INTRODUCTION Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and sili- cosis are only two of several diseases which are rlassed as pneumoconiosis. These are respiratory diseases caused by dusts which are inhaled and accumulated in the lungs. The individual particles of dust cannot be seen by the human eye. They are so small that they escape the natural cleansing mechanism of the nose and air passages and make their way down to the terminal air sacs of the lung where they injure the cells and cause the formation of scar tissue. Consequently, if there is exposure to high concentrations of dust over a period of time - usually, a number of years - the amount of scar tissue increases and begins to impair breathing. As a result, the miner develops shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing ad-if exposure continues - this progresses to permanent disability and frequently to death. Death is often due to pulmonary heart disease, the effect of stress on the heart 2s it tries to compensate for the weakened lungs. Specifically, silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by the accumulation of free silica (quartz) in the lungs. Silicosis is considered the most important form of pneumoconiosis, not only because of its seriousness as a respiratory crippler, but also because of the large number of workers who risk contracting it in a variety of occupations. Quartz is one of the most common substances of the earth's crust, estimated at about 60 percent. Silicosis has been found in coal, metal and granite miners, as well as in other workers, such as sandblasters and pottery makers. Silicosis is also known to predispose the lung to tuberculosis and to increase the chances that a worker will contract chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The seriousness of silicosis was tragically brought to public attention about 50 years ago. During 1932-34, workers were involved in digging a tunnel through rock at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. While their exposure time was relatively short, they developed silicosis because of the high concentrations of quartz. By 1936, 476 workers had died of silicosis and about 1500 were believed to have the disease (Washington Post, 1982). It is difficult to tell how many coal miners have silicosis. Introduction The federal government's declining role in funding research has created a critical dollar gap for university departments of mining engineering. Industry, too, is affected by the drought. Research is lagging. Hardpressed universities are going to the private sector for funding. Mining companies should not shower universities with philanthropy, but a research partnership should be contracted on a pay-as-you-go basis. A model exists at The University of Alabama (albeit not in mining) that could be adopted by the mining industry. An equal partnership arrangement between a university and an industry for conducting research is proposed. The concept is not that a corporation sponsors and a university performs the research. Nor does it call for educational contributions or giveaways from industry. Rather, the corporation and the educational institution enter into a cooperative research endeavor, a full and equal partnership. Both parties contribute and both share the benefits. A key to the relationship is that it has a single objective: it must generate profits or reduce costs for the company. Working Model Recent literature is replete with examples of proposals for joint research endeavors, involving both contracts and grants, between industry and universities (Bronwell, 1971; Bugliarello, 1978; Branscomb, 1981; Sanford and Holland, 1982). They are all good proposals and offer something to both parties. They are, however, not widely supported. Few have received a favorable nod from the US mining industry. Though it may be logical, for example, to remake the American Mining Congress (or some new consortium) in the mold of umbrella-type industry organizations to fund cooperative research with mining institutions, such proposals have never flown. What model, then, will work? First, look for a model that has worked in industry in general. Second, seek to apply it to mining specifically. There is a model project that satisfies the first of those criteria. It is a project complicated by a third party, in addition to a corporation and a university. In January 1983, the "Factory of the Future Project" was initiated between The University of Alabama (UA) and General Motors Corp. (GM). The United Auto Workers (UAW) is a third party to the agreement. The factory was GM's Rochester Products Division manufacturing plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, also home of UA's main campus (Fig. 1). Saving a Plant The agreement came about at the initiative of GM and the UAW. Faced with having to close the plant because of excessive production costs, company and union officials proposed to the university that an applied research facility be established at the plant. The university would operate the laboratory, dedicated to $470,000 a year cost reductions for the company. The school would lease the 5.1 km2 (55,000 sq ft) space for $470,000 a year for three years. Any savings effected by the university's research effort would be credited toward to the rent. GM said the small factory, which made replacement carburetors

Traditional pit optimization techniques cannot take account of the requirement to blend ore in order to produce a saleable product, as is the case for iron ore, coal, limestone and other industrial minerals. Various techniques are proposed to overcome the deficiencies, many of which have been tested. The techniques in general involve the combined application of pit optimization and blend optimization techniques.

