Many types of heavy equipment used in the mining and construction industries use enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators from dust and noise exposure. Normally, when the equip- [ ] ment is new, manufacturers' deigned controls are effective at keeping the operator's exposure at acceptable level. However, as equipment becomes older and many components of the enclosure deteriorate, such as gaskets and seals, the effectiveness of the enclosed cab can be greatly reduced. This can cause excessive and dangerous exposures to respirable dust, especially when the ore or overburden contains crystalline silica.

Mineral resources in the Silver Creek study area of the Nez Perce National Forest. Idaho, were investigated during the summer Of 1989. The study area includes the 36,100-acre Silver Creek-Pilot Knob RARE II area (No. 1-849) on the north side of the South Fork Clearwater River, about 11 miles west of Elk City, 10. Mines in and near the study area in the Tenmile and Newsome mining districts produced about 100.000 02 of gold, mostly from placers. Gold production had an historic value estimated at 52 million, equivalent to nearly $40 million at today's prices. Lode mines produced about 19,000 oz of gold, along with smaller amounts of silver, copper, lead, and zinc. Of 34 mines and prospects examined, ten lode properties are considered to be significant by virtue of their past development or production and the presence of possibly ore-grade mineralization. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area; however, samples that contained gold and anomalous arsenic delineate a three-mile-long area from the Sentinel mine, north to the Blue Quartz prospect where exploration might disclose resources. One mining company is conducting geophysical studies and drilling within the delineated area. In addition, six placer sites may contain enough gold to be of possible interest for future exploration and development.

Preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines were conducted to determine the feasibility of a multiple-compartment, ion-exchange (MCIX) column simulator for examining the effect of multiple-orifice plates in the column. A rectangular, five-orifice, three-compartment, MCIX simulator with a cross-sectional plate area of 0.66 ft2 was used for the investigation. Orifices with open areas of 1, 3, and 5 percent were used with various operating conditions. The study was separated into three separate sections: (1) solution flow effect, (2) fluidization effect, and (3) resin transfer effect. The solution flow and fluidization studies showed that for solution flow rates of about 3 gpm/ft2, a I-percent open area plate functioned best, while at solution flow rates of 9 and 15 gpm/ft2, the best open areas were 3 and 5 percent, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines air-sealed a 77-acre) above-drainage coal mine to evaluate sealing as a means of reducing the acid and metallic salt contents in drainage from abandoned mines. An approximate reduction in acidity of 150 ppm (equivalent to 193 pounds per day) and in iron of 98 ppm were directly attributed to sealing. The topographical, hydrological, and other factors involved in air-sealing are discussed, and the construction used to seal the mine is described.

The Bureau of Mines has completed an underground degasification project in which an underground piping system was used to transport methane from the coalbed to the surface. In a 10-month period four horizontal holes were drilled to an average depth of 1,450 feet. All four holes were surveyed vertically and azimuthally. In 991 days of degasification, 255 MMcf of gas was drained from the coalbed. The underground piping system proved to be a safe and effective means of transporting methane from the coalbed to the surface.

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 2 of the Marquette Range, Michigan is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim; districts of the United States. The publication, of this information should be of interest to the industry at large and the exchange of ideas thereby made possible should be of economic value to operators in all harts of the country. From the National institute for Occupational Safety and Health Disasters take many forms and demand quick response from emergency workers. They may include natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes, or they may involve manmade disasters such as technological failures or terrorist attacks. As a member of an emergency response team, you and your team members are at risk of experiencing what psychologists refer to as a traumatic incident—an incident that may Involve exposure to catastrophic events, severely injured children or adults, dead bodies or body parts, or the loss of colleagues, for instance. Traumatic incidents can produce unusually strong emotional reactions that may interfere with your ability to function at the scene or later: You may experience any of the physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral symptoms listed below in Table 1. Some people experience emotional aftershocks weeks or months after they have passed through a traumatic event. Others may experience these reactions while still at the scene, where they must stay clearly focused on constantly changing hazards to maintain their own safety and to rescue injured victims.

During the time period from 1990-2007, there were 1601 reportable fires that occurred in the U.S. mining industry (an average of 89 fires per year). The leading causes of U.S. mine fires include flame cutting and welding operations, frictional heating and ignitions, electrical shorts, mobile equipment malfunctions, and spontaneous combustion. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a program of research addressing metal/nonmetal and coal mine fire prevention, detection, management and suppression. In the metal/nonmetal area, work was focused on technology transfer and training, and research to reduce the number of mobile equipment fires and their hazards. In the coal arena, research is underway to determine the root cause of cutting and welding-related fires and to evaluate the effects of ventilation schemes relative to the spontaneous combustion risk in longwall mines. Relative to fire management, research is ongoing on remote mine seal installation and remote mine fire suppression technologies. Finally, research is continuing to develop comprehensive and usable smoke management techniques and to develop mine fire growth models, propagation, and suppression. This paper presents a summary of some of the mine fire research and provides an overview of the next phase of the NIOSH mine fire research program.

