This report contains the results of several related research efforts, all of which were aimed at enhancement of mine power system safety and reliability. The largest single effort was on optimum spares and maintenance scheduling for various components of a mine power system. Two closely related tasks involved calculation of the minimum arcing faults that could occur on dc trailing cables and the use of trippable load break switches to clear ground faults. Both of these tasks are concerned with reliable fault clearing to prevent shock and fire hazards. Three other closely related tasks were concerned with aspects of mine power system design: (1) alternate network topologies, (2) optimum voltage selection for mine power systems, and (3) selection of system components. The other research task consisted of laboratory tests to ascertain the effects of repetitive, low-level transients on insulation systems.

During 1982 and 1983, the Bureau of Mines concentrated its fugitive dust control research on haulage road dust suppression by newer chemi-cals relatively unknown in the mineral industry, innovative dust control designs for haulage trucks, chemical tailing basin stabilization, and combined chemical and vegetation tailing basin stabilization. Relatively unknown dust suppression chemicals and innovative aerodynamic modifications to haulage truck fender designs were tested on a Minnesota sand and gravel operation haulage road. Magnesium chloride salt at 95-pct control efficiency and a petroleum derivative at 70-pct control efficiency were effective in suppressing dust generated by haulage vehicles; however, none of the fender modifications were successful. Commonly used dust suppressant chemicals were tested on a Minnesota taconite tailing basin to reduce the dust lift-off during the spring and fall dry seasons. The most successful chemical was lignin sulfonate with a seasonal cost of less than $200 per acre to achieve 90-pct dust control. When chemical treatments for immediate dust control were com-bined with revegetation for permanent control, the most promising chemical treatment based on vegetation response was lime-neutralized lignin sulfonate.

"Most deposits display a high degree of geological and mineralogical complexity that can affect metallurgical processing. Therefore, the proper characterization of the ore and gangue minerals requires a multi disciplinary approach combining geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and processing. However, mineralogy to a large extent informs the metallurgical process. Automated methods can be used throughout the mining chain from advanced exploration through to production.In this presentation we discuss actual case studies where automated mineralogy has been applied in a geometallurgical framework at a pre-feasibility to feasibility level. These include examples from a strongly serpentinized magmatic Ni deposit (Dumont) and a magmatic Cu-Ni deposit (Maturi). Mineral speciation and ratios, e.g., chalcopyrite, cubanite, and pentlandite/pyrrhotite are critical to model the Cu-Ni magmatic deposit. In the serpentinized Ni ore, automated mineralogy is used to speciate the Ni minerals into sulphides, alloys and refractory Ni in the silicate matrix.The mineralogical results are linked to the metallurgical test work in order to model the geometallurgical domains. These case studies will illustrate how mineral quantification and improved understanding of inherent mineralogical parameters in relation to metallurgy reduce technical risk in both exploration and flowsheet development.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgy is a cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning (e.g., Dunham et al., 2011). It is aimed to improve the understanding of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical parameters of an ore. Informational gaps among the different disciplines are often apparent. Automated mineralogy is shown in many studies (e.g., Eppinger et al., 2013, Philander and Rozendaal, 2013) to constitute the link between geology and metallurgy. The geometallurgical approach can provide specific data to geology, mining and mineral processing development and plant operations. The scope of the automated mineralogy is to illustrate how mineral quantification can improve the understanding of inherent mineralogical parameters in relation to metallurgy, and reduce the technical risk in both exploration and flowsheet development."

As we compete for close margins in wholesale sales, the effects of both quality and price have a major impact on the cost of producing electricity.SO2 emission allowances have traded as low as$60/ton to as high as $215/ton over the last three years. This price spread in emission allowances clearly demonstrates the correlation between the quality of fuels versus the price utilities will be willing to pay for them. This paper provides an overview of the effects of the qualities of fuel, coupled with transportation as well as environmental concerns on the price of fuel and the ability to compete in a deregulated electric market.