Weak demand for metals and consequent low metal prices resulted in continuation of the depressed state of US mineral exploration activity through 1983. Data collected by Resources for the Future Inc. and The Pennsylvania State University for a cooperative study on mineral exploration activity indicate that US exploration in 1983 fell by as much as 25% from 1982 levels. Precious metals remained the focus of most exploration efforts, as gold and silver prices remained attractive compared to base metals. Reports of 1983 domestic exploration and development activities in several industry journals indicates that about 85% to 90% of those projects were directed primarily at gold and silver. Gold exploration included work by several companies on Carlin- type disseminated gold deposits in Nevada, geological prospecting and drilling in the Wenatchee Gold Belt in Washington, and interest in lode and placer gold properties in California, especially by several small Canadian firms. Precious metals exploration projects were also reported in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah. There was also tome precious metal exploration activity in the eastern US. Development continued at the Ropes gold mine near Ishpeming, MI, and companies explored historic gold-producing areas in the Southeast. Some exploration for nonprecious metals took place last year. Stratabound copper-silver deposits were examined in western Montana, and US Borax continued exploring molybdenum resources in the Misty Fjords area in Alaska. Work on these projects during 1983 may have been stimulated by time limits on the availability of certain federal lands for exploration more than by projected improvements in metal markets. During 1983, several papers were published on mineral exploration strategies and the future of US exploration. David Watson of Raymond Kaiser Engineers, in a paper presented at the 1983 AMC Mining Convention, forecast increased exploration activity for gold and silver because of world economic conditions. He added that antimony, manganese, chromium, graphite, mercury, tantalum, tin, and barite are also likely targets based on their limited domestic reserve availability. He cited concern over reported subsidized mineral production by foreign producers and US regulatory and land-planning policies as retarding mineral exploration activity. Douglas Cook of Freeport Exploration Co., at the same meeting, presented a paper that showed that a 1950-75 period of vigorous exploration has been followed by a period where acquisition has replaced exploration as the predominant means of acquiring new mineral properties. At a December IIASA conference on "The Economics of Mineral Exploration," in Vienna, Austria, A. Rose and R. Eggert of The Pennsylvania State University pointed out that recent exploration decisions tend to rely more on evaluating production costs and comparing them with existing deposits, rather than on return of

The chemistry and structure-activity relationships for four new classes of sulfide mineral and precious metals collectors developed recently are discussed in this paper. These collector classes are alkoxycarbonyl alkyl thionocarbamates and thioureas, dialkyl (or diaryl) monothiophosphates and dialkyl monothiophosphinates. The main emphasis will be to highlight the differences between collectors and their affinities for various minerals on the basis of data on kinetics of adsorption on pure minerals, natural ore flotation and microscopy of flotation concentrates. The mechanism of interaction of these collectors with sulfide minerals is also discussed with the available data on the FTIR and solution chemistry studies.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. Gold chlorination which will be presented in this paper is limited entirely to the use of gaseous chlorine in a fluidized bed reactor at elevated temperatures in the absence of aqueous water. The only water used in this process is that which is used in scrubbing the effluents. Low temperatures are defined as those below 500°C. All experimentation for this paper was carried out on a laboratory scale, with all calculations extrapolated frpm this. Some of the data is drawn from work with other projects which have been operated at pilot and larger scale.

