"INCO LIMITED'S Shebandowan Mine and Mill is located in a scenic tourist and cottage area near the western tip of Lower Shebandowan Lake, approximately 90 Km west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. This nicely designed complex is a positive indication that mining operations can co-exist in harmony within the natural environment.The Shebandowan complex processed nickel-copper ore from 1973 to 1985, inclusive, after which operations were shut down.In late 1988, INCO LIMITED decided to place the Shebandowan complex back into operation, under contract, to mine and mill the remainder of the ore body, according to their specifications. MaclSAAC'S EXPLORATIONS was the successful bidder for the project. Following preliminary rehabilitation, operations were re-activated in late March, 1989. The ore mined to date is of a moderately lower nickel grade than the majority of previous years. However, a higher tonnage rate, combined with improved nickel recoveries, has contributed to a viable operation.A series of mill operating and equipment modifications has enabled MaclSAAC EXPLORATIONS to achieve the quality and grade of nickel-copper concentrates specified, and at the same time, expand mill tonnage throughput while attaining increased nickel recovenes."

The systems Ti-Crand Ti-Vhave been reinvesti-gated in the region up to 40 wt pct alloying addition using both conventional and rapid quenching techniques. The Ti-Cr eutectoid temperature was determined to be at 667° & 10° C and 14.5 wt pct Cr. The solubility of the Cr in a Ti was found to be less than 1 pctat 700"C. The P transus of the Ti-V system was found to be depressed to 510°C at 40 wt pct V and the solubility of V in a Ti was found to be less than 2 wt pct at 700°C. Investigation by a. d. McQuillan1-3and m. k. McQuillan4 on the systems Ti-Co, Ti-Cr, Ti-Cu, Ti-Fe, Ti-Mn, Ti-Ni, and Ti-V has cast doubt as to the position of the ß/a + ß boundaries in many of these systems. Their investigations were carried out using hydrogen pressure and/or rapid quenching experiments, as opposed to the conventional quartz capsule techniques employed by most other investigator.'" By these methods, the ß/a + ß boundary was found to be lower than that obtained by conventional techniques in all except the Ti-Fe system. In the latter, the ß/a + ß boundary was essentially the same as the boundary obtained by conventional technique.7' On the basis of rapid quenching results in the Ti-Cr system, M. K. McQuillan4 placed the eutectoid temperature below 550°C whereas other investigations using conventional techniques had placed the eutectoid variously as between 650' and 700°C,5 between 675' and 700°C,6 between 650" and 675°C,7 at 670°C,8 and above 625"C.la9l3 In order to check these results, a reinvestigation of four of the systems was undertaken using both conventional and rapid-quenching techniques. The Ti-Fe and Ti-Mn systems will be dealt with in anoth er paper, with only the Ti-Cr and Ti-V systems being discussed here. This is one of a series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods and costs at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized' tat publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no mis-understanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Dependendo da severidade da conformação durante o processo de estampagem, pode ocorrer dano à camada de revestimento. Para contornar esse problema, vários métodos de tratamento da superfície do revestimento para lubrificação têm sido desenvolvidos, como, por exemplo, o Tratamento L, que é um filme a base de P-Mn patenteado pela Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation e disponibilizado no Brasil pela Unigal Usiminas. Como, após a estampagem, o aço é submetido a vários processos até a obtenção do produto final, além de apresentar uma boa lubricidade é essencial que o Tratamento L não interfira nessas etapas seqüentes. Nesse trabalho, foi avaliada a sua influência nos pré-tratamentos, na pintura e resistência à corrosão de um aço galvanizado a quente, com as ligas Zn-Fe (GA), cujas amostras foram pintadas em uma montadora após os pré-tratamentos de fosfatização e a base de óxido de zircônio e, em seguida, avaliadas por meio de testes acelerados cíclicos e não acelerados de corrosão. Foi verificado que o Tratamento L não interfere nas etapas de pré-tratamentos, pintura e nem na resistência à corrosão do aço, o que o habilita como um possível tratamento a ser utilizado com o intuito de melhorar a estampabilidade do aço.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 73,010 acres of the 76,480-acre Lower Owyhee Canyon Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-110) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 8 miles north of Rome. There are approximately 7.7 million tons of subeconomic zeolite (heulandite and/or clinoptilolite) resources with ammonia ion exchange capacities as high as 1.75 milliequivalents per gram in the Chalk Basin-Lambert Rocks area. The bed is 25 ft thick with less than 100 feet of overburden. This resource probably will not be mined in the foreseeable future.

