The annual dinner of the Institution was held at the Savoy Hotel, London W.C.2, on 22 April, 1971. The President, Mr. M. J. Cahalan, was in the Chair; members and guests numbered 320. The toasts of The Queen and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, and the other Members of the Royal Family were proposed and loyally honoured. R.W. Boswell proposed the toast of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, the president responded, Professor M.G. Fleming proposed the toast of the guests and Sir Frederick Warner replied

Strong disagreement is registered by A.A. Rocha Gomes with Leca's account of the discovery published in Trans. IMM B, vol.99, 1990, p.B139-B152, which he contends minimises the role of the Portuguese state organisation Servico de Fomento Mineriro (SFM); the author, in response, once again thanks all SFM staff but reiterates his conclusion that Neves-Corvo was discovered through an amalgamation of exploration results and interpretations from different sub-disciplines and geoscientists

Although copper has been smelted for many years, relatively small attempt has been made in the past to examine the fundamental physical chemistry of the processes involved. Therefore, technological developments apart, slow progress has been made with the development of improved or new principles of smelting. The methods at present in use in the majority of the world’s smelters are essentially those employed at the beginning of the present century; it is significant that many of the textbooks on copper smelting, written some 50 years ago, are still regarded as standard works. The book is divided into seven chapters. In the first the fundamentals of modern smelting processes are briefly outlined for easy understanding of the subsequent sections, while the next two chapters are confined to the more theoretical aspects of the constitution of mattes and slags. Some problems of considerable practical importance are discussed in the remaining four chapters; these are (1) magnetite formation, (2) copper losses during smelting, (3) the recovery of sulphur from the smokes produced during smelting, and (4) the elimination of impurities. A collection of thermodynamic data relevant to copper pyrometallurgy is presented in an appendix, and, for the convenience of readers not well acquainted with thermodynamics, a brief explanation of the thermodynamic terms and methods employed is given in a second appendix

Offering 1000 hour salt spray protection, the KEYCOAT 1000 coating presents no chipping, cracking or deformation when hammered or flexed through 90 degrees or more. A personal overview and assessment is given of the 42 papers delivered over the three days of the symposium. As well as 18 from the UK there were presentations from 16 other countries; 20 were on rock tunnels, 13 on soft ground and 3 on both; there were 17 case histories and 16 discussions of tunnelling machines but, for the first time in the conference series, almost no papers on tunnelling for mining purposes. Some projects, such as the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and the London Ring Main, attracted a number of papers addressing their different aspects