A process is being developed by the Bureau of Mines to selectively recover nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic laterites. In laboratory evaluation of the process, the oxides in the laterite were selectively reduced with carbon monoxide at temperatures from 350° to 600° C. For material containing more than about 5 percent magnesia, pyrite additions or post-reduction heat treatments were necessary to achieve satisfactory nickel and cobalt extraction for this range of reduction temperatures. Multistage leaching of the reduced material at ambient temperature and pressure in the presence of oxygen, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium hydroxide extracted up to about 90 and 85 percent of the contained nickel and cobalt, respectively. The nickel was selectively recovered from the leach solution by solvent extraction and was then stripped from the loaded organic with dilute sulfuric acid to provide a nickel-rich electrolyte. Treatment of the raffinate with hydrogen sulfide resulted in the recovery of cobalt as a sulfide. The only contaminant in solution was magnesium which was removed by ion exchange or precipitation. In this process the energy requirements are relatively low and except for minor operation losses, only coke and oxygen are consumed.

The enormous deposits of greensand in New Jersey and elsewhere in the United States, many of them close to important octant industrial centers, constitute a perpetual challenge for research chemists to convert them into a commercial asset of national importance. Following the introduction of more concentrated fertilizers, comprising synthetic mixtures of more soluble salts, the quantity of greensand used directly upon the soil has diminished, but deposits of such material still have at least potential value locally for use not only as fertilizer but also as a water softener. An annotated bibliography of the already extensive Literature on greensand, virtually complete to about the end of 1929, has been issued by the Bureau of Mines3/, and the commercial aspects as well as the technology of greensand utilization are discussed in available publications, The purpose of the present circular, therefore, is merely to provide a brief outline of certain general essential considerations for use in appraising the potential value of a greensand deposit in any given locality.

Reference mass spectra and analytical correlations for 20 alkylcycloalkyl sulfides and two dicycloalkyl sulfides are presented 'to provide information that will facilitate the identification of sulfur compounds occurring in natural or synthetic mixtures. Reference spectra indicate relative intensities in addition to parent and base peak sensitivities. Analytical correlations establish the ionic species that reflect major fragmentation paths for the com-pounds studied. Specifically, the correlations show that base peaks are formed by several different processes: (1) Cleavage of the bond a to the ring, (2) fragmentation of the alkyl chain, and (3) fragmentation of the ring plus fragment contribution from the alkyl chain. Useful correlations for deter-mining alkyl chain length involve the CnH2+3S+ and CnH2n+1 + ions. CnH2n-2+ and CnH2n-1 S+ ions reveal the number of carbon atoms in the cyclic ring. Other important ionic species are also discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the oxidation of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Type 304 stainless steel (SS) during annealing in simulated combustion products from several air-CH4 fuel ratios. Atmospheres representing air-CH4 ratios of 14:1 and 18:1 contained free 02, while atmospheres representing 10:1 air-CH, ratio did not. A Cr203 layer formed on SS samples annealed in atmospheres containing free 0, while a Cr-Fe spinel layer formed in atmospheres with no free 02. The Cr203 layer was adherent and presented a protective barrier to metal diffusion, effectively limiting oxidation of the metal substrate. The Cr-Fe spinel was not protective and allowed the diffusion of Fe through the spinel to the gas-oxide interface where it was oxidized to magnetite, which spalled from the surface. This resulted in thick scale layers on samples annealed in atmospheres containing no free 02, as compared to layers formed on samples annealed in atmospheres containing free 02. These results confirmed and explained industrial operators' observations that thick, smoky (fine spalled magnetite) scales form on SS annealed in low free-02 atmospheres, while thin protective oxide layers form on sheets in atmospheres containing free 02.

