In order to ensure safe mining and reduce surface damage in shallow multiple-seam mining, the failure characteristics of interburden strata with different coal pillar offset distances between pillars in the upper and lower seams, the distribution characteristics of stress concentration in coal pillars, and the development characteristics of stratum cracks and subsidence were physically investigated and also using UDEC2D software. Meanwhile, the effect of different coal pillar offset distances on the stress concentration of coal pillars and development of stratum cracks were studied. Based on those results, a formula for safe mining and reducing surface damage was established, which provided a theoretical basis for safe and environmentally friendly mining in shallow multi-seams. According to the results of the study, the optimal coal pillar offset distance (the side-to-side horizontal distance of the upper and lower coal pillars) between the upper and lower coal seams was developed to reduce the stress concentration of coal pillars and surface damage. The results of this study have been applied in Ningtiaota coal mine and have achieved good results in safe and environmentally friendly mining.

The phenomenon of surfactant adsorption at mineral surfaces is of significant importance in many particulate processes ranging from mineral flotation and enhanced oil recovery to pharmaceutics, paint technology and the casting of high quality ceramics. Stability of the dispersions is related not only to the amount of adsorbed surfactant but also to the structure of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface. This structure greatly depends on the type of surfactant and the hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity of the surface. On hydrophobic surfaces surfactants adsorb regardless of surface charge by van der Waals/hydrophobic inter-actions with hydrocarbon chains accommodated at the surface. On the other hand, on hydrophilic surfaces the surfactants adsorb through electrostatic interactions with their polar moiety fixed at the surface. In the latter case, the electric charge of the surface and surfactant plays a crucial role in the surfactant adsorption process. The recently developed soft-contact Atomic Force Microscopy technique has revealed images of adsorbed surfactant structures at various interfaces. The adsorbed structures of a cationic surfactant (CTAB) and an anionic surfactant (SDS) are presented in this work for different concentrations at hydrophobic graphite and hydrophilic mica surfaces. Different types of micellar arrangements have been observed at these surfaces for surfactant concentrations around the critical micelle concentration. The structures are more ordered and well defined at the graphite surface than at the mica surface. These results have been correlated with the hydrophobicity of the surfaces as revealed by contact angle measurements.

INTRODUCTION Two promising innovative tunnel support systems are being developed by the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois. One of these is a lining which can be placed by a slipform located immediately behind and contiguous with a tunneling machine. Recent advancements in construction materials appear to provide the breakthrough required to make such a system feasible and practical. The lining material which permits this construction scheme is wire fiber reinforced concrete made with high, very early strength regulated-set cement. Parts I and II of this paper relate to this slipformed liner. Part I discusses the material and equipment required to install the liner. The "Extruded Liner System" (ELS) has been devised to place the lining. This ELS concept is briefly described and a tentative development program is outlined. In Part II, the physical properties and practical construction aspects of the liner material are discussed and a program for structural testing of 10-ft diameter prototype tunnel supports is presented. Part III contains descriptions of improvements to conventional steel-rib tunnel supports. It is shown that square tubular box sections are structurally superior to wide flange sections for complex loading conditions often encountered in rock tunnels. Analytical studies and tests on connections have been performed to evaluate their structural behavior. These are presented along with a program for comparative large-scale tests on horseshoe-shaped frames with a 10-foot span. This research is being conducted by the Department of Civil

Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta, GA, is continually growing and, like many other metropolitan areas, it needs to increase the capacity of its waste water system to meet future demand. The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) is the responsible agency for water distribution, waste water collection and treatment in most areas of the county. CCWS, one of the most progressive agencies in the metro-Atlanta area, is addressing its future waste water capacity needs in the southern part of the county with the construction of the South Cobb Tunnel and Pump Station. This project consists of an 8.8-km- (5.5-mile-) long, 8.2-m- (27-ft-) diameter, tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavated waste water storage and conveyance tunnel; six tangential vortex-flow intakes ranging from 1,533 to 5,700 L/s (35 to 130 mgd) peak flow capacity, two construction shafts, six 1.8-m (6-ft) finished diameter connecting tunnels ranging in length from 6 to 975 m (20 to 3,200 ft) and a 5,700-L/s (130-mgd) wet/dry pit pump station. The pump station will have a semi-circular wet well with a dividing wall that extends almost to the top of the shaft and a spilt dry well for reliable operation. Roller gates will control the flow to the wet well from the tunnel. The pump station will have six 1,420 L/s (32.5 mgd) pumps and two sets of stair wells and elevators. With a finished diameter of 32 m (104 ft) and a depth of 62 m (204 ft), this is the largest pump station shaft constructed so far in Georgia for the dewatering of a waste water tunnel. The pump station shaft was also the highlight of the well attended and successful 2009 Shaft Design and Construction Short Course held in Atlanta, Sept. 10-11. The two-day course was sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Pennsylvania State University and concluded with a field trip to the pump station shaft. The tunnel starts south of the city of Austell and finishes at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located on the banks of the [ ] Chattahoochee River just north of Interstate 20 (Fig. 1). The South Cobb Tunnel will run 30 to 137 m (100 to 450 ft) below the surface, with an average depth of about 91 m (300 ft), through metamorphic rocks (Fig 2). The construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor JV with the lowest bid price of $305 million and notice-to-proceed was given on July 14, 2008. Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc. (JJG) is the project designer and performed the geotechnical investigations. Parsons/Jacobs Associates is the construction manager. The South Cobb Tunnel is CCWS?s second deep hard rock tunnel. The 15.3-km- (9.5-mile-) long, 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diameter TBM excavated the Chattahoochee Tunnel was the first deep tunnel to be construced in Cobb County. Construction began in 2000 and the project was completed four years later. It is located about 16 km (10 miles) northeast of the South Cobb Tunnel in similar geology. It was designed by JJG to meet east Cobb?s long-term waste water capacity needs and provide flow equalization to the R.L. Sutton WRF. The Chattahoochee Tunnel was named ?Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year? by the Georgia Sec-tion of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2006.

Crushing and grinding account for the major portion (60 to 80 percent) of the overall expenses for ore processing. Autogenous (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) have been considered a step forward in comparison to conventional grinding circuits with several stages of crushing and using ball (and/or rod) grinding mills (Bassarear, 1982, MacPherson, 1989, Pithois, Casalis, 1983, Maripuu et al., 1983). However, there remains room for improvement to existing AG and SAG technologies and both technologies have immense economic benefit potential. Experience gained by the Technics & Technologies of Disintegration Ltd. (TTD) in the research of grinding processes shows that grinding in AG and SAG mills can be performed in a more effective way. The company's approach comprises the following elements: ? Novel mill design. ? New liners and lifters. ? Novel discharge grid design. ? Technique of treating material of critical particle size. Comparative tests that demonstrated the usefulness of these innovations are described in this article. Currently, there are hundreds of AG and SAG mills in operation throughout the world. Application of new internal elements of the mills and reconsideration of the circuit design of the existing grinding equipment using present technological solutions would significantly increase the throughput rate and diminish power requirement.

Evidence of hydrothermal activity on two Mid-Atlantic Ridge oceanic core complexes (OCCs), at 13º30’N (the Semyenov 1 through 5 fields) and 13º20’N (the Irinovskoe field) (Fig. 1) were studied using CTD casts, dredges, TV-grabs and SP surveys during previous research cruises to these sites (Cherkashev et al., 2013, McLeod et al., 2009). In late 2013, the Semyenov and Irinovskoe fields were revisited, this time with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) during the ODEMAR (Oceanic Detachments at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) cruise on the French research vessel "Pourqoui Pas ?". Here we present the first visual surveys and direct sampling of these vent sites. High-resolution (~2 m) bathymetry of the 13º30’N and 13º20’N OCCs and their associated vent fields was collected during 4 and 5 AUV dives, respectively, using the GEOMAR AUV "ABYSS" (Fig. 1). These surveys were flown between 70 m and 100 m above the seafloor, typically at a constant height to reduce vehicle movement. The AUV was equipped with Eh, turbidity, and temperature sensors in order to detect active hydrothermal venting. Over twenty ROV dives with the ROV "VICTOR 6000" allowed for the visual exploration of the OCCs and collection of 59 hydrothermal rock samples from the vent fields. As a result of these exploration activities, the first robust estimates of the size of the deposits, and the geologic controls on sulfide accumulation at these sites can be determined.

