The leaching and bulk decomposition of sulfide minerals is of enormous commercial importance in several areas of the minerals industry. These include: direct leaching of ores or concentrates for the recovery of the contained metal values; decomposition of sulfides to recover associated values such as encapsulated gold; and the potentially hazardous oxidation of sulfides in waste disposal facilities. A significant challenge to successful future developments in these areas is to improve our fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of the chemical, electrochemical, and bacterially-mediated interactions between sulfides and aqueous solutions. The paper summarizes current understanding of these mechanisms, and discusses promising new directions for research.

"During the last ten years great strides have been made, on the Mesabi Range, in the practice of beneficiating low grade iron ore material. By .beneficiation is meant all methods of removing impurities, and raising the iron content to a point where it can be sold in open market, the principal impurities being silica and moisture. The • general processes to which low grade iron ores are amenable are as follows:1. Thermal(a) Drying ; removes hydroscopic or atmospheric moisture. .(b) Calcining; removes carbon dioxide from iron carbonate, molecular water from hydrated hematites, and atmospheric moisture.Roasting; removes sulphur, carbon dioxide, molecular water and atmospheric moisture.Agglomeration; primarily for the purpose of preparing finely divided material for blast furnace; briquetting and sintering.2. MechanicalScreen sizing; removes rock and sand.Classification; removes sand by means of currents of water of varying velocities.Log washing; removes fine sand.Jigging; removes larger particles of impurities than is possible by log washing. Certain types of jigs remove fine sand.Reciprocating tables; recover fine iron particles from sand discarded by above processes.Magnetic separation; applicable to the commercial separation of the magnetic oxide of iron from gangue material. From a scientific standpoint it is possible to separate certain hematites and limonites from their gangue:(g) Miscellaneous processes; comprise dry concentration, electro-static separation and other processes."

"INTRODUCTION Productivity in Open Pit mines depend on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in Open Pit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad-hoc methodology for analyzing the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are sub-par with the expected production standards. STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle or the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with pre-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and determine corrective actions: • Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process; • Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste, and how they help to identify equipment performance; • Develop software interfaces to visualize the Alert System in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor; and • Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an Open Pit mine. PROBLEM STATEMENT Transporting material in Open Pit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity and subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded, and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization. For the identification of delays, a context-based system could be required in order to help optimizing the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage, and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

The US Bureau of Mines is investigating the cobalt and manganese resource of the West-Central Arkansas district through field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation and hydrometallurgical tests. Located within the Ouachita Mountains, these structurally-controlled deposits occur along the axes of anticlines that form the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of manganese oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilomelane. Cobalt is concentrated within lithiophorite, a particular Mnoxide phase. Chemical analyses of head samples reported up to 25% Mn and 0.17% Co. Magnetic separation yielded products containing up to 41 % Mn and 0.22% Co at recoveries of 95% and 93%, respectively.

Mill flotation tailings impounded at the Gooseberry Mine site between 1976 and 1984 were determined to be an economic source of gold and silver recoverable by standard heap leach technology in conjunction with feed agglomeration. Metal recovery at 85 percent Au, 75 percent Ag is attained on properly agglomerated (pelletized) tailings which average 85 percent -75 micron. Because the impounded tailings averaged over 18 percent moisture (32 percent moisture maximum at depth) in place behind the storage dam, the mining method, mixing and agglomeration technique, and materials handling practice were major considerations in making this operation a financial success.

Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy carried out in real time has been applied to identify surface species formed during gold leaching in chloride and thiosulfate media. Chloride ion is adsorbed prior to the gold dissolution potential, but its coverage is significantly diminished at the beginning of leaching. A gold chloride band is again observed when dissolution is rapid, together with bands characteristic of AuC14- ions in solution. With thiosulfate, a thin gold sulfide layer is formed slowly in the potential region where leaching occurs. At higher potentials, thiosulfate is oxidized to sulfur and sulfate, both products being identified by Raman spectroscopy.

