As part of its water-jet assisted rock cutting research, the Bureau of Mines has initiated a study into the mechanism of rock fragmentation by water-jet-assisted mechanical tools. The objective of this research is to increase coal extraction efficiency by seeking an improved understanding of the synergistic relationship between mechanical cutters and water jets, enabling the design of more effective cutterheads. Rock chips collected during laboratory traverse speed jet-assisted cutting tests were analyzed with respect to the size distribution of the chips and the forces measured during cutting. As the water-jet pressure was increased, the size distribution of the product became coarser with V-face type cutting tools producing less fine material than conical cutting tools. Fracture mechanics theory accounted for less than 10 pet of the energy consumed during fragmentation of the rock. The energy consumed by processes other than rock breakage decreased with the use of water jets and increasing advance rate.

An underground investigation was designed and implemented by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-driven longwall recovery rooms supported with pumpable concrete roof supports. The pumpable roof supports were instrumented with hydraulic pressure cells to measure support loading. Displacement of the support was also measured to assess the support reaction to ground movements. Movement up to 12.5 m (40 ft) into the roof was measured with sonic probes and multipoint extensometers. Borehole pressure cells were installed in the panel fender and outby pillars to evaluate load transfer. Shield loading was also assessed to determine the impact of the panel fender yielding on face loading. The results show that the yielding of the panel fender produced uncontrollable convergence that caused yielding of the shields and stiff pumpable roof supports when the face was approximately 3.12 m (10 ft) from the recovery room. The shields continued to yield until the face advanced into the recovery room. Convergence in the pre-driven recovery room typically reached 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) once the pumpable supports yielded and shed load through a declining residual load capacity prior to being cut out by the longwall shearer. Roof deformations occurred beyond the 10 m (32 ft) horizon with total deformation ranging from five to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches), indicating that standing support was necessary to help control the span as the longwall face advanced into the pre-driven recovery room. Stability improved as the pumpable supports were cut out, thereby reducing the span between the shields and the outby pillars. In the end, the shields were successfully recovered under stable ground conditions. However, a disconcerting discovery was the load shedding of the outby pillars as the recovery room was mined into. This behavior was not expected with a relatively narrow room that is fully supported with standing support. If this mechanism is indeed occurring, the width of the room and performance of the standing support becomes even more critical. Premature failure of the support can lead to excessive convergence on the shield line that cannot be controlled even with modern shields, resulting in instabilities that can lead to catastrophic results. Understanding the load transfer mechanics associated with the advancement of the longwall face into the pre-driven recovery room and the widening of the room to recover the longwall shields is providing valuable information for the refinement of the NIOSH Ground Reaction Curve for standing and intrinsic roof support system design.

The mineral industry in Burundi was a minor contributor to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at just $1 billion for 19812. Coffee and tea continued as the Nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports consisted of small tonnages of wolframite, cassiterite, and baetnasite. Burundi's trade balance of payments situation worsened in 1981, with import payments more than double export revenues. Petroleum imports alone equaled 46% of the export revenue total. By year-end, the only indigenous fossil fuel source to have been found in Burundi was peat, which the Government had been attempting to develop to alleviate some of the petroleum import requirements. In June 1981 the Irish Peat Development Authority, Bord na Mona, signed a 4-year contract with the Burundian Government to supply technical staff for the ongoing peat project work there. Funding for the project was provided by the VS. Agency for International Development and the Government of Ireland. The new contract, which was an extension of ongoing peat research there, represented Burundi's increased awareness of the value of its large peat reserves for both energy and agricultural uses. At yearend, Burundi's Ministry of Public Works and Mines was does to selecting a contractor to study the feasibility of developing Burundi's phosphate deposits. The study would determine the potential for establishing fertilizer production facilities based on the country's phosphate reserves at Matongo-Bandaga, The study's specific objectives are to prove mineral reserve tonnage and grade, draw up mining and processing facility designs, estimate capital and production costs, and conduct a regional market and distribution survey. The cost of the study was estimated at slightly over $1 million, and it should take approximately 16 months to complete. The proposed project will mark the Burundian Government's first step in its plan to exploit on a large scale its natural mineral resources for advancing its agriculture-based economy. Burundi was dependent on imports, which are expensive to transport inland from coastal ports, to supply its domestic requirements for fertilizer. Reduce potential for steering errors during tramming of articulated vehicles, particularly when the operator is seated to the rear of the machine pivot point and is tramming in reverse. Approach Position-sensing and feedback cylinders were applied to the steering cylinders of two S&S cleanup tractors to cause the steering-control lever to match the orientation of the vehicle sections. The vehicles were tested in two working mines. How It Works A position-sensing cylinder (see Figure 1, Item A) is attached to one of the steering cylinders in the cleanup tractor steering system. As the steering cylinder piston rod is actuated by movement of the control lever, hydraulic oil flows from the position sensing cylinder to the feedbck-cylinder (B), causing the feedback-cylinder piston and rod to move. The outside end of the rod repositions the the steering-control lever until its angular position corresponds to the orientation of the vehicle sections.

