined, and a new energy efficiency index and a new energy-cost ratio were established. A case study on an operating surface coal mine was carried out to demonstrate the application of the newly developed method. The results of this study can be used by the mine operators in establishing strategies for the optimization of energy production and consumption, and for reducing the cost of bituminous coal extraction.

Into this tumultuous twentieth century, every second, two new babies are born. This is 5,412 per hour, and 130,000 per day. Relentlessly, consistently, alarmingly, they add to the more than three billion human beings who already inhabit the earth. Every tick of tier clock brings with it a problem child, the problem of another mouth to feed, another body to clothe, another human being for whom to provide. On the other hand, medical science has achieved a postponement of death, considerably past the period of a few years ago. Thus, life expectancy has been increased and world population has increased accordingly. Darwin (4) writing in 1962, suggests "It is curious how long the world is taking to perceive that we are living in what is a fantastically abnormal period of history, and one which must inevitably end soon, The first warning note of a possible population explosion was given by Malthus in 1799". He suggested that population increases geometrical while production increases only arithmetically and that soon we would not be able to feed the rapidly increasing population.

The U.S, Bureau of Mines is conducting a four-year (1987-1990) study to assess the mineral resources and mineral development potential of the Valdez Creek Mining District in southcentral Alaska. This study is part of the Bureau&apos;s ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report summarizes the Bureau&apos;s site specific evaluations of two areas (Tyone and Peters Creek) of the district that were investigated to determine the bedrock sources of gold and PCM in the alluvial gravel of both areas. In the Tyone Creek area, grains of gold (up to 0.0212 oz/yd3) and platinum group minerals (PCM) were recovered from alluvium and weathered conglomerate of the Jurassic Naknek Formation and Tertiary age using placer sampling techniques, Platinum and palladium were detected in the heavy mineral concentrates recovered from placer sampling the alluvium, and Naknek Formation and Tertiary conglomerates. In the Peters Creek area, grains of gold (up to 0.014 oz/yd3) were recovered from the alluvium and Tertiary Sterling Formation conglomerate. The Bureau&apos;s evaluations indicated that drainage basins containing conglomerate are the most favorable targets for placer gold and PGM exploration; and Tertiary conglomerate represents a high volume, low grade gold resource.
