As hydrometallurgy matures as a technology, more of its existing process knowledge will continue to be summarized in the form of detailed mathematical models. This development is happening at a time when major improvements in computer hardware have reduced the cost of computing. The opportunity then exists, through the solution of these process models, to design, control, and optimize hydrometallurgical plants on the basis of the physics and chemistry of its processes and less on empiricism. In this paper, a review of the current capabilities of sensors and phenomenological models for selected hydrometallurgical processes is presented. Future trends, in terms of the control and optimization of hydrometallurgical plants, are then explored. The possibility of simultaneously optimizing plant design and associated process control system performance is discussed.

Certain bituminous coals are known to contain appreciable quantities of natural fossil or subfossil resin. Such resinous coals are found in the western US, particularly the Wasatch Plateau coalfield of UT. Some of the seams in this field contain an average of 5% resin. This fossil resin has been recovered by gravity and/or flotation processes since 1929. Resin concentrates thus produced are of low quality and are usually refined by solvent extraction. The purified resins are of commercial importance in the adhesive, coating, rubber. and ink industries, etc. An improved flotation technique has been developed which involves ozone conditioning to selectively float resin from high-volatile bituminous coal. A laboratory investigation was performed on flocculation following the addition of polymer to slurries flowing through pipes and in-line (static) mixers. Results are presented showing the effects of flow velocity, pipe length, in-line mixer elements and the use of multiple addition points. Flocculation performance was measured by the settling rate and the supernatant turbidity. The effects of agitation and mixing time are shown to be generally consistent with the results of equivalent tests (both batch and continuous) conducted in stirred tanks.

This investigation mainly focused on designing a bunker system for a large underground coal mine. The primary purpose of this bunker system was to keep high- and low-sulfur coal segregated on the underground belt system. These bunkers were also required for protecting the mine faces from out by belt delays. Methodologies used in developing this plan are briefly discussed. The final design and the procedures formulated for implementing it are also presented.

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillar mining (panel width) is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to prefailure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25% to 40% higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Prefailure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to design improvements, as mines become deeper.

According to statistical theory, the geostatistical methods of ore reserves estimation are greatly superior to any other method. However acceptance of geostatistics by the mining industry has been slow and not as wide spread as one would expect. One of the reasons for this cautious approach is that it is often questioned whether the geo- statistical assumptions are satisfied in real world situations. When blocks of ore are estimated in a mineral deposit, geostatistical theory can be used to determine which method of estimation should give the best results. Using this theory, the relationship between estimated value and true block value can be quantified. There is a need to verify that this theoretical relationship is actually observed in practice, and that the block estimates ' obtained using the theoretical ly best method of estimation, are actually most similar to the true block values. In this paper the results expected according to the theory are compared with the results actually obtained. Sample values from a large bedded gold deposit have been used. Blocks of ore have been estimated by a number of methods, including the polygone, inverse power of the distance, kriging, logarithmic kriging and other geostatistical methods. The block estimates have been calculated from samples on a large grid, and compared with the true block values obtained from additional samples on a much smaller grid. The results of this comparison show extremely good agreement between theory and actual results.

In situ leaching of disseminate gold deposits has been studied from a theoretical perspective to outline the operating environment for the process. Rock permeability and the relationship of permeability to the site of gold particle deposition are key factors in predicting the efficiency of in situ leaching. Permeability measurements, however, have rarely been made during gold exploration, so that secondary geologic features of the deposit must be used. This paper examines some of the geologic characteristics of disseminated gold deposits and comments on the problems and possibilities of in situ leaching of gold.

Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father's avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin's personal guidance was often an intensive, fast- moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student. The paper presents the development of a thermodynamic based network analysis model. It uses transient heat flow algorithm for computing the heat flow from strata and predicts the environmental condition in different branches of the network. Along with the environmental condition, the mass flow distribution in network is computed by using nodal pressure method based on linear theory approach. The algorithm has been coded using object oriented programming approach and it has been validated in actual field condition. The correlation is satisfactory.

The sampling of precious metal deposits entails inherent problems due to the low mineral abundances, high mineral specific gravities, skewed grade distributions and wide ranges of mineral particle sizes. Sampling practices and precautions are discussed with particular attention to each of the tripartite stages of sampling - sample acquisition, sample preparation and sample assaying. Practical examples of approaches to the sampling problem are given and some examples of significant sources of error are provided from gold and silver deposits in North America.

Mine drainage has high acidity and sometimes contains more than the allowable concentration of ionized iron. In such a case, mine drainage is neutralized with calcium carbonate and calcium hydroxide to separate precipitates, such as the iron hydroxide and gypsum generated. Currently, most of these precipitates are not utilized and are accumulated in tailing dams. As a result, the service life of the tailing dams is reduced. This becomes a matter of concern, since securing sites for such dams is difficult. A most effective means of solving this problem would be to promote utilization of these neutralized precipitates. This paper reports on the results of studies on neutralized precipitates produced at the old Matsuo Mine (Iwate Prefecture), which has the largest neutralization treatment facility in Japan. As a result of the studies, the following was proposed regarding application of neutralized precipitates. Utilization as ferrite: Mix ferrous hydroxide and ferric hydroxide in water to synthesize magnetite-like ferrite, to be used in the manufacture of magnetic markers for a mobility support system for blind pedestrians, or in producing magnetic fluids for sink-and-float separation of nonmagnetic metals and nonmetals. Utilization as hematite: Bake ferric hydroxide to produce hematite, thereby extracting metallic iron for paint pigment as well as for the manufacture of ironware by local industry. Production of aluminum sulfate: Precipitate aluminum ions from water and add sulfuric acid to produce aluminum sulfate.

