The Bureau of Mines hydrogenated coals of different rank that had been irradiated with either x-rays or gamma rays. Lignite, high-volatile A and C bituminous, and low-volatile bituminous coals were exposed to l billion roent¬gens of gamma-ray radiation; specimens of high-volatile A and C bituminous coals from other sources received 6 million roentgens of X-ray radiation. Irradiated and unirradiated control specimens of those coals were hydrogenated in autoclave experiments at (6,000-p.s.i. final pressure and 400° C. with retention times of 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the coal rank and catalytic treatment. Comparison of results from irradiated specimens with those from the control experiments showed that the radiation had no beneficial effect on the coal. High-volatile C bituminous coal may have been affected by radiation more than the other coals. One billion roentgens appeared to reduce the amount of coal converted to liquids and gases by about 10 pct., and 6 million roentgens reduced it by about 6 pct. then catalyzed with tin. In all other cases, the conversion of irradiated coal was either reduced by as much as 4 pct. or was essentially the sank as that obtained with unirradiated coal. Irradiation during hydrogenation nay be effective for increasing the reactivity of coal and should be investigated; further work with coals irradiated prier to hydrogenation is not recommended.

1. The Pocahontas No. 3 and Pocahontas No. 6 ere the two most important beds in Mercer County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 188 million short tons as of January l, 1953. Of this total, 80 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of the Ohio coalfield. Washability analyses were made on 39 coalbed samples collected from a 14-county area. None of the samples were of metallurgical quality as received. Nine of the samples could be sufficiently upgraded to produce metallurgical-grade products, and the remaining 30 samples could not be upgraded to this quality because their sulfur contents could not be lowered to meet the standard. For steam or power generation, 10 of the samples were of medium sulfur content as received and one could be upgraded to a low sulfur content. Of the 29 samples having a high sulfur content as received, 18 could be upgraded to a medium sulfur content. The original sulfur content of the other 11 samples having a high sulfur content as received can be appreciably reduced by removal of the sink 1.58 specific gravity material; however, these coals would be classified as high sulfur coals both before and after removal of the sink 1.58 specific gravity material.

Anhydrous methods were tested for the extraction of beryllium from low-grade source materials. The purpose of the investigations was to find new extraction processes that are applicable to domestic ores. Beryl, helvite, and phenacite materials containing from 0.1 to 2.8 percent BeO were used as starting materials for direct halogenation tests and pretreatment followed by halogenation. The results of the investigations showed that direct fluorination and carbide-chlorination are two practicable methods that can be applied to low-grade concentrates. Treatment of concentrate-carbon mixtures with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride extracted 99 percent of the beryllium in the concentrate; the soluble fluoride product, converted to an oxide, contained 70 percent BeO. Chlorination of beryllium-silicon carbide, prepared from low-grade concentrates, extracted beryllium into the volatile chloride product.

Through the circulation of these reports, it is hoped that sufficient interest may develop among lime-plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the bureau their our experiences with these problems. By such an interchange of ideas, it is believed that conclusion may be reached which will be of practical benefit to try entire industry. Companies which have been engaged in safety work for a number of years are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that it is not enough to supply guards for various pieces of machinery and equipment and to supply safety inspection to see that rules are being carried out. Studies of many safety organizations have demonstrated that the accidents which could have been prevented by proper guards constitute only a small percentage of the total acci- dents, and amount to perhaps not more than 15 per cent. Evidently, if success is to be attained in preventing all accidents which it is humanly possible to prevent, a company must have the cooperation of every employee. Mining particularly presents probably the greatest hazards of any industry. Prevention of accidents. is made increasingly difficult because men often work alone, although generally in pairs, and only in the concentrated systems of mining do they usually work in groups of more than three or four. Supervision is difficult, therefore, and much reliance must be placed upon the individual workmen. In mining, as perhaps in no other occupation, it is of the greatest importance that individual workmen should receive continuous safety education. Within the last few years safety education has come to the front as one of the most important of accident-prevention measures, although it is true that its importance has been repeatedly stressed by the United States Bureau of Mines and other national safety organizations since the inception of the safety movement many years ago. A review of the safety educational methods of some companies in the Lake Superior district should be of interest. Perhaps better methods are in use in other parts of the country, but the methods shown have been instrumental in many cases in reducing the number of accidents. In one mine in the district whose methods are described the frequency of accidents has been reduced to zero within the last two years. A number of other mines in the district have recently gone into the class having no lost-time accidents for considerable periods of time. One company in the Lake Superior region, operating over 30 mines, succeeded during one month of 1930 in operating every mine without having a single accident which caused lost time beyond the day of the injury. Records like these are increasing in number, and while it is believed that they are the combined result of different means of safety activity, it is undoubtedly true that many of these results were obtained through safety educational methods.