In December's marketing of 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, domestic producer pricing remained at 53$ per pound, while dealer quoting rose from 47.5¢ to 48.5¢. BORON Domestic production of boron minerals and chemicals reached an all-time high in 1977--1.4 million short tons valued at $236 million. Combined sales of the three California producers topped the 1976 level by 15 percent in quantity and 28 percent in value, a consequence of healthy demand in the glass and insulation industries. Unprecedented demand for boric acid as a flame retardant for cellulosic insulation stimulated producers to utilize fully all available capacity, thereby achieving a record output of 158,000 tons. One company increased output from its existing boric acid facilities and initiated production at another plant that historically had produced only sodium borates. A second company achieved a previously planned 25 percent plant expansion.

The standard heats of formation (?Hf°) of holmium trichloride and terbium trichloride were measured by solution calorimetry. Heats of solution of holmium and terbium metals and their anhydrous chlorides were measured in 4.360 molal HCI at 298.15° K. From these measurements ?Hf° for HoC13 (c) was calculated as -240,290 ±1,700 cal/mo1e, and ?Hf° for TbC13 (c) was calculated as -238,330 ±1,500 cal/mole at 298.15° K.

Provide a method for obtaining in situ measurements of coal cutting forces which are needed for mining machine design. Approach A portable in-seam testing device is carried to the face of an underground coal mine heading to measure the cut-ting force encountered by a continuous miner pick directly at its maximum depth of cut. How It Works The tester frame is attached directly to the coal surface with four one inch diameter threaded studs resin-bolted into 1-1/4 inch diameter holes which are drilled 30 inches deep. Spherical nuts and washers compensate for misalignment between the bolts bearing plate, and traverse beams. Spacers can be placed over the studs to assure that the traverse beams remain in the same plane. Equilibrium phase diagram studies of zirconium- rare earth metal alloys by the Bureau of Mines at its Albany Metallurgy Research Center prompted the development of a rapid gravimetric method for determining rare earths in zirconium in which the rare earths are absorbed from sulfuric acid solution of the alloy on a cation exchange resin . The sample in 10 percent H2SO4 is introduced into the column , the zirconium is eluted with 10 percent H2SO4 , and the rare earths are eluted with (NH4 )2SO4 solution and precipitated with NH4OH . A tracer technique was employed to determine the efficiency of the procedure . Y203 and europium 154 - 152 (Oak Ridge ) were added to 10 g of zirconium and taken through the entire procedure . Recovery averaged 97.6 percent on 0.002 μg europium in the rare earth fraction . Rare earths were determined in the range 0.10 to 90 percent .

Provide a strategy for calculating optimum distribution of selected sensors for detecting underground mine fires. Approach The Bureau of Mines performed research to determine adequate distribution of product-of-combustion (POC) fire sensors within mine entries. This placement strategy would improve the miner's chances for escape by locating sensors where they would most effectively, quickly, and efficiently detect fires resulting from coal or wood combustion. Spacing of Sensors Placement strategy guidelines were based on the performance of 160 F heat sensors with ideal operating characteristics which were placed at intervals of ten feet in underground mine entries. Data obtained from full-scale mine fires were used to estimate fire sizes and alarm activation times for the heat sensors. Various equations were then developed to determine spacing requirements for any fire detection system installed in entries of varying heights, widths, and ventilation rates.

Minimize drilling time in roof bolting. Approach The Bureau of Mines conducted a survey of 34 roof bolting machines used in underground coal mines. Results of the survey indicated that drilling time, bit cost, and respirable dust concentrations and be reduced by using the appropriate bits for drilling, To evaluate bits currently used and to find optimum cutting parameters needed to minimize drilling time, the Bureau tested two bits commonly used in most underground mines on both wet and dry systems. These are the dusthog* and shank type. The dusthog has dust ports in the bit body to remove cuttings. With shank bits, holes in the drill steel do this. Cost of each type is roughly equal. Bolters with dry vacuum systems were tested in the laboratory first. The lab tests were verified by underground tests in several mines. Bolters with low-pressure wet drilling systems were also tested under-ground. Tests concentrated on the effect of rpm, water and airflow rates, heating, wear, bit design and bit type. Lab Results -Dry Drilling Holes were drilled during the laboratory tests using a production model bolter drilling 45-inch-deep holes into mixtures of lime stone and sandstone aggregate. All tests started with new shank and dusthog type bits at 225 and 450 rpm. Thrust was about 6,000 lbs in all tests. Each bit was tested at two airflows, 15 and 25 cfm, airflows which are typical on operating roof bolter bits. Eleven styles of bits were evaluated. On the average, dusthog bits drilled 25% faster than shank types and were always cooler after drilling. The effect of RPM was tested with 5 different bit types. When bit rpm was increased from 300 to 400, drilling rates doubled. With used, well-worn bits drilling time and final bit temperature were more than doubled.