This paper examines the chimney occurrences in the Hanna Coal Field, Wyoming. Chimney caving is defined, previously proposed mechanisms involved in the development of a chimney are critically reviewed, and factors controlling chimney cave are identified. The main portion of this paper deals with the identification and characterization of chimney subsidence due to underground coal mining in the Hanna Mining District. In an attempt to characterize the subsidence, sink-hole occurrences are correlated with the depth of coal, thickness of mined-out beds, mining methods, nature of overburden, structural geology, and hydrology. Most sinkholes in the Hanna Basin appear to be conical in profile, with the apex upward. The average diameter is 15 meters (50 feet), with an average depth of 11 feet. Most have developed above an overburden of less than 61 meters (200 feet). The average mining height to width ratio is 5. Much of the chimney development is governed by the thickness and character of the overburden, the width and height of the mine opening, and the in situ state of stress.

Artificial intelligence research has produced several tools for commercial application. Some of the techniques that are widely used today include neural networks, fuzzy logic and expert systems. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are excellent predictive, pattern recognition and data analysis tools. In the mining industry, ANN techniques are being used commercially for real-time process-control applications. Modeling of spatial data, ore-reserve estimation, tunnel design, long wall-stability prediction and geologic roof classification are additional applications in which neural networks have been applied successfully. In this study, a standard back propagation algorithm was used to train a series of neural networks for a real-world predictive task. After training and optimizing the neural network architecture, the performance of the network is measured on an independent validation set. Results indicate a mean error of less than 1 % between the actual and predicted values. A neural network model was developed for learning the spatial continuity of a mineral field and, consequently, for predicting sulfur values for given coordinates. The neural network not only performed satisfactorily, but in some cases performed even better than the kriging model.

Due to their similar surface properties, it is not always easy to separate carbonate minerals from other salt type minerals by froth flotation. A particular example is the difficulty of separating dolomite impunities from phosphate minerals. Such challenging fundamental and practical problems have inspired several research efforts in various laboratories around the globe to find methods for economically removing the dolomite. However, a universal and cost effective process is not in commercial use. In this paper, a new process for separation of carbonate minerals (dolomite or calate) from other associated minerals is presented. Differential solubility of carbonates in slightly acidic solution is utilized to generate micro GO, bubbles at the carbonate mineral/ water interface. Particle (e.g., dolomite)/ bubble aggregates float to the surface leaving phosphate concentrate with low MgO content. Interestingly, up to 6.0 mm particles can be floated by such micro bubble/particle aggregates. Different sutface-active agents were tested to stabilize the bubbles. Results of these tests are presented and the mechanisms involved are discussed.

The determination of the precision of reserve estimates (tonnage, grade, quantity of metal) for an entire deposit or a large block in a deposit has received some attention in the early developments of geostatistics. A general formula to derive the estimation variance of any linear combination of a large number of sample values can be found in any geostatistical textbook like David (1977) or Journel and Huijbregts (1978). A particular case of this general formula is of course the kriging of the entire deposit. However, besides the technical difficulty of dealing with many samples the application of this formula necessitates the knowledge of the covariance between any two samples in the deposit. This is quite unrealistic in the usual case of limited stationarity where the assumption of a covariance or a variogram just function of the distance vector between two samples is only valid for samples within the same area of restricted size.

High tonnage hoisting of materials by vertical conveyors through deep shafts is a relatively new concept in mining that is proving to be effective. The development of the Pocketlift® belt by Metso Flexowell, located in Moers, Germany, enabled the installation of a deep shaft vertical conveyor in 2002. This application followed years of design and operational experience gained in medium-depth shafts around the world. The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. This paper summarizes a three phase face ventilation study which was conducted from September 1989 through March 1990 to determine face area methane liberation patterns on two extended longwall sections. The coal seam being mined was considered gassy and the mine liberated an average of 14.4 million cubic feet per day (cfd) or 0.41 million cubic meters per day (cmd) of methane through the mine fans. The mine also used an extensive underground degasification program to recover up to 13.4 million cfd (0.38 million cmd) of methane. Data was collected while the longwall sections were mining from the beginning, middle and end of panel extraction to determine the relationship between the methane liberation and extent of longwall retreat. As expected, methane concentrations did increase from the headgate (intake) to the tailgate (return) side of the longwall face and peak concentrations were detected above the shearer as it passed a methanometer location during mining. There were significant differences in the methane liberations due to the location of the active face within the longwall panel. Results from this study could be used to determine a minimum design face air quantity for an extended longwall section operating under similar conditions.

