The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. Development of downstream petrochemical and fertilizer industries continues as a major investment area. In 1993, the 15 countries that constituted the region accounted for 29 % of world crude petroleum output, 19 % of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 6 % of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. Regional output was up for most major mineral commodities. A major exception was phosphate rock, which declined sharply owing to reduced worldwide demand. Total crude petroleum output declined by over 100 Mbbls, again owing to slack demand in the major industrial countries.

The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace was blown with oxygen-enriched blast in combination with natural gas injected at the tuyeres. The air blast was augmented with oxygen to form an enriched blast containing 24,8 pct oxygen, and tests were run at natural gas injection rates of 4.5, 6.0, and 8.3 pct of the air blast. Similar enrichment to 26.8 pct oxygen was tested at natural gas rates of 7.2, 9.1, and 11,0 pct of the air blast. At intermediate proportions of natural gas to oxygen, (1) the fuel rate and the replacement ratio of coke by natural gas were unaffected by oxygen injections and (2) the productivity increased about 4 pct for each I pct oxygen added to the blast. The higher proportions of natural gas to oxygen were less efficient; in return for a lower coke rate, the fuel rate increased and productivity declined. A deficiency in reducing gas imposed a limit upon lower than normal proportions of natural gas to oxygen. Beyond this limit the formation of reducing gas was insufficient to support the rate of metal production. When this condition was encountered, the coke rate requirement for specification iron was abnormally high and production fell off badly. Adiabatic flame temperature is discussed as a means for proportioning oxygen and natural gas additions.

During the World War Leadville was an important producer of manganese and maganiferous ores for then steel industry. Normally, the market for these ores is limited to the requirements of the local steel mill at Pueblo for low-grade ores used in making, basic pig iron containing 1 to 2 percent Mr and spiegoloison containing 20 percent Mn, but during the war and a brief period of postwar readjustment, a good deal of 25- to 40-percent manganese ore qua shipped to in-stern steel-manufacturing centers. Throughout the active life of the camp, manganiferous iron ore carrying a little silver and lead and sometimes as such as 35 percent Mn was chipped to load smelters for flux. The total reordered production is 936,024 tons of metallurgical ore shinned to steel mills and 2,576,514 tons of fluxing ore, much of it of metallurgical grade.

The Melrose zinc-lead. deposit is in an area of structural disturbance of sedimentary rocks in the Melrose mining district in Cherokee County, Kans., 25 miles west of Joplin, Mo., adjacent to the northwest limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling in the Melrose district has been sporadic and. very limited, largely due to the high cost of exploration through great thicknesses of barren rock, 350 to 440 feet overlying the ore deposits. No mining has ever been done on the Melrose zinc-lead tract, but it has been drilled extensively. The drill-hole logy indicate extensive structural deformation, silicification, and zinc-lead deposits in the Boone limestone-chert formations of the Mississippian series, which is overlain by thick-bedded Pennsylvanian shale and sandstone. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate the ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with no evident oxidation. During the period from November 2, 1949, to March 13, 1950, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 23 holes aggregating 10,405 feet of bore. Factual data on the investigation and logs of holes drilled by private parties and the Bureau of Mines are presented in this report.

The Petrographic Section of the Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., annually examines thousands of minerals and rocks. Samples are received from mining, engineers, prospectors, and government agencies, both State and Federal. During the past 2 years certain uncommon minerals have been identified in the samples submitted. Eleven occurrences have been selected for reporting in detail. These selections were made because in most cases a new locality is involved. The data reported are the result of application of the latest techniques, and widely disseminated references concerning each mineral have been added for completeness. Several occurrences have been described by other investigators; in those cases new data have been supplied to supplement the already published information on these occurrences. No uranium-bearing minerals have been included; they will be treated in another paper. The Bureau of Mines does not make chemical analyses or assays for individuals or firms In direct competition with private laboratories. Mineral¬ogical examinations, however, are made for prospectors and the general public. Such examinations a call surface to determine whether the sample in question has possible commercial value. If it has apparent value, the sender is so informed, and suggestions as to its .Arc, development and marketing are offered. The latest scientific apparatus is available to aid in identification. The apparatus includes microscopes, both wide-field and polarizing, a Bunsen-type spectroscope for visual observation of the Zinc and band spectra of many elements, differential thermal apparatus for the examination of hydrous material, apparatus for cutting and mounting either thin sections for study in transmitted or polished surfaces for reflected-light studies, and a high-intensity magnetic separator for concentrating minerals according to their magnetic susceptibility. Also, available, but not an integral part of the Section, are several laboratory-type Geiger counters, a grating spectrograph, and X-ray diffraction apparatus. If need be, all of these tools may be employed to identify a mineral or rock.