In April 1932, the Bureau of Mines published Information Circular 6595, entitled "Data in Reference to Installation of Cables in Shafts and Boreholes", in which were described methods followed in various sections of the United States when electrical circuits are taken into mines by means of cables suspended in shafts and boreholes. In view of the present tendency to extend high-tension cables along entries and passageways from the bottom of the shaft, borehole, or other point of entrance to coal mines rather than over the surface, it is deemed that the various methods of installing such cables deserve careful consideration, particularly in mines in which gas and coal dust contribute to explosion hazards. This is especially true of localities where there is an inclination to restrict the extension of 2,300- and 4,000-volt circuits into the mines. Probably it is feared that accidental contact with the cables of such circuits may result in more serious shock than with lower voltages; also, it is possible that new circuits are regarded merely as explosion hazards additional to those already existing, regardless of the manner in which the new circuits may be installed. It is the firm belief of some engineers that the circuits can be installed so that they will not be damaged by wrecks or roof falls, thereby eliminating the hazard of explosion from this source while at the same time making the chance of accidental contact remote if not impossible. Moreover, some believe that fire hazards from direct-current systems can be reduced by keeping motor-generator sets close to load centers. Thus, although the alternating-current circuits would be lengthened, the size and extent of direct-current circuits would be kept to a minimum.

Continuous remote sensing of methane concentration in underground mines. Approach A methane transducer, developed as a fixed point rib-or face-mounted operating device, measures ambient levels of methane and produces a signal that is proportional to the measured concentration. How It Works The methane transducer, developed under contract for the Bureau of Mines, uses a catalytic-type sensor which will detect methane concentration. The transducer is mounted vertically, as shown. This type of mounting minimizes dust accumulation on the sensing element, which might cause degraded operation. The unit must not be located in an area where water can continuously drip or run on It. The transducer generates an electrical signal proportional to methane concentration at the sensor. A sensor failure output indicates the status of the sensing element A circuit within the methane transducer detects whether the sensing element is shorted or open. A high signal (approximately 8 Vdc) on the failure output Indicates the sensor element is operating In Its normal range. A low output (less than 1 Vdc) indicates an element fault. Research conducted by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of preparing columbium and tantalum metals by the application of Kroll-process techniques. Yields in excess of 95 percent were obtained in a modified Kroll-process reduction apparatus constructed from nickel and Inconel.4 Operating conditions during reduction and distillation were determined. Optimum temperatures during sodium reductions ranged from 650° to 750° C and for magnesium from 700° to 800° C with retort pressures ranging from 3 to 7 psig. Undesirable vapor phase reactions occurred when temperatures exceeded 750° C during sodium reductions or 850° C with magnesium. Vacuum distillation at 850° C effectively removed volatile salts and excess reductant from the reduced metals. Calculations based on the results obtained in small scale tests indicate that reaction rates of up to 34 lb/hr could be obtained during columbium reductions and up to 60 lb/hr during tantalum reductions in production scale reac¬tors. The small, laboratory-scale techniques used in this study could be adapted to commercial practice. The reduced powder or sponge metals can be consolidated by conventional arc-melting techniques, and the arc-melted metals can be fabricated into ductile sheet at room temperature. Analyses of arc-melted buttons prepared from Kroll-process tantalum or columbium showed that tantalum of greater than 99.8-percent purity was obtained and that columbium purity exceeded 99.7 percent. A significant purification of the reduced metals occurred when they were consolidated by electron-beam melting, and the purity and ductility of electron-beam-melted Kroll-process tantalum and columbium compared favorably with the commercial metals. After electron-beam melting, the purity of the tantalum exceeded 99.95 percent, and columbium purity was approximately 99.9 percent.

One of the primary objectives of the Bureau of Mines solid waste utilization program is the recycling of the magnetic fraction of municipal solid waste called raw refuse scrap. In this investigation, several types of scrap of differing quality, including refuse and turnings, were melted in a 1-ton electric-arc furnace in various combinations to produce steel in noncritical (construction) grades. In-formation on furnace operation and on the behavior of tramp and alloying elements was obtained. The research showed that it is possible to produce acceptable steel from a variety of steel scrap. Although some scrap is routinely used in steelmaking, it was found that up to 50 to 55 pct of the scrap charge can be ref-use, provided it is combined with higher quality scrap. The chemistry of the steels was generally acceptable, and all of them were rolled without difficulty. The specification (ASTM 615) for the steels produced was grade 40 or grade 60, containing 0.30 or 0.40 pct C, with mini-mum yield strengths of 40,000 or 60,000-psi, respectively. Most of the steels met the specification requirements. In-formation on typical microstructures of some of the steels is included. The composition of some furnace dusts showed high levels of Sn, Pb, and Zn.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. RESEARCH SUMMARY: The results of previous NIOSH research show that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and gender. Using hearing thresholds at 4,000 Hz as an indicator, coal miners experience hearing loss 2.5 to 3 times greater than would be expected for persons not exposed to occupational noise. At age 50, 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners were found to have a hearing impairment. In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50.
