The work discussed in this report was done by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for determining trace amounts of fluorine in coal. Samples of coal mixed with calcium oxide as a fixative agent for fluorine were ashed at 600° C and the residue was fused with sodium carbonate. The melt was dissolved in phosphoric and sulfuric acids and distilled to separate the fluorine) which was determined in the distillate by a SPADNS-zirconium spectrophotometric method. Fluorine determinations of 83 commercial coals ranged from 0,001 to 0.019 percent.

Native asphalt was produced by four companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm. R. L. White Co., Dabney Quarry, Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by three firms: American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation), from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds. Gilsonite production in 1985 declined 57% owing primarily to reduced oil well drilling activity. The value per ton was essentially unchanged.

This Bureau of Mines report investigates the horizontal trajectory of boreholes drilled in coalbeds using the rotary drilling technique. Test holes drilled in coalbeds showed that the path of a borehole in the horizontal plane depends on drilling assembly configuration, drill bit rotation, and coalbed geologic features. An assembly that contained an 18-ft (5.53) long drill collar and two centralizers had the best horizontal stability evidenced by trajectories that deviated less than 16 ft (4.9 m) from a target at 1,000 ft (305 m). Removal of one of the centralizers resulted in a loss of control of hole trajectory in the horizontal plane. Generally, holes tended to turn to the right, presumably because of right-hand rotation of the bit. Deviations from the original bearing line were as much as 200 ft (61 m) or more at a depth of 1,000 ft (305 m).

The Beckley mine is one of five new mines in a heretofore unmined portion of the Beckley coalbed. The remoteness of these new mines from prior mining and their greater overburden preclude applying methane emission experience obtained in the old mines. Four sections of the Beckley mine were monitored. The data gathered show that variations in methane emission cannot be explained by variations in coal production. Although overburdens varied by as much as 30 pct, no correlation with methane emissions could be determined. The rib emissions increase with increased length of rib from a section advancing into virgin coal and do not decline over a prolonged idle period (32 days) whereas some decline has been measured for a section not mining into virgin coal. The indication is that degasification prior to mining will reduce the hazard of methane emissions in this area of the Beckley coalbed.

This Bureau of Mines report provides the enthalpies of formation of cupric bromide and cuprous bromide as determined by hydrochloric and hydro-bromic acid solution calorimetry. At 298.15 K, the values are -33.10 ± 0.4 kcal/mole for CuBr2, and -25.24 ± 0.25 kcal/mole for CuBr.

Illegitimate loads on a mine dc power distribution system can be detected by measuring a superimposed ac current. To implement such a scheme, a 10-volt, 3-kHz voltage is applied at each dc power substation. By this means, the mine dc power distribution network, consisting of a feeder and trolley wires with a grounded rail return, is caused to serve also as a 3-kHz ac distribution network.

Beginning in 1991, scientists at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory recorded interviews with individuals who are recognized as experts in mine emergency response. These 30 veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years of mining experience. Interviewees included representatives from mining companies, the United Mine Workers of America, and State and Federal agencies. Most of their comments dealt not so much with technical aspects of particular mine emergency responses, but rather the human side of more general topics, including preparedness, experience, people on-site, mine rescue teams, and decision-making. An analysis of their interviews provides an overview of lessons learned on-site at some of the largest mine disasters since the mid-1940s. This knowledge was gathered so that it could be provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is expected that the collective wisdom obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions that will have to be made on the scenes of future events.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of the zinc and lead contained in brass smelter flue dusts, which constitute a recycling or disposal problem. Tests on brass flue dust from several sources were made in a quartz tube, heated by an electric furnace to temperatures as high as 1,050° C. The dusts were mixed with carbon and heated in an oxygen-free atmosphere. It was demonstrated that 98 pct of the zinc and 12 to 25 pct of the lead, both in the metallic state, could readily be removed from the dusts. It was also found that 75 pct of the zinc could be recovered, with less than 0.1 pct of the lead, in the absence of chlorides. Pelletization techniques were investigated and 0.6 inch pellets were found to be optimal. Pelletizing results in a tenfold reduction in volume.

The magnitudes and directions of in situ stresses affect the stability of mine openings, as well as the type and amount of ground support needed to maintain a safe working environment for miners. Using hollow inclusion stress cells, researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health obtained two in situ stress measurements from the face of two footwall lateral drifts at the Stillwater Mine near Nye, MT. The first measurement, obtained in 1997, was collected under the valley beneath the Stillwater River. The second measurement was obtained in 2002 under the main frontal massif of the Bear tooth Mountains in the western sector of the mine. Although few data are available, the major principal stress under the valley has been recorded as nearly horizontal in a north-south direction perpendicular to the ore body, while beneath the mountains, stress runs east-west parallel to the ore body. This paper documents the measurements, describes the in situ stress state, and discusses a finite-difference analysis of the biaxial test.

"INTRODUCTION Two holes were drilled on the G. S. Stiner zinc prospect, in the Lead Mine Bend area of Union County, Tenn. The holes were drilled in the vicinity of an area of gossan float and were bottomed in the Maynardville formation of the Nolichucky shale. Drilling was started January 24 and completed February 16, 1947. The total footage drilled was 421.2 feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The drill holes are located in the bottom land northeast of the store (fig. 1 and 2)."