Several promising systems for selectively oxidizing the iron in an iron-tin alloy commonly called "hardhead" were investigated in a research project conducted to devise a method for recovering tin from this troublesome alloy. A satisfactory oxidation method was developed and tested successfully on melts of 2,000 grams. Molten hardhead (near 1,080° C.) was blown with air to oxidize iron and leave tin in the reduced state. Recovery of available tin was 96 to 98 percent. Tin products contained 2 to 0.1 percent iron which was reduced to 0.06 percent by filtration at 250° C. Iron oxide formed during oxidation was absorbed by a fluid flux cover composed of 43 percent silica, 17 percent burned limestone, and 40 percent fused borax. Less successful but nevertheless promising results were obtained with mixtures of steam and hydrogen which were sufficiently selective at temperatures between 600° and 950° C. but did not result in complete oxidation of iron. Carbon dioxide-carbon monoxide mixtures also oxidized iron selectively but incompletely. Both stern and carbon dioxide systems produced sufficiently encouraging results to additional research on these systems.

Like most industries, the refining industry has in recent years been confronted with the problem of a decreased martin of profit, due both to a general lowering of prices and to rising costs. This has resulted in accelerating a program of increased efficiency an evidenced by improved methods and the installation of equipment designed to affect a number of economies hitherto regarded as unimportant. Perhaps the most important of these has been that of fuel economy for, as is not often realized, a refinery consumes about one-tenth as much fuel as it produces. A recently completed canvas., made by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of determining the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States, showed the following outstanding points, (1) a decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1926 of approximately 4,000,000 barrels as compared with 1925; (2) a small decrease in the use of coal; (3) a material increase in the use of gas, both natural gas and refinery gas; and (4) a considerable increase in the use of petroleum coke.

This report deals with the combined friction and suspension effects in the reinforcement of horizontally bedded mine roof by bolting. Other reports have treated these two effects separately. Friction effect refers to the reduction of bending in a laminated roof due to the clamping action of tensioned bolts. If the beds tend to have unequal deflections, the bolts oppose this tendency, thus creating a suspension effect, which consists of a transfer of part of the weight of weaker or thinner beds to the flexurally more rigid beds within the bolted unit. The combined effects of friction and suspension on the bending of the beds, whether an increase or a decrease, are difficult to generalize because they depend on the bedding sequence and the bolt pre-tension. Some analysis of the bedding sequence usually is required to determine the critical bed within a set of bolted beds. However, if the suspension effect is substantial and if the bolts are pre-tensioned, then the greatest bending stress is likely to occur in the thickest bed. Findings are based partly on theory and partly on tests of mine-roof models in a centrifuge, which were found to verify the theory. Mathematical formulas are obtained for the change in maximum roof bending stress and for the change of roof deflection due to the combined friction and suspension effects. The maximum bending stress is needed for designing a roof-bolting system and the deflection for evaluating its effectiveness.

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of various types of crushers for use with the Bureau-developed pneumatic concentration technique for mica. Three types of crushers were investigated in this study, a roll crusher, a jaw crusher, and a hammer mill. All the mica concentrates produced contained over 82 percent mica, but recoveries varied considerably. The roll crusher gave the lowest recovery of 46 percent of the mica followed by the jaw crusher with a recovery of 50 percent of the mica. The hammer mill proved the most effective, producing four concentrates with recoveries of at least 70 percent.

This report is a comprehensive summary of the results of the propagation measurements program conducted for the US Bureau of Mines under Contract H0366028. Data was gathered in the MF frequency range from a cross sample of six mines representative of the industry having typical wireless requirements. From the raw data which was gathered, a logical method of data reduction is presented which culminates in a set of average attenuation characteristics for all mines visited. These characteristics define a typical MF wireless system when the communication range requirements are known. Direct through-the-earth propagation and the range enhancement mechanism due to coupling on and off conductors are evaluated and related to the planning of a typical wireless MF communications system.