To determine purities of purified samples, new techniques for analyzing spectral data were developed.

A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

"INTRODUCTION The use of sheaths or hollow cylinders of flame-extinctive materials surrounding cartridges of permissible explosives has been developed during the last few years; the history of sheathed explosives in their salient development in Belgium was treated recently in a publication of the Bureau of Mines. 6/ This development is of great interest in explosives technology, for it holds possibilities of reducing further the ignition hazards that may cause many coal-mine disasters. The township interest in sheathed explosives in this country is attested by the passage of some State laws permitting the use of such explosives on shift 7/; inquiries are received in increasing numbers concerning the effects of sheaths on practical hazards as well as the general technology underlying their use."

"INTRODUCTION Bauxite, in Appalachian Alabama, occurs in the Rock Run and Goshen Valley districts in Cherokee County; in Nences Creek Valley near Jacksonville; near Anniston in Calhoun County; north of Fort Payne in DeKalb County; near Ashville in St. Clair County; and near Talladega in Talladega County.In February 1942, Preston E. Cloud, Jr., assistant geologist, Federal Geological Survey, began a study of these bauxite deposits and the geology relating thereto.The Bureau of Mines established field headquarters at Piedmont, Calhoun County, in July 1942. Mineral agreements covering a total of 11,097 acres were executed with 15 landowners in the Rock Run district; 38 in the Goshen Valley district, covering 7,575.5 acres; and 3 in the Nances Creek Valley district, covering 988.5 acres. Drilling was done on.the properties of 9 land¬owners in the Rock Run district, and on the property of 1 landowner each in the Goshen Valley and the Nances Creek districts. Drilling began October 26, 1942, and ceased on May 17, 1943.Power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes in shallow deposits and sampled .old shafts, mines, and mine dumps.In all, 222 holes for a total of 13,250 feet were drilled. Of these toles, 88 penetrated bauxite but too low in grade to constitute ore."

The lignite deposits of the United States represent a huge potential source of fuel for power generation. It has been estimated that lignite constitutes about 24 percent of the remaining National reserves of solid fuel on a tonnage basis and about 15 percent of the reserves on a B.t.u. basis. (See sec. 3, part 1.) The major portion of these reserves is in North Dakota. Lignite has been used locally for domestic heating since the first settlers burned it at forts and fur-trading posts as early as 1855. Some of the first studies of the use of lignite in steam boilers were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1920 (15, 19) 1/ However, the commercial utilization of lignite as fuel for producing power developed slowly. Not until about 1925 was any really successful lignite industrial fuel-blaming equipment developed. Since then the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for producing power has been increasing steadily.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the cost-effectiveness of dust control used on unpaved mine haul roads. Field testing was conducted at three surface coal mines (two in Wyoming, one in southern Illinois) for a total of 20 weeks. The highest control efficiency measured for a chemical dust suppressant, 82 percent, was for calcium chloride two weeks after application. Generally, however, the control efficiencies hovered in the 40 to 60 per-cent range over the first two weeks since application, and then decreased with time. After the fifth week, the limited number of data points suggest a control efficiency of less than 20 percent. Composite watering data were fairly uniform. Watering once per hour resulted in a TSP control efficiency of approximately 40 percent. Doubling that application rate increased the control effectiveness by about 15 percent to 55 percent. Chemical dust suppressants (primarily salts and lignons) can be shown to be more cost-effective than watering under some conditions. The Bureau of Mines surveyed a variety of inorganic ion-exchange materials to determine their suitability for removing valuable accessory elements and troublesome contaminants from metallurgical process and waste streams. Most of the materials, which included molecular sieves, heteropolyacid salts, and hydrous metal oxides, did not give adequate separations, did not have the necessary stability in strong acids or bases, or were not in a physical form suitable for ion-exchange use. Many of the suitable inorganic materials, especially the hydrous oxides, were capable of cation exchange with high capacity only in basic conditions, which caused hydrolysis of most of the cations tested. Multivalent anions, such as arsenate and phosphate, were easily removed from acidic solutions by hydrous oxides. Hydrous zirconia was the best material for this purpose. Multivalent anions were not easily des orbed because of compound formation; therefore, conventional ion-exchange techniques could not be employed. As an alternative approach, hydrous ferric hydroxide was used as a filter material to remove arsenate and phosphate from acid solutions. One gram of arsenic was removed from solution for each 20 g of ferric hydroxide. Ferric hydroxide is preferable to hydrous zirconia for use as a filter material because of low cost.

