INTRODUCTION Early rock-bolting practice usually consisted of ran¬domly installing bolts, using hand-held drilling equip¬ment such as air-leg mounted sinkers or stopers. As bolting technology evolved, the practice of installing uniform bolt patterns was developed, utilizing random bolt installation as required within the uniform pattern. The uniform rock-bolting technique, when used as the principal method of rock support, requires drills and jumbos designed specifically for rock bolting. This equipment is similar to conventional face drilling machines, except that the jumbos can orient the drills to obtain any necessary bolting angle; often, this means bolts may be installed at or near perpendicular to the centerline of the drift or stope opening. Fig. I shows a typical rubber-tired rock-bolting jumbo of the type commonly used in drifts and room-and-pillar mining. Modern rock-bolting jumbos are capable of drilling the required holes, inserting rockbolts, and torquing them to proper levels. Jumbos also are available for use with resin-anchored bolts. Probably the most unusual of this type utilizes a rotating bolt turret that carries the rock drill, resin charging unit, and the bolt in a single mechanism. Once the turret is loaded with the resin and bolt, further manual effort is not re¬quired. Drilling and bolt placement are accomplished by the operator from a station remote from the bolt site. Fig. 2 shows this turret device. Roof-bolting jumbos are available mounted on rail, crawler, or rubber-tired chassis. Various types of rock drills are used. Depending upon the type of rock, these may include rotary, percussion, or rotary-percussion drills. Fig. 3 shows a typical rail-mounted jumbo. During the last 10 years there have been many new developments in transport and handling equipment. Important technical and economic developments that can be used to reduce costs are; new terminal and materials handling concepts large river tows - 40,000 tons and 9000 hp towboats slurry loading and unloading of ocean vessels long distance pipelining of solids development of the shuttle train (unit train) large ocean barges ? 25,000+ tons ? pushed & towed 150,000 ton self-unloading super tankers - 300,000+ tons container shipping Some of these developments have been discussed at SME meetings in papers describing the transportation of minerals from new mines. But, only a few papers described improved transportation from older operations. Since transportation is a major part of the delivered cost for minerals, the economic benefits to be gained by putting new transportation developments to work are very substantial. Frequently good transportation planning and management makes the difference between a marginal ore body and a very profitable one.

Gentlemen: The subject of this paper is: ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS AND RECLAIMERS. Against an urgent world wide energy crisis, the role of bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers in the surface mining of fossil fuels and other ores has been raised to new prominence. This paper will review the reasons for the expanded application of bucket wheel technology, its unique contributions, and other factors relative to volume, cost, versatility, and efficiency. Today, surface mining is faced with the twin challenge of (1), accelerating the rate of removal of massive quantities of overburden and ore, and (2), replacing comparable high volumes of overburden back into the mined-out portion of the pit. Optimum quantitites for - a single electrical power plant now range from 5 to 15 million tons of coal per year. The use of bucket wheels offers the best method for meeting this challenge at lowest possible cost. For example, an advanced application that also satisfies environmental concerns involves the simultaneous functioning of two bucket wheel excavators during surface mining operations. Working at spaced intervals and different levels in conjunction with a transfer conveyor and stacker, one excavator removes the ore while the other one transfers overburden to a stacker that replaces it back into the open pit. The result of this continuously operating cycle is: (1) removal of ore and replacement of overburden back into the pit in massive quantities, (2) at accelerated volume and extreme low cost that cannot be matched by conventional loading machines of any size, and (3) fulfills a basic environmental requirement which is to

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

Experiments using an optically polished Pyrex disk and aqueous dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) films showed that the velocity with which the films recede increases markedly if the runs are repeated at short time intervals, where equilibrium cannot be reattained. This results from DAA molecules being desorbed from the disappearing liquid-air interface and being deposited on the solid-air interface being formed. Controlled experiments with Pyrex particles in a modified Hallimond tube showed a similar increase in flotation rate, again due to excess adsorption of DAA molecules that were transferred to the solid-air interface from the bubble on contact.