Gold mineralization at the Mercur Mine was controlled primarily by structure and secondarily by lithology in Mississippian-age sedimentary rocks. Gold was localized where Sevier-age high angle northeast-striking faults are intersected by younger northwest-striking fault zones. The Lulu Graben is a northeast- striking fault zone composed of a south-dipping master fault coupled with subsidiary or antithetic faults. The Twist Fault zone, a sinuous, low-displacement , north-striking zone of fracturing, bisects the graben. Large- tonnage disseminated ore bodies formed east of the Twist Fault zone within silty, thin-bedded, bioclastic carbonates. West of the Twist Fault zone, gold was restricted to rock near peripheral faults surrounding a subvertical collapsed pipe developed within the graben. An overlying thick carbonaceous shale capped the ore zone. Presence of abundant limited- displacement faulting and of hydrothermal jasperoid is associated with cartonate-hosted disseminated gold. Conversely, increased fault displacement and widespread brecciation are associated with reduced dissemination of gold into normally receptive carbonates.

This project was developed at the PCS Phosphate Mine in Aurora, NC. This site includes a surface mining operation, beneficiation plant and chemical processing facility located in the coastal plain of eastern North Carolina. The phosphate ore being mined at this operation is a 10 to 12 meter (35 to 40 foot) thick colloidal deposit located approximately 30 meters (100 feet) below the ground surface. The ore is pumped to the beneficiation facility where it is separated into clay, sand and concentrate streams. The concentrate product is utilized at the chemical plants to produce a wide range of products including fertilizer, industrial phosphates and animal feed products. The Cyclone Dike Builder (CDB) project developed a technique for dewatering the beneficiation tailing sand stream and providing innovative placement for dike construction. Future material balance requirements at the PCS Phosphate mine required an improvement in tailing sand placement technique to accomplish strategic objectives. The water volume of the sand slurry forces significant quantities of sand out of the dike profile during deposition. PCS Phosphate and MetPro Supply of Florida developed a mobile high-density hydro-cyclone station to remove most of the water and significantly increase the density of the sand being placed for dike construction. This high-density sand slurry is then effectively controlled using minimal heavy equipment operation.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. Nino study demonstrated (Hale and Govett, 19677 Govett and Hale, 1967) the feasibility of geochemical prospecting relative to other exploration methods for the location and delineation of disseminated copper occurrences, the major source of metal in the expanding mineral industry of the Philippines. In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. INTRODUCTION Placer Dome's Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture operation is located some 75 km northeast of Winnemucca, a community in north central Nevada. Formerly known as the Getchell Gold Corporation and First Miss Gold, the operation mines refractory ore from the Getchell and Turquoise Ridge gold deposits located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range above the Kelly Creek Basin in the Potosi Mining District. Mining has been ongoing at Getchell since shortly after its discovery in 1934, and was the nation's second leading producer of gold after Homestake in the early 1940s. Over its history the Getchell property has been mined for gold, tungsten, molybdenum and arsenic; mining methods varied from open pit mining to underground mining; processing options included conventional milling, flotation, roasting, heap leaching, and most recently pressure oxidation followed by CIL (carbon-in-leach). As an historical note, the US Bureau of Mines developed the use of carbon for gold recovery at Getchell during the 1940s (Horton 1999). Placer Dome acquired the property in May 1999. The pressure oxidation plant was mothballed in July 1999 and the property was placed on care and maintenance in February 2002 pending further exploration results. The property is currently ramping up to full production status. A joint venture agreement (75% Placer Dome, 25% Newmont) was established with Newmont Mining in 2003 and ore is processed at their nearby Twin Creeks autoclave plant. Mine dewatering is a key element to success. Arsenic is a ubiquitous mineral in many of the mineralized areas of northern Nevada, necessitating treatment of water prior to re-infiltration.

The coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been considered as the most serious health problem in the coal mining industry. The development of CWP in a worker lung depends on the average concentration and toxic components of the coal dust and the exposure length. Toxicity studies on coal dust shows the bio-available iron (BAI) in the coal dust plays an adverse role in the CWP development. It is also found that presence of calcite in the coal seams can significantly reduce the CWP cases as evidenced by the significant difference between the coal miners in the western and Appalachian coal regions. Based on this finding, it is proposed to artificially introduce calcite to BAI -containing coals in the effort to mitigate the CWP disease in coal industry. This paper introduces the scientific bases, the main geological factor that makes the differences, the proposed methods to introduce calcite to coal dust or to coal seams. Feasibility for the proposed methods is also discussed.
