In this paper, a case study is presented of a large global cement company using a cloud and mobile based platform across 17 of their mines consistently over a large number of users over a period of over two years. The use of a blast platform is detailed which include blast designs, blast data collection and the trends in terms of results.

In Peru, after four years of pandemic, some mining companies have chosen to install integrated operating centers in central offices where through network technology and video surveillance it allows them to carry out their activities remotely, this has become a disruptive strategy to promote a safer and smarter mining industry. Our fundamental value is to improve the quality of life, safety and well being of our collaborators, that is why we have created the remote blasting engineering control center " Core" that allows us to humanize mining. Core is an integration of experience, security, technology, quality of life and artificial intelligence; it has media technology connected directly to the mining operation, specialist engineers and technical assistants in team they seek to create optimal proposals of drilling and blasting designs remotely that generate added value to customers. In the planning process the team suggests drilling meshes, in the loading process there are optimized, digitized designs and efficiency in the factory trucks finally in the safety process allows us to identify inadequate pipes within the blasting project, deviation of procedures, remote inspections, identify operating conditions to prevent future risks that may arise in the blasting process. The remote communication systems allow you to monitor mining operations remotely to identify and alert any operational or security deviation that was not identified by the personnel present in the operation, as well as to store images in case investigations are required. The results obtained have allowed us to reduce the exposure of personnel to any risk of the mining operation, to optimize times in the activities of our engineers who are in the mining operations since there is the permanent support of centralized specialists to face every challenge that arises in the operation, for the engineers who are in the offices of Core can be very close to the family and do not lose it, and for our customers it is to meet their needs with engineers specialists in the drilling and blasting process, as well as in safety to be able to proactively cope with any deviation that arises.

The code developed for this investigation simulates the pattern of interacting radial fractures from an array of blastholes, at various burdens and spacings, and in simultaneous and delayed modes. A bridge over a main line railroad system was scheduled for demolition. The bridge was made of reinforced concrete and spanned three mainline railroad tracks which could not be shut down due to blasting or demolition. To further complicate matters, the mainline tracks had high tension power lines running above the tracks, but below the bridge. These high tension wires provided the electricity for electrically powered trains. The tracks could not be damaged or disrupted, nor could the power line be broken.

There is very limited information available regarding the air pressures, flow rate, and velocity profiles in blast hole air drilling applications. Currently, many people are using incompressible flow correlation to calculate the bailing velocity. In this article, air pressure, flow rate, and velocity profiles are calculated using compressible flow theory. The airflow at the bottom of the hole is simulated using the jet flow theory. The concept of choking condition is introduced, and it is concluded that the velocity at the nozzle exit cross section cannot exceed sonic velocity. The minimum pressure required for achieving choked condition at the nozzle cross section is calculated. Choked and overchoked flow conditions at the nozzles are examined, and the maximum achievable cleaning power is correlated to the nozzle size and pressure.

In the Kiruna Research Mine, Sweden, four large open stopes have been mined, leaving intermediate piIlars and crown pillars. At the final stage of mining mass blasting of the crown pillars above two of the stopes was carried out. The crown pillars contained some 290,000 tons of iron ore. In the mass blast a new initiation technique was used, utilizing the new non-electric system NONEL ? UNIDET. The blasting technique including vibration control is described. The mass blast resulted in high recovery, good fragmentation and low vibration levels.

The evaluation of vibrations induced to build structures is one of the main concerns when dealing with blast works. EDP, the main Portuguese producer of electricity is presently incrementing energy production in some old hydropower dams by installing new production plants. The need for not disrupting production during the upgrading works causes some concerns related with vibrations induced to the production engines. Vibration estimation was performed in two of these dams, constructed in a granite environment, by performing controlled blasts. For each dam site, some vibration transmissivity laws were developed with the fitting process.

In 2008 a paper from the same source describing four actual cases of exposure of electronic detonators to lightning strikes was presented. It was shown that electronic detonators, like other initiation systems, are vulnerable to very close or direct lightning strikes. At the time of submitting this abstract no further incidents with lightning have been experienced. As a result of those original incidents, and in order to understand how the safety devices inside electronic detonators break down, two series of tests have been done, each with 2 detonator designs. In the first series detonators were subjected to capacitor discharges up to 6kV and 1kJ in energy. In the second series the intensity was increased to 800kV and 24kJ in energy. In the second series, more electrical energy was delivered to the detonator assembly than the explosive energy of the detonator. In both series both detonators showed a spectacular ability to resist very high discharge energies. The tests are described in detail with supporting photographs. The data for both pin-to-pin and pin-to-case (more relevant to lightning) are presented and discussed. The mechanism of breakdown of safety devices is now understood better and the learning is being used to design more robust products. In 1987, a large company reopened its quarry located in a very dense urban area in Montreal-East. This reopening occurred after a long period of inactivity during which houses were built within 200 feet of the quarry. During the first year of operation, people in the vicinity reacted negatively which caused the City of Montreal to seriously consider closing down the quarry by expropriation. This expropriation would have resulted in millions of dollars of loss for the operator.

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SD Mines), located in Rapid City, South Dakota, is one of only a few universities in the United States that offer a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering. The Department of Mining Engineering and Management (MEM) at SD Mines teaches courses that introduce students to concepts related to mining, including a course covering explosives engineering. Students are taught the basics of explosives theory and application in the mining and construction industry through a series of lectures and assignments. With limited field experience, many students find some topics difficult; these include: flyrock, ground vibration, timing, and others. Some US mining schools have an experimental mine in which they can simulate field conditions and conduct hands-on training, but not all universities have such facilities. For those without, teaching certain concepts can be more challenging in a pure classroom environment. To counteract the lack of an experimental mine, the mining department at SD Mines implemented Paradigm (Version 18.4.4984.0; McKenzie, 2017) a computerbased blast modeling software to improve the learning environment.

Presplitting is a form of blasting that when executed properly will create a smooth wall that will minimize secondary conditioning. In recent years, presplitting has become a popular technique to be used in both the mining and construction industries, however, presplitting fails on many occasions because of ‘geologic conditions’. This is typically because of improper explosive loads consisting of overloading and underloading blastholes. In this paper the authors introduce new factors such as a presplit factor which varies for different rock types, selection criteria for the spacing of presplits, and the optimization of explosive load for the technique of Precision Presplitting.
