A fundamental study of the sonochemical leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric ion media has been performed to understand and quantify the effects of sonication and other parameters on leaching reactions. The study covers sulfate and chloride media. The main leaching reaction: CuFeS2(s) + 4Fe3+(aq) Cu2+(aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) + 2S(s) (1) was found to be dependent on temperature and initial particle size, but less dependent on ferric ion concentration. Leaching kinetics were not affected by ferrous ion concentration or the amount of chalcopyrite added. Leaching was performed under a variety of sonication and leaching conditions. Reaction stoichiometry was confirmed through detailed wet chemistry analysis and mass balance calculations. The use of ultrasound activation showed a clear improvement in leaching kinetics and amount of copper extracted, sonication having a catalytic-like effect on the leaching reaction. Compared to experiments without sonication, reaction rates were 2-3 times faster at the same temperature, and could be faster by a factor of 20 for the same initial particle size. Regardless of initial particle size, the amount of copper extracted was comparable under sonication, and could be twice that under chemical leaching, implying the avoidance of fine particle grinding. Sonochemical leaching was found to be only temperature dependent, where the best copper extraction was at 75C. Leaching was further enhanced by the use of a grinding aid. The leaching behavior of chalcopyrite particles remained similar with and without ultrasound activation, implying that the known passivation mechanism in the oxidative leaching was not eradicated. Sonication resulted in coarse particle breakage (ultrasonic milling). Sonication did not contribute to particle passivation, as affirmed from different leaching procedures and sonication in aqueous and organic media. Parabolic leaching kinetics were confirmed for leaching experiments.

"In an attempt to raise the copper grade of Printed Circuit board (PCB) by removing other components, carbonization treatment was investigated. The crushed PCB without surface-mounted parts was carbonized under nitrogen atmosphere. After screening, the char was classified by size into oversized pieces, undersized pieces and powder. The copper foil and glass fiber pieces were liberated and collected in undersized fraction. The liberation of copper foil from the oversized pieces was also investigated. The copper foil was liberated easily from glass fiber by stamping treatment. Liberation rate of copper foil was high at high carbonized temperature. The experimental results indicated that 90% of oversized char was liberated and the copper foil recovery from PCB carbonized at 1073K was 110kg/t. The copper recovery from char powder by flotation was also investigated. 15% of the copper grade and 80 % of the copper recovery were obtained, whereas the removal rate of silicon was 55%.IntroductionWaste Electrical and Electronic Equipments (WEEEs) should be recycled because they have many kinds of valuable materials and most WEEEs include Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). In Japan, about 30 km2 per year of Printed Circuit board (PCB) has been produced [1], PCBs are normally separated from WEEEs and picked up by hand and sold to non-ferrous metal market because PCBs include high grade of copper and other precious metal such as gold, silver and palladium [2]. However, PCB also has impurities such as silicon, aluminum and calcium which are slag materials in non-ferrous smelting process, and other harmful elements such as lead, bromine and antimony. Low grade PCBs are sold after removal of invaluable parts or sometimes land filled without any treatment"

"The present work investigated the influence of Fe+2 initial concentrations in the bioleaching of copper from printed circuit board using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR. Printed circuit boards were collected from obsolete computers and mechanically processed through size reduction followed by magnetic separation. The bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR were grown and adapted in presence of printed circuit boards. A shake flask study was carried out on the printed circuit boards samples (non-magnetic fraction) using a rotary shaker under the following fixed conditions (185 rpm, 30°C). The bioleaching efficiency was evaluated by comparison between the concentration in the initial sample and in the leached liquor, pH of the medium and concentration of ferrous iron produced. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (1CP-OES) was used to determine the metals concentration. The results showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR leached 63% copper from printed circuit boards using supplemented medium with Fe+2.IntroductionThe waste of electric and electronic equipment is generated by discarding of equipment such as obsolete computers and cell phones which is stimulated by the technology innovations and it has been growing each year. "Cadmium sulfide thin films were prepared on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis technique at a substrate temperature of 490°C. Some of the films were etched by HC1 in distilled water, others were heat treated in nitrogen atmosphere, and another set of films was first etched by HC1 and then annealed. Room temperature impedance spectroscopy measurements on the films were performed using coplanar geometry in the dark and in room light in the frequency range 20 Hz to 1 MHz. The experimental data were represented by complex plane diagrams and showed one well-defined semicircle in the high frequency region. Hence the equivalent circuit that models the CdS: In thin films was found to be a single RC circuit, which indicates the bulk conduction through the grains. The influence of treatments on the electrical properties was investigated.IntroductionCadmium sulfide (CdS) is a brilliant II—VI semiconductor material with a direct band gap of 2.42 eV at room temperature. It has many outstanding physical and chemical properties, which have promising applications in multiple technical fields including photochemical catalysis, gas sensor, detectors for laser and infrared, solar cells, nonlinear optical materials, various luminescence devices, optoelectronic devices and so on [1]. There are different methods to prepare undoped and doped CdS films, such as rf sputtering [2] chemical bath deposition (CBD) [3], pulsed laser deposition (PLD) [4], and spray pyrolysis (SP) [5-11]. Of these methods, spray pyrolysis represents the less expensive option, and can produce large area high-quality low cost thin films [12]."

