"Characterization of the microstructure and revealing dendrites in the microstructure and also measuring the dendrites arm spacing and the distribution of silicon were studied in various pieces of compacted graphite cast irons with 0.17, 0.185, 0.2, 0.22 and 0.24 percent of mischmetal. Black-white and color metallography (quantitative and qualitative) were carried out on the various steps of the cast samples. Distribution of silicon was studied quantitatively using spot analysis with scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, effects of two variables (cooling rate and mischmetal percentage) on dendrites arm spacing were investigated.In order to color metallography, the samples were plunged into a boiling solution of 18% KOH, 9% NaOH and 9% picric acid in distilled water. It was inferred that the microstructure coloration varies according to the sequence: green-->red-->yellow-->blue-->dark brown->light brown as the silicon content decreases. After observing dendrites, dendrites arm spacing was measured. In this method, it seems to be possible to predict the mechanical properties of compacted graphite cast irons by knowing dendrites arm spacing and without any destructive testing. After studying the two variables, it was concluded that dendrites arm spacing decreases as the amount of mischmetal increases and it increases as the cooling rate increases.IntroductionIn general, detecting of primary austenite dendrites is not possible in cast irons due to their solidification system. Observing the dendrites in the room temperature is possible only in those gray cast irons that contain type D graphite. With collecting data of dendrites arm spacing (DAS) measurements, it could be possible to achieve the mechanical properties of cast irons without any destructive testing. In this research by applying a particular method, primary austenite dendrites and also distribution of silicon in the microstructure has been observed."

"Until now FDM-Techniques have been widely used for Modeling Solidification Processes in Castings. Often a rigid, regular type of enmeshment (cubes, , --) have been used. This has the advantage of low CPU-costs, but the disadvantage of a zig-zag presentation of the interface between the casting and the mold. The last point is the reason why FEM-Techniques, giving the possibility of a true presentation of the shape in the enmeshment, are increasingly used. The disadvantage is the high CPU-costs. In this paper, a technique is presented, which uses the FDM-Mesh with the zig-zag presentation of shape and ADI-Algorithms to calculate temperatures and gradients. The new idea is that the calculated parameters are not presented related to the mesh in which they are calculated, but displayed using the true shape of the casting. Such an advantage of both low CPU-costs and shape correct presentation of the calculated results are achieved. IntroductionThe main reason for using a regular type of enmeshment is that it gives the possibility, via ADI-Algorithms, of obtaining a very fast FDM-Technique. The technique presented by P.R. Sahm and P. N. Hansen (1984), and also used by E. Flender (1985), is numerically so stable that average time steps, at least 200 times larger than the limit given by the explicit FDM-Technique, can be applied. To obtain reasonably good results, average time steps in the range of 20 to 50 times the explicit limit seems to be applicable. It should be pointed out,however, that FDM-Techniques can be used on arbitrary nets, the disadvantages being the same as for the FEM-Techniques. This has, among others, been discussed by P.R. Sahm and P.N. Hansen (1984)."

Copper smelting to form blister in one single step has been possible for a long time even from low grade concentrates. In spite of obvious benefits, it has been economically viable only with few special raw materials having high enough Cu/Fe and Cu/S ratio. Outokumpu Blister Flash Smelting is currently applied at three operations, and three others will be commissioned in the near future. With typical chalcopyrite concentrates two main obstacles have prevented wider adaptation of direct blister processing: slag formation and heat generation. Oxygen potential in the reaction shaft must be high in order to produce blister with targeted sulfur content below 1%. When large amount of iron is oxidized, as well as sulfur, copper is inevitably also oxidized into slag. High copper amount in substantial tonnages of slag lead on to costly down stream recovery operations to obtain discardable slag. Almost complete oxidation of sulfur and iron releases a high amount of heat which traditionally has been solved by lowering oxygen enrichment of the blast leading on to oversized off-gas line and acid plant. One challenge in direct blister smelting relates to the attack of aggressive high-copper containing slag against furnace refractory lining. In continuously operated Outokumpu Direct Blister Flash Smelting this is taken care of by preventing vigorous melt movement in the settler. Stable bath conditions and stationary slag against refractory lining enable the formation of a protective autogenous layer between aggressive slag and vulnerable refractory. These direct blister smelting challenges are addressed from equipment and process development point of view. New solutions to overcome the obstacles are presented and discussed.

