Vanadium-titanium magnetite from Panzhihua was crushed with open and closed circuit process by high pressure grinding roller (HPGR). The particle size characteristics of the crushed product were analyzed and the micro-cracks generated by HPGR during the crushing process were studied. The results showed that, in crushed products, the reduction ratio increases and the size distribution becomes more uniform with increasing of the pressure on roller?s surfaces. The fine fraction content of crushing products from -3.2 mm classification closed-circuit by HPGR increases obviously compared with that by Jaw Crusher and particle size distribution is more uniform. Large amount of intra-crystalline cracks and cleavage cracks are generated in vanadium-titanium magnetite crushed by HPGR, which makes the specific surface area larger and Bond grinding work index (objective particle size is 0.074 mm) decreased by 14.05% than that by Jaw Crusher. And the liberation degree of monomer of the product crushed by HPGR increased compared with that by Jaw Crusher with the similar fineness of grinding. Drilling and Blasting are two important unit operations in the production cycle of a mine and a strong link exists between these two and other unit operations/subsystems like loading, transportation, and crushing. Under the present concept of ? Mine to Mill?, it is important to optimize the drilling and blasting operations by applying scientific approach to drilling and blasting using sophisticated instruments and new technologies, which depends heavily on Information technology (IT) to meet this imperative. Development of innovative models and software has lead to blast optimization process. Till date, the blast results are evaluated in terms of available empirical approaches like powder factor, which are too simple to exclude some key parameters or lack in providing reliability because of non-availability of user friendly IT enabled techniques. Although with the help of developed approaches, formulation of user-friendly software to assist the site engineers in effective post blast assessment has started but there is a dearth of holistic approach to design an optimum blast considering the techno-economic feasibility of the subsystems and the geo-mining conditions to achieve blast optimization. The science of IT enablement in drilling and blasting is capable to build innovative models for achieving blast performances which will be doped with productivity, economy and safety with due regard to environment. The present paper discusses the use of existing IT enablement in various mines of India citing the Indian scenario and the future requirements for achieving the techno-economics in overall mining operations.

Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. "Tumbling mills are machine, operating in non-equilibrium, capable of applying forces on the ore contained within, causing the ore to break down. The action of the mill on the ore is very inefficient, producing a large quantity of heat. The inefficiencies of the mill drive the desire for improvement, spawning research and development activities. Given the non-equilibrium nature of the mill, the theory of Large Deviations is proposed as the framework that captures the state of the mill. The theory of Large Deviations allows for the determination of the rate function and the scaled cumulant generating function (SCGF), for systems in either equilibrium or non-equilibrium. Powerful connections can been made between familiar concepts of statistical physics and the concepts introduced by the theory of Large Deviations: entropy can be associated with the rate function; the scaled cumulant generating function with the free energy. It is shown that observables, compatible with Large Deviation theory, can be identified for the tumbling mill. Here, the time series of the energy associated with an element of the charge is such an observable. Furthermore, using some experimental data, it is shown that the time series of the energy can define a rate function, thereby describing the system within the Large Deviation framework. Finally, a discussion of the results is given, particularly how this theory can be further developed for tumbling mills."

This study covers the investigations based on the electrokinetic and rheological properties to explain the interactions between kaolin minerals and commercially available polyelectrolyte in anionic character. Additional adsorption test were also conducted to support the interaction mechanism. Adsorption tests showed that adsorption densities decrease by increasing the solid content. In-creasing the solids contents from 1% to 30% by weight resulted in the decrease on adsorption from 2.14 mg/g to 1.85 mg/g. Because of its difficulty, the solids ratio at 70% was not studied. However, following to trend of the curve plotted adsorption density-solid ratio, an estimation was made and adsorption density at 70% solid content was extracted from the curve as 1.75~1.80 mg/g. The electrokinetic studies pointed out that the presence of polyelectrolyte increase the zeta potential of kaolin from 40 mV to 60 mV which is reasonable conditions to disperse and stabilize the kaolin slurry and lower the viscosity. When these result of the different tests are combined and considered together, 2 mg/g polyelectrolyte concentration was noted as optimal concentration where adsorption density, viscosity and zeta potential of the slurries give maxima and remain constant after this concentration.