"A study is carried out to see the adequacy of using flying ashes coming out from a Power Station to eliminate the copper present in waste cyanide waters that are generated in gold mines.Tests were carried out to see how effective the use of ashes taken from two Power Stations could become. Later, the tests are made using ashes coming from Narcea Power Station as this station is near the mine under study.The work is centred on looking for an economically adequate solution to close the waste decanting ponds of the mine. After several tests, a solution is reached through filtration in static layers.IntroductionThe use of coal to adsorb some water-soluble substances has been widely studied [1,2,3,4,] both in the treatment of drinking waters and in determined stages of selective detachment of cyanide gold complexes in cyanide lixiviation processes [5]. Flying ashes sent to the atmosphere by Power Stations as a sub-product of the combustion of this combustible are generally made of more of a 70 % of a vitreous aluminosilicated material and of an active residual material which may be changeable making them potentially useable as adsorbents. Nevertheless, the properties of each kind of ashes depend on the characteristics of the Power Station, of the combustibles being used, of the combustion system, etc.The aim of this work is to demonstrate the adequacy of flying ashes to eliminate the copper present in cyanide waters coming from gold mines either by adsorption or precipitation of the metal. For this study, tests are carried out with Asturian ashes which have a low quantity of lime. The results obtained in the tests demonstrate the effectivity of the method used. To be absolutely concrete, the work is carried out to establish the use of these ashes in the closing of Asturian installations of cyanide lixiviation"

"Ti-5Ta-2Nb alloy and 304L austenitic stainless steel were joined by explosive cladding process. Investigations on 'as received' explosive clad revealed high hardness very near the interface due to martensitic transformation of 304L steel base plate. To improve ductility, explosive clads were heat treated in the temperature range of 823 to 1073 K for 1 to 20 h. Consequent change in the microstructure and microchemistry of the clad interface was studied. No change in the interface microstructure was observed for heat treatment at 823 K. Increase in temperature lead to the formation of various reaction zones at the interface, their number and width increase with temperature and time of thermal exposure. Growth kinetics of the reaction zones was monitored and activation energy required for formation was calculated. From elemental redistribution profiles, effective inter-diffusivities of alloying elements were calculated as a function of concentration and activation energy required for inter-diffusion was evaluated.IntroductionFor engineering components exposed to highly oxidizing and corrosive environments, a titanium based alloy i.e Ti-5Ta-2Nb (Ti-Ta-Nb) is often chosen as a structural material [1,2]. For economic consideration, vessels and piping exposed to non-oxidizing conditions are fabricated from 304L austenitic stainless steel (304L SS). Hence, dissimilar joint of Ti-5Ta-2Nb alloy and austenitic stainless steel becomes unavoidable. Fusion welding processes are not suitable for joining Ti and Fe based alloys due to the propensity for the formation of intermetallic phases and subsequent reduction in the bond strength [3,4]. Hence, explosive cladding, a solid state welding technique, was used to achieve high integrity, corrosion resistant joints between the two alloys."