"The pig iron from steel manufacturing plants contains a high concentration of vanadium-bearing materials smelted with iron ore. During the oxidation process of the molten pig iron with oxygen lances, vanadium transfers to the slag. In this research, recovery of vanadium from LD (Linz-Donawitz) converter slag of steelmaking plant was investigated. The leaching residue was characterized by XRD and XRF techniques. The maximum vanadium recovery was achieved at optimum leaching conditions of 70 °C, S/L: 1/15, sodium hydroxide concentration: 3 M and leaching time: 150 minutes. The dissolution rate increased with rising sodium hydroxide concentration and temperature and decreasing particle size. The experimental data are treated graphically to explain the kinetics of the vanadium recovery process using shrinking core model (SCM). As a result, the controlling regimes in the SCM were analyzed separately using liquid film diffusion control, solid product diffusion control, and reaction control mechanisms.IntroductionVanadium is commercially important as a constituent of several alloys and catalysts. Nowadays, vanadium is mostly recovered as a by-product from secondary sources or from industrial waste streams such as titaniferrous magnetite, fly ash, spent catalysts, and petroleum coke. Steelmaking operations are specifically concerned by this problem due to the production of a huge quantity of by-products [1]. These by-products, including LD converter slag, sludge, fly ash, spent catalyst, ash, and alloyed scrap, contain a notable amount of heavy metals which may cause environmental problems. Solvent extraction is one of the techniques being increasingly used for the recovery of vanadium [2]. Apart from vanadium ore, secondary resources such as titanmagnetite, ilmenite and slag from the ferrous industry are a major source of supply. The pig iron from steel manufacturing contains a majority of vanadium-bearing materials smelted with iron ore. In a heat resistant shaking ladle the molten pig iron is oxidized with oxygen lances, causing the vanadium to be transferred to the slag. Normally, the vanadium in LD converter steel slag (coming from Linz-Donawitz steelmaking process) is ca. 5% as vanadium pentoxide (V2O5). This slag is the world's principal raw material for vanadium production [3, 4]. Moskalyk and Alfantazi [4] reported that a roast-leach process is used in South Africa for the production of vanadium oxides from magnetite ores while some of the slag was converted to ferrovanadium. A portion of the slag was exported to Europe for the production of vanadium oxide. The researchers mentioned that alkaline roasting was the main process at that time employed to extract vanadium pentoxide from vanadium slags."

"The leaching process is the first step when recycling BF slag as raw material for some other products. While studying the kinetics of the BF slag leaching process, a fractal phenomenon was found, which indicated some interesting mechanism in the process. The result suggested a new understanding of the leaching process in detail which useful for the industrial applicationIntroductionTypical composition (wt. %) of blast furnace slag varied in a pretty wide range: SiO2 30–40, Al2O3 10–20, CaO 30–40, MgO 5–10.The ground granulated slag is commonly used as base of roadway (mixed with natural inert for paving, soil stabilization, etc.) or one of the resources of Portland cements because of its good hydraulic activity [1]. To recycle the slag economically, the selective recovery of some components of the slag may be considered. As main components exist in the slag, silica [2, 3 and 4] and alumina [4] recovery was first considered.While recovering of silica from the slag, silica gels are recovered selectively from the leaching solution deriving from the treatment of the slag with waste sulfuric acid. After separation of the exhausted solid of leaching, the silica gel is precipitated from the solution at pH 3.2. Although the silica gels obtained by this procedure contain many impurities and need some more work afterward, it is the first and important step for the process.In the prior work [5], silica extraction using blast furnace slag had been investigated, focused on the pH value of selectively silica extraction. In the present work, kinetics of the leaching process was focused. It is important to design an economical process.ExperimentalThe composition of the slag and the calcined gels has been determined by a LINK860 (Oxford Instruments, Oak Ridge, TN) energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) in conjunction with a CAMBRIDGE S250-M2 (Cambridge Instrument Ltd., Cambridge, U.K.) scanning electron microscope(SEM). The leaching of slag and the precipitation of silica gels have been conducted at atmospheric pressure in a stirred reactor placed at temperature controlled by a heated water bath."