Introduction Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydrologic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with groundwater following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. The prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with groundwater is a critical aspect of assessing the long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical groundwater flow modeling provides a method for predicting the groundwater refilling rate of the pit. The rate at which pit "lakes" fill depends on several factors: •the rate and duration of pit dewatering; •the depth and size of the ultimate pit and •the pre-mining hydrologic regime. These factors can be incorporated into a detailed numerical groundwater flow model that can then be used to assess the effects of dewatering and post-mining recovery on the local and regional hydrologic systems. A sufficiently detailed, numerical groundwater model provides the oportunity to: •account for complex geology near the pit; •assess the impact of active pit dewatering and •predict the long-term impacts of post-mining groundwater flow into the pit. A detailed groundwater model incorporating these items has been developed and applied at an operating open-pit mine. Developed by Durbin and O'Brien (1987), the three-dimensional, finite-element, groundwater flow model was used to represent the hydrologic system of an approximately 253-km2 (98-sq mile) area surrounding the pit. Historical groundwater elevation data, stream flows and meteorologic, geologic and geophysical data were used to establish the dimensions and initial conditions for the model. Steady-state conditions, representing the pre-mining local and regional hydrologic systems, were simulated using the initial conditions incorporated into the groundwater model. The groundwater model was then utilized to simulate various dewatering programs, to predict the filling rate and the groundwater depth in the ultimate pit once mining activities are complete and to assess the long-term impacts on the regional groundwater flow system. Development of pit lake model Groundwater modeling efforts were completed in two phases. The first focused on pit dewatering activities, while the second phase concentrated on the post-mining effects on the hydrologic system. The final estimates of groundwater elevations calculated during the pit dewatering simulations were used in predicting the post-mining recovery of the hydrologic system. The groundwater model was also modified prior to the second phase to account for the volume of rock removed during mining activities. To account for the actual volume of rock mined, the geometry of the post-dewatering model grid was modified to approximate the final pit geometry. The depth and width of the ultimate pit were divided into eight idealized stages that represented significant changes in the bench geometries. These eight stages were then introduced sequentially into the model according to the predicted water elevations within the pit. In this way, changes in the volume and depth of water within the pit were accounted for through time. Once the ultimate pit geometry was accounted for in the model, it was necessary to assign new hydraulic characteristics to those parts of the model grid (elements) that represented excavated rock. The solution of the numerical model requires that finite hydraulic conductivity values be assigned to the portion of the groundwater model that represents excavated rock. Therefore, the calculated groundwater elevations differ, somewhat, between the edges and the center of the open pit. These model-calculated water elevations at the edge and in the middle of the open pit represent the elevation of water that would occur in the pit lake. To minimize the error in the estimated level of water within the pit lake, the hydraulic conductivity was increased to a value that would: •minimize the predicted difference between the groundwater elevations across the open pit and •produce a numerically stable solution. Specific storage is the hydrologic parameter that accounts for the water produced by compaction of the aquifer matrix. To predict the groundwater volume that would flow into the ultimate pit, this parameter was assigned a value equivalent to the compressibility of water. This value of specific storage reflects the post-mining groundwater storage occurring as an open body of water. Additionally, a specific yield of 1.0 was assigned to the pit elements to represent the 100% porosity of the open pit. In

Induction times for a variety of minerals have been measured at a particle bed. Electrostatic repulsive forces between bubble and particle generally are of secondary importance in determining the hydrophobic state; nevertheless, the shortest induction times are measured at the isoelectric point of the solid. More importantly, the study shows that the film-rupture mechanism at a polished surface might be different from that at a particle bed. The induction time measured at a particle bed, besides being dependent on the surface chemistry of the system, shows a definite relationship to particle size and density. Theoretical analysis suggests that such a measured induction time at a particle bed should properly be defined as an attachment time which consists of the induction time and the film-displacement time. Thus one portion of the measured attachment time is the induction time, the time required to thin the water film between the particle surface and the gas bubble to a critical thickness so that rupture of the film takes place ('1)' The other portion of the measured attachment time is the time required for the film to be displaced to such an extent that the attachment is stabilized with respect to the upward motion of the bubble and the downward gravitational force acting on the particle ('2)' Further, the present study illustrates that '2 is related to the hydrophobic character of the surface, the rate of film displacement after rupture, the upward velocity of the captive bubble, and, most importantly, the particle size and density.