Discovery of a mine is a complex affair. No mine is simply found but comes about through the efforts of many. It is difficult to establish "credit" when a mine is found and becomes a viable operation, or "guilt" when a mine is lost, goes bankrupt, or remains undeveloped. The story of the Toquepala and Cuajone developments entails various stages of: (1) discovery and recognition; (2) testing and innovation; (3) political and industrial negotiation and intrigue; and (4) finance, development, and operation. The Toquepala and Cuajone projects introduced innovative drilling techniques, were among the first major porphyry copper deposits to utilize induced polarization (1P)geophysical methods, were among the first deposits to undertake complete feasibility studies on drilled- out ore bodies, and were developed by the first large Western Hemisphere copper mining consortium. Many persons have contributed to the development of these two great deposits. Some of the names have been lost and certain contributions have gone unrecognized. I apologize for these omissions.

While the United States has been the world's largest volume producer and marketer of phosphatic fertilizers for many years, it has recently suffered heavy losses for a variety of reasons. While improved economic performance is expected, it is still at least a year or two away. But when recovery does manifest itself, it will likely yield only mediocre profits, due in part to the fact that about 50 percent of output is export-dependent. Therefore, there appears to be limited likelihood that profits will be adequate to justify the further outlay of large amounts of capital for expansion.

The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. . The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

About 60 small surface coal mines in Pennsylvania participated in a program designed to improve safety performance in the workplace. The method involved the use of safety sampling and observation to assess the degree of safety exhibited by workplace behavior and conditions. Data were collected through the use of on-site safety instruments covering seven major occupational positions typical of small surface mines. Workplace events observed (acts and conditions) were assigned a hazard classification. Feedback was initiated to improve safety performance in areas failing to conform to appropriate safety standards. Results suggest that the variety of unsafe acts and conditions associated with the companies observed are extensive. Further, the experiences drawn from this pilot project have proven the need to pursue this behavioral approach. Future research should concentrate on subjecting the present approach to a strict experimental design involving randomly selected “poor risk” mines.

This paper intends to present a general methodology implemented in a software package and which can be applied, whatever the exploitation methods, mining constraints and time basis, to mine planning and production schedulling. Examples are: presented covering the medium-term and short-term planning procedure and the production schedulling for two underground mines located in the South of Portugal (Neves- -Corvo and Aljustrel Mines). Both are complex suiphide orebodies with differ- ent exploitation methods (Neves-Corvo: cut-and-fill; Aljustrel: Long-hole stop- ping).

The adhesion (and de-adhesion) of Bacillus subtilis to dolomite was determined under a number of conditions of initial concentration of the organism, agitation, mineral particle size and temperature. Rate equations curves for both adhesion and de-adhesion were constructed, with the rates of de-adhesion being about half that of adhesion. From the temperature data the energy of adhesion was determined to be about 1.02 kcal/mol. Adhesion of dolomite to B. subtilis follows a Langmuir isotherm. Equilibrium constants, adhesion capacity and Gibbs free energy of adhesion of B. subtilis to dolomite (at pH 6.6) were determined. These values were compared to similar data for adhesion of B. subtilis to apatite and dolomite.

A review of recent phosphate beneficiation developments shows that Flotaire cells, ranging from 0.20 m to 2.44 m in diameter, have been examined in pilot scale and commercial plants. Applications of the column cells have included sized feed fractions using anionic and cationic reagent systems. In plants where the Flotaire was installed as a test unit or as an optional circuit, its use has been largely discontinued. On the other hand, when management committed to installing the Flotaire as an integral part of the flowsheet, the performance expectations were met or exceeded.

Quartz and phosphate grains from concentrates and ores from Atlantic Coastal Plain sediments often are wholly or partially coated by humates. Coatings were studied in situ using infrared microscopy, by transmission Fourier transform infrared of extracts, and scanning electron microscopy. The 14C age of the coatings is about 20,000 years, much younger than the mineral substrates. Coatings on double flotation concentrates indicate that the conditioning pH may be too low, allowing coated quartz grains to follow phosphate grains through beneficiation. Organic matter from coatings may contribute to processing problems as well as affect final product quality.

The most important Witwatersrand gold placers occur on extensive unconformity paleosulfaces that were produced during protracted periods of fluvial degradation. The erosional etches on what was generally unlithified sub-strate indicate that low sinuosity erosion patterns prevailed. The transport systems were dominantly braided fluvial with a minor debris-flow component. The placer sediments were non-cohesive sands and gravels. They were evidently transported by fluctuating, yet perennial, discharges across extensive, low relief braid plains, not far from littoral environments. Progress made in understanding heavy mineral transport processes now emphasizes the importance that selective entrainment probably had in producing concentrations. Cognizance that these characteristics are not unique to the Witwatersrand should be taken into account when designing exploration models.