"The aim of the present work is to investigate the recovery of nickel from obsolete cell phones printed circuit boards. The printed circuit boards were firstly submitted to a grinding process and then leached in sulfuric acid. Nickel was extracted from aqueous solution using Cyanex 272. Aqueous/organic ratio was 1/1. The effect of both pH and modifier addition on selectivity of extraction was investigated.IntroductionCurrently, electric and electronic equipments (EEE) have become a necessity to the modern life. Associated with this necessity comes the continuous and increasing replacement of those equipments by new ones. The accelerated technology advances are responsible for the generation of electric and electronic waste. This waste can be dangerous not only to human health but also to the environment. Waste of electric and electronic equipments (WEEE) has a variety of components and metals in its composition becoming a potential pollutant to the environment when not properly discarded. Its wrong disposal causes a loss of materials that could be recovered and reused. Therefore WEEE treatment is an important matter because it can assist the reduction of waste generated and the recovery of valuable metals.Printed circuit board (PCBs) is an essential component of EEE and is typically very complex from a chemical point of view. Several metals may be present in its composition, such as cooper, nickel, iron, zinc, lead, tin and silver1''. This characteristic hinders the development of a simple treatment, making it necessary the application of chemical and mechanical processing for their recycling'4'. The UN estimates that approximately 20 to 50 million of tonnes of WEEE are generated worldwide each year."

"In China, hazardous e-waste—cathode ray tube (CRT) glass is usually left around, and it is likely to contact with water resources directly. To identify the real leaching characteristics and bioavailabilities of heavy metals Pb and Ba contained in CRT glass in the nature environment, experiments were carried out by simulating the nature environment. The results indicated that Pb and Ba contained in CRT glass were stable in most conditions, which only showed obvious leaching toxicities in strong acidic/alkali conditions. EDTA and DTPA extractable Pb and Ba amounts were extremely high, e.g., EDTA extractable Pb of color funnel glass was up to 1960.07 ìg/kg, indicating that the potential bioavailability of waste CRT glass is very high. IntroductionIn recent years, cathode ray tube (CRT) contained monitors or TV sets has been substituted by novel and better electronic and electric equipments such as LCD and PDP, leaving huge amounts of end-of-life CRTs. 50~85% of the total weight of a computer monitor or a TV set is glass'1-21, which was classified to three categories: black & white glass (BW), color panel glass (CP) and color funnel glass (CF), according to their chemical compositions'3' (Méar et ai, 2006). In order to provide shielding from X-rays generated during the picture projection process, lead, barium and strontium oxides were used in the glass. In general, a color CRT contains 1.6-3.2 kg of lead'4'. Concerning the high toxicity of lead, these waste glasses have posed a potential risk to the environment and human health and researches on these glasses have been attracting wide and tense attention currently."

