R. L. LOOFBOUROW 26.1-WATER FLOW, USE, EFFECTS, CONTROL Sec. 4 discusses ground water as a mineral resource. This section deals wits its control. 26.1.1-IMPORTANCE Flows of water have an important effect on the cost and progress of many deep excavations. The existence of water limits the methods which can be used in some and presents hazards in others. Lowering the water table may reduce the flow of springs and wells, with legal liability. Some mine water is used directly, some must he treated before discharge, and some contains dissolved solids which can be recovered profitably. Loss of life, property and production from flooding is grim, yet scores of mines have worked safely for generations under ground-water reservoirs, lakes and even the sea. The need for better control of mine water is measured by the severity of recent floodings, concern with the quality of the effluent, and direct and indirect costs of working wet ground. There are improvements in freezing in shaft sinking. pumps and their controls, treatment of mine water before it is pumped, bulkhead construction and certain efforts to reduce inflow. 26.1.2-PUMPING COST VS. COST OF WET WORK Direct operating and capital costs of pumping are more evident than indirect items, such as provision of extra standby power and maintenance facilities, The total of all these items is the cost of pumping water from an excavation. This is only a part of the extra cost of working wet as compared to dry ground. Less productive methods, less efficient equipment and more expensive explosives may have to he used in wet work. Wet rock plugs certain equipment. Maintenance is higher and labor less efficient. The cost of any means of keeping work drier should he weighed against the higher cost of working wet. The true difference in the cost of working wet ground, compared with dry, probably is known at only a few places (see checklist of cost items. Sec. 26.4.13). An extreme comparison of mining wet and dry ore is available from Ambrosia Lake, N.M. (Fig. 26-1). Between 1963 and 1967, a wet and a dry mine were worked by the same company under conditions otherwise comparable. Average operating cost at the wet mine, pumping 1,600 to 1,800 gpm. was $16.06 per ton of ore. The comparable figure for the dry mine was $7.50. Principal differences included the fact that the wet mine was worked from drainage levels below the, ore with rail haulage, the dry mine in the ore with off-track equipment loading and hauling to the shaft. In the wet mine, ore packed in chutes, cars and skips and froze in surface bins, stockpiles and trucks. Wet-mine costs included drilling drain holes, building and maintaining ditches and pumping water containing abrasive solids.

The recovery of gold by ore leaching is influenced by the size of the particles and the chemical environment. Within the experimental error associated to the testing of gold ore, results of a series of leaching tests conducted with natural ores rather than monosized samples confirm that gold dissolution increases with decreasing ore particle size. The tests also indicate that the dissolution of gold in the ore within a size interval is weakly affected by the intensity of the size reduction method.

The vast majority of U.S. coal preparation plants utilize screen-bowl centrifuges to dewater their fine clean coal products. In light of this popularity, researchers at Virginia Tech have engaged in a variety of laboratory and industrial field test programs to develop technological enhancements that have the potential to further improve the performance of this important solid-liquid separation process. These enhancements, which include simple design modifications and new reagent packages, have been shown to significantly improve solids recovery and reduce product moisture in several experimental trials.

Hard times continued to plague the industry when the calendar rolled over to 2000. During 1999, the United States economy had grown vigorously, capping the longest economic expansion in United States history. However, the mining industry was not so fortunate. Commodity prices remained in a slump in the “new-economy” that was fueled by excitement and speculation about the power of the Internet during the infancy of the Information Age. Much of the investment money that once went to mining and exploration was now headed to the world of virtual gold mines. SME President Donald E. Ranta implemented new technology into his plans for SME. His two major goals were new membership growth and to foster the establishment of the comprehensive Internet presence for the Society’s technical information. His strategic priorities included enhancing the quality and quantity of publications, programs, meetings and short courses. “The Internet is the vehicle that will advance the priorities,” he said.

