In the blast furnace, the reduction of iron oxide and gasification of coke occur simultaneously. It is well accepted that the gasification reaction controls the simultaneous reaction. Therefore, it is important to develop highly reactive carbonaceous materials. It is also known that the reaction is accelerated catalytically with the addition of some materials. In the present work, the catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the gasification of graphite and coke was examined. The catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the reaction rate of graphite was noticed The effect was larger at lower temperature. At 1373 K, the effect almost vanished. The effect was larger in the order of CaO, iron and nickel. The reaction rate of de-ashed coke increased by the addition of iron and nickel. The effect of iron was larger than that of nickel. The effect was larger at higher temperature, which was contrary to the case of graphite. The reactive surface area increased also by the addition. Therefore, the catalytic effect on reaction rate might be attributable to the increase in the reactive surface area.

The first installation at a copper smelter of a Semtech OPC System for continuous, on-line production control of copper converting in PS converters took place in 1994. At present OPC systems are installed at 19 PS converters. The technology presents to the operator real-time information on the progress of the process he is controlling in the form of optical process parameters, thus facilitating dynamic process control. The optical process parameters are based on time- and wavelength resolved registrations of the light emitted by the off-gas flames and identification of correlation between these parameters and characteristic metallurgical process data. The present paper provides a description of the technology as seen by the furnace operators and a summary of operating experiences made during five years of full-scale, operation at various smelters, reviews influences from the technology on smelter operational practises and comments on recent developments as regards new applications of the technology.

Physical treatment and chemical treatment of spent lithium-ion battery were studied in our research team. Especially we developed two types of acidic leaching for crushed powders containing LiCoO2 of spent lithium ion battery. One of them is sulfuric acid leaching with H2O2 as a reducing agent. The leaching rates of cobalt, lithium and the other metals were above 99 % at the condition of 2 M H2SO4, 10 vol. % H2O2, 75 °C, 300 rpm agitation speed, 250 g/5L solid liquid ratio and 75 minutes reaction time. And the other leaching process is the oxalic acid leaching. In this process more than 99% of Li and less than 1% of Co were dissolved at the condition of 3M oxalic acid, 80°C reaction temperature, 300rpm agitation speed, 50g/L initial solid/liquid ratio and 90min extraction time. Each process has its advantage and disadvantage. In sulfuric acid leaching, leaching reagent is very cheap and cobalt could be recovered into cobalt hydroxide. On the other hand, oxalic acid is more expensive than sulfuric acid but lithium could be dissolved selectively. Also cobalt could be recovered into cobalt oxalate and it could be changed into cobalt oxide after heat treatment. In order to select the effective recycling process, recovery rate and purity of cobalt hydroxide and cobalt oxalate were compared and it was investigated which process was more environment-friendly and economical.

The investigation of some peculiarities of conductivity dependence on filler type and amount in the polymer composites has been conducted. It is established, that conductivity of composites based on phenolformaldehide resin essentially depends on proportion of double fillers: graphite + carbon black, graphite+ andesite, contained in composites. It was shown, that these composites characterized by synergetic effect ? non additive influence of fillers concentration on the conductivity of composites. Some other properties of composites contained binary fillers (effect of temperature and pressure on the conductivity) have been investigated.

Improvements and modifications on lay out and process, from 1997 till 1998, are presented. Based on a Teniente Converter, started up 1993, a Strategic Development Plan was structured to increase the production efficiency and comply with the enviromental regulations, too. It considered the oxygen supplies to the Teniente Converter and Peirce Smith converters; reverberatory furnace shut down as a smelting unit; and the Teniente converter slag treatment through a combined process between a Slag Settler furnace and flotation. Also it included the off-gas handling and treatment.

The composition of ferrous calcium silicate slag is located on the tie line between FeOx and calcium silicates in ternary FeOx-SiO2-CaO system. This slag has never been used as copper smelting slag because of high sulfidic copper solubility. However, when the dissolved copper in slag is just oxidic, as in direct white metal production or in converting process, this slag is quite attractive and can be regarded as the third copper smelting slag after fayalite and calcium ferrite slags. Based on the authors' studies on phase separation thermodynamics and laboratory experiments, it was clarified that the oxidic copper loss in this ferrous calcium silicate slag become the minimum not only %Cu in slag but also the total copper loss when the amount of slag is taken into account. It has been proven that calcium ferrite slag is suitable for continuous converting where the dissolved copper is oxidic, but there exist some drawbacks such as limited solubility of silica, low lead removability and too high fluidity. To overcome these difficulties accompanying traditional slags, ferrous calcium silicate slag is the hopeful alternative. In view of the general trends of modem copper smelting processes, the interesting features of this new slag system are discussed.

