Everywhere you turn today there are articles on artificial intelligence and the rapid emergence of expert systems. Expert systems form a class of software that has developed as a result of the large research effort to develop computers and software that think intelligently. By definition, an expert system is a computer program that contains the knowledge component of an expert skill, can offer intelligent advice and justify its line of reasoning. Expert systems can advise people on what actions to take and when, assist in the diagnosis of the physical condition of a human patient or piece of equipment, or even take actions without human guidance, as in process control applications. Expert systems can also explain the line of reasoning behind a particular piece of advice or query for information from the user. Expert systems can be used as advisors to newcomers in any field in which mastery is attained by many years of experience. They often can provide expertise more uniformly and rapidly than human experts. Expert systems can also provide a means of documenting expert knowledge and procedures and provide a common repository for a changing knowledge base. The expert system can represent the best expertise available, thought out in the absence of pressure situations. Each of these attributes or characteristics should be helpful in improving typical concentrator control systems.

Of the 28 accident/injury classifications listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, handling materials is second only to roof falls in terms of generating the highest number of reportable accidents in active underground coal mines. Two materials-handling activities that cause numerous injuries each year are the categories of ‘handling supplies or material, load and unload’ and ‘moving power cables.’ Mechanization and mine worker activity training are two methods that can aid in preventing these injuries. This paper describes three mechanical methods – the mobile manipulator, the in-mine hoist, and a cable-handling system - being developed and tested at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Two of the devices are specifically designed for loading, unloading, and moving supplies and materials, and the third device is for handling trailing cables in the confined spaces of coal mines. Also described are safety solutions developed for underground coal mines geared to showing miners safe and unsafe ways of performing various materials-handling tasks.

The marine geologist and coastal engineer have at their disposal a wide variety of geophysical tools with which to investi¬gate sea floor topography and structure. Such devices include towed magnetometers, shipboard gravimeters and a variety of acoustical systems for recording the relief of the sea floor and buried structural features. The versatility of this latter group of systems lends itself to a variety of applications essential to those projects where excava¬tion of the sea floor is required. This paper describes the use of several acoustic devices and their Limitations and presents a case history in which a rapid survey from a small vessel provided detailed information critical to the planning stage of a specific coastal project. In this discussion, shallow water is defined as depths less than 150 feet. At present, this limit includes the maximum depth of economic dredging and most other offshore activities. To be sure, the maximum depth at which routine useful work can be accomplished is rapidly increasing, but the majority of current marine activities are located in water depths here defined as shallow.

Several zinc showings, exhibiting many similarities to the well-known Balmat-Edwards zinc deposits of New York State, occur within the Grenville Supergroup strata of the Mont-Laurier Basin, Quebec. Metallogenic mapping programs have revealed much of the stratigraphic control of this mineralization. This control is observed on both regional and local scales. At the regional scale, these showings are confined to the perimeter of the Mt.-Laurier Basin, while at the local scale, a definite association between the zinc mineralization and dolomitic marble horizons is clearly exhibited from detailed mapping. These new exploration guidelines have proven to be useful for base-metal exploration in the Mt.-Laurier Basin and should be applicable to the entire Grenville Province.