Ground-based electrical geophysical techniques have be valuable for three indirect exploration strategies: "tracer" sulfide mineralization, 2) mapping structure with or controlling mineralization, and 3) mapping proven to 1) mapping? associated alteration zones. When sulfide mineralization is associated with gold, it often can be mapped using induced polarization (IP). This technique can detect pyrite in amounts as small as 0.2% by volume, and in some cases can distinguish pyrite from anomalies due to graphite and clays. A case history illustrates mapping sulfides in a shear zone. Structure and alteration mapping are often the domain of controlled source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) due to the superior lateral resolution and depth penetration of this technique. Typical CSAMT targets include silicified sediments and volcanics, faults, brecciated zones, argillic alteration, clay and graphite horizons, and certain lithologies. Examples of mapping silicification and mapping epithermal alteration are presented in CSAMT case histories over Cannon mine in Washington and Hishikari mine in southern Japan. In our experience, four things are needed to use geophysics effectively in precious metals exploration. First, the explorationist must correctly identify the exploration stage at which the geophysics is most useful. Second, the explorationist must clearly define the types of "tracer" mineralization, host geology, or alteration which need to be defined by the geophysics. Third, the right electrical technique needs to be applied to the problem to provide the best chance of success. Fourth, the explorationist must be willing to commit adequate finances to do the geophysics properly. With careful adherence to these principles, geophysics can greatly enhance exploration success while reducing the total cost of exploration.

We have studied the possibility to use electrical phenomena in order to selectively separate minerals with various densities and dielectric constants in non-homogeneous electric fields. This technique is based on levitation forces acting on a solid particle immersed in dielectric fluid. When the gradient of the electric field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the dielectric fluid (pure liquid or electric colloids) will be in an upward direction to float sinking minerals by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the liquid medium. The separation process can be made by using two possible modes: either by direct application of electrical forces or by change in the density and dielectric constant of a liquid medium in which the mineral particles are placed. We have investigated several electrode configurations in order to produce electrical fields which are strongly non homogeneous. Further more, investigation on the dielectric properties of liquids have been performed.

The principals of McCabe Industrial Minerals, Inc., have been involved in the mining, processing, and marketing of nonmetallic minerals for more than 40 years. In addition to marketing nonmetallic minerals produced by other companies, McCabe Minerals owns and operates three plants that produce headlap-roofing granules, with 25 employees and annual sales approaching $6 million. During its 22 years of operation, the company has developed many different markets, and a list of factors that is used in making our marketing and feasibility studies. These criteria (Table 1) are used extensively by the company in all of its projects, and we present this and other data about the company in this brief report. "INTRODUCTION Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, explosive. Others can be early reporters of potential problems. It has previously been shown that analysis by gas chromatograph can the most accurate conventional analytical tool for common mine gas mixtures when used correctly. There are some other detection methods (e.g hand held sensors), but they do not detect many situations which are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). Examples include explosive hydrogen mixtures, toxic carbon dioxide levels, and some explosive mixtures of methane with oxygen. (Reference our previous paper). There are several reasons for mines to consider onsite GC analysis. (1) Timeliness of results. Samples can be taken and analyzed immediately. Samples do not have to be shipped to a lab and wait for results. (2) Ability to run greater number of samples a lower for the same cost. This allows mine to increase the number of samples taken to be more informed about the gases/conditions of the mine without the worry of financial constraints. (3) Fewer sample media needed, and there is no wear and tear or cost from shipping them offsite. When samples are shipped offsite, those sample media cannot be used to take until the lab returns them when the analysis is done onsite, the sample media can be used again almost immediately. However there are several challenges associated with using GC to analyze mine gas samples onsite. To date there has been a clash of the requirements for a successful analysis, the capabilities of the technology, and the practicalities of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the difficulties in getting accurate reliable data and doing so in an economic way. This whole measurement activity is a cost center for a mine, so there are economic concerns for the mine to address. These concerns are mainly staffing costs, capital costs, maintenance, and consumables costs. A properly staffed and equipped analysis lab, including burdened overhead, costs about $500K per year. At a sampling rate of 10 per day, this is about $140 per measurement for a proper onsite lab."

Industrial mineral by-products occur as a result of mining and processing a primary mineral product. By-products result from concentration and separation of accessory minerals during processing or from the primary mineral during processing, for example dusts. Many companies have found it rewarding to evaluate mineral by-products from their operations and determine potential products and applications. By-products need to be evaluated for physical and chemical properties to determine possible applications and markets. Market studies are needed to determine application specifications, price structure of the market, competitive products, and to determine marketing regions. The by-products need to be evaluated for beneficiation and processing to meet these market requirements.

