In 1980, the Bureau of Mines investigated the northern Darby Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, AK, for radioactive mineral deposits. Uranium is concentrated in silicified shear zones in biotite quartz monzonite of the Darby pluton. The shear zones are best exposed in steep, narrow, avalanche gullies; they are characterized by radiometric anomalies and by uranium and thorium geochemical anomalies. Radiometric and geochemical anomalies are also found over altered biotite quartz monzonite where there are no visible shear zones. The radiometric and uranium anomalies are often spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with alkaline mafic and felsic dikes. Similar geochemical and radiometric anomalies over discolored altered zones and geochemical anomalies in sediments downstream from the altered zones indicate that additional areas may also be favorable targets for uranium deposits. Analyses of panned, heavy mineral concentrates show no significant concentrations of uranium or thorium in resistant heavy minerals. This indicates that radioactive elements in the Darby pluton are concentrated in soluble, nonresistant minerals that may constitute a recoverable uranium resource.

[The quantity of explosives sold in the United States in January, 1931, for domestic consumption, amounted to 368,100 kegs (9,202,510 pounds) of black blasting powder, 4,810;000 pounds of permissible explosives, and 16,533,000 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. These figures are based on reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from nearly all manufacturing companies, and include an estimate of sues by several companies that do not furnish monthly reports. Reports actually received from manufacturers shored sales of 365,977 kegs of black blasting powder (consisting of 220,892 kegs of granular powder and 145,085 kegs of pellet powder), 4,687,900 pounds of permissible explosives, and 15,498,152 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January, 1931, were smaller than in January last year, the decreases being 14 per cent for black blasting powder, 19 per cent for permissible, and 17 per cent for high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January 1931 when compared with soles in December 1930, show increases for all three classes of explosives as follows: 2 per cent for block blasting powder, 16 per cent for permissible explosives, and 7 per cent for other high explosives. PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES: Of the 4,687,900 hounds of permissible reported sold during January, 97 per cent was used for coal-mining operations, Including 32 per cent for anthracite mines and 65 per cent for bituminous mines. The following Staten were the largest users of permissible explosives daring January: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and Utah. Their combined sales represented 89 per cent of the entire sales reported for this class of explosives.]

This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system, or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated methods of sodium reduction of titanium chlorides to produce high purity titanium metal (14).4/ This investigation was made to obtain a better understanding of the reactions involved in sodium reduction of titanium chlorides and was part of the Bureau's activities toward improving the technology of titanium. Theoretical and experimental evidence show that sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride occurs by stepwise reactions. The first stage reduction between sodium vapor and vapors of titanium chlorides produces titanium di-and trichlorides which subsequently condense with sodium chloride to form a salt mixture. The second stage reduction takes place in the condensed salt mixture between sodium and titanium subchlorides. Final reduction is a heterogeneous reaction between two separate phases, the a phase which consisted of sodium dissolved in sodium chloride and the ß phase titanium subchlorides dissolved in sodium chloride. The mechanism of the heterogeneous reaction between these phases is electrochemical in nature. The model proposed is a galvanic reaction at the interfacial region.

The following is a Maintainability Design Checklist for coal mining equipment. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a summary of design review points for the maintainability assessment of new or existing underground equipment. It specifically focuses on the identification of equipment design features, tasks, or procedures that impact equipment downtime, repair costs, labor hours and maintainer skill level requirements. Some checklist points are general in nature. The checklist was designed to be used across all categories of underground equipment. The intent is to draw attention to design features and maintenance procedures that will increase maintainability requirements. You are encouraged to adapt this checklist to site specific or machine specific requirements by: ? Inserting specific performance criteria for various categories of maintenance tasks. For example; all hydraulic lines on a shuttle car should be replaceable in 15 minutes or 25 minutes, etc. ? Adding or deleting checklist items for different categories of equipment. You would include environmental control equipment, for example, on face equipment and not on shuttle cars or man trips. ? Adding additional checklist items based on site or equipment specific maintenance histories or experience, company maintenance standards, or other factors.

[Coals of low-volatile rank cannot be coked without admixing large proportions of high-volatile cod in the used type of byproduct-coke oven, because they expend excessively and. exert side thrust, which ruins the oven wells. Some medium-volatile coals also give trouble. Since high-rank coals produce a strong, blocky coke, it is desirable to have the rank as high as practicable, particularly in the manufacture of foundry coke. Accordingly, it has become the practice to mix or blend high-volatile shrinking coals with as much low-volatile coal as possible and still have a mixture that mill not deform the walls or cause difficulty in pushing the coke. Occasionally, the safe limit of low-volatile cool has been exceeded and ovens have been damaged. It is desirable, therefore, to have a reliable method of determining the expending tendencies of mixtures before they are charged into the ovens. Furthermore, coal changes somewhat in its properties as mining progresses, end therefore, mixtures found to be safe at one time may cease to be so subsequently, particularly if nearly the maximum allowable percentage of low-volatile coal is being used. ]