INTRODUCTION One of the most important tasks facing the opera¬tors of deep-level gold mines is supporting the roof strata in the immediate vicinity of the stope faces. Some of the deeper gold mines operate at depths ex¬ceeding 3.0 km; the extreme mining depths and the tabular nature of the gold-bearing reefs result in high stress concentrations at the abutments of the stope faces. These, in turn, lead to extensive fracturing of even the hardest quartzites. Although most of these fractures develop in a stable manner, there have been many instances where rock failure occurred suddenly, resulting in a considerable amount of damage to the underground workings. Such violent rock failures commonly are known as "rock bursts," and they are typical of many hard-rock mines that are operating at great depths. To safeguard mining personnel and equipment against the effects of stable and unstable rock failures, adequate support must be provided to the fractured roof as quickly and as effec¬tively as possible. Traditionally, timber props and timber packs have been utilized to provide roof support in gold mine stopes up to 1.5 m wide. Both methods of support suffer from the fundamental disadvantage of generating sup¬port only in reaction to movement of the strata. Since unrestrained strata movement often results in a break¬down of the frictional forces that preserve the stability of the intensely fractured roof strata, it is essential that stope supports have rapid load-bearing characteristics. An equally important requirement is that the roof sup¬ports be able to accommodate displacements of the rock mass. A third requirement of roof supports in gold mine stopes is that they must be able to accommodate the high rates of stope convergence typical of rock bursts. The hydraulic prop is the obvious choice for sup¬porting the stope faces in deep-level hard-rock mines. Since hydraulic props can be installed with a positive setting load, they can provide roof support that is independent of strata movement. By equipping the hydraulic props with yield valves, they meet the require¬ment of being able to accommodate rock-mass displace¬ments. However, the requirement of being able to accommodate high rates of stope convergence without overloading or damaging the rock strata was rather difficult to meet. The first introduction of hydraulic roof supports into gold mine stopes showed that conventional hy¬draulic props, such as those used in coal mines, were completely unsuitable for a number of reasons, in¬cluding: 1) Since drilling and blasting are used to break the ore in gold mine stopes, supports installed close enough to be effective are exposed to the vigor of the blast. Conventional coal-mining props suffered extensive blast damage, despite being protected by a blast barricade. 2) The environmental conditions in gold mine stopes favor corrosion. The high quartz content and the abrasiveness of the ore further aggravate the problem by damaging the protective coatings on the hydraulic surfaces. Simply changing the design of gold mine props to have the piston project from the bottom rather than from the top resulted in dramatic improvements in the service life of the props. The improvement was attributable to external water in the stope washing the fine quartz grit away from the hydraulic surfaces, rather than concentrating the particles between the cylinder and piston of the prop. 3) The most obvious deficiency of conventional coal mining props was their inability to yield rapidly enough to accommodate the high convergence rates of rock bursts without overloading the supports. As a result of the first disappointing results with hydraulic supports in narrow hard-rock stopes mined by drilling and blasting, a comprehensive research and development program was undertaken. The hydraulic props resulting from several years of research and exten¬sive field trials are described herein. To date (1978), more than 130,000 of these props have been manufac¬tured and used successfully in a number of mines and under a variety of geological conditions. Although many of the detailed specifications are directed spe¬cifically to gold mining conditions, there are a number of points that are of general importance in the design of underground support systems for tabular excavations in hard-rock mines of any type. SPECIFICATIONS FOR RAPID-YIELDING PROPS Yield Requirements The yield requirements for hydraulic props in deep¬level hard-rock gold mines are summarized in the fol¬lowing paragraphs. Slow Yield Load: The design of the yield valve must allow the yield load to be preset to between 300 and 400 kN. This flexibility is necessary to account for the differences in the strength properties of the roof and floor strata. Drop in Load Under Slow Yield: The drop in sup¬port load during a slow yield should be as small as possible, but it should not exceed 5% of the slow-yield load. Rapid-Yield Load: The load exerted by the prop during periods of rapid stope convergence should be as close as possible to the slow-yield load. The rapid-yield load should not exceed the slow-yield load by more than 15% at yield rates of 1.0 m/s. The limitation of the upper valve of the yield load is important; it deter¬mines the hydraulic performance of the yield valve. The hydraulic props that satisfy this criterion have performed well, even under severe rock bursts. Load Changes Under Rapid Load: On some of the earlier rapid-yielding props, conditions of dynamic in¬stability were observed; these conditions resulted in a complete breakdown of support resistance. It is essen¬tial that the force oscillations during rapid yielding be as small as possible, not exceeding -*5% of the average rapid-yield load at a yield rate of 1.0 m/s. Approximately sixty, small, surface coal mines in Pennsylvania participated in a program designed to improve safety performance in the workplace. The method involved the use of safety sampling and observation to assess the safe standards of worker behavior and work conditions. Data were collected through the use of operation-specific, on-site safety records covering seven major occupational units. Workplace events observed (acts and conditions) were assigned a hazard classification; feedback, both immediate and delayed was initiated to improve safety performance. The experiences drawn from this pilot project have proven the need to continue to pursue this behavioral approach; however, a stricter methodology needs to be adopted in the collection and analysis of data.