"The demand for barite has increased greatly in the last 10 years, especially during World War II. Depletion of oil reserves and subsequent increase in deep drilling created a heavy demand by the oil industry for barite to be used as drilling mud. The great increase in demand for barite gave impetus to the development of a, deposit of impure barite near, Magnet Cove in Hot Spring County, Ark.The critical condition of the national barite supply early in 1944 led the War Production Board to recommend that the Bureau of Mines attempt to prove the existence of a large reserve tonnage of barite in the Magnet Cove area and arch for new deposits. To carry out this program, the Bureau explored on newly reported. Barite deposits in southern Montgomery County, Ark. The Gap Mountain, Fancy Hill, and Sulphur Mountain barite deposits were investigated. Eight diamond core-drill holes and 1,336 linear feet of surface trenching were completed, and barite samples obtained were analyzed, A study of the Montgomery County barnse district indicates that the lenticular bodies of barite replace a favorable host rock near the base of the Stanley shale formation. Barite is exposed along the side of anticlinal mountains where erosion has truncated the beds on the limbs of the associated synclines. An appreciable amount of barite suitable for commercial use has been indicated by trenching and core drilling. The Gap Mountain and Fancy Hill deposits are controlled by the Magnet Cove Barium Corp. and Baroid Sales Division of National Load Co., respectively. The ore is similar to that of the Magnet Cove area and is amenable to concentration by a flotation process. Mining of these deposits had not been begun by the time the Bureau completed its exploration project."

A method is being developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for recovering lead metal from galena without the generation of SO2. Lead chloride is obtained by leaching lead concentrate at a temperature of approximately 100° C with FeCl3 solution: PbS + 2FeCl. " PbC1 2 + 2FeC1 2 + S. Electrolysis of the PbCI 2 product in a fused-salt bath results in deposition of molten lead metal at the cathode and evolution of chlorine at the anode. The chlorine can then be absorbed in the spent leach solution to regenerate FeCl3 for recycling. Optimum electrolyte composition was a PbC12-LiCl eutectic containing 7.6 wt-pct LiCl. The PbCl2-NaCl eutectic also proved satisfactory. Electrolysis in the PbCl2-LiCl bath at 450° C yielded 99 pct current efficiency at a current density of 5 amp/in2 with an energy requirement of only 0.24 kW-hr/lb metal produced. This compares with 98 pct current effi¬ciency and 0.26 kW-hr/lb metal produced for the PbCI2-NaCI bath. A typical lead deposit contained less than 100 ppm total detectable metallic impurities. At the low temperature employed for electrolysis, there was essentially no vaporization of Pb or FbC12.

As part of the Phase I study activity, a questionnaire was sent to a representative sampling of mining companies to obtain information on the uses, use conditions, personnel policies and other user concerns associated with front-end loaders. On-site visits to several of the mining companies were also parried out and the questionnaire was used during these visits as well. Five major areas were dealt with in the user questionnaire. These included: 1) Front-End Loader Critique - An open-ended form was employed to permit the mining companies to describe the particular things they liked and disliked about front-end loaders, in general, and/ or specific models in particular. 2) Usage - A form indicating the functions performed by front-end loaders and the numbers, makes and models of front-end loaders being used by mining companies. 3) Environment - A form where the user indicated the various types of conditions encountered in their use of front-end loaders. 4) Personnel - A form for describing factors pertaining to the qualifications of front-end loader operators. 5) Miscellaneous and Comments - A form permitting the user to comment on his feelings toward standardization of front-end loader operator stations.