Open specifications are not recommended for permanent applications. This method allows the contractor to select the most economical micropile system. ? Extraction of gold and other metals from ores suspended in liquid slurries often involves gases (such as oxygen) as a participant in the reaction. An important factor then in setting the rate of extraction can be mass transfer of the gas into the liquid and/or solids. A number of recent studies have indicated that as solids loadings increase, mass transfer rates of gas into solid-liquid mixtures decreases. This would seem to imply that lower solids loadings would be beneficial to increased reaction rates. However, since it is the solids which are being reacted, a most intriguing paradox is created. More solids should lead to more surface area to react, but it seemingly also provides less gas to react. So is the reaction faster or slower as solids loadings increases? The creation of this paradox is imbedded in how mass transfer and reaction data is collected and measured, how it is analyzed and correlated, and finally on the rate controlling steps in the reaction. An alternative analysis of these studies is presented which clarifies and eliminates the paradox. The analysis applies to water slurries as used in gold or other metal leaching processes or in bio-hydrometallurgy, as well as to molten metal/solid/gas mixtures such as might be encountered in submerged gas injection.

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). Radon emanation coefficients of 0.02 to 0.55 were measured at moisture contents ranging from dry to saturation in eighteen different ores. The emanation coefficients rose from a minimum when dry to a plateau usually starting at 5-20 percent of saturation. A model, using measured pore-size distributions, suggested that the radium mineralization may be confined to annular layers about 0.02 micrometers thick around pores. Radon's diffusion coefficient was determined as a function of moisture. The techniques involved comparing a disc's exhalation as a function of time whether or not the disc had a distributed source. The model was free of approximations and included the effects of porosity and adsorption. An increase of diffusion coefficient with moisture for one or two ores was explained in terms of a model's equation for the diffusion coefficient in terms of both volume and surface diffusion. Radon's adsorption coefficient was determined on a uranium ore.

Owing to the growth of alloy steel production and its influence on tramp element levels when recycled, foundries have expressed concern regarding the quality of scrap used to prepare iron castings. Reliable and current information was unavailable on the amount of tramp elements contained in iron castings over time. Accordingly, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Foundrymen's Society (AFS), analyzed cast iron samples from participating foundries throughout the United States on a quarterly basis to ascertain possible trends. Each sample was analyzed for 28 elements to determine if changes had occurred as a function of several input variables. This bulletin describes the research and presents analytical results and evaluations over a 5-3/4-year period from January 1981 to September 1986. Results show that iron casting compositions are changing with respect to a few tramp elements such as arsenic, cobalt, chromium, tin, and zinc over the period. Changes in charge compositions probably are responsible. Significant variations between zones also were observed with aluminum, arsenic, cobalt, chromium, copper, and manganese.

This survey report, the first for this type of fuel, is issued to provide information on the characteristics of the burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. Reports of surveys of diesel fuel, conducted under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Deportment of the Interior, have been published annually since 1950.2/ This survey of burner-fuel oils is similar to the diesel-fuel surveys In pattern and has been conducted under an extension of the same agreement at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. It is not intended to conflict with the diesel-fuel survey but rather to supplement it. Burner-fuel oils, also specifically referred to as heating oil, range oil, furnace oil, "Bunker C," and fuel oil, are sold in increasing volumes for use in this country and for export. Sales of all grades of fuel oil in the United States have increased from 340 million barrels in 1926Y to over a billion barrels per year. 4/ Distillate fuel oil sales, in proportion to total fuel-oil volume sold, increased from 42 percent in 1950 to 50 percent in 1954. For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines-in cooperation with other agencies-has been making investigations and compiling and publishing reports and statistics on accidents in the various branches of the mineral industry.4 Its assistance has been enlisted also in health, safety, and ventilation problems' incident to the driving of many large tunnels in the United States in recent years. As part of this work the Bureau has compiled considerable statistical and other information on accident experience in the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry. It has always been difficult to obtain up-to-date information on tunneling methods and tunnel accidents. Published accounts of tun¬nel construction furnish much interesting material of engineering, historical, or fiscal value, but usually little or no attempt is made to discuss and critically analyze the means taken to preserve the health and life of employees.

This Bureau of Mines report describes field investigations conducted in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of Idaho to obtain data on rock stress and physical properties. The resulting information has been utilized as input to detailed finite-element analyses to establish structural design criteria for deep-vein mine shafts. Measurement techniques include the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research biaxial and triaxial strain cells, the U.S. Geological Survey solid-inclusion probe, and the Colorado School of Mines dilatometer. Physical property testing was conducted in the laboratory on core obtained from each test site. Limited in situ physical property tests were also conducted. Reason-able success was obtained with the CSIR equipment, which was considered the most suitable for stress measurement in the study area. Test sites ranged in depth from 1,200 to 7,700 feet and are described in detail. The stress data were reduced by least-squares linear regression techniques to enable prediction of vertical and horizontal stresses to 7,500 feet. Ratios between the horizontal stresses as utilized for shaft design varied considerably, and a hydrostatic condition is the exception, based on Bureau measurements. Physical properties also varied widely, due to the complex geologic structure. Analyses of the data in terms of the tectonic history of the area show reasonable correlation. Data from previous rock mechanics investigations from the Coeur d'Alene district were also compiled and presented as part of this report to justify any generalizations regarding stress conditions and physical properties of the district as a whole.

