The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free- swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1963 . In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 6,999 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . San Juan County, which occupies the extreme northwest corner of New Mexico, contains large reserves of coal in the Fruitland formation and in the Menefee formation of the Mesaverde group. The coals have bright luster, are brittle, and break easily in handling. All mines sampled are in the La Plata-Fruitland and Rio Chaco districts of the Durango-Gallup coal field. This large area, all within San Juan County, contains numerous coal beds 5 to 15 feet thick. Ellis2/ mentions the Carbonero (Fruitland in this report) bed in the La Plata-Fruitland district attaining a thickness of 36 feet. This bed has been correlated with the Carbonero bed, formerly mined at Carbon Junction, near Durango, Colo. During the field investigation covered by this report, no operating mine in the Fruitland bed was working a bed thickness of more than 15 feet.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. Gardner, regional engineer, and his staff, of the Central Region of the Bureau of Mines at the time of this work in 1943; also to Kenworthy, metallurgist at the Rolla. The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.

The land-pebble district of Florida, which in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of Sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of limey or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the rushing and formerly lost supplied the feed.

Capital and operating costs have been estimated for separating methane and hydrogen in gas - separating plants designed to produce 90 million scf per day of product gas containing a minimum of 90 percent methane . After a preliminary literature review of various separation techniques , three different processes --moving - bed adsorption using active carbon , oil absorption , and liquefaction -- were chosen for the cost estimates . Three different methane feed gas concentrations , 5 , 20 , and 50 percent ( cases 1 , 2 , and 3 , respectively ) , were chosen as representative methane concentrations for the separation estimates . Capital and operating costs were lowest for the moving - bed adsorption process in all three cases investigated . Operating costs declined from $ 0.24 to $ 0.06 per 1,000 cu ft of product gas , and capital costs declined from $47,490,800 to $7,411,200 as the percentage of methane in the feed gas increased from 5 to 50 percent .

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents the results of structural analyses and full-scale physical tests conducted on a steel-set arch and tri-set. The purpose of the analyses and tests was to evaluate the suitability of these structures for use in roof-fall prone areas. The arch canopy test and design procedures previously developed by the Bureau were utilized in this evaluation. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of the experimental behavior of the structures. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri-sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that these two structures may be considered for use in roof-fall prone areas and for rehabilitation work, provided the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation 1 of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States decreased 2 inches between 1950 and 1955 to an average of 62 inches, which also is 3 inches less than the 65 inches in 1945. The decrease in thickness is due partly to the increased production from strip mines with thinner seams and partly to the increased percentage of total production at underground mines in certain States having thinner seams. The thickness of seams at auger mines was measured for the first time in 1955 and was 53 inches. Though bituminous coal and lignite is mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness -less than 2 feet to ore than 50 feet -a large majority of the production, 65 percent in 1955, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

Laboratory investigations have produced flotation concentrates contain- ing 91 to more than 92 percent titania, with fair recoveries, from the Christy property, Hot Spring County, Ark. The titanium-bearing ore on the Christy property occurs in a quartz-clay- iron oxide mineralization, which contains, on the average, about 6.0 percent TiO2, chiefly as the mineral brockite; brookite and rutile are different crys- talline forms of titanium dioxide. Recent work by the Bureau of Mines has shown that titanium chloride can be produced readily from the rutile-type mineral by reduction with coke fol- lowed by low-temperature chlorination. Metallic titanium is in turn derived etallic from the chloride by the Kroll process .

This report describes methods of using sodium for reducing titanic chloride, developed as part of Bureau of Mines activities at Boulder City, Nev., to improve the extractive metallurgy of titanium. Theoretical indications pertaining to the major chemical reactions and possible side reactions of the process are compared with experimental observations. Low-temperature reduction equipment is described, in which titanic chloride was reduced with sodium at temperatures between 97.5° C., the melting point of sodium, and 200° C. Techniques employed in making reductions in ball-mill and high-surface sodium reactors are given.

Twelve samples from six Barbour County coal beds were analyzed for this report. The samples collected were generally high sulfur content coals, frequently exceeding 3 percent in the raw-coal sample. Many of them could not be upgraded to acceptable metallurgical standards even by rigorous preparation procedures. The production of coal in the county in 1963 amounted to almost 3 million tons of which 44 percent was mechanically cleaned.

The thermodynamic properties of hedenbergite, of composition [(Ca0,9516) (Mg0,0583Fe2+0.7134 Fe3+0.0934 Mn0,1366) (Si206)], were experimentally determined at the Bureau of Mines. The standard enthalpy of formation determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry is AHf298 = -680.96±0.855 kcal/mol. The standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides is AR-96 = -24.55±0.485 kcal/mol. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 12.3 to 300.1 K. The derived standard entropy is S-98 - 41.218±0.148 cal/mol-K. High-temperature heat capacities were measured with a differential scanning calorim¬eter from 397 to 1,147 K. These experimentally determined data were combined with data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of measurements. Standard enthalpies of formation are given as a function of temperature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation at 298.15 K is AGf298 = -641.90±0.86 kcal/mol.