The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

TRENDS IN MINE FINANCE Reviewing historical trends may help in dealing with future funding strategies. The first trend is the increase in the use of debt to fund corporate America. Surprisingly, when comparing that with other corporates in the global marketplace, the U.S. does not look too poorly. Japanese, in particular, but also German companies, are much more leveraged than their U.S. counterparts. Note that in Japan and Germany the government and the consumer have shown substantial restraints when it comes to credit. Not so in the U.S. where the savings rate (4%) is much lower than that in Japan (20%) and in Germany (14%). As a result, the cost of leverage is substantially lower in Japan and in Germany than in the U.S. Lower debt costs in these countries allows one to obtain more of it for the same price. The close relationships between financial institutions, corporations and governments in Japan and Germany also make the risk of leverage more bearable and understandable. Also note that interest rate volatility in these countries is more subdued. The investor base in common stock is also changing. Private pension funds have been net sellers of equities during the last few years while public pension funds have been net buyers. Individuals are basically out of the market. It is estimated that over $330 billion of equity was retired in the U.S. through 1986-1988. The reasons are well known: restructurings, buy-backs, takeovers, mergers, and buy-outs. This de-equitization is likely to continue as the cost of equity capital is higher than the cost of debt capital, even on a before-tax basis. Because there has been no market for equity since October 19, 1987, junk bonds have replaced equity capital in the corporate finance structure. The non-investor-grade borrower has access to the public markets through high-yielding debt securities that often look like senior equity. Deregulation has also provided 24-hour markets; securitization can now liquify assets that before were rusting on balance sheets; information processing and communication tools give facts that are instantaneously available, creating the need for products to cover risk and exposures unknown before the start of the information and technology explosion. Thus we now have swaps, options, futures, options on futures, caps, as well as program trading, portfolio insurance, index funds, etc. Globalization will be unstoppable. Today's environment demands it. Corporations are now global competitors, even though they may have never shipped a product off-shore. Boundaries are disappearing and impediments have been removed. Stocks can be issued in a global offering with distribution in all major financial centers of the world. The high leverage of Japanese companies has made common stocks very scarce, which with the high savings rate, makes equity capital inexpensive in Japan. If markets were perfect everyone would issue stock in Tokyo and buy it back in New York. This would certainly stop the bleeding on the balance of payments. With the deficit balance of payments in America, it is no surprise that the cost of money is expensive here. The risk-return relationship on U.S. equity is not favorable enough to appeal to Japanese equity investors. The Tokyo-market, helped by a stronger yen, surpassed New York as the most important equity market in the world. The question is, will the Tokyo market hold up when Japanese domestic consumption increases at the expense of savings? In the U.S. debt markets, the plain vanilla debenture is making a comeback after a period of absence. Commercial paper has replaced short term bank borrowings for working capital funding by larger corporations. Hydraulic mining has been practiced in the United States since 1852 and many mineral commodities, such as gilsonite, phosphates, lead-zinc, silver ores and St. Peter Sandstone can be mined in this manner. In 1958, the U. S. Bureau of Mines initiated research into the mining of coal using these techniques.1-4 These early investigations were conducted in the 5000 psi pressure range. The large nozzle diameters used in this pressure range produced extremely high flow rates which created visibility problems at the coal face, and required removal of large amounts of water from the mining area. Besides, the production rates were not much better than with mechanical methods. This indicated that with higher pressures the water quantities might be reduced using the same or higher horsepowers but enhanced breakage. For this reason intensive investigation in material removal using fine water jets at extremely high pressures (50,000 psi to 100,000 psi) has been undertaken. This was not the entire reason for this contract from the Bureau of Mines, however. The contract objective is outlined later. IIT Research Institute has done pioneering work in high pressure jet development in the United States.5-8 Similar schemes have been investigated abroad. 9-13 Hydraulic mining of coal at relatively low pressures is successfully being done in the Soviet Union, Japan, Canada, and most recently, in Germany.

The distribution ratios of Ag, Pb, As, Sb and Bi for the Cu2S-FeS or Ni3S2-FeS matte I FeOx-SiOl, FeOx-Si02-CaO or FeOx-CaO slag equilibration in a MgO crucible were determined experimentally at 1523 ~1573K under controlled partial pressures of S2 and 02 at given PS02 of 10.1,50.7 and 101.3 kPa(O.I, 0.5 and I atm), and the observed dependency of distribution ratio on the matte grade, S02 pressure and slag basicity were analyzed on the basis of thermodynamics.