The thiosulfate leaching of gold generally requires the presence of a catalyst such as cupric tetraammine, Cu(NH3)42+, to obtain reasonable leaching rates and gold extractions. Unfortunately, this same catalyst that accelerates gold leaching also tends to accelerate thiosulfate oxidation to tetrathionate and other species. It is therefore imperative that a detailed understanding of the role of this catalyst and the factors affecting it is obtained. It is equally important for plant application that a method of assessing the catalyst be developed. In this work the role of the cupric tetraammine catalyst was studied using geochemical modeling for speciation prediction, thiosulfate leaching of gold ores, and chemical analyses of resulting leach solutions. It was found that the variables of pH, temperature, and the concentrations of ammonia, thiosulfate, and total copper all work in concert to affect the concentration of the cupric tetraammine species. It was also found that the presence of sufficient thiosulfate and cupric tetraammine was critical to the success of the leach.

"Red mud fiberization is a process with remarkable potential, alleviating environmental pressure by transforming an aluminum by-product into mineral wool, thus to various marketable products. A promising mineral wool process is molten slag fiberization via an impinging air jet, which avoids mechanical wear and rotating parts. The molten slag which remains after pig iron casting flows out of a heated ladle orifice at a high temperature (1600 °C) and adjustable flowrate, and forms a free-falling vertical jet which visibly radiates its excessive heat: at a given distance, a high-velocity impinging air jet meets the vertical melt jet perpendicularly (or at an angle), inducing intensive droplet generation, subsequent fiber elongation, collection and processing.This paper focuses on high-fidelity CFD modeling of the molten jet flow under external cooling: the model encompasses all physicochemical phenomena (melt laminar flow, radiative cooling) and considers several temperature-dependent slag transport properties in order to understand which operational degrees of freedom (manipulated variables) are useful to process optimization."

TiO2 and Ti/TiO2 thin films were deposited on a quartz substrate by laser ablation of Ti02 and Ti targets using Nd:YAG pulsed laser. After sulfurization of the Ti02 film in H2S or CS2 gas at 1273 K for 1 hour, the surface atomic structure was changed. Furthermore, the Ti/TiO2 film was successfully prepared by the subsequent ablation of Ti and TiO2 targets. The morphology and structure of the films were characterized by XRD, XPS and AFM analyses.

Electrowinning is directly impacted by many parameters that include electrolyte composition, voltage, current density, contact resistance, temperature, electrode spacing, and fluid flow as well as many other interrelated factors. The effects of these parameters are primarily related to thermodynamics, mass transport, and electrochemical kinetics. In this study thermodynamic, mass transport, and electrochemical kinetic equations are simultaneously solved to determine the effects of such parameters on electrowinning current efficiency, power consumption, electrodeposit morphology, and electrodeposit distribution. Modeling predictions will be compared with experimental results.

Modern life in inconceivable without zinc. Zinc provides the most cost-effective and environmentally efficient method of protecting steel from corrosion. Zinc is also used to power electric vehicles and computers, to make brass, automotive equipment, household appliances, fittings, tools and toys, and to support the building and construction industries. It is also used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, in rubber, in fertilisers and in animal feeds. The links between properties, applications and performance, as well as zinc demand and market dynamics, will be reviewed along with market development opportunities and successes. The presentation will also include a progress report on the five-year plan of the International Zinc Association to increase the global market for zinc, over and above the natural growth, by 500,000 tonnes/year by 2002.

In spite of the many well-known problems inherent in Pierce-Smith converting, it remains the dominant copper converting process. Continuous copper converting and direct concentrate to blister smelting have been commercially available for over 25 years and now produce approximately 15% of copper smelter production. The two fully commercialized continuous converting processes, Mitsubishi MI Process and Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting, and several emerging converting processes are reviewed with view of their potential, limitations, and environmental performance. Some myths regarding these technologies and Peirce-Smith converting are also challenged.

The zinc, lead and alumina contents in copper smelting slag are increasing with the increase in waste recycling. The recovery of base metals such as lead and zinc from copper converter slag is important from both an economical and environmental perspective. As a fundamental study of the metal recovery by reduction process, activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag under iron saturation at 1573K are derived from the data of slag-metal equilibrium experiments. On the basis of the obtained data, the activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag were compared with those of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx ternary system. Addition of alumina increases activities coefficient of ZnO and PbO in SiO2 rich side of the slag, and decreases them in CaO rich side.