Reduce injury to people or damage to equipment when a scheduled production blast is detonated. Approach The essential elements of an effective blast area security system were identified through case studies of five mining operations where the blast area guarding practices were considered to be superior to those generally found in the industry. These elements were used in making recommendations for improved blast area safeguarding practices. Background The blast area security system is a means by which the mine operator prevents injury to people or damage to equipment when blasting is performed. Analysis of blasting accidents showed that most blasting accidents occur during scheduled blasting and are due to inadequate blast-site security. Factors contributing to the system's breakdown are failure to clear the blast zone, inadequate guarding. and failure of personnel to follow instructions, retreat to a safe location, and/or take adequate cover. Mine personnel, visitors and even trespassers can inadvertently wander into a blasting zone unless proper procedures exist to ensure that all personnel are cleared from the blast zone and kept safely away until after blasting IS completed. Statistics show that the blaster is the miner most frequently injured In these accidents.

Increasing use of continuous miners, especially the boring type, has focused attention on the inadequacy of face ventilation in coal mines. The bulk of the machine, the rapid advance of working faces, and the increased liberation of methane from the larger expanse of freshly exposed coal surfaces have created ventilation problems that were unknown with conventional mining equipment. Ignition of gas, especially that caused by machine bits striking hard rock or pyritic inclusions, have increased at an alarming rate. As the mines penetrate beds under thicker cover at an ever-increasing rate of face advance, this problem will probably increase unless face ventilation is improved. A previous survey, described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5414, Auxiliary Ventilation of Continuous Miner Places, disclosed that auxiliary fans with tubing generally improved circulation of air and removal of gas at the face. The study here reported attempts to examine, face ventilation at various mines and to note any plan or innovation of. air coursing that industry might adopt to reduce the danger of gas ignition. 1. Mine drainage constitutes surface or ground water which flows from mines or mine sites and is usually characterized by concentrations of acidity or alkalinity. 2. The regional geology controlling the ground water flow pattern in conjunction with the life cycle mining plan can serve as a basis for making decisions about quality of water that can be expected to be encountered. 3. In regard to the prevention and control of acid water formation in underground coal mines, much is left undone in research and education: (A) Very little literature is available on this specific subject although much has been written on water management in underground mines. (B) Little or nothing is contained in the text books and curricula used in mining departments at colleges and universities with the result that educational offerings may be seriously deficient in these areas. 4. Prohibiting water entry into underground coal mines is the best method of preventing water pollution. Since this is not possible as mining operations are extended, preventing water or oxygen from contacting acid producing material may offer the next best alternative. 5. More emphasis is needed during the mine planning stage on steps to prevent water pollution. Such life cycle considerations as type of mining, sequence of development and spatial configuration as well as the elements of the drainage network and final network organization and extent must be considered.

Reduce longwall intake contamination by controlling respirable dust generated by the stage loader. Approach Install a water-powered scrubber on the stage loader immediately outby the crusher. Dusty air from the crusher is drawn through the scrubber and a clean air discharge is delivered into the primary face airflow. How It Works The contamination of intake air is a significant dust control problem often overlooked on many longwall faces. This dust source contributes to the full shift dust exposure of all face personnel, and thus can significantly affect compliance with Federal regulations. Several sources contribute to contamination; however, dust generated by the stage loader crusher is the single largest source. The breaking action of the crusher generates a tremendous quantity of dust, which mixes with the primary ventilation airstream and is carried down the entire length of the longwall face. The installation of a water-powered scrubber (see diagram) has proven effective in controlling crusher-generated dust. The scrubber is mounted immediately outby the crusher. "HISTORYThe origin of roof bolting as a means of roof support is obscure. During the past 23 years a method was developed by the. St. Joseph Lead Co: at its mines in southeastern Missouri, ranging from occasional use of single bolts with small bearing plates to systematic networks of bolts utilizing continuous bearing plates. Officials of this company are not certain which of its employees suggested their use. Many instances of occasional use of roof bolts have come to light during the past few years in widely separated mining districts, such as in West Virginia, Alabama, Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming bituminous coal mines, and in Pennsylvania anthracite, Lake Superior iron, and Colorado lead-zinc mines. A few of the known installations have boon in place as long as 40 years.These installations usually were made to supplement wooden timbering in mine openings whore space was constricted, although it had been reported that roof bolting was started as a systematic moans of roof support in at least three instances but was abandoned because the cost of installation was excessive. The extra expense above that of conventional timbering could not be recaptured through economies resulting from increased efficiency, such as would be gained through mechanized mining.Roof bolting was first mentioned in mining literature in an article by W. W. Weige 3/ in Engineering and Mining Journal of May 1943, in which he described the use of bolts with 4-inch channel bearing plates in mines of the St. Joseph Load Co."