This report describes work carried out by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the General Services Administration (GSA). Tests on nickel oxide reduction were conducted at the Pyrometallurgical Laboratory at Pitts-burgh and Bruceton, Pa., and at a rented plant at Canonsburg, Pa. Nickel oxide was reduced to sponge nickel, which was then melted to produce specification-grade nickel ingots containing a minimum of 98.50 percent nickel plus cobalt and a maximum of 1.00 percent cobalt. One purpose of this study was to determine if specification-grade nickel could be made from nickel oxide produced at the United States-Government-owned plant at Nicaro, Cuba, in pilot-plant scale operations involving direct reduction and melting processes. A second and equally important purpose was to obtain cost data on the pilot-plant operation to estimate the cost of producing ingot nickel at an annual rate of 12 million pounds. Laboratory tests verified that nickel oxide, in saggers and in the presence of anthracite fines and dolomite in the ratio of approximately 20:5:1, could be converted to sponge nickel when heated to approximately 1,900° F. for about 2 to 4 hours, depending on the size and density of the oxide charge. The tests also determined the type of saggers suitable for pilot-plant operations.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health method 7703 is a portable field procedure for the analysis of workplace air filter samples for hexavalent chromium (CrVI) content immediately after the samples are collected. The field method prescribes CrVI extraction from air filter samples with an ammonium sulfate/ammonium hydroxide extraction buffer using ultrasonic extraction (UE). Strong anion-exchange solidphase extraction (SAE-SPE) is then used to separate CrVI from trivalent chromium and other interferences. Portable spectrophotometric measurement of CrVI is then conducted using the 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) method. However, it has been found that the ammonium extraction buffer does not dequately bring insoluble CrVI compounds into solution during the UE process. Thus, it was deemed necessary to modify the field method so that it would provide acceptable recoveries for insoluble CrVI compounds. To this end, a more alkaline extraction solution—sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate buffer—was investigated. The modified procedure using the highly alkaline extraction solution was demonstrated to be compatible with SAE-SPE cartridges when determining insoluble CrVI in air filter samples. It was found that the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer was equally effective for complete dissolution of both insoluble and soluble forms of CrVI. Furthermore, the modified procedure met desired performance criteria established for air sampling and analytical methods. Kroemer(1-3) and Kroemer et al.(4) define the isoinertial technique of strength assessment as one in which mass properties of an object are held constant, as in lifting a given weight over a predetermined distance. Several strength assessment procedures possess this characteristic. Most commonly associated with the term is a specific test developed to provide a relatively quick assessment of a subject's maximal lifting capacity using a modified weight-lifting device.(1,5) The classic psychophysical methodology of assessing maximum acceptable weights of lift is also considered an isoinertial technique under this definition.(6) While the definition provided by Kroemer(1) and Kroemer et al.(4) has been most widely accepted in the literature, some have applied the term "isoinertial" to techniques that differ somewhat from the preceding definition, such as in a description of the Isotechnologies B-200 strength testing device.(7) Rather than lifting a constant mass the B-200 applies a constant force against which the subject performs an exertion. The isoinertial tests described here apply to situations in which the mass to be moved by a musculoskeletal effort is set to a constant. Is Isoinertial Testing Psychophysical or Is Psychophysical Testing Isoinertial? As various types of strength tests have evolved over the past few decades, some unfortunate developments in terminology have arisen to describe and classify different strength assessment procedures. This is particularly evident in sorting out various tests that have been labeled "isoinertial." One example was cited earlier. Another problem that has evolved is that the term "isoinertial strength" has two connotations. The first is the conceptual definition: isoinertial strength tests include any strength test in which a constant mass is handled. In practice, however, the term is often used to denote a specific strength test in which subjects' maximal lifting capacity is determined using a machine and a constant mass is lifted.(1,5) Partially as a result of this dual connotation, the literature contains references to both "isoinertial strength test" as a psychophysical variant(8) and the psychophysical method as an "isoinertial strength test" (4,9) To lay the framework for the next two chapters, the authors will briefly discuss some operational definitions of tests of isoinertial and psychophysical strength. In stating that the isoinertial strength test is a variant of the psychophysical method, Ayoub and Mital(8) refer to the specific strength test developed by Kroemer(1) and McDaniel et al.(5) Clearly, this isoinertial protocol has many similarities to the psychophysical method: both are dynamic; weight is adjusted in both; and both measure the load a subject is willing to endure under specified circumstances. However, while both deal with lifting and adjusting loads, there are significant differences between the psychophysical (isoinertial) technique and the Kroemer-McDaniel (isoinertial) protocol in their procedures and the use of the data collected in these tests. The Bureau of Mines developed and tested in the laboratory several innovative techniques for reclaiming used lubricating oil. These processes included percolation through both chemically treated clay and ion-exchange resins, distillation through batch and continuous wiped-wall vacuum apparatus, treatment with solvent extraction systems, and chemical removal of impurities with chelating agents. In each treatment, the criteria of evaluation was oil recovery and reduction of acidic and metallic components. Both vacuum distillation and solvent treatment ranked high in their abilities to remove acidic and metallic components of the used oil with good oil recoveries. A combination of the two techniques gave the best overall results in terms of quality evaluations made by established bench tests. The methods were not ranked according to economic practicablity.