The MTA in conjunction with LIRR, are in the process of expanding one of the largest commuter railroads in the country, with over 260,000 passengers a day. The LIRR, which provides 700 passenger trains every 24 hours, can?t continue on the present growth course as a joint tenant in Penn Station with Amtrak and NJT. For this reason, in conjunction with the fact that over 53% of LIRR?s current riders into Penn Station are ultimately bound for the East Side of Manhattan opening, have created the need for the expansion of the LIRR. The complete expansion will cost approximately 6.3 billion dollars and all of the contracts are to be completed by 2013.

In report the results of performance of research works on building up of the connected geoecological and geomechanical monitoring system for modelling and study of a state of mining massif in a region with large-scale underground mining works are discussed. The connected geoecological monitoring requires radical change of methodology of carried out works. To carry out modelling and researches it is impossible without construction of the integrated connected information model of region. Basis of construction of information systems and databases for all sections of Earth Sciences is the set of the approaches, among which, for example, methods of remote sounding, GIS- and GPS-technology etc. Computer technologies are basis on the "supercomputer" technology. The results of performance of some researches for regions of excavation of deposits of potash salts in Russia and Belarus are presented.

Limonite is a general term for a group of amorphous iron oxide and iron hydroxide materials. It is considered as one of the very refractory iron ore types due to its wide variation in chemical composition, iron content, moisture content and easily sliming in the course of comminution. Iron grade of test sample is 25.48%, the iron minerals are mainly limonite; and the gangue minerals consist of quartz and feldspar in majority, secondarily silicate minerals. In this test work, high intensity magnetic separation (HIMS)-cationic reverse flotation and magnetic roasting-low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) tests were conducted on limonite ore. The test results show that the concentrate with iron grade of 50.97% and recovery of 68.50% can be obtained by HIMS-cationic reverse flotation technique; while using magnetic roasting-LIMS technique, the better concentrate indexes of iron grade of 60.36% and recovery of 89.71% are achieved, and the iron grade of tailing is only 4.42%. Therefore, the magnetic roasting-LIMS technique is a better suitable method for beneficiation of low-grade limonite ore. The Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM) has been retained by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) to design the Mather Interceptor, a portion of the South Interceptor and Mather Interceptor program. The Mather Interceptor consists of 14,667 feet of 54 to 72 inch gravity interceptor. Approximately 90 percent of the alignment will be constructed via tunneling. Cobbles and boulders in a sand/gravel matrix dominate the ground conditions combined with seasonal perched groundwater table at some of the deeper reaches of the alignment, impacting design consideration. This paper will present the results of a comprehensive geotechnical investigation conducted for this project and in-depth technical evaluation of various trenchless techniques feasible for tunneling in the cobble and boulder laden formations of this project. This paper will also present the risks and issues of the design alternatives and selection criteria.

This paper presents tunnel design considerations for the SR75/282 Transportation Corridor Project in Coronado, California. The project is managed by the City of Coronado in cooperation with Caltrans and the US Navy and may include a one-mile long twin-tunnel section with two options: a 36.5 foot diameter twin-bored tunnel or a twin cut-and-cover box. The alignment crosses the Coronado Fault, and design provisions were needed at the fault crossing to maintain life safety and prevent rapid inundation of the tunnel in the event of fault rupture. These provisions are discussed along with considerations related to liquefaction and ground shaking. The project is currently in the planning stage with construction to start around 2012.

RJB Mining is the largest coal producer in the UK. In January 1995 the Company acquired the Central North and Central South Regions of British Coal consisting of: ? 15 operating collieries -including capital equipment ? 2 care and maintenance mines ? 16 operating Opencast sites ? Interest in 26 prospective and 46 potential Opencast sites ? Approximately 417 million tonnes of proven and probable reserves and considerable mineral resource ? 9 million tonnes of coal stocks ? Long term contracts to supply approximately 90 million tonnes of coal to National Power and PowerGen to the period of 3 March 1998 ?Approximately 7,600 employees and 4,500 mining contractual labour. Up to the acquisition RJB Mining had the capacity to produce 14 million tonnes of saleable output with an approximate 1,500 strong workforce.