When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

Perlite is a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. It is a form of natural volcanic glass the main constituent of which is amorphous silica (70-76%). Perlite, when heated rapidly to its softening temperature range, expands from four to twenty times its original volume, due to the presence of 2-6% ?combined? water, in a manner similar to popcorn as the H2O molecules vaporize and create countless tiny bubbles, which account for its exceptional physical properties: light weight (30-150 kg/m3), low thermal conductivity, cellular structure, in general. These properties make perlite adaptable for numerous end-uses, which can be distinguished into 2 categories: Expanded perlite applications in: a) Construction Materials market (e.g. Acoustical Tiles, light-weight insulating Mortars, self-levelling Concrete), b) Agriculture (e.g. Hydroponics), c) Food and Chemical industry (e.g. Filtration Media, Filler, etc.), d) Insulation and Heat resistance technology (e.g. Cryogenic vessels, Refractory Bricks, etc.). The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) is the most significant railway infrastructure development project in the United Kingdom since the construction of the Channel Tunnel between France and England. The key element of this project is the 2-mile-long(3.2-km) North Downs Tunnel, which will be the largest and deepest twin-track railway tunnel ever constructed in the United Kingdom. This paper describes the contractual agreement, the design and construction (excavation and lining) of a twin-track rail tunnel with a 166-m 2 face excavated through chalk using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The importance of collaborating with a tunnel contractor/designer who not only is expert in the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, but who was also responsible for the design and installation of the primary lining, will be highlighted in this paper. This paper will also deal with the benefits of partnering in tunnel design and construction, as well as the resultant added values of mechanizing conventional tunnelling methods (Value Engineering).

In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

Due to the constant need to improve SAG mill performance and efficiency, extensive research into all aspects of SAG mill optimization has been performed. This paper will review the current evolution of SAG mill shell liner design and their performance at the Copperton Concentrator. The effect of these liner design changes will be discussed with respect to: • Liner configurations • Mill operating performance, i.e., throughput, power draw, mill control • Mill mechanical performance, i.e., liner wear profiles, liner life, liner breakage, liner hardness • Foundry manufacturing considerations • Economic evaluation of throughput versus liner life This paper will discuss the results of Kennecott Utah Copper’s (KUC) and ME International’s (MEI) test work, providing an insight into the past, present and potential future opportunities of SAG mill liner design.

Drilling into coal mine roof strata to install roof bolts has the potential to release substantial quantities of respirable dust. Due to the proximity of drill holes to the breathing zone of roof bolting personnel, dusts escaping the holes and avoiding capture by the dust collection system pose a potential respiratory health risk. Controls are available to complement the typical dry vacuum collection system and minimize harmful exposures during the initial phase of drilling. This paper examines the use of a bit sleeve in combination with a dust hog-type bit to improve dust extraction during the critical initial phase of drilling. A twisted-body drill bit is also evaluated to determine the quantity of dust liberated by comparison to the dust hog-type bit. Based on these laboratory tests, the bit sleeve may reduce dust emissions by one-half during the initial phase of drilling before the drill bit is fully enclosed by the drill hole. Because collaring is responsible for the largest dust liberations, overall dust emissions can also be substantially reduced. The use of a twisted-body bit has minimal improvement on dust capture compared to the commonly used dust hog-type bit.

Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher. Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.