Prediction models were constructed for seam elevation, overburden, and sodium concentration for a lignite deposit in Ward County; N. Dak. These models were developed by mathematical-statistical techniques using surface coordinates as independent variables to permit interpolation between drill holes. The results suggest that sodium concentration in lignite may be predicted in advance of mining. This information is helpful to mine planning, specifically, in scheduling production to deliver a uniform product to existing powerplants.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a method for determining helium in water for use in sampling and analyzing surface and subsurface waters for geochemical survey work. The accuracy of the analytical method is within ±10 percent for samples containing above 20 x 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 H20. The minimum detectable helium-in-water concentration is calculated to be 2 x 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 water. Water samples are collected in 500-cm3 stainless steel cylinders. The dissolved gases are extracted into a cylinder of equal volume containing a known quantity of neon. The resulting gas mixture is subsequently analyzed for helium and neon-21 by mass spectrometry. The volume of helium in the sample is calculated from the mass spectrometric determination of the helium-to-neon-21 ratio, the known quantity of neon used, and the extraction efficiency of helium.

NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic event (induced earthquake) monitoring system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network is a central feature of the system. Mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface. Seismic event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system’s design philosophy, hardware and software components, examples of installations, and a few observational results.

Enhance hydraulic fragmentation technology by developing alternative grout sealing methods. Traditional grout scaling methods rely on chemical adhesion and require large contact areas to restrict high-pressure fluids. Fluid injection into rock requires economical and effective seals. With economical and effective seals, rock is easily fractured in tension by high-pressure fluid injection (fig. 1). Approach An innovative grouting technique was developed and tested by the Bureau. Slowly hydrating expanding chemicals are placed within a borehole and around a section of high-pressure tubing. Testing was conducted using 9/16-inch-OD smooth-walled injection tubes in 1.5-inch-ID holes. Seal lengths weir less than 10 inches and curing times were less than 24 hours.

Analytical results for nahcolite, dawsonite, total extractable alumina, and oil yield are presented for samples representing Green River Formation oil shales in the saline section of two cores from Colorado's Piceance Creek basin. Analyses are also reported for samples extending the analyzed section of Colorado corehole No. 3 beyond that reported previously. These data permit evaluation of the deposit for possible production of three coproducts--shale oil, alumina, and sodium carbonates--from the saline section of the formation at these sampled points.

"INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation. Briefly, blood was layered onto Mono-Poly-Resolving Medium (Flow Laboratories, McLean, VA) and centrifuged at 22 °C and 300 g for 30 min. Neutrophils collected from the second band of this gradient were at least 90 percent pure."

This Technical Memorandum Report is a collection of three working memoranda, prepared during the course of our work for the Bureau of Mines and bound together for convenient reference. These working memoranda present preliminary performance estimates, for baseband voice and narrow- band through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau, for operational/emergency mine communications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; and of theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau. The memoranda examine the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, up- link transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/meter (high) were used; for voice and narrowband, 10-1 for narrowband only. Examples of high, moderate, and low; surface and subsurface; harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

The Bureau of Mines performed elastic-plastic, finite-element analyses to investigate the support performance of hydraulic backfill. A mathematical model was developed for two vertically adjacent stopes separated by a sill pillar. An exact duplicate of a working stope was not intended; however, the model did simulate a working stope to the extent that field measurements from an active stope could be used for comparative purposes. Using a predetermined mining sequence, the computer analysis simulated the mining operation as a series of incremental cut-and-fill steps. Computer results included a complete history of stope closure and pillar stresses throughout the mining sequence. With the mining sequence and rock properties held constant, three separate analyses were made using varying backfill properties. These cases included no fill,-low-to-medium-quality fill, and medium-to-high-quality fill. Results of these analyses show decreases in stope closure and pillar stresses as the backfill quality increases, thus reducing the possible occurrence of rock bursts. Predicted stresses within the backfill compare favorably with field measurements. A relationship between maximum stress normal to the stope wall and the ratio of relative fill stiffness to relative rock stiffness was also indicated.