"The high-magnetization microspheres of Fe3O4 encapsulated with S1O2 and T1O2 layers (Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2) were prepared. The microspheres were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. These high-magnetization microspheres could be readily dispersed by shaking whereas they could be rapidly separated from the aqueous solution simply by applying an external magnetic field. The two shells of S1O2 and T1O2 protected the iron oxide well and the microspheres were stable in acid and base solutions. Therefore, they have a good potential for the enrichment of phosphopeptides or photocatalytic activity. They could also be used to remove metal ions from waste water.IntroductionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is the most commonly used separation technique for its simplicity, consumption of small volumes of organic solvent, and the ability to achieve a higher enrichment factor. The quest for new adsorbents is an important factor in improving analytical sensitivity and precision in SPE techniques. To date, many novel adsorbents, such as nanometer-sized materials, carbon nanotubes, mesoporous materials and magnetic nanoparticles have been employed in SPE.Magnetic polymeric microspheres, an interesting advanced composite material, have received increasing attention in the past few decades because of their unique physical and chemical properties and their potential for use in applications in various fields [1]. Magnetic microspheres consisting of an iron oxide core and a silica shell have attracted particular attention for their unique magnetic response, low cytotoxicity, and chemically modifiable surface. The core-shell magnetic silica microspheres have shown great potential in the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine for applications such as cell labeling and separation, enzyme and protein separations, targeted drug delivery, and magnetic ferrofluids hyperthermia."

"A procedure that is being studied as a potential method for correct disposal of industrial wastes by incorporation on common clay bodies in the fabrication of structural ceramic products as bricks, blocks and roof tiles. The objective of this paper is to present the results obtained with mixtures of unburned sanitary ware wastes with a common clay from Jundiai, São Paulo, Brazil. Preliminary tests of incorporation (1,0% to 30,0% in weight) were made with hand formed spherical test bodies. With the proportion that presented spheres with the higher compression strength after drying and after firing (950°C) prismatic samples were extruded. Based on the ceramic properties of those mixtures an industrial test was performed. Six hundred hallow blocks containing 30% waste were fabricated and presented ceramic properties similar to those without incorporation. Introduction The sanitary ware segment has a very great prominence in South America, placing Brazil as one of the greater producers of the world.. Inside the country, the city of Jundiai, in the State of São Paulo is the greater producer region of this ware. Great part of the material is destined to exportation and daily it is produced high number parts. High exportation requirements make that the amount of powder waste rejects reach astronomical volumes. Until the moment too small part of that material it is re-taken with advantage, because in the own segment, there is not an economic viability, by the fact of the exigencies concerning the quality of the final product [1]. If from one side it exists that material that at the moment is deposited in landfills, or stored at the patio’s factories, from the other side the exigency of adopting exploitation rules, recycling and obedience to Laws relative to the environment as ABNT 10400, therefore it is a material that if well studied, it will certainty have a noble destiny [1]."

"As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick Gold's autoclaves/CIL facility at Goldstrike, Nevada, blanking the gold cyanide adsorbing native carbon in the ore with hard (m.p. >55°C) paraffin wax was proposed. To avoid interference from other ore constituents in the exploratory testwork, commercial activated carbon was substituted for native carbon in the ore to establish the best conditions for de-activation of carbon with molten wax.IntroductionDouble refractory gold ores present two barriers to gold extraction. The first is generally a physical barrier: the gold is encapsulated or dispersed in a matrix which is impervious to the gold lixiviant. In most cases, including the Goldstrike deposit, this involves a pyrite or arsenopyrite matrix, although minor gold may also be dispersed in competent silica (quartz) or iron oxides. Gold can be rendered accessible by oxidative destruction of such sulphide matrices. At Goldstrike this is practised by roasting and autoclave oxidation (POX). It is the latter route to which this paper refers.The second barrier refers more correctly to gold recovery. Gold may be extracted from the autoclave oxidized solids with cyanide, forming a gold cyanide complex. One characteristic of this complex is that it adsorbs on graphitic surfaces. This behaviour is used advantageously on a large scale by gold millers, who use man made activated carbon particles to remove the gold from solution during leaching: the Carbon-In-Leach, or CIL process. The gold bearing carbon particles are larger than the ore solids and can be separately recovered by screening. Goldstrike uses the CIL technology to recover gold after autoclave oxidation."