In order to investigate the effect of nanobubbles on adsorption of surfactant on mineral surface, the nanobubbles on the surface of calcite with -37µm fraction in the sodium oleate system were controlled by pressurization and decompression to mixing vessel. Subsequently, the adsorption amount of sodium oleate on the surface of calcite were detected by ultraviolet spectrum at different stirring times and different pressures. At the same time, the nanobubbles on the calcite surface were imaged with atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, a homemade vacuum Hallimond tube device was used for the flotation of single mineral, and the grade and recovery of minerals in concentrate was used to determine the influence of the nanobubbles on flotation. The experimental results showed that a large number of nanobubbles were found on the calcite surface by AFM under the dissolved oxygen difference (DOD) condition of -4 mg/L. And a large difference in adsorption capacity of sodium oleate on the surface of calcite was observed under different air pressure conditions. It indicated that the ambient pressure had a certain effect on the adsorption of sodium oleate on the calcite surface, and this effect did not depend on the constant low pressure or constant normal pressure, but depended on the changing process of pressure. The single mineral flotation experiment results indicated the recovery of calcite under decompression condition (formation condition of nanobubbles) was 1.5-2 times that under constant normal pressure, and the flotation time is much shorter. Moreover, the recovery under constant normal pressure was greatly influenced by flotation time. In this paper, only one aspect of the effect of nanobubbles on mineral flotation was preliminarily explored. It was confirmed that after vacuum-pumping, the adsorption of sodium oleate on calcite surface could be increased, the flotation time also was greatly reduced and the recovery of calcite was increased.

Yunnan mineral is a kind of containing Ta-Nb rare earth deposit, the most potential economic valuable element in it is Sc, and raw mineral has 17.0 g/t Sc. Take the character of Sc into account, the key problem in producing scandium chloride molten salt by adaptive technology is how to man-ufacturer anhydrous scandium chloride molten salt. During the course above, the key problem is that preventing Scandium chloride from being hy-drolyzed into ScOCl. The ScOCl content of molten salt not only affect purifying scandium but al-so do harm to the production of Mg-Al alloy. In order to restrain the creation of ScOCl, add ammo-nium chloride into molten salt. As long as ScOCl is created, it would be chloridized. Thus, during the course of dehydrating anhydrous chloride molten salt this method prevents scandium from hydrolyzing. Accordingly, the key phase of this producing course is eliminate ammonium chloride and the surplus crystal water, and the most crucial of it is restrain scandium chloride from being hydrolyzed into ScOCl. This research analyzed the theory that ammonium chloride is trend to be hydrolyzed into ammo-nium chloride, and propose the research scheme of restraining this process from creating ScOCl. The new process of restraining the generating of ScOCl and dehydration for crystal water rare earth chloride is adopted: Inert gas temperature increases rapidly to a certain degree to eliminate ammonium chloride and crystal water. The experimental research were done such as : the temperature of eliminating ammonium chloride and crystal water, amount of ammonium chloride, time, temperature growth speed, influence of inert gas flow toward to scandium percent hydrolysis, whereby, we conclude the optimal process condition in this period: Temperature: 400°C, proportion of oxidized scandium and ammonium chloride is 1:1.5(Proportion of oxidized scandium and additional salt is 1:5.4), time is 120minute, temperature growth speed is 10?/min inert gas flow is 5L/min.

"Tatasteel’s West Bokaro washery#3 is designed to deslime raw coal at 0.5mm; the oversize (+0.5mm) is beneficiated in dense media cyclones (DMC) while the undersize (-0.5mm) is beneficiated in froth flotation (FF) cells. Nearly, 80% of the raw coal feed reports to the DMC circuit consisting of four parallel streams. Presently, the performance of DMCs at washery#3 is interpreted by: (a) comparing the actual plant yield w.r.t the lab predicted yield and (b) misplacement of clean coal to middllings.However, the comparison between actual & lab predicted yield is fallacious given the fact that the lab predicts yield of the borehole sample while the feed received at the plant has different characteristics altogether due to the dilution during mining. To mitigate the said limitations, a quick diagnosis tool using the past data has been developed that will give a prediction of performance of different coal seams in the DMCs, inputs being feed ash to DMCs and stream wise feed specific gravity (coal & magnetite combined).The tool also will help in identifying the root cause on real time basis thereby helping the operator to take necessary corrective actions. The operator can intimate the mining personnel in cases of shale reporting to the feed as a result of dilution during mining. In events of higher standard deviations between the parallel streams w.r.t feed specific gravity, the operator can adjust the parameters accordingly to minimize the yield loss. INTRODUCTION West Bokaro came into existence in 1948, as an independent coal company, managed by M/S Anderson Wright. Tata Steel acquired the Company in 1956 to meet its requirement of metallurgical grade coal for Iron making. Subsequently, in 1976, it was made a division of Tata Steel. In 1974, when coal mines were nationalized, West Bokaro was exempted as it produced coal only for captive consumption of the Steel Works. The first washery of India was set up in West Bokaro. The business objective of the West Bokaro division is to produce clean coal at optimum cost for captive use in the steel plant of Tata Steel at Jamshedpur. The strategy is to reduce ash with minimum loss of yield so that quality of coal improves and yet the cost is beneficial vis-a vis imported coal. The primary product is the metallurgical grade coal for coke ovens, which converts coal into coke for use in the Blast Furnaces."