"Most engineers are bright, hard-working, reliable, and prefer to avoid conflict. An engineering curriculum tends to self-select these characteristics. By most standards, you would expect workers exhibiting these traits to require minimal supervision. But is this true? Is this how most current engineering managers lead? Looking at some current theories on leadership combined with personal anecdotes, this presentation will look at some common misconceptions about leading engineers. INTRODUCTION Engineers are different. There, I said it. From cartoons to movies to television shows and more, there is a reason stereotypes of engineers resonate. Yes, you can find a lot individual variation among specific engineers that you may know, but they do not detract from some of the overarching commonalities that engineers are known for. CLASH OF CULTURES What distinguishes a professional? Raelin (1985), in his book Clash of Cultures, describes professionals as having superior intellectual training, maintaining their own standards of excellence, and being supported by associations that maintain the quality of the profession. Engineers obviously fit all three of these ideas: an engineering degree is still regarded as one of the most difficult to attain; we maintain our own standards both through peer-review and in academia through ABET accreditation; and through professional associations like SME to promote the discipline and foster technical growth. Six characteristics representing professional status are described by Raelin (1985, p. 9): Expertise—prolonged specialized training in a body of abstract knowledge. Autonomy—the freedom to choose the means to solving a problem. Commitment—Primary interest is in pursuing the practice of one’s own chosen specialty. Identification—identifying with the profession and with fellow professionals, both through formal associations and through peers external to the organization. Ethics—providing service without concern for oneself or without becoming emotionally involved with the client. Standards—committed to help in policing the conduct of fellow professionals. Engineers are smart—in the vast majority of cases they are hired specifically for their expertise. At a typical mine the ventilation engineer knows more about mine ventilation than anyone else on site; the same is true for the rock mechanics engineer, the explosives engineer, the planning engineer who uses sophisticated computer software—each is the expert for their particular area at the mine, that is why they have that responsibility. This can present a dilemma for the manager for each (sometimes all) of these engineers. The manager needs to keep everyone on task and focused on the objectives of the organization. Because they have reached their position by following the norms and expectations of the organization, managers tend to have a certain amount of loyalty to that organization. Engineers, on the other hand, tend to have mixed loyalties, having as much loyalty and affinity for their profession as they do for the particular company they happen to be working for at any given time. This dynamic can often lead to power struggles between the managers, based on their positional authority in the organization, and the engineers, based on their specialized knowledge (Camm, 2013)."

NICOR Mineral Ventures, Inc. retained Neyer, Tiseo and Hindo, Ltd. to evaluate the potential effects of a planned dewatering operation at NICOR's proposed, 258-acre silica sand mining facility near South Rockwood, Michigan. The ?orebody? is a horizontally extensive, friable, quartz sandstone from the Sylvania Formation which also serves as an aquifer for some of the rural, residential development near the site. We conducted an aquifer test on the site which identified the important aquifer properties. Using these data and an analytical model, we determined that the radius of influence would be expected to range up to 6000 feet from the quarry during its final development stage. An inventory of water supply wells revealed that most wells had sufficient available drawdown and would not be adversely affected. A long-term groundwater monitoring program was recommended to monitor the possible effects at some of the closest wells.