"2507 super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) has been widely applied in a marine environment, attributing to its excellent pitting corrosion resistance and mechanical properties which are particularly determined by the nitrogen precipitation behaviors and volume fraction of ferrite. In this paper, various cooling rates were obtained by applying four different moulds with the common gating system. By which the influence of cooling rates on nitrogen precipitation behaviors and the ferrite fraction in cast 2507 SDSS was comparatively investigated. The results showed that nitrogen porosity could easily precipitate in cast 2507 SDSS under standard atmospheric pressure. The number of nitrogen holes increased with decreasing the cooling rates, and the holes mainly distributed in three zones, i.e. the interface between the horizontal and vertical columnar grains, top vertical columnar grains and the final solidification region. Additionally, higher ferrite fraction was obtained with lower cooling rates.IntroductionDuplex stainless steels (DSS) have a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite (d) and aus-tenite (?). Due to the combined advantageous properties of d and ? phase, their application rapid-ly increased in industry [1, 2]. Super duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) is the third generation of du-plex stainless steels, of which the alloy elements Cr, Ni and N content are higher than the stand-ard 2205 DSS. Because it has high contents of alloy elements, the SDSS has better mechanical properties, and its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) reached a point 43. Hence SDSS has been used in petroleum chemical industry, the marine equipment and harsh corrosion environments [3]. SDSS contains ferrite stabilizing elements, such as Cr, Mo and Si, and austenite stabilizing elements like Ni, Mn and N [4]. Many researchers have studied the effects of these elements on the stabilization of d and ? phase and the ratio of the two phases. High nitrogen con-tent is another prominent feature of SDSS. Nitrogen addition to SDSS is very effective for improving its mechanical properties [5] and corrosion resistance [6], such as pitting resistance in NOx environment. To increase the nitrogen content in steels, a lot of work had been done. N. Nakamura and S. Takaki [7] examined the behavior of nitrogen absorption in Fe-23Cr alloy powder by sintering in nitrogen gas atmosphere, they found nitrogen content easily up to 1.0 wt. %. Using devised NH3 gas injection system, W. Park et al. [8] successfully produced austenitic Fe–23.5Cr alloys containing over 3 wt. % of nitrogen. Further-more, W.P. Tong et al. [9] stated that nitrogen percent was extraordinary high (about 10 wt. %) in pure iron plate. However, the above methods are difficult to be applied to large-scale industrial production."

In 1985, ZC Mines (now Pasminco South) had been unprofitable for some years due to a combination of high operating costs, low metal prices, low head grade and an aging and inadequate mining infrastructure. However, the resource of metal in the ground was still of world class, even after some 80 years of mining. A major study, which was to be of two years duration, was therefore commenced to establish a practical and profitable long term mining strategy and to cost the infrastructure options needed for its support and thus form the justification for a capital expenditure program to take the mine profitably into the 21st century and its second century of operation. This paper discusses the rationale behind the methodology adopted and the nature of the results achieved in one aspect of the study - the determination of the mineable resource and the relationship between the head grade/quantity of the economically mineable resource and the variables of cut-off grade, cost structure, annual production rate and metal prices/exchange rates. The basis of the study was the designing of some 5000 scopes to mine out the entire resource for a range of cut- off grades and the assembly of the detailed physical data thus obtained in a stope-by-stope data base for financial and other analysis. Those scopes which were shown to be economically mineable were then scheduled for two optimum annual production/cut-off grade/metal price combinations to provide life-of-mine cost and value of production cash flows.