"During the leaching of anodic slimes, tellurium dissolves into the leach liquor together with copper and must be removed before the solution is sent to liberator cells for copper recovery. Prior to the installation of autoclaves, tellurium was precipitated using raw slimes that caused a recirculation of tellurium in the leaching circuit. After autoclaves were installed the old leach tanks were converted into tellurium reactors utilizing copper chips, steam and agitation to form a copper telluride precipitate. Tellurium levels of less than 10 rng/L are achieved in a timely manner.IntroductionThe electrolytic refining of copper consists of an electrolytic cell provided with an anode of impure copper, a cathode of substantially pure copper (starter sheet) and an electrolyte made of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid [1]. When a direct electrical current is passed between the anode and cathode inside the cell, the impure copper anode dissolves in the electrolyte and pure copper is plated onto the cathode. During this operation, many of the impurities are deposited on the bottom of the cell as an anodic slime residue composed of insoluble chemical compounds. Slimes are a major source of rare and precious metals in the copper industry [2-5],In the Amarillo Copper Refinery (ACR), the anodic copper slimes are sent to the Precious Metals department in order to extract and then refine the gold, silver, platinum and palladium from them. The remaining impurities, in the form of a soda slag or copper slag are sent to the Hayden smelter for further processing. Copper telluride is sent to the Selenium/Tellurium department inside the plant for selenium and tellurium recovery. During the leaching process of the anodic slimes, copper, tellurium, and other metal species in the slimes are dissolved into leach liquor that cannot be returned to the tankhouse unless the tellurium concentration is below 10 mg/L."

"There is a wide choice of different types of woven filter media for hundreds of different filtration applications. Factors such as type of fiber, synthetic polymers used, weave style, fabric finishes and fabrication techniques all play an important part in selecting the best choice for a specific type of filter and process application. The purpose of this paper is to offer some basic knowledge of these factors and how they can impact the performance of a filter, the life of the media and the overall cost of operation through case studies of actual plant filtration applications.IntroductionThe use of woven filter cloth in liquid/solid separation applications is generally well known. Woven filter cloth, by the nature of the weaving process, offers unique consistency and repeatability when compared to some other filter media such as needled felts, papers, sintered structures and knitted cloth. This unique consistency and repeatability is particularly applicable to woven filter cloth produced using monofilament fibers. These fibers are consistent in shape and form the basis for a woven cloth with predictable pore size and throughput characteristics. Woven filter cloth can be used in most wet filtration applications. Typical examples are the separation of chemical and pharmaceutical solids from process liquors, waste stream solids capture, liquid foods clarification, mining separations, and polymer filtration.EnvironmentOne of the first considerations is the environmental demand of the given process. Though it is tempting to look immediately at the particles in a filtration process, it is often better to consider some of the more basic needs of the system. There are numerous materials available, both synthetic and wire cloth. Each has its own unique set of properties."

"Poplar cotton, a cellulosic material, was found to adsorb metals ions effectively. In the present study, the biosorption characteristics of Pb(II) onto poplar cotton, were evaluated as a function of pH, contact time, biomass dosage, initial concentration and temperature. Within the pH range investigated (1.0-6.0), the optimal pH value suitable for the uptake of Pb(II) was determined. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model is around 0.52mol kg for the poplar cotton sorbent. Equilibration is achieved in 60min for the studied concentrations. Results suggest that the poplar cotton can be directly used as an effective and low-cost biosorbent for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution.IntroductionHigh value utilization of various biowastes produced in agricultural, forestry, fishing industries, etc. have attracted great interest from many researchers [1], Biomass, due to its easy availability, great abundance, low cost, easy processing, eco-friendliness and biodegradability, has exhibited exciting potential for being used as raw materials for the preparation of many new hi-tech functional products [2]. For example, using biowastes to synthesize sorbents for application in the removal of toxic substances such as dyes [3], heavy metals from the waste water [4] or in the recovery of valuable metals [5] from the ore tailings and secondary metals resources has made great progress in last decade. In present study, poplar cotton, a kind of white light fluff of poplar trees, like that of dandelion, usually flying in the air each spring was tested as a biosorbent for the remove lead ions from the water. It may also provide some good ideas for new sorbent design. Lead, as one of the typical poisonous heavy metals, for its typical toxicity and extensive pollution, was chosen to test the adsorption behavior of poplar cotton in aqueous solutions."