In late 1946, research was begun at the Bureau of Mines Electrometallurgical Laboratory at Boulder City, Nev., to determine the possibility of electrowinning manganese from chloride electrolytes on a continuous basis. All phases of electrodeposition were investigated on a small scale it the laboratory, and the results were reported by Jacobs and Churchward. These results indicated that a chloride process had certain possible advantages over the sulfate process that made it worthwhile to continue the investigation on a semi-pilot-plant basis, and this paper reports the results of this work. Research and development work on a process for electrowinning manganese from low-grade ores has been carried on intermittently by the Bureau of Mines since 1936. A process was developed, using sulfate electrolyte, that has been extensively described in the literature.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities during 2017 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY) and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2017 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2017 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2017 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. The resulting economic benefits of an expanded mining sector would be significant. The same story applies elsewhere in the world.CITATION:Schodde, R C, 2015. "More complex ore comminution and concentration operations have found increasing application in the mining industry due to lower grades and higher complexity of the available ores. An alternative to coping with the higher capital and operating costs of ore processing plants is the use of pre-concentration stages. They allow removing a significant mass of material with little or no content of the relevant mineral before the ore is fed into the processing plant, with the consequent reduction in the mass to be processed in downstream operations. Significant benefits arise out of the use of pre-concentration, such as higher contained metal output without the need to increase the grinding or flotation capacity, and longer mine life. The grade of marginal ores could be enhanced to a level that would make their exploration economically feasible, which would result in increasing exploitable reserves. Nevertheless, few studies to date have assessed the resulting impacts on ore grinding energy consumption and wear after the gangue is removed through pre-concentration operations. This study evaluated the energy consumption and wear of grinding circuits in Brazilian mining operations in which the feed has gone through a pre-concentration stage. Such assessment was based on different samples of sulfide and oxide ores. Laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the power consumption and wear of grinding circuits with and without a pre-concentration stage. Laboratory test results were used to simulate industrial grinding circuits based on both alternatives and illustrate the environmental and economic benefits of each one.INTRODUCTION Increasingly complex ore concentration operations in several stages have found broadening application in recent years in view of lower grades and higher complexity of the available ores. An alternative to coping with the higher capital and operating costs of ore processing plants is the use of pre-concentration stages. Different ore processing technologies can be used for that purpose, such as magnetic separation, density segregation, and separation methods based on high-tech sensors (ore sorting). Currently, the most common methods are gravimetric processes, in view of their low cost, particularly jigging and dense medium separation methods, such as the drum and cone separators manufactured by Western Machinery Company, Teska, Drewboy, Norwalt, Dynawhirlpool and Tri-flo, and dense medium cyclones (CAMPOS; LUZ; BRAGA, 2010). The use of dry ore sorters has also grown significantly in recent years (Jose Neto et al. 2017). The selection of the separator type depends essentially on the ore particle size, required flows, and operating density ranges. All these methods may even be used after preferential blasting in mining (Grigg & Delemontex, 2015)."

The longwall panels at Clarence Colliery have experienced intermittent sudden weightings on the face that have caused some production delays. These weightings have typically been more severe on the wider faces. A program of surface subsidence and extensometer monitoring was undertaken above Longwalls 4 and 5 to investigate the behaviour of the overburden strata during longwall extraction on two faces of different widths.The monitoring indicated that a dome shaped zone of large downward movement extends up into the overburden strata to a height equal to about the panel width.

"FOREWORDAmong many problems created by World War II, the question of supplies and distribution of raw materials is of outstanding importance. One of the most critical of these raw materials is fuel, and of the fuels coal is of primary importance. The normal consumption of coal has increased greatly owing to the increased tempo of industry in general. It has been necessary to divert much of the fuel oil, gasoline, etc., ordinarily used for industrial and domestic purposes, to supply the enormous demands of mechanized warfare. Coal must be provided to replace this fuel. Furthermore, the enormous increase in the production of steel has increased the demand for coking coals to a critical point.The Solid Fuels Administration for War is encouraging the use of anthracite fines in the production of byproduct coke for blast furnaces for three reasons. First, the production of anthracite for domestic use; is hampered by the inability to find a market for the fines incidental to the production of domestic sizes. Second, the shortage of low-volatile coking coal is acute, and any action that will decrease the quantity of low-volatile coal required will relieve the situation. As will be seen in this report, there is some promise that use of anthracite fines in coke-oven mixes will lower the amounts of low-volatile coal required. Third, utilization of those anthracite fines will tend also to alleviate the general fuel shortage. It has been the privilege of the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the Solid Fuels Administration in the technical problems involved."

This: report gives data on the installation and operation of a packaged-unit heat-pump installation in a residence in McLean, Va., a suburb of Washington, D. C. The original equipment, installed in January 1947, was one of the first of 50 experimental Marvair units manufactured by the Muncie Gear Works, Inc., Muncie, Ind. The compressor unit of this installation was replaced by the company in September 1947, with a modified commercial model. The commercial unit and the original pump and fan accessories have been used as the sole means of heating (and cooling in summer! the. residence for the subsequent five winters and summers. The conclusions and data given herein, therefore, cover 6 winters sad 6 summers of heat pump operation, including 1 winter when temperatures averaged below normal for 2 months and the following summer when temperatures were above normal.