N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) has already been proven a good solvent for extraction of coal. It is believed that organic components of coal are likely to be dissolved with the solvolytic power of NMP. During dissolution process, original coal also gets disintegrated and thus helps in further extraction. Coal extraction highly depends on temperature, coal to solvent ratio, N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) to Ethylenediamine (EDA) ratio and the size of coal particles. The process has been established in the laboratory. There is no reference available beyond lab scale. In present study, we are running a bench scale plant with 40 kg/batch capacity. Design of experiment was done in such a way that the optimum zone of the process gets evaluated for clean coal having low ash with high yield. Bench scale plant trial was conducted based on optimum zone developed during design of experiments (DOE). From the DOE analysis it was observed that feed size and coal to solvent ratio are important parameters for this process. Total 27 experiments (four factors with 3 level of variation) were designed through Box-Behnken model. It was observed that -0.5 mm feed size of coal, 150 °C extraction temperature, 17:1 NMP to EDA ratio, 1:9 coal to solvent ratio was optimum conditions. The results obtained at optimum conditions are 50% clean coal yield with 5% ash.

Wet processes are commonly used in coal preparation field home and abroad. Dry coal cleaning technology is very necessary in China because more than 2/3 of coal resources deposited in arid areas, which are difficult to separate coal with wet processes. A particular interest of this article is the discussion of separation research development of dry coal cleaning in China, such as an air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) beneficiation technology, a compound dry (pneumatic) separation technology and a triboelectrostatic separation technology. The fundament and importance of dry coal cleaning methods above were introduced. On the basis of analyzing parameters which influence the performance of separators, including that of structure, technologic and operating, the separation research status of dry coal cleaning methods, especially the ADMFB beneficiation technology, were discussed and reviewed. The recent developments, especially the fluidized bed beneficiation for <6mm fine coal with an external energy assisted, including a vibrated fluidized bed and a magnetically fluidized bed, and the triboelectrostatic separation for <1mm fine coal are also introduced. The study and application results in China show that dry coal cleaning technologies can efficiently beneficiate different coals with different sizes. The ADMFB can separate >6mm coarse coal with an E value of 0.05~0.08, the external energy assisted fluidized bed can separate <6mm fine coal with an E value of 0.07~0.09, the triboelectrostatic technology can efficiently separate <1mm fine coal, and the compound dry separation technology can efficiently separate >3mm coal with a easy washability. The dry coal cleaning provides an efficient and lower cost clean approach for coals distributed in arid areas.

"This paper describes the process flow of a selective processing method for acidic mine waters formed in the copper sulfide industry and characterized by a high content of copper, iron, and manganese ions. The proposed method comprises a series of sequential processes: the 1st stage is the recovery of Cu2+ ions by precipitation, the 2nd stage is the recovery of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions as a dispersed phase by acid-base precipitation, followed by recovery in the 3rd stage of Mn2+ ions by converting Mn2+ with an oxidizing agent into insoluble forms of manganese and subsequent recovery of the dispersed phase by electroflotation. The developed method was tested on the acidic tailing storage facility (TSF) water of a mining project in the Urals region. The practical results of the implementation of the developed method have shown that its implementation will allow to recover copper, iron, and manganese in the form of salable products with a simultaneous decrease in their concentrations in adjacent water bodies down to the applicable MPCs. The process is a simple one, does not require any sophisticated expensive equipment and can be implemented either as a standalone solution or as part of existing treatment facilities. INTRODUCTION As a result of unsustainable utilization of natural resources in Russia, only a small fraction is processed into commodity products, while the rest is systematically dumped as emissions, effluents, and other wastes, polluting the environment. By amount of waste and concentration of valuable components, those wastes can be classified as aqueous technogenic resources [1, 2]. Therefore, the development of processing methods for this mineral resource category is an urgent and priority task that will significantly improve the industry’s profitability and the environmental conditions in the respective regions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Following research methods were mainly applied in this study: lab-scale and pilot-scale tests in a diaphragmless two-chamber electric flotation cell; for solutions and recoverable process products — chemical analysis using photometric determination techniques for metal cations and atomic adsorption determination techniques for the processing products. The phase composition of the precipitates formed in the process was investigated by X-ray phase analysis in the general-purpose diffractometer with a copper anode DRON-1."