Reduce dust on long wall faces by using a gob curtain to lower air leakage Into the gob and raise the airflow along the face. Approach A brattice curtain (gob curtain) Is hung between shield #1 and the rib in the headgate entry forcing the ventilating air stream to make the 90° turn and stay on the face side of the shields rather than leaking into the gob. How It Works Air leakage is greatest in the headgate area because the gob behind the first few shields remains open due to the roof bolts in the headgate entry. In addition to the open gob, there is a large gap between shield #1 and the rib. Prevention of air leakage behind the shields is accomplished by the Installation of a curtain between the first shield and the rib extending from the roof to the bottom. The curtain Is advanced with the shield line each pass and is helpful In maintaining a sufficient air quantity along the face. The biggest Improvement due to this curtain is seen in the first 25-30 shields where the Increased air volume lowers dust concentrations through dilution.

General Six open-pit metal mines, five copper and one molybdenum, were visited during the course of the research. Four were investigated twice, in summer and in winter, in order to determine the effects of seasonal variations In temperature and moisture upon the measured parameters, Permission to enter the fifth mine was received too late to make an examination during the summer months. The sixth mine was visited to confirm the results obtained from the other five and specifically, to observe how the project recommendations (as will be presented in this chapter) would apply to open-pit metal mines in general. Information gathered during the ten plant visits is sufficient to form an adequate data base for the report. A complete presentation of all field trip data is given in Appendix 1. Further, a detailed description of the electrical distribution and grounding practices at each mine is also contained there. Typical System. At a typical mine as shown schematically in Figure 62, one or more substations with resistance-grounded secondaries are employed to transform the incoming utility-voltage to the lower potential used by the mining machines, generally three-phase 4160 V. At this level, pit distribution is carried on overhead lines, supported by wooden poles, to supply switchhouses located in benches near the particular piece of equipment. This section contains a summary of our investigation of the soil conditions (type, porosity, moisture content, etc.) at the two sites (Lanse and Kato, Pennsylvania) selected for field testing of latex as a soil sealant. Other natural conditions such as rainfall, frostline, depth of the water table, etc., were also measured and recorded for possible later use in assessing the effect of the latex seal on the total environment. The numbered sites referred to throughout this report are shown on the maps of the Lanse and Kato sites (Figures 1 and 2). KA, RB and KC are positions at the Kato site - all other numbered positions refer to the Lanse site. Two other terms used throughout the report which should be explained are “horizon” and "profile". These are synonymous terms for soil layer, A horizon (or A profile) referring to topsoil and B horizon (or B profile) referring to subsoil. The properties that control the flow of water through the soil are of special interest because these will also govern the passage of a sealant into and through the soil. Normally the particle size distribution is a good measure of soil permeability, which is directly proportional to sand content and inversely proportional to silt and/or clay content. Tables I1 and I11 show the percentages of gravel or stones, sand, silt and clay of Lanse and Kato soil samples. According to the United States Department of Agriculture classification, the gravel is ,ignored and the residue separated into sand, silt, and clay fractions. Figures 4 and 5 indicate by means of the USDk soil texture triangle that the variability of composition of Lanse soil ranges from sandy loam in the creekbed to clay loam. The variation is even greater among soil samples from Kato. Porosity of soil, also known as percent voids, is another indication of how readily water will travel through soils. Soil density usually increases and porosity decreases with depth, and as expected, the porosity of the top soil at Kato, a forest, is exceptionally porous and open (see Table IV) The pore diameter and length of soil capillaries is extremely variable, and its distribution in the field is impossible to determine. In addition to the capillaries, soil also contains many macro cracks, crevices, and passages around stones and roots. All these affect the flow rate of water through soil. Poiseuille's law states that the rate of flow of a liquid through a narrow tube is proportional to the 4th power of the radius of the tube. Pore size normally decreases with depth and in soil containing appreciable amounts of silt and clay this is especially true. Thus, deeper soils should be less permeable and such was the case at Lanse and Kato.

During the detection phase, several procedures can be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SIN) . • Subarrays of up to 10 seismometers should be used. The apparent failure to obtain improvement in SIN in the Westinghouse subarrav work is probably due to excessive noise in the electronics. The spacings needed for sensors in the subarray must still be established. • The sensors should be buried. Even burial to a few feet will probably give appreciable reduction of noise. A deeper burial will probably further reduce the noise; and, if the seismometers can be put below the weathered layer, the signal level will probably be increased. The reduction in noise by burial will be especially effective during high noise periods due to wind or rain. • Before attempting detection, the waveforms should be bandpass filtered. The bandpass should go from 25 Hz to an upper frequency of 100 to 200 Hz. Further measurements with a low noise system must be done before the signal-to-noise ratio can be determined for the 100 to 200 Hz range. Any narrow band noise should be removed by notch filters. • If noise levels differ among seismometers of a subarray, weights inversely proportional to the noise power should be applied to the seismometers. • Automatic methods of screening data for possible signal arrivals should be developed, but the final determination that the signal on a subarray output appears to be from a miner should be made by an analyst. Detection of "signal" on several subarrays should be required for positive identification. In the location phase, after detection: • If repeated signals are received, they should be coherently added (stacked) to give as good a SIN as possible for use in determining signal arrival times, to be used in location computations. The miner should, if possible, repeat the signal 25 to 50 times.
