"Elkem has developed a process that utilizes SPL as a raw material for pig iron production. This process will be demonstrated in industrial scale during 2008 and 2009. The process developed produce iron, and the reduction material used, is the carbon present in the SPL. The iron source could be either virgin iron ore or waste/recycled material from the steel industry. The SPLrefractory and bath material is dissolved in the slag produced. The slag is designed so that any leaching of environmentally dangerous elements is minimized. This process can in addition to SPL, consume other types of waste derived from the primary production of aluminium. Elkem intends to supply this demo project with SPL and other waste products from external sources, domestic as well as international ones.IntroductionSpent Pot Lining (SPL) is generated when an electrolytic cell for producing aluminium is taken out of service and the refractory and carbon lining is removed from the steel potshell.The yearly generation of SPL world wide is exceeding 500 000 tonnes. The major amount of this quantity is stockpiled or land filled, unprocessed.SPL contain large amount of water soluble fluorides and some amount of cyanides and is classified as hazardous waste in most countries."

Each year in the United States over 10 million tons of metal are discarded with our municipal waste. This, includes, not only ferrous metals, aluminum and copper but gold, silver, platinum and every other precious metal. Resource recovery, as an approach to waste management, is replacing disposal and it presents great opportunities for those in the metal refining and recovery industry. Combustion of waste enriches the metal fraction left in the ash to the point where metals can be efficiently recovered. The recovery and quality of metals can be enhanced by good combustion control. Innovative technology is needed to efficiently tap this generous, and renewable mine.

"Oxygen utilization rate of the pretreatment process which adopts biological contact oxidation method for slightly polluted supply water is relatively low, less than 10%, usually lower than 3%. So the aeration amount is not determined by calculated value of oxygen demand when doing process design, but by the ratio of gas and water. The aeration way of the biological pretreatment process for slightly polluted supply water was introduced in this paper. In the foundation of the principles of mass transfer kinetic theory and experimental data, the change law of DO (dissolved oxygen) and ammonia in the aeration tank was analyzed to explore aeration method which will help to improve the overall effectiveness of handling capacity.IntroductionThere are many kinds of filler used in the biological contact oxidation process, such as flexible solid filler, composite filamentous filler, powdery clay filler, particle ceramic filler and so on. Regardless of the different forms of filler, there are a couple of common points in the function of the aeration[1,2]: (1) The aeration process in biochemical tank not only provides adequate oxygen for the biological reaction, but also plays as a role of stirring water; (2) Biochemical reactions mainly happen in the upper reaches of tank, but seldom at down-streams.This paper, from the perspective of changing aeration way, discussed the feasibility of improving the effectiveness of biochemical reactions without increasing aeration amount, which would have some leading significances for the operation and management of similar projects."

As LCDs with hazardous mercury backlight lamps are used an appropriate recycling technology has to be implemented.IntroductionLiquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) are widely used in notebooks, organizers, mobile phones, pocket calculators, measuring and control instruments, electronic games, hand-held miniature TVs, audio-video equipment, large signboards, automotive displays and more and more also for PC monitors and TVs.According to a study from Stanford Resources (San Jose, California) the annual value of LCDproducts reached 35 billion EUR in 2002, about 30% of this within the European Union, representing a total area of 2,1 million m2 Liquid Crystal Displays. An annual increase rate of about 15% is estimated for the next years (up to 4,1 million m2 in 2005).As LCDs are already on the market for several years, larger quantities of the more than 2,5 billion LCDs are coming into their End-of-Life stage for treatment. In 2005 this figure will become even more dramatic - 40.000 tons of LCD-modules contained in 2 million tons of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) or about 30% of total WEEE within EU. An amount which is representing 400 million EUR costs for incineration.Currently the only method used to deal with redundant LCD units is incineration or landfill. Both are expensive and causes emissions into the atmosphere (global warming) respectively water contamination (Class II) and difficulties in biodegradation. Up to now there is no recycling solution for LC-Displays available.As a consequence European Commission requests the disassembly of LCDs with an area bigger than 100 cm2 in the Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE Directive) of February 13, 2003."

"The pyrometallurgical method of recycling car batteries suffers from a potential for air pollution violations, which prompts the desire for a viable hydrometallurgicaJ alternative. Several Processes have been proposed, including leach-electrowinning routes using HBF4 and/or HzSiF6 based electrolytes, along with anodes of PbO2 on inert substrates.A study has been carried out to evaluate the proposed systems, with the intention of demonstrating a six month life of an electrolyte-anode combination. The work, which focused on the use of HzSiF6, has indicated that there was no acceptable anode, and has lead to the development of a technique to produce smooth, glassy, adherent coatings on graphite, and to the development of an anode composed of a series of copper cored graphite rods.The paper will present results on leaching and electrowinning experiments, as well as the description of a flowsheet for a pilot plant that will be used to produce one tone per day of refined lead from spent battery paste."