Goethite ore are the third most abundant source of iron. The overwhelming part of these ore is represented by low-grade varieties which cannot be used in iron and steel industry without preliminary beneficiation. Biomass is a renewable solid fuel, which is feasible for the substitution of coke and coal in the manufacturing due to its lower contents of harmful elements and abundant raw material sources. Utilization of biomass in iron ore sintering process as heating agent and reducing agent contributes to energy conservation and emission reduction. The biomass was mixed together with goethite ore for roasting process to investigate the effects of reduction roasting. The results show that the goethite ore is dramatically reduced and magnetized into maghemite by biomass with the biomass dosage less than 20% and the roasting temperature below 650 oC. When the goethite ore roasted with biomass, the magnetization values could be enhanced more than two orders of magnitude, meets the standard of magnetic separation, which could significantly reduce the iron beneficiation cost. Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

In sodium oleate and salicylhydroxamic acid systems, sequence of floatability of three sulfate minerals is: barite>celestite>gypsum, in lauryl amine system is: gypsum>celestite>barite. XPS and infrared spectrum analysis are used to find that it is chemical reaction between sodium oleate and three minerals, physical adsorption on the surface of minerals for lauryl amine, and it is chelating reaction between salicylhydroxamic acid and three minerals possibly. Theoretical calculation on chemical bonds in crystal structures of three minerals is carried out, finding that breaking degree of Mn+?O2- in crystal structures of three sulfate minerals is closed related with floatability.

"The article presents the materials about the appropriateness of the use of rental indices to assess the effectiveness of the use of deposits of rare earth elements (REE). The authors suggest from the standpoint of rent payments to rate for the owner the possibility of using the anticipated rental income as the indicator for the analysis of preferences and economic significance of enrichment of extracted raw materials in the emerging field of rare earth metals (REE). Usually from ore mined at the fields, for flotation technology to produce concentrates with collective REE, then they are subjected to chemical-metallurgical processing of the received products are divided into pure oxides, chemical compounds or isolated from them pure metals and alloys. This commercial product is shipped to the buyer. REE were a non-renewable natural resources, so the calculations for determining differential and specific rent showed that during the development of the technologies of mineral processing of a specific field it is necessary to consider what the expected rental income depends on the magnitude of differential rent is related to the volume of production of REE for the whole planned period of exploitation of natural resources. This income is determined by the amount of stock field. For long-term exploitation of the deposit is observed in almost direct proportional dependence between the annual differential rent and the rental income. The decrease in rents in the long run is determined by the change in the composition of ores included in the extracted raw materials and the balance between light and heavy REE. The largest 70% reduction of the rent projected for ""cerium"" fields, while for ""yttrium"" these losses are considerably smaller. Tomtor, Chuktukon and Katuginskoye Russian deposits are characterized by a level of rent that is comparable to the mastered foreign sources of REE. Thus, the enrichment of minerals with REM in the domestic deposits is quite competitive at the world level. INTRODUCTION Deposits of rare earth metals (REE) are non-renewable resources that should be developed and used so that it would be possible to provide a reduction due to payment of appropriate resources for future generations. This compensation, due to the reduction of natural resources, can be carried out both in natural and in economic terms (1). When analyzing economic compensation options, particular attention should be paid to rental income in assessing the attractiveness of using different REE deposits. It is known that absolute and differential rents are summands when calculating the value of natural rents. The value of the absolute natural rent is proportional to the unit price of the product obtained from mineral raw materials and sold on the commodity market. Limitations, as well as the use in production processes and business, contribute to the gradual reduction of natural resources, which increases their consumer value and affects the price of commodity products from primary raw materials."