Climate change presents risks to mine infrastructure, operations and long-term obligations to protect environmental conditions. Management strategies and design of infrastructure and containment systems based on past or current climate conditions may be inadequate in the future if changes in climate are not taken into account in planning for mine operations, decommissioning, closure and post-closure. Data-driven assessments using climate model projections of the future can be used to quantify: • Changes in site-specific risks to mine structures, access, containment facilities, operations and staff safety. • Changes in vegetation and water balance/chemistry, and potential for acid mine drainage, erosion and design failure. Climate- and weather-related risks are a serious threat to the mining industry, but risk transfer solutions can alleviate these vulnerabilities. Mining companies can protect themselves through bespoke solutions which provide operators, investors and buyers with protection against weather-related disruptions to operations by hedging to smooth revenues. Using risk transfer structures to mitigate climate risks is a mechanism that is available to all types of mining operations world-wide. In this paper, we describe methods for evaluating site-specific climate change impacts and developing risk transfer solutions to mitigate their effects. EVALUATING MINE RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE The best available tool for understanding potential future changes to the earth’s climate system are global climate models (GCMs) (IPCC, 2014). GCMs are computer simulations of the climate system which include the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere. Because of the computational demands of running a global model for many decades, the spatial resolutions of the GCM grids are necessarily coarse, typically on the order of 100-300 km. GCM data are therefore suitable for evaluating future physical risks on global or continental scales, but may not be appropriate for evaluating location-specific risks (e.g. Kotamarthi et al., 2016). For site-specific, quantitative physical risk assessment, GCM projection data are “downscaled” or adapted for use at the local level using statistical techniques together with observed data (statistical downscaling) or using high-resolution regional climate models (RCMs) that focus on a single geographic region and have spatial resolutions of 10-50 km (dynamical downscaling). Downscaling bridges the gap between the GCM scale and regional/local scale. Through the downscaling process, new information is added to the GCM output from observations and/or RCMs, resulting in patterns for weather variables that are more consistent with local terrain and weather influences. Downscaled climate change projections for the mine site are selected considering mine location and geography, the availability of local observations, and the performance of the downscaling method and global/regional models used to develop the projection in simulating the variable under study. Where possible, we use projections from an ensemble of global and regional model runs spanning a range of future greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios.

Pneumatic, triboelectrostatic processing of physical mixtures containing fine (-200 mesh) particulate may have significant application potential in the mining and energy industries. Such dry processing methods, especially for finely comminuted materials, have not been examined in as much detail as wet processing methods nor have been part of the training or education of mining and process engineers. We have examined fundamental and applied physical and engineering factors controlling triboelectrostatic beneficiation of fine-sized physical mixtures, one of which -combustion fly ash -has size, heterogeneity and mineral concentrations typical of those expected in mined minerals. The applicability of dry processing, however, cannot be readily evaluated because of the unavailability of standard procedures for process assessment.

"The Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group, part of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) has engaged a large number of industry professionals representing mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with interests and capabilities in the comminution field. These participants have collaborated to develop three guidelines for the assessment of the efficiency of mineral comminution circuits. Two of these guidelines deal specifically with power based modelling techniques to quantify energy efficiency using widely practiced techniques, those developed by Bond (1961), Rowland and McIvor (2009), and Morrell (2009). The third guideline deals with the sampling and surveying of grinding circuits as is required to provide the necessary information, at appropriate quality, to furnish the efficiency analysis promoted by the first two guidelines. This preprint will focus on the Guideline on Methods to Survey and Sample Grinding Circuits, which is currently in the final stages of peer review and finalization by the GMSG. INTRODUCTION It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the GMSG guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and as a result require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company, and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions. As a result of these factors full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices. To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. It can also be manipulated by experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, supporting an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

"The decline of the “super cycle” has placed an end to a decade of production-focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. Today, the sector is placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. However, most cost management systems in the minerals industry are not conceived as value driving tools but to meet financial accounting and reporting needs. This research draws from a the development of an innovative cost management methodology that applies Activity-Based Bottom-Up cost budgeting and continuous improvement tools to develop a value-driven cost management system for sustainable improvement of operational efficiency and cost reduction. The methodology was successfully tested in the Andina underground mine III Panel sector of Corporation del Cobre (CODELCO), in Chile. INTRODUCTION Cost management is fundamental to profitability of any industrial project. Even more essential in mining, an industry that deals with commodities, which prices are dictated by the market and are beyond the management capacity of the company. The end of the mining “super cycle” and the advent in 2008 of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), placed an end to a decade of production focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. The sector was placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. Many mining companies have seen themselves into the urgent need of cost management systems capable of achieving sustainable productivity gains and consistent profitability. Cost management is composed of three main processes: estimation, budgeting and control [1]. A number of conventional techniques have been used for cost estimation and budgeting for many years. However, most cost control systems in the minerals industry cannot be referred to as “cost management” since they are conceived to fulfil accounting and reporting needs, rather than to improve operational efficiency [2]. In general, conventional cost budgeting and control systems in mining use a “top-down” methodology, which lacks of necessary details, and fail as a management tool leading to undesirable results [3]."