Although many works have been reported on the semisolid casting, the mold filling behavior of semi-solid alloys has not been so well understood. This paper compares the physical and numerical simulation results on the mold filling behavior. Physical simulation was performed by using solid-water mixture. The numerical simulation was made under the assumption of one phase flow with an effective viscosity. It was found that the solid particles stabilize the flow greatly if the kaction solid exceeds about 0.4, because viscosity increases greatly. The overall flow behavior can be estimated by the numerical simulation. Interesting flow behavior was also found which can not be observed in the case of one phase flow and which is difficult to simulate by the one phase flow assumption.

"The beneficiation of poor manganese ores containing phosphate gangue is very difficult by conventional processes, because of the similarities in the physico-chemical properties of the constituent minerals. The shaking table gravity concentration process and concentrated strong acid selective intensified leaching process were used for dephosphorisation of Yunnan manganese ore. The leaching process was effective. The effects of intensified leaching time, solid-liquid ratio and particle size were investigated. The relevant leaching factors were optimized as -0.125+0.088 mm particle size with 68% nitric acid for 24 h when using a solid-liquid ratio of 1:1 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, the P/Mn ratio was reduced from 0.0107 to 0.0056, and the grade of manganese was increased from 12.32% to 42.76%. The dissolution of manganese during leaching was negligible.IntroductionManganese and its compounds are widely used in the iron and steel industry as deoxidation and desulfurization agents and as alloying additives [1-2]. Because of the increase in demand, low grade refractory manganese ores are becoming a new source. Many Chinese manganese ores are high in phosphorus, which cannot be used directly for metallurgical purposes. This occurs because phosphorus enters into the metal phase during smelting and its presence sharply deteriorates the mechanical properties of the metal [3-4].Kanungo and Sant [3] investigated the dephosphorization of phosphorus-rich manganese ores by selective leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. They observed that leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid (0.1-0.6M) could reduce the phosphorus contents to the specified limit of 0.12%. Ye [5] investigated dephosphorization of high-phosphorus manganese ore of the Huayuan type. Using high intensity magnetic separation, roasting and leaching with acid for dephosphorization, as used in the industry, a 40.15% manganese concentrate with a P/Mn ratio of 0.0037 was obtained. Yimin [6] investigated magnetic separation followed by inverse flotation of high-phosphorus manganese ore, and found that the P/Mn ratio could be reduced from 0.046 to 0.002."

To solve the environmental and financial problems of the traditional Rotary Salt Furnace process, a new salt-free method for aluminum dross and scrap melting, ALUREC, has been developed by AGA and its partners, Hoogovens Aluminium and MAN GHH. AGA and Hoogovens Aluminium developed the main process concept and jointly carried out trials on pilot plant scale. Owing to excellent results" the partners decided to jointly erect a commercial scale test plant. The order for the design and erection of the furnace went to MAN GHH. The three companies designed the test plant and began operation in the spring of 1994. The results have been excellent and the process is expected to be a technical and commercial success.