"One of the methods for waste treatment is composting during which as a result of controlled biological decomposition of organic waste in aerobic conditions harmless materials are received. Composting takes place in suitably designed premises which ensure the optimal conditions for biochemical decomposition of the waste. A usual way to process composting is the spreading of the waste on a base made from reinforced concrete.In the paper the phases and basic technical features of the process of composting, the requirements and properties of the base and the ways of protection of concrete base against corrosion are revealed. Technical decisions for a specific construction site in Bulgaria are shown and the advantage of achieving durability of the concrete constructions in the plant while achieving simultaneous environment protection from pollution is discussed.IntroductionComposting is the process of controlled biochemical decomposition of vegetable and animal organic waste in aerobic conditions as a result of which harmless materials are obtained. The latter have better stability and are rich in humus substances which are useful for agricultural crops and can be used for restoring the soil fertility [1, 2, 3, 4].In modern waste treatment plants a composting technology is adopted in which the waste is spread on a concrete base as piles with certain dimensions [1, 3]. These piles are periodically stirred or air is blown through them in order to ensure the quantity of oxygen required for the process of aerobic decomposition of the organic matter. The fluids and gases formed in the course of the composting are take away in order not to pollute the environment – air, water, and soils. For this purpose the base on which the waste is spread must satisfy certain requirements, and the gases must be taken away and rendered harmless in order to protect the atmospheric air from pollution. This paper discusses the need for protecting the concrete base from corrosion and characterizes the stages and main parameters of the composting process and the possibilities for primary and secondary protection of the concrete base from corrosion. Specific technical decisions applied in a composting facility in the area of the town of Plovdiv are presented."

Production of nickel from laterite ores has occurred for over 100 years beginning with processing of garnieritic ores from New Caledonia. However, until now the world nickel supply has been predominantly from sulfide sources. Going forward, the authors project that the production of nickel from sulfide ores will remain more or less constant. Most of the expansion in nickel production capacity over the next ten years will come from processing of laterite ores. Thus the capital and operating costs of new laterite projects will have significant impact on the nickel supply and therefore price. The authors have reviewed the history and capital and operating costs of various recent laterite projects and capital and operating costs of these projects and those "on the drawing board". The authors have also evaluated the risk associated with such projects. The paper will discuss the impact of this and the recent history on the future development of laterite nickel projects.

"The present study evaluated the feasibility of using iron species generated by electrocoagulation (EC) as an adsorbent for removal As(III/As(V) from aqueous media. The full potential of EC was evident in that more than 99 percent of arsenic was removed without addition of chemical reagents. The adsorbent iron-species generated by EC was characterized by Chemical Analyses, X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The experimental data were correlated by employing a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters such as ?H o , ?S o and ?Go were calculated. The adsorption process was found to be exothermic and spontaneous.1. IntroductionArsenic contamination in potable water supplies is a serious health problem in many countries around the world. Groundwater arsenic contamination in La Comarca Lagunera Mexico was first reported 30 years ago [1]. Arsenic concentration has been found in well water from several communities ranging from 0.25 to 1.0 ppm. The elevated concentration of arsenic in water, above that originating from natural sources, has been attributed to the use of organoarsenical pesticides in the cotton fields and also to the millions of tons of waste slag generated at a local lead smelter [1]. The main arsenic species present in natural waters are arsenate ions 3- 4 AsO (oxidation state V) and arsenic ions H3AsO3, - 2 3 H AsO and 2- 3 HAsO oxidation state III). However, As(V) ions are most prevalent in oxygenated water while As(III) is found for anaerobic conditions, such as in well water or in groundwater. Conventional methods of arsenic removal rely on chemical-based treatment with lime, alum coagulation, iron coagulation and chemical oxidation. Other processes used with varying degrees of success include adsorption onto activated carbon, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, manganese dioxide, magnetite and ionexchange resins [1-3]. These conventional processes generate a considerable quantity of secondary hazardous waste such as solid sludge, which also pose serious environmental problems. These drawbacks have forced various industries to search for effective, alternative treatment technologies for arsenic with a preference for electrochemical methods."

