The use of explosives in underground coal mines presents a potential risk for serious injuries and death to miners. Widespread disasters have occurred from the explosion of methane and/or coal dust initiated by blasting with explosives. Many of these disasters took place in the early 1900's when the use of black powder for blasting was prevalent. Historically, the investigations in the U.S.A. to develop and test safer explosives for blasting coal began in 1908 when a testing station was established in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since that time, great strides have been taken in the development of safer explosives. The use of safer explosives has significantly reduced blasting accidents in coal mines. Enactment of legislation, such as the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and enforcement of regulations has also improved blasting safety. More recently, MSHA began a major revision of its regulations for blasting in coal mines. In 1988, MSHA published final rules for the approval and use of permissible explosives in coal mines. The approval requirements for explosives address testing and evaluation. The requirements include tests for sheathed explosives which represent a new technology. The use regulations provide increased safety protection for miners by including standards to address identified hazards. Major aspects of these standards, such as qualifications for blasters, multiple-shot blasting and the use of sheathed explosives are discussed.

In Stockholm a new road traffic system called Södra Länken (Southern Link) will be in operation in late 2004. The total length of the road system is 6 kilometres of which 4,5 kilometres run through tunnels under suburbs immediately south of Stockholm inner City. The new traffic tunnels together with existing Metro tunnels, which mostly are in rock, will be the determining factor for blast design for many projects in the future. To set reasonable and safe permitted vibration levels the Swedish National Road Administration, Stockholm Region and Stockholm Transport Rail System have together financed a project to determine guide levels for blast-induced vibrations in traffic tunnels in rock. The purpose of the project has been to establish guide levels that are appropriate for different types of rock tunnels.

The potential of hydrogen peroxide explosives was introduced to Thomas Gustavsson and Robert Håkland by Dr Miguel Araos through his development of hydrogen peroxide gel compositions (HPG). In 2020, Thomas and Robert developed a concept project with Boliden Minerals and received Swedish government funding to evaluate HPG technology in a mine environment. The project showed HPG reacted violently with mine mineralization and concluded that HPGs did not offer a commercial solution due to safety concerns. Thomas and Robert engaged with Stefan Nilsson to develop hydrogen peroxide emulsion (HPE) compositions and the process techniques to manufacture them. In 2021, laboratory work produced a promising low carbon intensity, nitrate free, ammonia free, emulsion formulation based on industrial grade hydrogen peroxide and a fuel-emulsifier phase. Design and construction of an HPE pilot plant and underground charging unit commenced. The manufacture of hydrogen peroxide emulsion shares several similarities with the production of nitrate-based emulsions in that the plant is a facility to blend a strong oxidizer solution with a liquid fuel phase into a finished emulsion. A key differentiator between HPE and nitrate-based emulsion is that the manufacture of HPE is a cold production technology in that neither the oxidizer phase (HP) nor the fuel-emulsifier phase requires high temperature heating to prepare raw materials. A successful proof-of-concept HPE evaluation ran from April 2022 to October 2022 at Boliden’s Kankberg underground mine in Sweden. This evaluation demonstrated HPE technology's safety, performance, production, handling, and indicative environmental benefits.

As part of the redevelopment of the Royal Brisbane Hospital complex in Australia, a number of antiquated buildings were to be demolished and replaced by newer, modem facilities. Aside from the decommissioning of the hospital buildings, the project called for the removal of approximateIy 24,000 bank cubic metres (bcm) of varying quality rock material. Given the sensitivity of the project, in particular the close proximity of the required excavation to the existing hospital structures (-3 metres at the closest point), and the requirement that these were to remain lily operational during the construction phase, it was initially proposed to use hydraulic rock hammers as the primary means of excavation. Poor production rates and unexpected dif3icuIt rock conditions led to a revision of the excavation methods and a feasibility study on drill and blast practices was undertaken. Subsequent to an initial series of trial blasts to illustrate that vibration and flyrock could be adequately controlled, drill and blast methods were used in conjunction with mechanical methods of rock breakage. This paper reviews the drU and blast processes and the practices which were necessary to comply with the multiple constraints imposed on the project. The project has highlighted that modified drill and blast practices remain a cost-effective method of excavation, even in sensitive areas which are commonly deemed inappropriate for such methods.

One of the most common assumptions regarding the use of ANFO versus utilizing 100% sensitized emulsion is that ANFO “turns over” the muck-pile better, due to the “higher gas volume” supposedly inherent in ANFO. This paper examines this assumption and provides quantitative data for analysis. Total gas volume from each product was evaluated using Orica’s I.D.E.X. Code analysis. This analysis was used to determine if gas volume is a significant contributor to differences in fragmentation and movement between blasts utilizing the two different products. A constant drilling and blasting cost per yard for given cut depth, hole diameter, stemming height and rock type was utilized. The cost per yard was held constant by adjusting patterns considering product, accessory, and drilling costs. Photographic fragmentation analysis, dig rates measured quantitatively through production tracking and time studies and qualitative information about the diggability of the blast provided through video recordings were used to evaluate performance. The data collected during the study is presented and recommendations are made regarding the performance of ANFO and Emulsion holding other variables constant for a limited number of blasts.