"8.1. IntroductionThe stoichiometry of most named platinum-group minerals (POM) is known (cf. Cabri, 1981b, in Chapter 7), but, because these minerals are subject to a wide range of element substitutions, representative analyses require treatment in a separate chapter (section 8.2). The analyses, in all cases done by electron microprobe, are grouped in sections according to the principal platinum-group element (POE) for each POM, and then follow sequentially with increasing amounts of the principal POE starting with the ideal composition, when known. In order to facilitate reference to specific POM by name, an alphabetical listing is also given (Table 8.1). A range of compositions, in addition to one or several ""representative"" analyses, is given for some POM when more than one analysis has been reported for a particular locality. The tables of POM analyses (Tables 8.2 to 8. 76) include at least one analysis for every locality for which data have been published, to the best of the authors' knowledge. All analyses are referenced for locality and publication source, and include several unpublished analyses (all but one done at CANMET). Most analyses have been rounded off to one decimal place for amounts more than one per cent and their formulae calculated on the basis of an even number of total atoms. In all tables, ''n.d.'' stands for elements sought for but not detected and a dash signifies elements not sought, or when these haven't been specificed in the publication source.Section 8.3 contains tabulated analyses and, in some cases, also includes a critical assessment of POE-bearing minerals in which the POE occur in trace or minor quantities. The organization of the data in this section is by mineral groups; e.g., sulphides, sulpharsenides, silicates, etc. Some of these data are also discussed in Chapter 4 by Crocket (1981) and are discussed briefly in Chapter 6 by Crocket and Cabri (1981)."

The oil-producing district, "Southern Oklahoma," is generally considered to be that part of the: State lying southwest of the Arbuckle Mountains. It includes six counties: Cater, Cotton, Garvin, Jefferson, Kiowa, and Stephens. At present cost of the oil is produced from formations of Pennsylvanian age. The individual crude oils resemble those produced in other parts of the State, except that the sulfur content is rather high. This report is a continuation of a study of Oklahoma crude oils3/being made, by the Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. Analyses are given of 27 samples obtained from 21 fields in the southern part of the State, end the physical and chemical characteristics of these crude oils are discussed briefly. Analyses of crude oils from other Oklahoma areas and publications in which these analyses may be found are listed in tables 2 and 3.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1955 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 116 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1955 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

Failures of the face and roof above longwall shields have caused days and sometimes weeks of lost production. A common recovery method for these failures has been to pump light weight cementitious grout into the roof and face cavity to stabilize the area This approach while effective is very time consuming and costly. Mines in several coal producing nations have over the past few years been applying phenolic foam grouts in these situations in lieu of cementitious materials. Phenolic foam is a two-component injection product intended for cavity filling, air and gas sealing and the consolidation of highly fractured strata. The properties of phenolic foam; rapid application, quick setting, high expansion rate, high compressive strength and excellent anti-static properties, produce a fast, safe and cost effective cavity filing solution. The product is also classified as fire resistant and so is also suitable for sealing off underground heatings and for aiding fire fighting operations in deep mines. This paper will discuss the application and use of phenolic foam in various underground coal mines in the world over the past few years.

O estudo do efeito da adição de nióbio em um ferro fundido branco alto cromo tratado termicamente com 25%Cr e 3%C foi estudado neste trabalho por microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Partindo de uma liga hipereutética, a adição de 2% de nióbio foi definida considerando que todo Nb adicionado se encontraria na forma de carbonetos de nióbio, NbC, e com o objetivo de obter uma microestrutura próxima à eutética. A adição promoveu um refinamento da microestrutura, sendo que uma fração volumétrica de 27% de carbonetos M7C3 foi observada. Carbonetos grosseiros, inicialmente formados, não são facilmente observados. Uma microestrutura formada por NbC e eutético, M7C3 + matriz (austenita ou martensita), foi obtida. Os carbonetos de nióbio formados são encontrados principalmente na forma compacta. É esperado, portanto, que, a liga com adição de 2% de nióbio apresente melhor resistência ao desgaste abrasivo que a liga sem nióbio, em razão dos carbonetos primários, frágeis e grosseiros, terem sido praticamente suprimidos após a adição de Nb e uma microestrutura mais refinada tenha sido obtida.

Introduction Today, geophysical exploration is recognized as a special science wedged between geology and mining. Universities and technical institutes have special professors teaching geophysics applied to oil and ore prospecting. The list of literature on geophysical exploration has grown from practically nothing at all some twenty-five years ago to ~ several thousands of books, some of them very imposing volumes. Most of the methods now used have been developed since the first World War, and very large systematic exploration campaigns have been carried out in many places, in many countries. It has been rather difficult to obtain enough information as to what is going on in Canada. However, since the Associate Committee on Geodesy and Geophysics of the National Research Council became more actively engaged in promoting geophysical research, it may be easier to obtain information and, in the future, the quarterly issued Canadian Geophysical Bulletin may throw considerable light on the current geophysical activities in Canada. Some twenty crews have been engaged the last few years in geophysical prospecting for ore. In the United States, between 500 and 600 crews are employed exclusively in geophysical prospecting. Most of these, however, are engaged in oil exploration. During the winter 1942-1943, the German Government employed some fifty crews on geophysical exploration, and some ten crews were working for private enterprises.