Coal preparation for a company having several sources of coal and several contracts for sale of coal was modeled. The objective was to minimize wash loss by selecting the quantity of coal to be supplied from each source and the appropriate washbox specific gravity setting to yield contract quality for a given shipment. constraints inposed by silo and stockpile sizes, plant and rehandling capacities, and varying coal quality specifications were included in the model. Solution is by iterative linear programming on an Apple II.

The use of stone in building construction predates written history. From the time that stone was first used, builders have constructed stone buildings predominately from local or regional materials. However, since World War II, the stone business has become increasingly global. For example, French limestone is now sold to builders in the United States, and American granite is shipped to Japan. The internationalization of architectural and construction firms has encouraged this trend. Differences among nations in trade practices, environmental demands and the level of knowledge of dimension-stone characteristics make international trading in stone a risky and potentially disastrous business for unwary participants.

The addition of organic and inorganic dispersants to aqueous suspensions of heterogeneous particles (kaolin) was found to significantly affect the solubility of metal ions from kaolin particles and stability of the dispersion. In most of the industrial applications of kaolin, highly concentrated slurries of controlled stability and fluidity are required. The solubility of kaolin particles in terms of aluminum and silicon ions and its effect on the stability of the slurry was investigated. The main objectives of this study were (1) to study the effect of the extracted metals on the properties and performance of the slurry, (2) to understand the reaction mechanism of dissolution of metals from kaolin, and (3) to understand the interaction mechanism of dispersants with kaolin particles. The controlling variables were dispersant dosage, slurry pH, solids loading, and aging.

This section is addressed to the computing needs of corporate (top) management which are less specialized than the computing needs of operating or divisional management described in the previous sections. It is essential that the computer be used as a tool to serve corporate management and that information and results are presented in a succinct form. A key responsibility of the manager of computer applications is to communicate well with corporate management. A common trap for computer management is to allow the development and implementation of sophisticated and academically interesting computer applications which do not enlighten corporate management in its decision-making task. Thus it is essential to devote sufficient time and effort to designing and specifying a computer system before developing and implementing the system.

A method is proposed to perform on-line data adjustment and inference of unmeasured variables, using measured flowrates and on-stream assays in mineral processing plants. The algorithm minimizes a weighted sum of squared residuals of the measured variables and squared species imbalances around the flowsheet nodes. The method is based on a trade-off between the material transient accumulation, evaluated by the imbalances, and the data inaccuracies, evaluated by the residuals (i.e. the adjustments brought to the measured values). A recursive algorithm is developed for on-line implementation of the method. It is a real-time extension of the hierarchical method for balancing steady-state data for bilinear mass conservation constraints. An illustration for a simulated flotation circuit is provided.

The implementation of NAFTA in January 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects on the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investments. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results during the past two years have shown that it is government and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine tuning of trade flows through so called “free-trade" agreements.

Strains of Bacillus polymyxa, preadapted and grown in the presence of corundum, were found to be capable of the efficient separation of hematite from alumina. Results of tests performed using binary hematite-corundum and ternary he- matite-quartz-corundum mixtures in the presence of cells and metabolic products separated from the adapted bacterial culture indicated that more than 99% of the hematite could be efficiently separated through selective flocculation after desliming. It was found that alumina-specific bioproteins and other nonproteinaceous compounds were secreted by bacterial cells after adaptation to the mineral. Annually, the US coal industry generates and must dispose of over 200 million st (180 million t) of coal refuse, expanding a major environmental problem. The purpose of this research was to investigate the feasibility of utilizing coal refuse as an aggregate in concrete. This paper reports on findings of the initial phases of a project to determine the viability of replacing traditional concrete blocks with refuse blocks for use in ventilation stoppings in underground mines. Refuse, collected from three active preparation plants in eastern Kentucky, was used as the primary as aggregate in the preparation of concrete cylinder. Stress-strain analyses on the refuse cylinders yielded compressive strengths of from 59% to 77 % of the control-group strengths. Low variability within the groups was found while significant differences between the groups existed. On-going determinations of the effects of weathering on the refuse cylinders is being conducted and will be completed in early 1995. The research results are favorable for the future direction of the overall project objectives.