A hydro metallurgical process has been developed for the recovery of metal values such as Co, Ni and rare earths from the electrode materials of spent nickel metal-hydride(Ni-MH) secondary battery. MmNis_xCo. (Mm : Misch metal) intermetallic compound could be separated from the electrode materials mixture by sedimentation. A typical chemical composition of MmN5-xCox was approximately, in mass%, 56.0%Ni, 13.4%Ce, 10.6%La and 7.9%Co. The time dependency of leaching intermetallic compound with sulfuric acid solution was examined with processing factors such as sulfuric acid concentration, temperature and agitation intensity, The leaching of rare earth metals proceeded very rapidly, reaching completion in less than 1.8ks. On the other hand, the slow leaching of nickel was observed. The percent of nickel leached at 328K could only reach about 70%.

D. K. Deardorff and Haruo Kato (U. S. Bureau of Mines)—We wish to refute the 1875" 20°C value that Giessen, et al., report as the transformation temperature of hafnium. Although these authors state that their work along this line will be reported later, we can't leave their value undiscussed, for we believe it to be 125°C too high. Our value of 1750° 20°C, which the authors mention, has been substantiated in our laboratories by the use of three other methods. The first method of substantiation was by heating and cooling curves using a hafnium/tungsten thermocouple, the couple having first been calibrated against a t/Pt-10 pct Rh couple. The second method was by quenching and metallography of dilute Hf-Ta alloys. The third cussion, it may be pointed out that the observations of Rogers referred to large unidirectional strains where the internal cracks or voids appeared only after a strain of 32 pct or more. On the contrary the internal fissures observed, as a result of fatigue cycling, occurred for a total extension of some 5 pct and furthermore followed the directions of the slip zones. Finally, it is not our contention, as implied in Dr. Alden's last paragraph, that the tensile stress is an important factor in crack propagation. Indeed, in connection with the reference to the companion report, special note is made of the fact that "Deformation was apparently concentrated in grains which have a slip plane nearly perpendicular to the specimen axis and thus near the plane of maximum applied shear." This dependence of the growth of fissures on the orientation of the slip planes with respect to the direction of maximum applied shear is clearly shown in work on the torsional cycling of single crystals which has been submitted for publication. method was by heating and cooling curves with W/W-26 pct Re thermocouple. Counting the original resistometric method, four different methods have yielded 1750" 20°C as the transformation temperature of hafnium. All our work on determination of the hafnium transformation temperature has shown that the specimen under test must be quickly heated to and through the transformation temperature if the lowest possible transformation value is to be determined; otherwise a higher value not representative of pure hafnium will result. Speed was emphasized in all methods. In our resistometric work the corresponding voltage, amperage, and temperature readings were taken quickly and the transformation temperature was usually reached within 5 min total heating time. This paper presents only the highlights of previous research on the paleobotany of coal. The accumulated material has become so vast that a comprehensive review of all findings relating to paleobotany would be far too long. The fact that coal is derived from plants is now so well-known that no further comment is required, but knowledge of the mode of transformation of plant substances into coal is not so general. The plant matter goes first through processes of semirottins-, maceration, and elimination of certain material to form peat, which is then further transformed into coal. The first stage has been termed the "biochemical process," because the more important changes take place under the influence of micro-organisms. Near the end of the biochemical action an unconsolidated peat is formed. The second or "dynamochemical process," caused by the addition of superincumbent rock strata such as sandstones and shales and application of additional pressure and possibly heat through mountain-building forces, results in the formation of higher-rank coals ranging from brown coal to anthracite. These stages in trans-formation of plant material to coal have been described in previous reports.4 The main object of this paper is to bring to the notice of paleobotanists the fact that coal contains an enormous amount of material in a remarkably good state of preservation. Although some of the coal-forming matter has lost its identity, much of the original structure is retained. A large proportion of the coal, therefore, particularly of common bright coals, comprises constituents or components that invariably have retained some of the original plant structure, and many of these structures may be assigned to certain plants. The identity of these plants and of the remains forms the subject of this paper.

Part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines mission is to supply the U.S. mineral industries with information that is useful in planning to meet the Nation's critical and strategic mineral needs if a national emergency occurs. The Bureau conducted laboratory research including operating a nominal 100 lblh pilot plant to demonstrate the recovery and concentration of chromite by gravity and flotation operations from three northern California mineral deposits. Gravity beneficiation test results show that concentrates contained as much as 52 pet chromic oxide (CrZ03) with recoveries of about 80 pet. Results from the bench-scale unit operations of mineral liberation, tabling, vanning, spiraling, pinch sluice, work index, and thickener area determination tests are presented in this report.