There is as yet no accepted method of predicting flotation frother performance in plant processes based on laboratory scale characterisation techniques. This paper investigates the use of dynamic surface tension, using the maximum bubble pressure method, as a means of evaluating frothers and frother mixtures. An adsorption model is presented, which has been used to quantify the role of frother type and concentration during frother bubble interaction, based on the correlation of model parameters to physical frother characteristics. This approach was found to provide useful insight with respect to blending and selection of flotation frothers to meet specified flotation performance criteria.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

Construction of Ontario Power Generation?s 12.8-m diameter, 10.4-km long water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is underway. The tunnel is being excavated by means of a 14.44-m diameter open gripper Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel lining is constructed as a two-pass system with the initial lining consisting of rock bolts, mesh, steel channels or ribs, and shotcrete, and the final lining consisting of pre-stressed cast-in-place concrete with a waterproof membrane. In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. For a state whose roots are in mining, most Colorado residents probably do not realize that the industry still contributes heavily to the state’s economy. In 2005, the industry contributed, directly and indirectly, about $8 billion to the state’s economy, according to the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). It employed nearly 10,000 people at mines and support businesses. And the mining industry in Colorado is one of the highest paying occupations in the state, averaging about $80,000 a year in wages and benefits. The state’s coal mining industry produced nearly 36 Mt (40 million st) of coal in 2005, valued at $800 million, the CMA said. That was seventh in the nation. And Colorado’s only major gold mine produced 10.2 t (329,000 oz) last year, valued at $124 million. That was third in the nation. And Phelps Dodge’s Henderson Mine produced about 12.7 kt (28 million lbs) of molybdenum, valued at $350 million. Colorado is the largest molybdenum producing state in the nation.

In the mining industry, where some of the vehicles are larger than a one-story house, tire maintenance cannot be accomplished by the tire shop alone. It takes an army of people to maintain a fleet of 100 trucks that may be transporting gold, iron ore, oil sand, copper or coal from an openpit to a refinery and eventually delivering the product to a customer. Everyone working in and around these mammoth machines has a duty to help with the maintenance of the tires, whether they know it or not. These responsibilities comprise observation and reporting hazards up to and including changing out a tire and recording the information in a tire-tracking program such as TreadStat.

Surface analysis by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of samples taken from the galena flotation section of the Hilton Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited are presented. Flotation rate and pulp chemical data taken during the sampling period are also presented and discussed. Surface analysis suggested that, under normal operating conditions, an overlayer of precipitated calcium sulfate existed at the surface of the sulfide minerals. In particular, there was a decrease in the surface concentration of calcium sulfate for the concentrate samples relative to that occurring on the tailing samples. This suggests that the flotation process was selective against minerals which have calcium sulfate predominating at the surface. Heterocoagulation of hydrophilic calcium sulfate on to the galena surface considerably reduced galena flotation rate. Methods to control calcium sulfate precipitation, which include sodium carbonate treatment of the pulp, are also discussed. Sur- face analysis results of samples taken from the Hilton Concentrator during sodium carbonate addition to the grinding circuit are also presented. This shows clear evidence for the removal of calcium sulfate from the mineral surfaces without concomitant surface precipitation of calcium carbonate. Reasons for the apparent dispersion of precipitated calcium carbonate are discussed. Galena flotation rate was increased by the addition of sodium carbonate apparently due to the removal of interfering calcium sulfate.

A series of difficult ground conditions causing high groundwater inflows and hazardous gas intrusion abruptly halted the construction of a 6.4-meter (21-foot) finished diameter and 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) long tunnel planned to serve as a 4-millioncubic meters (1-billion gallon) per day capacity river outfall for treated wastewater. Some 808-meters (2,650-feet) section of the constructed tunnel, TBM, and all other tunneling equipment were completely flooded with hydrogen sulfide laden artesian groundwater. The subsequent pumping and tunnel recovery efforts were unsuccessful and the tunnel was abandoned. In the end, the construction contract was terminated and options to redesign and reconstruct the project were re-evaluated to maximize the use of already constructed tunnel facilities such as the construction access and inter-mediate shafts and six outfall diffuser shafts in the river.