An investigation of geologic structure on macroscopic, mesoscopic, and microscopic scales was conducted on near-surface igneous and metamorphic rocks in which the existing stress field was determined by in situ methods. A consistent NE-SW orientation of the maximum compressive stress in the horizontal plane at four of five test localities appears due to the intrusion of NW-trending diabase dikes. Structural features at the mesoscopic scale show no consistent directional relationship to determined stress directions. Petrofabric diagrams of open microfractures show preferred orientations, but these are not consistently related to the orientations of larger structural features, such as joints, foliation, or mineralized shear zones. However, at five of six test sites the preferred direction of microfractures occurs nearly perpendicular to the maximum principal stress directions; an anomalous parallel relationship exists at a test site in an intrusive rock body. The results suggest that the open microfracture subfabric may provide a means for gaining information on the directional properties of stress fields. Such information can be obtained from oriented cores taken from holes which exceed the approximate 100-foot depth to which other in situ methods are presently limited.

The Nation's steel industry is largely dependent on shipments of manganese from foreign sources for steel production. An adequate substitute for the manganese requirements of our present steel technology would improve our national self-sufficiency and also contribute substantially to the conservation of our manganese resources. As each of these objectives is a major interest of the Bureau of Mines, possible substitutes for manganese in steel were investigated. Titanium was selected as the most promising substitute because the published results of several investigations indicate that titanium would perform the most obvious function of the manganese in steel: The elimination of iron sulfide and its deleterious effects. The investigation involved extending the published data on titanium additions in steel to provide enough information for an accurate evaluation of the practical value of the substitute. Therefore, quantitative data were obtained on the partition of sulfur and carbon between iron and relatively small titanium additions.

The Bureau of Mines prepared submicron tungsten powder by reducing tungsten hexachloride with hydrogen. The particle diameters of the resulting tungsten powders ranged from 0.015 to 0.046 micron. Within the limits of the variables investigated, no clear-cut correlation was found between process conditions and final size of the powder. Oxygen was the major contaminant in the product; being present both as an adsorbed gas and as suboxides of tungsten. Studies showed that the powder yielded compacts of approximately 45 per-cent of theoretical density when compacted mechanically. Low-temperature sintering produced more rapid densification in these compacts than in compacts prepared from conventional powders. Adding up to 20 percent ultrafine powder to conventional tungsten powder caused an increase in density upon compaction with maximum densification occurring at approximately 12 percent ultrafine powder.