"The Avon mica district of Latah County, Idaho, is situated on a heavily forested spur of the Thatuna Range at an average altitude of 4,000 feet. The nearest rail connection is at Avon, a small farming settlement 7 miles to the south. The main supply point is Moscow, Idaho, which is 35 miles by graveled and graded county roads from Avon.Discovery of mica-bearing pegmatites in 1885 was followed in 1888 by exploitation of several outcrop deposits. Although factual data are unavailable, past production appears to have been well in excess of $100,000. Recent production (September 191 to April 1945) amounted to 65,824.78 pounds of trimmed sheet mica and 33,294.17 pounds of punch mica having a total gross value of $434,298.The several properties of the district are variously owned by estates, individuals, and the State. When active, all wore under lease or sublease to individual operators.The deposits are in an area of pre-Cambrian schists adjacent to a small granitic outlier of the Idaho batholith. The pegmatites are nearly concordant in dip and strike to the foliation of the enclosing schists. The more persistent bodies are usually tabular, lenticular, or pegmatite. Individual dikes range in length from 10 feet or less to 300 feet.The recoverable crude mica content of the pegmatites ranges downward from a maximum of 115 pounds per ton of pegmatite mined. Material discarded in rifting and trimming operations further reduces recovery to a maximum of 5 pounds per ton -of pegmatite mined. The average recoverable sheet content of the 'recently operated .deposit is estimated at 2 pounds per ton of pegmatite -mined. Available data indicate that about 21 percent of the district's recent production of trimmed sheet mica has been ""Group A"" material suitable for exacting condenser requirements. A few of the dikes contain local concentrations of beryl.Reserves of the three known major deposits of the district are estimated at about 600 to 1,000 tons of combined ""indicated"" and ""inferred"" crude block mica. One of these deposits is inferred to contain between 150 and 450 tons of beryl.It is believed that those mica reserves are minable only under a cost-market price ratio similar to that established during 1943 and 1944. A small part of the reserves can be ""high-graded"" under the present price structure. Profitable recovery of the beryl would require a market price four to five times that paid in 1944.Preliminary examination of the Avon mica district was made by the Bureau of Mines in the summer and fall of 1942. A study of the Muscovite mine and a brief reconnaissance of the surrounding district led the Bureau to recommend that the district be explored by angle-dozer trenching."

The separation of enormous quantities of water produced with the oil in some West Texas fields necessitated the use of special equipment other than the regular lease tanks. Several methods were used with varying degrees of success. They include the water-trap, hay tank and gun barrel, gun barrel and settling tank, chemical and electrical-dehydration methods. The water trap which has been used extensively in the Hendricks field, and in some instances has been installed in the Yates field separates the water and. oil under high pressure before tile liquid and gas pass through the flow beam. The first trap was constructed and installed by the Southern Crude Oil Purchasing Co. in July, 1928. By July, 1929, approximately 300 traps were in use. Treating cut oil by running it through a hay tank was done quite extensively in the Roberts-Settles field, Howard and Glasscock Counties, Tex., and later the method was used in the Hendricks field. In July, 1931, there were 37 hay tanks in the Roberts-Settles field, treating the oil from 123 wells. The cut oil frequently was made acceptable to the pipe-line company by running it through the hay tank. In some instances, however, it was necessary to heat the oil, and occasionally both heat and chemicals were used before complete separation of the oil and water was obtained.

This final report reviews installation, maintenance and inspection of mine pager telephone installations. A Technical Handbook was developed and distributed. Certain commercial telephone test equipment was modified and a tone source and switching circuit were developed for use in the testing of mine pager phone systems. Descriptions are included of the modifications to a commercial test set and of a tone source/ switching unit.

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

Unfortunate occurrences resulting in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property by explosion, fire, and other mishaps during shaft sinking focused the attention of the Bureau of Mines on the need for safety standards For such operations. Information Circular 7810 was published to meet that need. The current revision updates and replaces IC 7810. Several States have some rules and regulations applicable to local conditions, and several Bureau publications (including some now out of print) cover the hazards that may be encountered in shaft sinking. Certain requirements of the Federal Mine Safety Code and Federal Coal Mine Safety Act may be applied, but there are no definite, uniform standards that will guide those desiring to sink a shaft safely and bring about uniform safety inspections.

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

Fission Uranium Corp.’s Triple R Uranium Deposit at its Patterson Lake South Project is located in northwest Saskatchewan in Canada’s Athabasca Basin. As part of pre-feasibility studies for the project a detailed metallurgical test program was completed to provide process design criteria. The testwork program encompassed preparation and analysis of test composites, comminution testing, uranium acid leaching, liquid-solid separation, solvent extraction of uranium, precipitation of uranium yellowcake products, tailings and effluent treatment, tailings physical and chemical characterization, and environmental testing of prepared tailings, as well as investigations of gold and silver recovery from the mineralization. The paper provides mineralogical information, testwork methodologies and test results which were used to arrive at process design criteria and the selection of the process flowsheet for the project.