Emulsions have been developed for over forty years to become the most common water-resistant explosives used in the mining industry. An emulsion is a common commodity, with many examples in our day to day lives of one immiscible liquid dispersed in another. They have varying degrees of stability from a few seconds to years. What makes their application in explosives unique is twofold. They contain a high concentration of salts in the dispersed phase and also have a far larger volume of dispersed phase than continuous phase. The continuous phase contains at least 75% by weight of an oxidizer such as ammonium nitrate dissolved in water. The crystallization point of these solutions is often >60oC which means that the formation of the emulsion has to occur at an elevated temperature. Once the emulsion is cooled, its structure helps to prevent the formation of crystals in an otherwise unstable system. At room temperature there is a considerable potential for the small oxidizer droplets to crystallize which is countered by the strength of the oil layer and also the size of the emulsion droplet. If the emulsion droplet is too large then crystals can form which may lead to rapid deterioration of the emulsion and overall crystallization, accompanied by a temperature rise as the heat of crystallization is released from the emulsion. The size of the emulsion droplet is critical in preventing crystal growth and subsequent droplet coalescence and emulsion break down. One method of examining emulsions and understanding their structure is to use optical microscopy to measure droplet size and also emulsion deterioration from shearing, temperature cycling and when contaminants are introduced, such as detergents, different oil types, coating agents and dust particles. A European Directive on Identification & Traceability of explosives came into effect on the 4th of April 2008. This directive is intended to establish a harmonised system for the unique identification and traceability of all packaged explosives, detonators, reels of detonating cord and primers used in civil applications across the European Union. The directive must be adopted into the national legislation of each European Union member state by the 5th of April 2009 with compliance achieved throughout Europe by the 5th of April 2012. The requirements of the Directive apply to all explosives manufactured, used and imported into the European Union from 5th April 2012.

Since the establishment of the CANMET Experimental Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec in 1991, research activities in rock fragmentation have been carried out not only in the underground laboratory but also in production mines in the north-west Quebec region. Among the instruments available for rock fragmentation, the Kodak EktaPro 1000 Motion Analyzer (also called the high speed video system) has been one of the most useful tools for monitoring blasts in both underground and open pit. This system is capable of recording events at rates from 50 to 12,000 frames per second (fps). The buffer memory has a capacity of storing 2050 images. To use this system in the underground, a steel box was made with a bullet-proof glass in the front to protect the camera. The processing and recording equipment are placed in an aluminum case which can be located about 30 m away from the camera via an extension cable. For each blast monitored, high frequency geophones and accelerometers were used to monitor ground vibrations and give a timing reference of the explosive detonations to correlate with the observation of the captured images.

Most of the current explosives for mining blasting activities rely on voids to become sensitive to initiation, then detonating and finally, sustaining that detonation. The use of voids is known as hot spot sensitisation. Various forms of voids serve as hot spots – gas bubbles (predominantly in bulk explosives), glass (or plastic microballoons, for packaged products), or expanded polystyrene (bulk explosives). Gas bubble sensitisation uses the decomposition of sodium nitrite to produce nitrogen gas bubbles, which are dispersed throughout the bulk explosion. These gas bubbles, when hit by a shock wave (such as from a booster), compress and heat up, subsequently decomposing the explosive and releasing energy to sustain the detonation. It has been suggested that the use of different types of gases to create voids in non-ideal explosives could offer some alternatives to the sensitisation process, which could be reflected in the change of the detonation properties of the explosive. The reason would be that each gas has a different ratio of specific heats (=/), and when these gas bubbles are compressed, they will heat up to different temperature, affecting the decomposition of the explosive and thus, the VOD.

Shock tubes, either gas or explosively driven, are often used for physical modeling of free field explosions or arena testing. The use of shock tubes often requires less setup time of subjects and smaller driving forces to create pressure versus time waveforms similar to that of arena testing. However, the effects of the shock tube cross sectional geometry on waveform properties is uncertain while free field explosion wave propagation and estimation is well studied.

It is of a very sweet taste, and without odour, and is an active poison. Mere handling of it will in most persons induce sickness and headache. It explodes when heated to about 360° F. or from shock, but in small quantities it ignites and burns with some difficulty by the mere contact of flame.

"Most of the current explosives for mining blasting activities are based on ammonium nitrate (ANFO, emulsions and watergels). AN-based explosives’ detonating properties were discovered in the 50’s and since then they have proven to be reliable, safe and cost effective. However, there is no current alternative raw material to replace AN. As part of a program of research initially funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), Mining3 and the University of Queensland engaged in the search for potential oxidizing agent alternatives that could replace AN in the manufacture of mining explosives. Candidates included those that are produced in large quantities and that can be cost competitive with ammonium nitrate. The initial work identified hydrogen peroxide (HP), calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and sodium nitrate (SN). Explosives mixtures were prepared and sensitized using void sensitization techniques. The detonation properties results showed that explosives based onmixtures of HP/CN and HP/SN as the oxidizer were able to detonate in a range of 2000 – 5000 m/s, indiameters 50 and 102 mm, and densities in the range of 0.50 – 1.40 g/ml. Although more studies need to be conducted to fully understand these explosives, if successful, these explosives would be able to offer an alternative to the AN-based explosives in the mining industry."

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

In the construction field and to a lesser degree in mining, flagman are often necessary to move traffic and or pedestrians through work zones. Everyone readily recognizes that they are essential for the safety of the general public and the employees on the job. What is not often considered is the safety of the flagmen themselves. Actually, let’s call these employees “flaggers” recognizing the fact that there are as many women as men doing this job. The first problem we need to overcome is the misperception that flagging is a low skill function that can be done by any untrained employee. The reality is that the flagger works in a very hazardous position with serious responsibility for the safety of his fellow employees and the public at large. And to do this job properly re q u i re s that the flagger receive sufficient training before being sent out to the highway. It is also necessary to convince the flagger of the value and importance of their job in order to motivate them to do a professional job.testing, documentation of both, and accurate re c o rdkeeping are key aspects of HM126F. Of course, training and documentation requirements will vary depending on the type of operation involved, and there may be some differences in the application of requirements depending on your jursdiction. Nonetheless, failure to train and properly document such training can result in heavy fines and/or penalties.
