"One of the functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to investigate the ability of electrical mining equipment to operate in a gassy mine without danger of igniting explosive atmospheres. To accomplish this purpose, tests are made in which mixtures of gas and air are ignited in the equipment while it is surrounded by explosive atmospheres of the same composition. In such tests, records of pressures developed by the internal ex-plosions are obtained and observations are made of any flames, sparks, or smoke which may issue from bearings and joints. Occasionally the explosion pressures in a mining machine rheostat or a compartment of some other machine reach a value which is judged to be excessive or abnormal.A number of factors are known to influence the explosion pressures, and both German and. British investigators have irate extensive research on their effects. Much of this work had been done with artificial compartment which certain conditions could c held, constant while others were being varied. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has not made any research on a scale to compare with that of the British or German investigators; however, special studies have been necessary from time to time to determine the cause and remedy for high pressures obtained in the routine test of some piece of mining machinery. Thus it has been possible to verify some of tee theories established on a purely experimental oasis by practical tests of machines as actually built for mine use.Some of the factors determined the pressure that will result when an explosive mixture in a compartment or connected compartment is ignited are: (1) The volume of explosive mixture ignited, (2) the percentage of as in the mixture, (3) the amount of coal-dust in the compartment or compartments, (4) the degree of movement or turbulence of the mixture at the time of ignition, (6) tightness of the joints and bearings, (6) the size of opening between, compartments, (7) the distance between the point of ignition and openings, and (8) the cooling, effect of surfaces and of material inclosed in the compartments."

The Technology Application Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Liaison Program, is studying the use of Landsat data for the monitoring of coal surface mine reclamation activities. Landsat may provide sufficient information to reduce the number of on-site inspections now required. The focus of the project has been the Navajo Coal Mine located in north- western New Mexico and operated by Utah International, Inc. On October 15, 1977, a field team recorded spectral measurements at the mine during the time of Landsat's overpass and a corresponding aerial photographic flight. Training sets were selected from the ground and aircraft data representing vegetated, graded, ungraded and natural environments. A supervised classification of the data was performed by the Stanford University Remote Sensing Laboratory then correlated to aerial photos and mine maps. The results, to date, have been very encouraging.

The Oklahoma City Wilcox sand, discovered on March 26, 1930, has produced 394 million barrels of crude oil and 819 billion cubic feet of natural gas as of July I, 1941. The 100,000-bbl. wells, pressures of 2600 lb. per sq. in., and flows of "Wilcox" sand caused exciting moments in the early life of the field. Today the reservoir is substantially at atmospheric pressure and produccs 75,000 bbl. of crude oil daily through 466 pumping wells. Early estimates of the initial crude-oil content of the "Wilcox" sand1 indicated that about 600 million barrels of crude oil would remain after the pumping wells ceased to produce economically. The Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association was organized in March 1939, to study the possibilities of recovering a portion of this oil. Only a very brief summary of the information available can be presented in a paper of this nature. Some simplifications and generalizations are necessary to give the over-all picture in SO short a space and statements made may not apply to a specific well or small area. Since the area under consideration by the Association is that north of the south line of section 22-11-3, some information will be presented for areas A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 and part of 4 of Fig. 2, and some will be for the entire Wilcox zone west of the fault. This paper is essentially an abstract of an engineering report made by A. D. Small, B. T. Murphree, M. C. Sons and the author for the Oklahoma City Wilcox Secondary Recovery Association on Sept. 5, 1940. Some information is taken from a report to the Association by C. V. Sidwell on March I, 1940, and some data are from a recent report by A. D. Small. It gives a brief history of the Wilcox zone, estimates of the initial oil contents of the reservoir, present conditions in the reservoir, and probable results from several programs of "secondary recovery." History of Wilcox Zone The Wilcox sand lies on the flank of the general structure, as shown by cross section of Fig. I2,3,4 and areal map of Fig. 2. The sand is of Ordovician age and is composed of well assorted, rounded sand grains with no apparent cementing material. The loose texture of the sand is shown by the enormous quantities of sand production from the wells and from the soft cores. The productive sand varies from zero thickness on the east to 220 ft. maximum and to zero thickness on the west because of water. The development of the pool4 as dependent upon drilling restrictions within the city limits, which accounts for the spacing of drilling operations listed in Table I by years. In 1931, areas I through 7 of Fig. 2 were open for drilling with the exception of some west-edge properties, and all wells drilled before Feb. I, 1935, were in this portion of the field. Nearly all wells drilled from 1933 to 1037 were in areas A, B and C. Since 1939, the newly drilled wells have gradually enlarged the producing area toward the west in the northern portion.