As the supply chain for magnesium and magnesium alloys continues to change, due to the consolidation of producers, it is essential that quality control methods be closely examined with each new supplier added. An examination of the various process steps that are needed to assure quality in the final product will be discussed thus giving a basis for the auditing of new magnesium suppliers.2. IntroductionMagnesium recycling in the past has been somewhat limited due to its use more as an alloying agent for aluminum based alloys and as a desulfurization agent in iron and steel than in more readily recycled structural products. Recycling efforts continue to improve as more production is finding its way into automotive structural components, hand tools, and a variety of computer and cellular telephone applications.With the closure of several large North American primary magnesium production facilities over the past decade we have only recently witnessed a tightness in supply that is driving magnesium prices significantly higher, nearly doubling the price in the last year alone. The rapid escalation in pricing will provide additional economic incentives to fully utilize recycling for the recovery of an even greater percentage of both old and new sources of magnesium scrap. Political pressure continues to intensify towards the secondary recovery of any and all recoverable resources of which magnesium recycling readily applies.Economics will also likely drive the development of new sources of magnesium production, both from primary and secondary production. As new sources of magnesium are offered to the marketplace the potential for product quality issues may increase. When considering any new raw material supplier a decision must be made as to the impact of defective material on the intermediate or finished product. Quality defects in magnesium ingot can result in a variety of appearance, corrosion, and even adverse structural effects in the finished product. The potential severity of the impact of defective raw materials on the finished product will determine and often justify a close look at any new supplier. An on-site audit of a new supplier of a critical raw material is often justified to ensure that an adequate quality assurance system is in place. We will now look at a number of key production points that should be examined during an on-site audit that have can have an impact on the overall quality of the finished product."

"Electric Field-Enhanced Smelting and Refining is a process for driving the reaction between carbon in hot metal and iron oxide in slag, for example, in a steelmaking reactor. This process involves inserting electrodes into the slag and metal phases, such that the overall reaction FeO + C -> Fe + CO is separated into two half-cell reactions: Fe2+ + 2e· -> Fe at the cathode in the slag, and C + O 2 • -> CO + 2e· at the anodic slag-metal interface. Without the electrodes, the reaction is very slow, but with electrodes, the additional surface area available to the ferrous ions for reduction accelerates the reaction even without any applied bias. When a bias is applied to the electrodes, the electric field across the slag further accelerates the overall reaction.With or without applied bias, the process is first-order in the ferrous ion concentration, and limited by ferrous ion transport to the cathode. To complicate matters, as the liquid iron is reduced at the cathode, the Mullins-Sekerka instability leads to formation of dendrite-like liquid iron fingers which grow into the slag. Because of this, the design of the cathode can have a significant effect on the overall process kinetics, and understanding of the dynamics of these fingers and of their effect on mass transfer is necessary for the intelligent design of the overall process and the cathode in particular.Toward this end, a detailed mesoscopic two-phase slag-metal model is presented here which describes multi component diffusion in the slag and fluid flow in both phases in the vicinity of the cathode. Diffusion in the slag is driven by chemical and electrical potentials. The phase boundary is modeled as a diffuse interface using a phase field approach. Because this electrochemical reaction occurs at high-temperature, the kinetics of charge transfer and adsorption through the double layer are fast relative to transport, permitting the use of simple linear reaction kinetics. This also eliminates the need to discretize the double layer, with the result that charge neutrality may be assumed everywhere in the domain. Introducing electric field dependence of the gradient potential and well height coefficients in the free energy function allows the model to capture electrocapillarity at the interface."

"During my first contact with industrial metallurgy as a summer vacation worker at the Steelplant at Luleå, Sweden, I came during a visit to MEFOS into contact with works of Prof. Worner caried out during the piloting of the Worcra continuous steelmaking process. These tests are still today remarkable as an innovative step in the art of metalmaking. By that they involved the necessary ingredients for the development of our art: seeing, knowing and doing. Industrial injection as applied during slag fuming will be discussed below.Phenomena of injection metallurgyPhenomenon according to Collins dictionary is"" anything that can be perceived as an occurrence or facts by the senses"". To open the senses for the interesting phenomena in pyrometallurgy must be the main task of any educator. The investigations by Engh et al. around the mixing phenomena of the WORCRA process are an early example of combining senses with knowledge. To see what you model must be a crucial part in any development. This can also involve to see and control that one is subject to the same conditions as in published models. Below the need ""to see"" will be illustrated by some recent investigations around slag fuming. In the literature various models for reactions occuring during the fuming of slags are presented. Lead smelting at Cookson Industrial Materials was formerly carried out using a combination of Blast and Reverberatory Furnaces. In the late 70' s these furnaces were replaced by two 20 tonne capacity Rotary Furnaces. This furnace type has proved to be more flexible in the range of feedstock that can be processed, including lead drosses, battery plate and even whole batteries. High rates of production have been achieved whilst attaining a good level of environmental control. The majority of the sulphur in the feedstock can be fixed by use of appropriate fluxes.