Until the suspension of conventional operations in 1996, the White Pine Mine was the second-largest active underground copper mine in the United States, underlying an area of approximately 30 km2 (13 sq. miles) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine operator intends to initiate in-stope solution copper mining by circulating a solution (lixiviant) of mine water, sulfuric acid and ferric iron through rubblized ore. As planned, the solution would be retired in the mined-out stopes following completion of the solution-mining activities. Investigations into the fate of the retired solution indicated that the solution, through time, would change from an acidic, metal-rich solution to a near-neutral, reducing solution containing much lower concentrations of metals. Investigations included reaction-path modeling (EQ3/6) and laboratory and in-mine tests. The combination of neutralization and reduction will result in precipitation of most metals, primarily as metallic sulfates, chlorides and sulfides.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full scale model mine using a Joy 12 CM 10-AA continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters included: mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback and combinations of scrubber, directional sprays or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either directional or symmetrical water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing results.

This paper shows how the efficiencies of size-reduction processes depend on the mode of particle constraint and energy transfer within the comminution device: namely, whether the process consists of single-particle loading, confined-particle-bed comminution or loose- (unconstrained-) particle grinding. The relative efficiency of single-particle comminution, ball-mill grinding and particle-bed comminution in the recently invented high-pressure roll mill is evaluated by making use of the self-preserving nature of the size distributions of comminuted products. The highest energy efficiency can be achieved by utilizing a hybrid two-stage system in which the material is first ground in the high-pressure roll mill and then the ball mill.

Investigations were performed on fine grinding of bituminous coal in a laboratory-scale pulverizer. The results indicated that the breakage behavior at relatively coarse sizes (i.e., greater than about 20 µm) is essentially "normal." However, at fine sizes (i.e., less than about 10 m), there is clear evidence of reagglomeration. A simplified population-balance model for simultaneous growth and breakage is formulated. Breakage rates and breakage distributions were assumed to follow the patterns typically observed in simple grinding systems. It is recognized, however, that solid particles and agglomerates may exhibit different breakage behaviors. Agglomeration rates are assumed to be determined by contact probability, i.e., by the relative numbers of interacting particles. Based on comparisons between model simulations and experimental data, it appears that agglomerate rebreakage rates and fragment size distributions are quite different from those for solid particles. The result is that product size passes through a minimum and then increases with time as agglomeration begins to dominate.

Computer based techniques for solving the Ultimate Pit Limit Problem have appeared in mining literature since the early 1960's. The majority of papers pertaining to this subject can be partitioned into one of two categories: discussion of the pros and cons of a particular algorithm, or a case study presenting specific applications of an algorithm. Subsequently, there has a1 so been considerable debate concerning the best techniques between, essentially, two camps: those favoring the moving cones techniques, and those favoring the techniques which yield true optimal pit designs. The purpose of this paper is not to add to this debate, but rather to present a few new ideas (partially a new look at an old idea), which can be easily implemented to noticeably improve any ultimate pit limit approach independent of the particular algorithm used. These ideas fall under the heading of "bounding the optimum" (Barnes and Johnson, 1980).

The Middle Ordovician Simpson Group in the Arbuckle Mountains of southern Oklahoma contains sandstones of unusual purity. These have been exploited as glass sands since 1913 (Ham, 1945). Where quarried, the sandstones are uncemented or weakly cemented, greatly facilitating mining and processing. The origin: sedimentary setting, and lack of cementation of these valuable sands has been the source of much discussion. The lowest of the sandstone units in the Simpson is at the base of the Oil Creek Formation. The basal Oil Creek sandstone is exposed in a series of accessible quarries north of the town of Mill Creek in Johnston County. Virtually all conclusions and generalizations concerning origin of the Simpson sandstones are based upon observations made in these quarries. The three Simpson sandstones overlying the Oil Creek share many of the same distinctive qualities, and there is an assumption that they share a common origin.