Experiments were made in a semicontinuous unit to provide engineering data for designing experimental continuous systems . These systems would be used to study the hydrogasification of hvab coal and char (from lowtemperature carbonization ) to high - Btu gas . In experiments at 800 ° C and with a coal residence time of several seconds , yields of hydrocarbon gases increased from about 2,000 scf / ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 7,000 scf at 1,000 psig . With 15 minutes residence time , yields increased from 8,000 scf/ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 17,500 cubic feet at 1,000 psig . In all cases , small quantities of heavy oils were produced along with the gaseous hydrocarbons . Production of oils could be minimized with a corresponding increase in gaseous hydrocarbons by increasing the retention time of the volatiles within the hot zone . Yields of gaseous hydrocarbons from char were slightly greater than from coal under similar conditions . Although the hydrogasification reaction is very pressure dependent , substantial quantities of coal (40 to 60 percent ) could be reacted to gaseous hydrocarbons at pressures as low as 50 psig provided reaction temperatures were increased to 1,200 ° C. It was also demonstrated that a hvab coal could be hydrogasified continuously without incurring agglomeration . This was achieved by dispersing coal in a relatively large reactor with concurrent flow of hydrogen . At 1,000 psig and 800 ° C , it was possible to react about 35 percent of the coal and to produce a gas containing up to 52 percent methane .

This report describes the preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Kanawha County , W. Va . It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke , either as mined or after beneficiation . Almost 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Kanawha County , W. Va . , in 1959 , of which about 67 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants . It has been estimated that more than 5,505 million tons remain in the county . Samples were collected from Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , Winifrede , Cedar Grove , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , Coalburg , Powellton , Eagle A , No. 2 Gas , and the Lower Kittanning beds . These beds were selected by the Bureau based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves . Float - and - sink tests of the samples collected from Eagle A , Peerless , Cedar Grove , Winifrede , and No. 2 Gas beds show that these coals at one location each are suitable for metallurgical use without washing . Lower Kittanning bed at four locations ; Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , and No. 2 Gas beds at two locations each ; and Coalburg , Powellton , Winifrede , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , and Cedar Grove beds at one location each can be upgraded to metallurgical quality by mechanical cleaning . Crushing the samples to 3/ 8- inch top size increased yields substantially at 1.30 specific gravity of Pittsburgh ( 17.5 percentage points ) and Upper Kittanning ( 13.0 percentage points ) beds and increased yield for the other beds sampled to a lesser amount . At this specific gravity , finer crushing caused In the 1.58 specific gravity float a general decrease in ash and sulfur . fractions of the other samples tested , most of the yields , and ash and sulfur contents , were lowered slightly by finer crushing .

The preparation characteristics of the coals of Buchanan County, Va., are described in this Bureau of Mines report. Twenty-one samples ,,,ere collected from 9 coalbeds in the county. Of these samples 13 were of metallurgical quality as received, and 8 required some upgrading to provide acceptable products. In general, the coals were of low to medium ash and sulfur content, and ranked as medium-to high-volatile bituminous. In 1963, production in the county was in excess of 13 million tons, of which 2.2 million tons were mechanically cleaned.

A degasification experiment was conducted in a Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed mine in Virginia. It involved (1) drilling holes in the coalbed in the out-side headings of a set of five being developed in virgin area, and (2) con-ducting a methane emission rate study as mining progressed and additional holes were drilled. Degasification from all drill holes except the longest in each of the outside headings and the first three drilled (excluding the in-situ pressure hole), was erratic and inconsequential in methane emission rates. The two longest holes liberated 66 and 79 cfm of methane, which is significant for the coalbed, but such quantity lasted a relatively short time; the first three were uniform but low in methane emission.

Published experimental coke data from a pilot plant slot-type oven were examined by statistical regression analysis. Quantitative relationships were found to exist between the coking rate, bulk density, and fine grinding of the coal, sole-oven expansion, volatile matter, moisture, ash, and carbon con-tent of the coal and coke parameters indicative of size and strength. Regression equations developed from coke data were shown to yield computed values that were in good agreement with experimental results for 11 coke properties. Prediction equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of data. Present results indicate that the variables cited undergo much interaction and the sum of these interactions determines coke size and strength.

Analytical studies of formation waters are widely used by the petroleum industry as an aid in solving problems such as identifying intrusive waters , corrosion studies , treating injection water , and choosing open or closed water- injection systems . The solution of a problem is often simplified when reliable analyses of the waters under consideration have been made previously . Chemical analyses and electrical resistivity measurements are presented on 267 samples from 74 fields in south Arkansas , and 199 samples from 80 fields in north Louisiana .