The sensor is capable of 3-D mapping of surfaces, based on a series of precise range measurements from large distances (up to 20 m). Other features include the ability to operate under adverse environmental conditions involving very high gamma radiation (3xI04 Gy/hr), ultra-high-vacuum (<I0-5 Pa), and high temperature (200°C). The paper describes the basic principles of the sensor, together with experimental results obtained with the sensor. The ability of the sensor for remote rendering of ""visual quality"" images without the need for any external illumination is also illustrated.IntroductionMeasurement of the features of large area surfaces (-1500 m2) to sub-millimeter accuracy, from relatively large distances (20 m), is necessary in the case of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER -a 1500 MW fusion reactor that is currently in the design phase). Furthermore, the measurements may have to be performed after the reactor is temporarily shut down. During such shut-downs, the ITER in-vessel environment will be highly radioactive due to neutron activation of the reactor wall (gamma radiation field of 3xl04 Gy/hr), the vessel will be maintained under ultra-clean vacuum conditions (<10-5 Pa), and the plasma facing surfaces will be maintained at elevated temperature (200°C). Therefore, the precision measurements must be conducted remotely, and because of the large dimensions of the fusion reactor and the limited number of access ports, the measurements must be done from large distances. The reactor vessel is a large toroid. Fig. 1 shows the cross section of the toroidal vacuum vessel, and the location of the metrology probe. Because of the very large surface area involved, fast scanning capability is also needed to reduce the reactor down-time."

"Mathematical process models can be applied in several different ways to serve industry by inducing beneficial changes to process operation. This paper attempts to summarize the different uses, types, and attributes of these models, and to offer some ideas to consider when developing, using, and reporting on them. Process models range from empirical to mechanistic in nature and vary in complexity from simple analytical solutions to coupled, 3-D transient numerical simulations. They are classified here according to the way in which they are implemented in practice, viz. fully-online models, semi-online models, off-line models, and literature models. The purpose of the model should dictate how choices are made during its development. Ways to validate and compare the model with experiments are suggested. Examples are taken in the context of the author's experience in modeling the continuous casting of steel.IntroductionThe objective of this paper is to provide a partial introduction for this symposium by discussing some basic aspects of the application of mathematical process models in industry. Essentially, the aim is to explore how process models are used to benefit industry, and to offer some general comments and suggestions, based on the experience of the author, on how models can best meet this goal.This work is concerned with process models, which consist of systems of mathematical equations and constants that are solved on a computer to make quantitative predictions about some aspect(s) of the process. The specific variables required as input data and generated as output data are important features of the model. The equations often derive from a numerical solution to one or more differential equations and their boundary conditions. The model also includes the constants, which represent material properties, empirical relationships, and other knowledge about the process, and usually require considerable effort to obtain. Thus, general purpose commercial software packages, (ie. finite-element or finite-difference based codes), are not models in this context. They are useful tools, however, serving as frameworks for the development of process models."

"Brazil is among the few countries with potential for developing all sources of renewable forms of energy. In particular, the country is leading the world efforts of substituting petroleum based fuels for biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel. Most of the Brazilian petroleum, which has now achieved self sufficiency, is extracted from offshore wells located at the north region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. In view of the future depletion of petroleum, the State University of the Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) has created a Center for Alternative Energies (NEAL) to carry out R&D programs on renewable forms of energy. Today, the main project of the NEAL/UENF is a model park for generation of renewable forms of energy. The objective of this work is to present the structural concept of the park and discuss its contribution in terms of scientific, technological, economical and environmental benefitsIntroductionEnergy is presently a key issue in the world agenda for sustained development and environmental protection. It is of common agreement that the existing status of increasing use of fossil fuels, mainly petroleum, natural gas and coal will not only cause depletion of these resources with a consequent elevation in price but also climate changes, especially global warming. In fact, the humankind may be already facing an irreversible situation of climate alterations as well as reduction of conventional sources of energy. The worse predictions foreseen by specialists, still for this coming century, are dramatic disasters due to catastrophic weather in association with a profound energetic crisis. This scenario may, however, be avoided by actions that could effectively tackle the core of the problem. These actions have been suggested and discussed by scientists and leading authorities, especially in international symposia [1-3]. In particular, the Kyoto Protocol proposed goals for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as well as a mechanism of carbon credits to allow for decreasing CO2 content in the atmosphere without affecting industrial production [3]."