"Colombia produces nine tons of electronic waste per year and there are approximately 60 tons accumulation generated in the last nine years. This work aims to establish a general methodology in the laboratory to recover gold, silver and platinum group present in electronic waste, also explore other forms of recovery of metals contained in electronic waste. We selected seven types of electronic cards present in the computers, which have their parent desoldering electronic components. Initially, we characterized the components of the cards through X-ray diffraction and SEM, to identify the metal species and composition. Tests were conducted laboratory hydrometallurgical recovery of metals. This paper proposes a methodology for laboratory-scale work.INTRODUCTIONColombia produces nine tonnes of electronic waste per year and build there in about 60 tons generated in the last 9 years [1], Computers, TVs, audio equipment, monitors, cell phones, remote controls, printers and operated toys battery, among others are part of this inventory, which mostly comes to landfills, because the lack of legislation to control the final destination of waste electrical and electronic equipment, and lack of efficient technologies to recover materials [2]. Under these circumstances which have environmental implications, technological and economic recovery is essential metals present in the electronic cards of computers, by hydrometallurgical with subsequent base metal electrodeposition [3]. Pyrometallurgical route is discarded by major implications for economic and environmental [4]. Recovery From this perspective, the determination of the metal fraction and the relationship between the different metals, using the SEM characterization techniques - BSE and XRD is indispensable [5] It follows with electrolytic dissociation processes in the leaching and electrodeposition [6], and unit operations in the laboratory to carry out successfully these processes on a larger scale. "Prior to refine an ultra-high purity material, it is necessary to estimate the surface cleanness of a base material. In this report, the cleaning method of a surface for refining of an ultra-high purity aluminum has been studied. Aluminum sample of 99.999% purity was p9lished mechanically and electrically and washed with various solvents. Surface composition and a depth profile near the surface were examined. Based on the experimental results, surface structure of an ultra-high purity aluminum was discussed.IntroductionRecently, studies on high purity metals have become of interest, and we have reported .various properties of an ultra- high purity aluminum1- 2)In order to purify a metal, it is necessary to clean a work area and to make vacuous as possible. So, we are studying the purification of aluminum by an ultra-high vacuum refining system and a zone refining system set up in a clean room with cleanliness class of 1000.Now, in order to avoid a mixing of impurities into the refining metal, a surface cleanness of a base metal is very important factor. The purity of the base aluminum used our work is 99.999%, but the surface state of the base aluminum is not clear. Aims in this work .are to investigate the surface state and to obtain the cleaning method of the base aluminum.Experimental procedureSamples used in this work were 99.9% (3N), 99.99%(4N) and 99.999% (SN) aluminum produced industrially and 99.9999% (6N) aluminum purified by us."

Several foaming aluminum samples of different density were prepared in a semi-industrial scale experimental system. Their properties such as the energy absorption characteristics, mechanical properties, heat conductivity and acoustical properties were measured. The results showed that the foaming aluminum with a density of 0.5 to 0.6 g/cm3 has the best energy absorption and this makes it suitable as the ensuring bar of the automobiles and also as a cushion material for the engine. The foaming aluminum with a density of 0.25 to 0.4 g/cm3 has the best acoustical properties and heat conductivity resistance, which is suitable for the door filling material, the ceiling and the partition of the car engine.

"Nippon Mining & Metals' Hitachi Refinery refines 40% of the anodes produced at its Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery. Its current annual production stands at 180,000tons.The refinery always endeavors to increase productivity. One of the outcomes of its efforts is an originally developed automatic short-circuit detector used to inspect short-circuits between anode and cathode. The detector is designed to inspect the 56 pairs of anode and cathode in a cell by fluxgate sensors at once. It inspects 564 cells, automatically and un-manned, and gathers data to be put into a computer. The development of the detector led to a reduction of man-power and achieved a detection accuracy superior to that of a hand-held gauss-meter. In addition, statistical and historical processing of the data enabled early detection and early recovery of the cells with poor efficiency.The new system also contributed to raising the refining capacity and reducing the unit steam consumption, because it is possible to inspect even the cells covered with thermal insulation sheets.IntroductionInspection of cells is an important component of the operation management of a tank-house. At the Hitachi Plant, it used to be carried out by two workers who walked on and checked all the cells of its tank-house once a day to find out any short-circuits in the cells, using hand-held gauss-meters. They inspected about 33 thousand pairs of cathodes and anodes a day and removed nodules by hammers. This method had following problems:it needed much manpower.the walk on the cells sometimes deranged electrodes positions.there was radiation-loss connected with the inspection due tothe fact that the workers were obliged to uncover thermal insulation sheets on the cells while inspecting."

Onahama Smelter has two green-charge reverberatory furnaces and the annual smelting capacity is 600 thousand tons copper concentrate. In addition to the concentrate, various kind of industrial wastes has been processed and utilized. First, the brick waste from converter is ground and used as raw material of castable for repairing the copper melt launders. Second, the slag containing calcium-sulfide from other foundry is fed to the reverberatory furnaces. Calcium sulfide is oxidized to CaO. The melting rate of concentrate is accelenlled and the slag loss is decreased. Third, the tip tire made of waste car tire is charged into the reverberatory furnaces as fuel. The steam of waste heat boiler for turbine generators has been increased so as to decrease the electricity cost. Fourth, the sulfur accretion from other chemical plant is blended into the copper concentrate and the sulfur is recovered as the gypsum for sale. Fifth, the processed waste oil has been utilized in the copper concentrate dryer by which the smelting capacity was increased effectively. Consequently, Onahama smelter contributes to the society by processing the wastes to the harmless slag and utilizing them as fuel through the copper smelting.