"During the horizontal spin casting of rolls, vibrations and mould deformations seems to have a significant effect on the final quality of the product. Sources for vibrations can be found in the poor roundness and a static imbalance of the chill itself. The bending of the mould axis is also considered. Both, vibrations and axis bending, are used as an input for CFD simulations of the flow dynamics of the liquid metal inside the rotating cylinder. The aim is to study the feedback of the free surface behavior in terms of wave propagation and various wave shapes. Introduction The horizontal spin casting process (HSC) is a casting process that has several advantages over the traditional gravity casting processes. Centrifugally cast products have a high degree of metallurgical purity and homogeneous microstructure. A significant gain is observed for the rupture strength, the rupture strain, and the Young modulus. These properties naturally depend on the centrifugal force and thus, the best mechanical properties can be found at the largest distance from axis of rotation. However proper selection of the angular frequency has to be done in order to prevent the so-called ""metal rain"" i.e. metal droplets can fall down from the upper part of the cylinder due to a too weak centrifugal acceleration. In the same time excessive speeds can lead to the appearance of longitudinal cracks caused by the hoop stress in the initially solidified layer. From empirical knowledge other parameters have important influence on the casting products, it includes the pouring temperature, the pouring rate, the mould coating etc. Recently the presence of natural or forced vibrations have been identified as possible additional factors to be taken into account [1-2]."

"This paper describes the development and validation of a comprehensive multiscale modeling approach capable of predicting at the mesoscopic scale level the ingot solidification structure and solidification-related defects commonly occurring during the vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process. The approach consists of a coupling between a fully transient macroscopic code and a mesoscopic solidification structure code. The predictions from the multiscale model, including grain morphology and size, primary and secondary dendrite arm spacings, Laves and NbC phases, tendency for freckling and columnar-to-equiaxed transition, were validated against experimental measurements for a 20-inch diameter VAR alloy 718 ingots. The validated model was then used to investigate the effects of melting rate and ingot diameter on the solidification structure of VAR processed 718 ingots.IntroductionThe objective of this work was to develop a fully transient multiscale modeling approach to get an insight into the effect of processing parameters on the cast micro- and macro-structure during VAR processing. The developed model assists in achieving better control of the ingot solidification structure and to determine trends in the macrosegregation in these ingots. Another objective of this work was to analyze the transient effects of production rate and ingot size on the resultant ingot microstructures. This objective was met by first understanding the effects of the full range of processing parameters typically used in the VAR process. Processing parameters such as power input and heat extraction rate significantly influence the ingot liquid pool size and shape as well as the ingot structure, which in turn will greatly impacts the final ingot quality."

"This paper presents a new process for the precipitation of Sb and Bi present in copper refinery electrolytes in the presence of Pb02 (Chilean Patent No. 45,037). To establish the conditions under which the precipitating compounds form, it was necessary to evaluate the amount of PbCh consumed, antimony extraction efficiency, precipitate stability, reaction kinetics, diffraction analysis and X-ray fluorescence, separation of size, plus observation of the precipitates in the electron microscope. Preliminary tests were carried with synthetic copper refinery electrolyte, and then the final testing was done with electrolytes from Chilean refineries. This process provides a real alternative for the treatment of copper refinery electrolytes for the control of Sb and Bi in solution; it is very simple to operate and is low cost compared with competing processes.Introduction.A high quality copper cathode implies a cathode free of impurities. The electrorefining process seeks to eliminate these impurities from the copper anode (99.5% purity) by its dissolution in an acid electrolyte using chemical and electrochemical reactions. As a result of this process, a cathode (99.99% purity) is obtained. If the concentration of impurities in the electrolyte, from the dissolved anodes, begins to increase; particularly if the antimony concentration in the electrolyte increases up 500 ppm, the formation of floating slimes which are a major cause of contamination of the cathode is favoured. The most important impurities from the point of view of their effect on the quality of the cathode copper, are Ag, As, Sb, Bi, Pb, Se and Te. Silver is necessary for the control of Se and Te. To control all of these impurities, it is necessary to establish different methods or parameters of control in copper electrorefining. These parameters are anode composition, additives, purification of the electrolyte, current density, acidity, etc."