"Nearly all the easy things have been investigated in injection metallurgy. Water models have been used exhaustively to study mixing, gas distribution and flow in submerged jets. Mathematical models have been developed with their restrictive boundary conditions to quantify submerged gas jet behavior. While being valuable tools to our understanding of injection metallurgy, there is an obliqueness to their application. What we need now are measurements and modelling on the actual systems, hot and unfriendly, where gas meets liquid at temperatures above l000°C. This is where the challenge lies.AN APPRECIATONThere are those who follow the trail and there are those few who blaze new trails in search of novel concepts and processes. With his restless, inventive mind, Howard Womer is a trail blazer without doubt. Decades ago, he was a pioneer in the pursuit of continuous steelmaking with the WORCRA Process and, today, he is developing new processes for the treatment of waste. He is not only an inventor but has been a professor at the University of Melbourne and was the first Director of Research at BHP. He has influenced the lives of many people, including myself; with his achievements and humanity. Therefore it is most fitting that this symposium should be held in honour of Howard Womer, a luminary in the metallurgical world for over half a century.BACKGROUNDGas injection has been an integral part of pyrometallurgical processes since the early days of Bessemer, then of Pierce and Smith. Today, of course, one cannot imagine pyrometallurgical processes without submerged gas injection to effect reactions for metal extraction and refining, to provide mixing and to inject solids into molten metal, slag or matte. Spurred on by new developments like tonnage oxygen and argon production, the Savard-Lee concentric tuyere and porous plugs, new steelmaking processes have emerged; and now solids injection is changing copper extraction processes. The ingenuity of the extractive metallurgists who drove these developments is inspiring for they have applied gas injection to transform pyrometallurgical processes. Humankind has been the beneficiary.' Today these processes are safer, more efficient, cost effective, less energy intensive and more environmentally friendly."

The aluminium matrix composites with ceramic dispersoids can be separated by density difference concept. In the proposed work composite scrap is recycled using an oil fired furnace. The scrap is melted in the furnace and temperature is maintained below 740 degree centigrade. Because of the density difference the lighter dispersoids will float and heavier dispersoids will settle down. The clean melt is separated be removing the floating and settled disperssoils, and then filtering using ceramic filters.

"The distortion of metal parts during heat treatment process is one of the main obstacles in industry to ensure high-quality work and less or no machining allowance, especially for large but thin steel castings such as heavy turbine blades. In the paper, a method is proposed to control the distortion by adjusting heat transfer coefficient of metal parts during heat treatment process. Required heat transfer coefficients can be realized by getting the metal parts into contact with various media such as water spray, insulation felt or materials with different heat conductivity. The control method based on this idea is set up and achieved. By using insulation felt and water spray to change the heat transfer coefficient during the stages of heat treatment process, the results indicate that the proper control time and vary with materials.IntroductionThe distortion of metal parts during heat treatment process is one of the main obstacles in industry to ensure high-quality work and to realize less or no machining allowance [1]. For example, the Three Gorges turbine blade’s distortion is as large as 50mm during heat treatment process. The uneven heating and cooling during heat treatment process is the main reason for distortion [2]. By adjusting heat transfer coefficient of different areas of metal parts, the heat treatment process could be controlled. The temperature variation, direct cause for distortion, could be under control. Loeser Klaus used high pressure gas to achieve uniform heat transfer during gas quenching and proposed the possibility to use ""Dynamic Quenching"" processes where the quenching severity is varied during quenching by stepwise control of either gas velocity or gas pressure [3]. Li Zhichao also suggested minimizing distortion by marking a component into several areas and imposing different heat transfer coefficients on each area [4]. Heat transfer coefficient can be controlled by getting the metal parts into contact with different media such as water spray, insulation felt, air or different heat conduction materials. In addition, the exact time to adjust the heat transfer coefficient is another factor for distortion. A method is presented in this paper by actively adjusting heat transfer coefficient for different areas of metal parts and different stages of heat treatment process to control their distortion. The corresponding experiments have been made by using different metal materials."