In December 1983 the author undertook an investigation in east Texas which was organized to learn the feasibility of applying geophysical techniques over shallow lignite deposits. The work embraced experimental high resolution seismic reflection and offset Wenner resisitivity sounds over three 4 to 4 mile test sections. This site also was sponsored by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a consortium headed by North American Coal Corporation. The principal objective of this investigation was to learn whether the aforementioned geophysical techniques could be applied over shallow lignite deposits (i.e. located at approximately 100' to 300' in depth) and consequently provide structural and stratigraphic information useful for resource and reserve characterization. A secondary objective was to determine if these same techniques could disclose the nature of the overburden and the distribution of ground water therein.

After some decades of lying low and being treated as a second rate fuel, coal is back in the news. Production is rising. Predictions are for an ever expanding use, and they differ only in their rates of increase. Even the FBI is involved in trying to stop fraudulent sales of non-existent coal lands and leases to the innocent. In short, we have a nearly chaotic boom on our hands. Obviously our energy production base is in the process of undergoing a major shift, and the process will present many problems. However, there is little doubt that the industry has the basic strength and organization to be able to deal with the new issues that will arise as a result of these shifts in production and use of coal. After all, it does produce nearly 800 M tpy now, and coal is the single biggest fuel for generation of electricity. This role of coal is illustrated in the table below, which shows the coal equivalent quantities of various fuels used in the production of electricity.

There are no particular nor unique features of iron mining that are not shared in some degree by all mining ventures everywhere. There are, however, at least three problems that have acquired a special emphasis from a unique cause. That cause is the embarrassment of riches under which the industry is suffering. The most obvious' feature of iron mining today is the copious abundance of usable ore and its almost universal distribution over the face of the earth. By the term "usable ore" is meant ore that is amenable to reduction by the usual and conventional processes. Amidst this plenty, three problems become acutely emphasized: 1. The geographic location that will provide a mine with the best market opportunity. 2. The size of the orebody that will be required to' return the preproduction investment. 3. The geometry and configuration of the orebody that will permit quality control measures to be effectively executed.

Pull-out tests were conducted on cable bolts grouted with concrete, and cement paste. The influence of several parameters on the performance of these cables were studied under loading rates varying from very slow to relatively fast. These parameters include water-cement ratio, cable surface conditions, curing time and embedded length. In addition to being more economical, the results indicate that cables grouted with concrete have higher ductility and ultimate bond strength as compared to those with cement paste only.

Eastern Mesabi taconite is one of the hardest rocks known, but fortunately it shows little tendency to pack in the crushers, when the minus 5/16 inch material is removed. The crushing circuit is essentially as shown in the Engineering and Mining Journal article, "Reserve's New Taconite Project", dated December, 1956 except that the grizzly screen between the two stages of gyratory crushing has been eliminated. The Reserve operating staffs aim is to utilize the crushing equipment in such a manner that the maximum tonnage of taconite can be crushed to the required size at a minimum cost. As is readily apparent, the primary consideration is to produce a desired size product, with the other operating factors to be balanced, thus achieving the best setting for each crusher. Much effort has been expended toward the development of a satisfactory sized material for feeding the rod mills. The characteristics of this feed must allow the following situations to be handled by the existing equipment: 1. The material being fed to the rod mill must be such that it can be fed into the unit with the proper quantity of water to maintain the correct density within the mill. 2. The rod mill must produce a product from this feed which can be handled without difficulty by the magnetic cobbing and ball mill circuit. 3. The incidental tramp must not exceed that quantity which can be handled easily after the rod mill and after the ball mills.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent, such as SO2 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage countercurrent leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with SO2 or sulfuric acid.