"During the argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) process high-chromium steel melts are decarburized by oxygen and inert gas injection through sidewall nozzles and a top-lance. Due to the large amount of the injected processing gas, low frequency oscillations of the vessel can be observed. It is suspected that these oscillations can influence the converter's structure. The exchange of forces between fluid and the surrounding vessel is the focus of this study. An oscillation model was developed and tested, one objective being to limit the computational effort which is necessary for fully coupled and time resolved CFD and FEM simulations. Experimental results obtained from water-model studies as well as from on-sight measurements are available and were used in order to validate the numerical results. The authors' intention is a contribution towards a more in depth understanding of the factors influencing vessel vibration during the AOD process.IntroductionDuring the last four decades the AOD process has been established as a reliable and efficient refining process in stainless steel making. The injection of process gases (O2, N2, Ar) through sidewall nozzles shows advantages in mixing effectiveness compared to other injection geometries e.g. bottom blowing [1]. Stainless steel grades contain usually more than 10% chromium. With decreasing carbon content during the decarburization periods the tendency of chromium oxidation increases according to the varying chemical equilibrium which depends on the partial pressure of carbon-monoxide (CO) in the gas phase. That's why oxygen is gradually replaced by inert gases, usually argon or nitrogen, in order to lower the CO partial pressure and thus to minimize chromium oxidation. Despite the high injection velocity of approximately Ma = 1, the kinetic energy of the gas jets is consumed within a short distance from the nozzle exits due to the large density ratio between gas and melt of approximately 1:8000. With increasing distance to the nozzle exit, the initial horizontal velocity of the gas jet decreases and due to buoyancy force motion of the detached bubbles turns into a vertical direction. Subsequently a gas plume develops with its typical conical shape described by various authors [1-4]. Due to the drag force between gas bubbles and melt also the liquid phase is forced into a vertical motion. Near the free surface and the wall regions the melt flow is deflected in different directions. Subsequently, the typical flow pattern in the AOD vessel arises, as sketched in Figure 1 and described in literature [5-9]."

"Recovery of precious metals (PMs) is a present topic, as they are used almost in every electronicelectric device. Gold is the second PM in order of consumption (following silver) and it is almost ubiquitary in electronics where it mainly finds application to produce bonding wires in integrated circuits and as a coating for contacts and connectors. Given this, discontinued electronic and, with a minor role, electric devices may represent a primary source of PMs as gold mines or jewelery wastes.At present the recovery of gold from such waste is generally accomplished by two strategies: by oxidative thermal treatment followed by metallurgical or chemical processes or by cyanide chemical etching; both techniques do not represent the optimum as the first one deserves a great amount of energy and non-combustible pollutant slag and fumes are produced, while the second procedure comports the use of a highly pollutant agent as cyanide.The aim of this work is the characterization of different electronics scraps to evaluate the gold concentration, and the selective recovery of this metal using enviromentally-friendly techniques. In particular, a new process was developed in order to overcome such environmental and efficiency issues. The process reaches the goal of detach the gold film from the substrate by selective leaching of the supporting metal.IntroductionThe treatment of waste from electrical and electronic equipments is a current topic as their role in modern life is increasing. The disposal of such waste represents both an environmental and an economical concern due to the vast amount of both precious and non precious metals.The use of precious metals (PM) in this field is of primary importance given PM’s unique properties, which give to each of them a specific and irreplaceable role. Silver is the most used, with a demand of over 5000 tonnes per year, mainly for switches and contacts in electric appliances. Gold is the second PM in order of consumption (over 250 tonnes per year and 8% of the total demand) and it is almost ubiquitous in electronics where it finds application to produce bonding wires in integrated circuits and as a coating for contacts and connectors. It is also used as solder in integrated circuits (in alloy with tin) or for wide coatings where it ensures protection against corrosion. Palladium, platinum, rhodium and iridium follow in order of consumption [1- 3]."

"A new near net shape casting process, OHNO Continuous Casting (OCC), has been recently developed. In this process, molten metal is fed into a heated mold maintained at a temperature above the solidification temperature of the metal being cast. Solidification begins from the central core of the casting rather than the wall of the mold. With the heated mold, the formation of crystals on the mold wall is prevented and solidification occurs out of contact with the mold surface. This produces near net shaped products with smooth, mirror-like surfaces and unidirectional grain structures free from cavities, porosity and segregation. Any crystals formed at the beginning of solidification decrease in number as solidification progresses and eventually a single crystal product is obtained. This process is applicable to any metal alloys, converting them into new materials with superior properties and quality.IntroductionAs a result of growing technical demands for more advanced and diversified materials, the OHNO Continuous Casting (OCC) technology has found many new applications in industry. Considerable interest in the process has been shown in Japan and other countries because of its distinct ability to:produce a single crystal, (1)produce a remarkably clean cast surface without a witness mark,provide extremely good ductility,and reduce casting defects and segregation.This paper provides an overview of the principle of the OCC process and describes the remarkable characteristics of the material produced by this method."