IN previous workif2 we have shown that the steady state cyclic stress response of pure copper tested in the low cycle fatigue range was determined only by the plastic strain amplitude and the test temperature. hus, copper, at any given temperature, has a unique cyclic stress-strain curve independent of prior history. Cu-7.5 wt pct Al, however, showed a stress response for a given plastic strain amplitude and temperature which depended sensitively on prior history. From this work we predicted that all wavy slip mode materials, typified by copper, would have a unique cyclic stress-strain curve; whereas all planar slip mode materials, typified by Cu-7.5 pct Al, would not. This prediction has now been tested for a number of materials of widely varying crystal structure and slip character. Wavy slip mode materials studied include: Fe. Al, Cd, disordered FeCo-V, and Cu-3 pct Co (quenched and aged). Planar slip mode materials investigated include: Fe-3 pct Si, ordered FeCo-V, disordered Ni3Mn, ordered Ni3Mn, and Zn. The treatment and properties of these materials are listed in Table I. Cyclic stress-strain curves were determined by controlled plastic strain tests (see Ref. 1 for details) at room temperature for all materials in both the initially annealed and cold worked conditions. The results obtained for iron and Fe-3 pct Si are typical of wavy and planar slip mode materials, respectively. The cyclic stress-strain curves for these materials are shown in Fig. 1 and it can be seen that iron has a unique cyclic stress strain curve while Fe-3 pct Si does not. Aluminum, Cu-3 pct Co, and disordered FeCo-V showed a behavior like that for iron, while Ni3Mn in both the disordered and ordered condition behaved in the same manner as Fe-3 pct Si. Because of the' situation in Europe during the summer of 1939, with the possibility of war and consequent curtailment or loss of supplies of tin to the United States, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of domestic tin resources. This was permitted by the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, which authorized investigation of possible domestic resources of strategic minerals necessary in a national emergency. The minerals selected were in short supply, and the United States depended almost entirely on imports to meet normal requirements. The Black Hills of South Dakota were selected for investigation as one possible source of tin because of the occurrence of the mineral there has been known since 1876, although production had never been important. The Tinton area, in the northern part of the Hills, had received the most attention and contained some minor indicated and inferred tin deposits.

After several years of laboratory and field evaluations, it has been established that each frother has its own unique relationship among bubble size reduction, gas hold-up increase, froth stabilization and frother concentration. It has been shown that a frother?s hydrodynamic properties can be characterized using the relationship between the froth zone property froth height and the pulp zone property gas hold-up. The relationship is established in a bubble column run at a given air rate over a range of frother concentration. The use of relationships in frother selection and plant diagnostics is illustrated in a series of plant case studies.

"The influence of Fe, Mn, Cu and Mg alloying additions, Sr modification and grain refinement on the microstructure of as-cast and solution heat-treated Al-10.8% Si alloys was investigated using optical microscopy and EPMA techniques. The results showed that the modification effect of Sr diminished with increasing Cu and Mg additions, due to Sr-Cu-Mg interactions. Strontium caused segregation of AlzCu in areas away from eutectic Si regions, and altered the precipitation sequence of the a-Ah5(Fe,Mn)3Siz iron intermetallic from post-dendritic to pre-dendritic, with the phase observed within the a-Al dendrites. Depending upon the alloy Fe and Mn content, a coarser variation (""sludge"") of the a-Fe phase occurred, in the form of polyhedral shaped particles. The AhCu phase dissolved almost completely during solution heat treatment, while Al5Cu2Mg8Si6, sludge, and a-Aln(Fe,Mn)3Siz phases persisted in all alloys, particularly at high Mg and Fe levels. The f3-Al5(Fe,Mn)Si phase dissolved partially in Sr-modified alloys, the dissolution becoming more pronounced after solution heat treatment."

"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency has been widely used by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which follows. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided. The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies. Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards that have adverse effects on the mine workers. The very nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources including autocompression, equipment, and heat from strata. This study investigated the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort ofmineworkers who are exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles have been considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the thermal comfort of workers. To investigate the impact of the clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an 8-h shift. Parametric analyses were subsequently performed using an already developed thermal comfort model using MATLAB software. The results demonstrate that clothing insulation has a significant effect on the thermal comfort of mine workers. Increase in the clothing insulation decreases the maximum allowable exposure time of mine workers. This is especially true for the new and non-acclimated workers. Since acclimatized workers can tolerate a higher level of the dehydration and are capable of losing more water by sweat per shift, the maximum allowable exposure time for the acclimated workers are higher than non-acclimated workers. These analyses have shown that acclimated workers can have more continuous work per shift compared with non-acclimated workers. For example, in an environmental condition with clothing that a nonacclimated worker cannot work more than 5 h, an acclimated worker can work a full 8-h shift.

Planning for a project does not start with the announcement of the approval for a project. Planning actually begins when the project is only a prospect and it involves the years of experience of many people because their expertise influences the final decisions. In partial anticipation of the Pinto Valley project, as well as a search for improvement in the Copper Cities operation, two projects were undertaken. The first project was to substitute one 26" cyclone for three 20? cyclones in the single stage grinding circuit. The second project was to replace the Hunt air flotation cells with 300 cubic foot mechanical cells. The 300 cubic foot cells were just being introduced, consequently two types of cells were selected for testing. The results from both projects influenced the decisions on equipment for the Pinto Valley project.