INTRODUCTION The transportation of men, supplies, and mined material from an underground operation is the connecting link between the mine plant and the surface plant. Unless the mine is accessed by a drift or adit, some form of hoisting system is necessary for slopes or shafts. This chapter will deal with the selection of wire ropes and hoists, two of the most important consider¬ations when designing a hoisting system for an under¬ground mine. WIRE ROPES General A wire rope is designed to transmit forces longitudi¬nally along its axis. Wire rope is used in a variety of mining applications because of its flexibility, high ten¬sile strength, and dependability. Shaft hoisting ropes and principal slope haulage ropes are usually custom-¬built; however, proper rope selection for slushers, car spotters, etc. should not be overlooked. Wire ropes for shafts and slopes, since they represent the life line for the mines, should be of the very highest quality improved plow steel. This quality is necessary to deal with the conditions of loading, winding, vibration, abrasion, and corrosion. Tables I and 2 display the specifications for the typical wire ropes used for mine haulage applications. The 6 x 19-class haulage rope is used for most hoisting where abrasion is not critical. On the other hand, where abrasion is critical, such as a slope application, 6 X 7-class haulage ropes are preferred. For other mining applications, manufactur¬ers' handbooks should be consulted. Selection The selection of a wire rope for a mining situation consists of simply applying appropriate safety factors to a calculated maximum rope pull and comparing the result to the listed breaking strength of the rope under consideration. Table 3 can be used for determin¬ing the minimum factors of safety for wire ropes. To determine the maximum rope pull, the following quantities must be known: the rope weight in pounds (x), the conveyance weight in pounds (y), and the weight in pounds of the load in the conveyance (z). These values are used to calculate the load due to gravity, the load due to conveyance friction, and the load due to rope friction. When these loads are added together, as shown in Eq. 1, the maximum (static) rope pull (RPS) can be derived:

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. World kaolin production World production statistics (Coope, 1979; Table 1) demonstrate that kaolin is produced in many areas of the world. The Uetliberg Tunnel in Switzerland is the longest tunnel in Zurich?s new Western Bypass Expressway, connecting the Birmensdorf bypass in the west with the existing Zurich-Chur national motorway in the east. Thus the tunnel links the Zurich-West motorway interchange with the Zurich-South interchange (shown in Figure 1). The Uetliberg Tunnel project comprises two parallel tubes, each about 4.4 km long. The two tunnel tubes are connected every 300 m by a transverse walkway and every 900 m by a transverse roadway (Figure 2). The SOS niches are spaced 150 m apart. Portal stations with machinery rooms are located at the west and east portals. The tunnel falls with a gradient of 1.6% from the west portal at Wannenboden to the east portal at Gänziloo. The Project costs are about CHF 1.12 billion. The carcass construction started in March 2001. The Opening of the Uetliberg Tunnel is planed in spring 2009.

Many techniques that are used to characterize and monitor microbial populations associated with sulfide mineral bioleaching require the cultivation of the organisms on solid or liquid media. Chemolithotrophic species, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, or thermophilic chemolithotrophs, such as Acidianus brierleyi and Sulfolobus solfataricus can grow quite slowly, requiring weeks to complete efforts to identify and quantify these microbes associated with bioleach samples. Real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays in which DNA targets are amplified in the presence of fluorescent oligonucleotide primers, allowing the monitoring and quantification of the amplification reactions as they progress, provide a means of rapidly detecting the presence of microbial species of interest, and their relative abundance in a sample. This presentation will describe the design and use of such assays to monitor acidophilic microbes in the environment and in bioleaching operations. These assays provide results within 2-3 hours, and can detect less than 100 individual microbial cells.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) is currently conducting a coal resource assessment of the coalbeds and zones that are projected to provide the bulk of the nation’s resources for the next few decades. The Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coals are the first two beds in the northern and central Appalachian basin region to undergo fully digital coal assessments. The bed-specific assessments are being carried out in partnership with the state geologic surveys of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Comprehensive stratigraphic and geochemical databases have been developed for both of the beds. The extent of the bed with mined areas, structure contour, isopach, and overburden thickness maps for the Pittsburgh coal bed have been released as USGS open-file reports.