"Electrowinning of copper by monopolar cells require common anode and cathode busbar and crossbars to connect each electrode to the respective common busbar. On the other hand, the bipolar configuration warrants the end electrodes only to be connected to busbars; there is substantial reduction in copper requirement. In the present work, an electrowinning cell with bipolar electrodes and end electrodes, each having an area of 1000 cm2 was designed and operated. The bipolar electrode is made of mixed metal oxide coated titanium mesh welded to plain titanium sheet. Coated titanium mesh acts as anode and the plain titanium sheet acts as cathode. Environmentally unacceptable lead anode and the recurring loss of lead are done away with. Closer spacing of the electrodes, paves way for the application of higher current density leading to mass transfer enhancement. Performance of bipolar copper electrowinning cell is reported.1. IntroductionThe normally adopted practice in electrowinning of copper is the conventional monopolar configuration. In this practice, the individual electrodes act either as anode or cathode. Hence there is a need to connect every one of the electrodes to the common anode or cathode busbar and crossbars running across the top of the cell are necessary. The common busbar carries very high current which is divided among the individual crossbars and hence has to be thicker in relation to the current load of the cell. The drawback of the need to use common busbars of thicker cross section and the need to have crossbars are obviated in the bipolar configuration."

Many industrial processes require energy. Energy is required for melting or heating purposes. The heat can be generated by electrical heating or combustion/oxidation of hydrocarbons. Oxygen supports the combustion process. Oxygen is naturally contained in air with about 21 vol.-percent. The use of technical oxygen will allow an increase to the natural oxygen concentration of combustion air. Altering the combustion process by increasing the oxygen content has various effects. These effects are described and analyzed with regard to heat transfer, emissions and energy consumption. Industrial processes requiring oxyfuel are described and discussed regarding energy aspects.

The finite and non-renewable nature of mineral resources poses unique challenges for sustainability: How can mineral and material needs of society be satisfied indefinitely? How can the benefits of exploitation of minerals best be captured for present and future generations? How can the environmental problems caused by large scale mining and processing best be ameliorated? These issues are rarely addressed, or if so only incidentally, in traditional courses in geology, mining, metallurgy and materials yet addressing them will increasingly be a major role for professionals in the minerals and materials industry and related sectors and agencies. This paper describes a framework for examining these and other sustainability issues related to meeting future material needs from non-renewable resources. The framework may be useful for educational purposes, either as the basis of a dedicated subject or by including the elements of it throughout a traditional course in relevant subjects.

A bulk compositional chemical analysis often provides incomplete information to help the mineral processor when faced with the problem of removing troublesome contaminants in low concentrations. Michigan Tech has developed a unique approach for addressing this problem. A combination of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). and image analysis was successfully used to characterize the species responsible for phosphorus contamination of less than .05 weight percent in iron ore. An automated routine acquired the chemical signature of each particle on a backscattered electron image. The few particles containing phosphorus were identified from the hundreds of particles examined. and the phosphate phases present were easily characterized.

Improvement of the coke quality for blast furnace (BF) iron making by hydrothermal oxidation treatment on coke quality was investigated. Results show that, under subcritical condition, sulfur removal rate is 15% and the weight loss is 3%; under supercritical condition, both sulfur removal rate and mass loss rate increase with the increase of H2O2 concentration. In the experimental conditions, sulfur removal rate and mass loss rates were 45% and 17%, respectively. Hydrothermal oxidation treatment could reduce the CO2 reactivity of the coke and the treatment under supercritical condition is more effective. Hydrothermal oxidation treatment could improve the graphitization of the coke and smoothness of pore boundary in the coke and the treatment under supercritical condition is more effective.

As Phelps Dodge Corporation addresses the environmental challenges of the 1990's, water management has become a key element in an overall waste minimization strategy. The Phelps Dodge Hidalgo copper smelter has implemented a comprehensive water management program that includes management of both fresh and process water utilized by its pyrometallurgical operation. Two major technological strategies are being implemented. They are the design, construction and operation of a raw water pre-treatment facility to allow increased evaporation within cooling towers thereby minimizing blow down, and the use of a brine concentrator to treat and recycle significant quantities of process water. The end result of this program is a significant reduction in raw water pumped from the underlying aquifer into the facility as well as a decrease in process water which must be impounded or otherwise treated.

Two separate on-line analyzers are operated at the Corefco metals refinery. The first application is an on-line refractometer which measures the ammonium sulphate concentration in the primary feed slurry tank. The second application is a multi-stream X-Ray fluorescence analyzer which measures the metals and sulphur concentrations in eight key refinery streams. Specific applications of the on-line analyzers with advanced control systems for improved process control will be discussed.