Objective As mines become safer and disasters fewer, a time may come when no employees in the mining industry have any practical experience in managing a mine emergency. To fill an emerging gap in mine emergency response training, a multidisciplinary team of researchers and computer programmers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has developed an intervention for mining personnel who would be in leadership positions in the command center during emergencies. It is called MERITS, a computer-based emergency simulation exercise. MERITS is short for "Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation." It provides trainees an opportunity to gain command center experience during a simulated underground coal mine emergency. MERITS allows trainees to practice information gathering, situation assessment, decision-making, and coordination skills without risk to personnel or property. Individuals representing mine emergency response personnel, various State safety officials, and private mine management from three States have participated in MERITS training. What Is MERITS? MERITS is an extension of previous work that compiled a knowledge base relevant to mine disaster management via interviews, analysis of literature, reviews of past events, and observations of mock mine disasters. Findings from prior research found a need for an alternative method of command center training. This new computer simulation is being used to train emergency command center personnel to effectively manage an underground mine fire. Modeled after training simulations developed for other industries (e.g., to address nuclear accidents, chemical spills, evacuations, etc.), MERITS simulates underground and surface events related to the disaster. It exposes the user to events that typically occur during a mine emergency, such as lack of information and miscommunication. It also presents trainees with issues that must be addressed, such as making provisions for briefing news media and victims' families, ordering needed supplies, interfacing with Government enforcement agencies, and housing mine rescue teams. The outcome of the scenario is determined by the users' decisions and their emergency response plans. Field Results Field testing of MERITS was conducted with eight full-day training sessions at four different locations in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. These field tests benefited from the knowledge and experience of State of Pennsylvania inspection officials, representatives of the United Mine Workers of America(UMWA), and private mine management who served as trainees for the MERITS training sessions. Trainees self-reported an average of20 years of work experience in the mining industry. All trainees had participated in Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) training exercises, and many had been involved in real mine emergencies. Trainee evaluation of the MERITS program is summarized below: •Twenty-six of the 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them know how to prepare for a real emergency. •Twenty-five of the 27 trainees believed that the storyline for the MERITS simulation was either "very realistic" or "realistic." •All 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them learn how to better handle a real emergency. •None of the 27 trainees stated that they were bored during the simulation. After the initial field tests, MERITS was refined and retested during training sessions for individuals from State agencies, the UMWA, and private industry. Mining personnel from underground coal and underground stone mines participated and responded positively to the learning experience. Information on vertical magnetic noise in the voice frequency band, both within and above coal mines, is needed for the evaluation of through-the-earth baseband electromagnetic communications at mines where horizontal loop antennas are used. This report discusses the theory of the source of electromagnetic noise, the propagation of this noise to an observation point above a mine, and its interaction with the local earth conductivity structure, which gives rise to vertical magnetic noise. The relationship of surface noise to underground noise is also discussed. Bureau of Mines investigators made surface and underground vertical magnetic noise measurements at a number of coal mines located through- out the United States. These data were modeled through regression analysis to characterize expected noise levels. The results are presented, including results in one-third octaves for use in evaluating the expected performance of through-the-earth communication systems by articulation-index studies.

Develop a reliable, portable device for non-destructively testing the support integrity of a friction rock support (commonly referred to as a Split Set ). Approach The friction rock support, used to support mine roof and ribs, is a slotted tube driven into a drilled hole of smaller diameter. Upon installation, the tube is compressed radially. The amount of compression is a function of the hole diameter, the strength of the host rock, and the properties of the split set itself. A simple lightweight self-contained device was developed to determine the pull-out resistance of the friction rock supports in-situ, based on measurements of the tube's deformation. The tester measures the com-pressed internal volume of the slotted tube, which has been found to provide an estimate of the support's resistance to pull out. How It Works The tester consists of a pump and expander sections. The expander sections are made from an elastomer membrane which is stretched over two cores, each one inch in diameter and twelve inches long. The expanders are connected by a flexible coupler so that they can fit any alignment of the support.

Develop a technology for producing high-quality hake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. Approach Treat the waste kish as an ore and apply mineral processing techniques of physical beneficiation and chemical purification to produce a range of graphite products com¬petitive with the natural mineral. Background Graphite is a naturally occurring form of carbon with a unique combination of properties that make it indispensable in a very wide range of industrial and consumer applications. It has high electrical and thermal conductivity and remains stable to extremely high temperatures It has a low coefficient of friction and is nearly impervious to corrosion. The steel industry is dependent on graphite in clay-, magnesia-, and alumina-bonded refractories for crucibles, bricks, facings, and coatings. Electrical uses include graphite brushes in motors and generators, and electrodes in batteries. The transportation industry needs graphite for clutch and brake linings, and all industries depend on graphite in seals, gaskets, lubricants, and coatings. The consumer sees graphite in composite plastics and in the common pencil. As with all natural minerals, the availability of graphite is diminishing and costs are rising as quality decreases.

The viscosity reduction effect of varied concentrations of leonardite (a naturally oxidized form of lignite) and leonardite-caustic on the rheological properties of a standard bentonite drilling fluid was studied and evaluated. The minimum plastic viscosity was found to occur at application rates of 4 lb of leonardite and 1.33 lb of caustic per barrel of drilling fluid. Leonardite-caustic treatment was not beneficial in treatment of salt-contaminated drilling fluids. Although filter loss rate was reduced; both yield values and gel strength were increased. Compared with other viscosity control agents) including quebracho) ligno-sulfonate) humic acids extracted from leonardite) as well as other reaction products of lignite) leonardite is less effective at low application rates but is an effective treating agent at rates of 2 Ib/bbl or more. Considering the comparable merits of the substance tested) the major factor in determining which agent to use should be based on cost consideration.