"The clearing of tuyeres on copper and nickel converters or similar metallurgical, vessels has, for many years, been done using mainly a manually- operated ""puncher"". One such device is the ""Gaspe Puncher"" developed in 1962 at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter. In an attempt to remove the operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor.The automated puncher is controlled by a Texas Instruments Model 530C Programmable Controller (PLC). Position measurement and control is done using non-contact position measuring equipment from the Tele-Controls Division of Geodimeter Inc. The entire automation system was installed on an existing Gaspe Puncher with minimum disruption to the operation of the smelting process. The operator's panel allows the user to ""block out"" any individual tuyere, and to select any of a variety of operating modes.The development of the automated puncher is described, and the results of several months operation are given.IntroductionThe tuyeres of copper and nickel converters and similar metallurgical vessels become blocked with solidified material formed by the cooling action of the blowing air. This restricts the converting operation. Clearing these blocked tuyeres has for many years been done mainly using a manually-operated ""puncher"" which uses a hydraulic or pneumatically-operated piston to drive a steel bar into the tuyere. The Gaspe Puncher, developed at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter in 1962 is one such device. It is currently being built and sold by Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited, under license to Noranda. There are over 200 units in operation world-wide.In an attempt to remove the Puncher operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, and to increase productivity, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor. This paper describes the development of the automated Gaspe Puncher, its installation at the Horne Smelter, and the results of its operation after several months."

"A control system architecture has been developed using the Ward-Mellor structured analysis techniques for real-time applications. This approach has produced several advantages over traditional control system implementation methods including:•,partitioning of the control system into discrete control functions.•,easy identification of the interaction between individual control functions and the rest of the system including the impact of changes at the control system boundary (i.e. additional inputs or outputs).•,simplified control software testing.•,a closed loop design, implementation and documentation process.This paper describes a generic control application in which the process specification and control system design are logically linked. Both components are used by process engineers for on-going development.IntroductionAluminium is reduced from alumina in multiple electrochemical semi-batch reactors. Raw material additions and molten metal withdrawal are made at discrete intervals ranging from seconds to days. The electrolytic reduction process is continuous, despite the semi-batch nature of the material inputs and outputs. The chemical and physical processes that occur within each reactor are complex and interdependent, therefore simple methods used for the control of many chemical processes are impractical. The process control system is required to optimise operating efficiencies within the safe operating zone.The process control of aluminium reduction cells is heavily biased towards calculation of process variables with relatively few measured sensors. Each cell is controlled independently of the other cells, although changes to process conditions and raw material . quality will affect all cells. The process responds relatively slowly and with significant time lags. Measurements and process variable calculations occur each second, however the accuracy and precision of actuator response and sensor sampling are measured 111 milliseconds. Time-based scheduling is a significant component of reduction cell control."

"The easy accessibility and power of the PC, as well as the education of our engineering students in the use of these tools, are compelling reasons for developing computer aided instructional (CAI) tools. There are a wide range of areas in the engineering curriculum where students must learn the steps and the process of applying judgement in problem solving. In the typical course instruction, · an instructor introduces theory to students; the application of the theory to solving problems is often demonstrated in the abstract. Students therefore spend a significant amount of time learning how to apply the theory to problem solving. Additional time and effort must then be spent to get students to the point of learning concepts and integrating this knowledge. A number of computer aided packages have therefore been developed for use in several courses in the materials science and engineering curriculum that encompass both calculational and instructional capabilities. This paper presents an overview of some of these packages which include the solution of a non-linear equation, the instruction of binary diffusion couples, an introduction of crystallography, an introduction to heat transfer and the solution of thermodynamic stability diagrams. The context in which these CAI Tutorials were developed and are being used will be discussed. The pitfalls in the development of these packages will also be discussed. The use of the tutorials has important implications on the expectations from an engineering education of both instructor and student.IntroductionTraditionally, it is quite routine to teach engineering students how to use a computer (the PC today for undergraduates) as a tool in performing engineering calculations or in simulating a process or a unit operation. This often takes the form of one course in computer programming, whether it is Fortran, Visual basic or a spreadsheet, and another course in numerical computation. However, the materials and electronic revolution have brought about considerable advances in computer power and speed, and accessibility. Today, the manipulation of digital images, movies, and speech are commonplace on a desktop PC.' Many mathematical models that were executed only on workstations can now be readily handled on a PC. Concurrently, more of our students own a PC even if their curriculum does not require them to purchase one. Today, virtually every university student has been introduced to the PC in either their elementary or high school education. Hence, the increased capabilities and accessibility of the PC and the familiarity of students with this tool make it compelling to explore its use as an educational tool for our engineering students. This is not a traditional role of a computer in our engineering curriculum."

Zeolite Na-A can be synthesized from the suspension by sonicating treatment at comparatively shorter exposing time than conventional heating treatment. The main effect of ultrasound for the production of zeolite Na-A in the present heterogeneous solid/liquid reaction is intense stirring the solid and liquid substances to produce relatively narrow-sized zeolite Na-A particles with higher CEC value.