Bowie Resources, LLC (Bowie) has been using the Stability Mapping System (SMS) developed by Dr. Keith Heasley, West Virginia University, since 2005. Seven three-entry longwall gateroads, four longwall panels and a five-entry set of mains have been mined in two different seams in areas originally analyzed with the SMS. This paper compares predictions of mining conditions based on the SMS with actual mining conditions. Specific comparisons include longwall and continuous miner (CM) productivity, longwall tailgate response and support and CM roof bolting requirements. The paper also discusses current thoughts at Bowie on the use of different weighting factors for CM development, longwall face conditions and longwall tailgate support requirements.

As part of the Demand Evaluation Program of the Bureau of Mines to determine future needs for minerals, a study was instituted to develop and describe a methodology for approaching the problem of substitution between mineral commodities and between mineral commodities and other materials. The report comprises three sections: A review of general factors relative to substitution, a case study of the effect of substitution on zinc die-casting markets in recent years, and a general methodology for reviewing materials substitution with specific emphasis derived from reviewing substitution in the domestic zinc die-casting markets.

Between 1977 and 1984, No. 26 Colliery, at Glace Bay in the Sydney Coalfield, suffered from a series of 37 rock/gas outbursts. These events were characterized by the complete pulverization of a sandstone which was propelled into the mine roadway and an associated release of methane gas. The events began to appear at a depth of 700 m and increased in intensity and damage to the excavation as the mining depth increased. At the time of the closure of No. 26 Colliery (as a result of an unrelated fire), these outbursts were the subject of intensive investigation. Although No. 26 is now closed, there is concern that similar events could appear at Phalen Colliery where current development work is proceeding at a depth close to the 700 m threshold. Past investigations into rock/gas outbursts included studies of in situ stresses, the simulation of outburst events in the laboratory, investigations into the potential for destressing an& degassing of problem sandstone and the development of numerical models to assist in the design of openings in outburst prone ground. However, despite this work, methods of predicting outburst conditions are presently limited to examination of probe hole cores for core discing, and methods of working under such conditions are limited to boring and firing and using volley firing techniques to initiate any outbursts while workers are safely out of the heading. During this investigation of worldwide occurrences of this phenomena, literature obtained suggested that outbursts might generate microseismic precursors. An intrinsically safe (IS) microseismic monitoring system was designed and developed based on CANMET's rockburst monitoring system currently in use in hardrock mines, and installed in a development roadway at the deepest extent of the Phalen Colliery. The system will record microseismic activity associated with development work to try to identify characteristic precursors of outburst-prone conditions. This paper describes the steps taken to identify a microseismic system suitable for use at Phalen colliery, of which part of the requirement was that it be IS and approved for use in the Sydney Coalfield. The modifications to the selected system are described, along with its capabilities and the preliminary results of its performance over the first few months of use.

In this investigation, different mixtures of realgar and orpiment particles were floated in a laboratory batch flotation cell and multivariate image analysis was used to estimate the arsenic content in the froths. The analysis was based on the froth colour, as well as extraction of three groups of textural features, namely those based on grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCMs), wavelets and local binary patterns (LBPs). Collectively, these features provided better information on the arsenic content of the froths than any one of the individual groups of features. Partial least squares models could explain approximately 78% of the variance in the arsenic by using all the features combined. The colour content, particularly the green component in the red-green-blue (RGB) features, provided almost as much information as each of the three sets of texture-base features individually.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Galis Mfg. Co. roof drill. The instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine on roof drill, model 300, and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other roof drills with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other roof drills and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for nearly 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In recent years, the number of some annual ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, the twin disasters at Crandall Canyon in 2007, in which nine miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990s, these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents since 2005. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery, where there has been just one fatal incident since 2005. On the other hand, more than 300 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting and inside control roof bolters could reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety.

Radon emanation rates. J. and compositions of materials from the Canadian Certified Reference Materials Project (CCRMP) indicate that the fraction of the Rn produced that escapes, E, is usually 1% to 8% and the 238U decay chain is nearly in secular equilibrium. For some Chinese ore standards, E values are higher than f or the CCRMP materials. Standard ore tailings have 2/oPb concentrations higher than expected from their 226Ra concentrations and Rn escape rates (12 - 34%) . Biological materials have E ˜100%, their ash E ˜0%. Pelletizing ore powders at 20 000 lb/in2 reduces J by only 20 - 40% but only 2% of Rn escapes from pressed Li2B4O7 pellets and 0.01 - 0.04% from fused Na2B4O7 or Li2B4O7 discs. Large, difficult-to-explain random variations in J are observed in some situations but several highly reproducible ways of measuring emanation rates have been found.

"A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shares and make future expenditures on the property.The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shares by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shares are treated about the same in terms of value.Buyers and sellers have opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments.On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value."

Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.