Fifty years ago, belt scales were mechanical devices based on a complex weight balancing design. Today's systems use load cells to assess material weight, belt speed sensors and microprocessor-based integrators to continuously compute the rate of material transferred along a conveyor. Belt scales have become important assets to a plant. They help maximize the use of raw materials, control inventories and aid in the manufacture of a consistent product. Choosing and installing a belt scale system may seem complicated but it can be simplified by following a few guidelines.

Climax byproduct-plant tailing assayed 0.019% WO3. Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were performed to investigate the possibility of recovering additional tungsten values from the byproduct-plant tailing. The methodology used in the study and the results of this investigation are discussed.

Starting from a crude ore assaying 45.6% Fe, a fine-grained oolitic iron ore was concentrated by the oil agglomeration technique to 90% Fe recovery and 65% Fe assay. The ore required grinding to minus 5 µm to effect adequate liberation, and the technique yielded optimum results at pH 9. The roles of pH, collector, and bridging liquid concentrations on selectivity and yield of iron minerals in the concentrates are discussed.

Operational and economic factors tend to favor the application of continuous processes in preference to batch processes in the majority of mineral processing applications. In this paper, the requirement for a continuous elution process is established and the development of a large-scale pilot plant is described. It is based on a continuous elution apparatus that has a number of special features. These are the subject of various patent applications. The apparatus is suitable for adaptation to the AARL, Zadra, and other methods of elution. The performance of the atmospheric continuous elution system (ACE) is concluded to have significant advantages over the batch process.

The use of crushed power station slags, both natural and coated, as granules for roof shingles shows some promise. Test shingles weathered for some years showed rust spotting and granule deterioration as serious problems. Chemical analysis on a particle-by-particle basis using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy system showed the wide variability of chemical composition of the granules within a given sample. Analysis of particles acting as sources of spotting within the weathered samples showed high iron contents but no rules could he developed for predicting the long-term stability of different compositions.

There are four main requirements which must be considered when selecting a wire rope for the best serviceability. A proper choice is made by correctly estimating the relative importance of each of these requirements and selecting s rope which has those qualities best suited to withstand the combination of destructive forces expected under continued service. A wire rope should possess: 1. Strength sufficient to support the maximum load expected and with s proper safety factor. 2. Ability to withstand bending and to resist bending fatigue without failure of the wires. 3. Ability to withstand surface abuse such so abrasive wear, pounding, and wire scrubbing. 4. Ability to withstand abuse such as crushing and distortion.

Any discussion of barite mining is virtually impossible without considering, almost in the same breath, the many other variables, such as beneficiation, transportation, infrastructure and location that impact the economics of a particular barite orebody. My comments will be limited to just the mining aspects of barite orebodies and these observations must be considered in proper context with all other parameters affecting exploitation of a barite property prior to final decision on economic feasibility. In many instances low-cost mining situations are more than offset by high-cost beneficiation requirements. Likewise, there are cases of relatively high-cost mining associated with no or low-cost beneficiation requirements thus permitting economic exploitation. Barite orebodies and occurrences are almost as varied as the number of occurrences. As in most mining situations, the design of a mine plan and implementation of a proper exploitation program must be approached on a case by case basis. Proper and sufficient geologic control of a barite orebody must precede the development of a mine plan. Generally speaking, barite orebodies can and, at many times, do "strange" things; pinch with depth; almost never increase in size with depth, overturn, fault-off, change grade, etc. Due to the extreme variable nature of most barite orebodies, a mine plan and its implementation must be as flexible as possible. The ability to quickly adapt to variable conditions will greatly enhance the economics within a particular barite mining environment.

Industries in general, and mining in particular, have become safer than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction, as required, through job redesign, work procedures and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control must be practiced in a manner consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, which include the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to: • present a set of analytical tools to analyze injury experience data. • apply these tools on a case study example, • discuss the results of the case study, and • identify the application limitations and the future research needs.