With the ambitious target of adding another 2,00,000 MW of power generation by the year 2017 in India the demand for coal is bound to grow. The non-coking coal deposits in India are characterized as high ash and difficult-to-wash coals. Quality improvement by beneficiation is almost mandatory due to MoEF notification to use <34% ash coal for all power plants except those located at pithead. Most of the coal washeries in India are based on wet process, where the coal fines are allowed to settle in thickeners. The coarser particles settle faster leaving the fine particles suspended for longer period. The dispersed fine coal particles contain some surface charge, which leads to the development of electrical repulsion between the particles, and as a result of this, the suspension becomes more stable. In order to destabilize the colloidal suspension, flocculants are usually added, so that the settling rate of the fine particles also increases. These flocculants are of cationic, anionic and non-anionic depending upon the type of charge released when dispersed in water. The flocculants may act partly for charge neutralization and partly for inter particle bridging and electrostatic patch formation. The effectiveness of any type of flocculants depends upon the molecular weight and charge density of the polymer. The increasing demand of the filler industry regarding fineness and better delaminated products led to the development of a series of different grinding machines, which differentiate basically by the grinding mechanism as well as the kind of classification. Spiral jetmills grind, as it is well known preferably by delamination, therefore a spiral jetmill with integrated dynamic classifier has been developed. Especially the enhancement of the functional properties of the used industrial mineral fillers is a factor of highly increasing importance. These properties are very often bound to the platy shape of the minerals expressed by the aspect ratio. The developed Spiral Jetmill shows sufficient ability for such delamination and therefore increases in aspect ratio. In a series of comparative tests the suitability and advantages of this system regarding achievable fineness down to the submicron range as well as the conservation or even improvement of the aspect ratio of different minerals has been studied. As an emphasis on the results application tests with certain materials in the plastics field have been conducted. Due to the fact that in this range the required specific energy for achieving the necessary fineness increases exponentially another target is to optimize the grinding efficiency. A special feed control system provides on one hand a sufficient load inside the mill to obtain maximum utilization of the applied energy and on the other hand to prevent the mill from overfilling and coming with this a poor classification. The integrated classifier is a combination of a high speed motor with directly attached classifier wheels. This unit on one hand grants the necessary high circumferential speed of up to 190 m/s for providing an exact top cut of the ultrafine products and on the other hand gives the required operational reliability for continuous operation. Hard grindable impurities, which enrich inside the mill chamber, can be rejected from the process leading to an even cleaner product. Comparative tests on a talc product with certain free quartz impurities showed a significant improvement of the final product with respectively low loss on rejected material. This effect again had a beneficiary impact on the suitability of the final product when used in plastics application.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates an iron ore mine, three beneficiation plants and three pelletizing plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation in the beneficiation plants are wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the WLIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Currently, the high-grade iron ore deposit of Kiirunavaara has a low grade of silica in situ, of approximately 3.0% SiO2, but the silica grade is expected to increase in the deeper parts of the deposit with a complex silicate mineralogy. An increasing silica grade will affect especially the production of direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets), one of the main products of LKAB in Kiruna with an average silica grade of under 0.75% SiO2. The silica grade in the magnetite concentrate is normally limited to a maximum level of 0.55% SiO2 in order to achieve the required chemical composition in the pelletizing process. In order to study the possibility to reduce silicate content in the magnetite concentrate (pellet feed) in the beneficiation plants in Kiruna obtained by wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS), enlarged mineral processing test work was carried out in the LKAB’s mineral processing laboratories in 2016. The test work consisted of comminution, low intensity magnetic separation and reverse cationic silicate flotation at laboratory scale, complemented by screen analysis, chemical assays and mineralogical investigation. The results of these mineral processing test work showed that the magnetic separation is not sufficient to reduce the silica content in the magnetite concentrate, particularly in the case of the high-SiO2 ore type B2-a. The reverse cationic flotation can be regarded as a possible solution to reduce the silicate content in the magnetite concentrate obtained by WLIMS and to achieve the required silica grade of less than 0.55 % SiO2 in the pellet feed. The results of this study provide a good basis to understand the behaviour of different silicates in the existing beneficiation process. Furthermore, it serves valuable information for development of new beneficiation processes and for investment in new equipment at the beneficiation plants in Kiruna in the future.

"In this study, the flotation characteristics of a cassiterite-bearing fine-grained and complex skarn ore from a deposit in the Ore Mountains is investigated. The tests are performed using an oil-assisted column flotation approach to process very fine ore fractions and avoid losses of cassiterite into the tailings. First, process parameters are obtained for a finely ground artificial mixture of quartz, magnetite and cassiterite, simulating the real ore. Thereby, magnetite is used, as iron oxides can have a detrimental effect on the flotation due to a similar flotation behavior. In addition, they can act as a source of multivalent ions, which are known to reduce the concentration of collector molecules, active for flotation. Based on the results, selected parameters are further tested for cassiterite skarn ore from the Hämmerlein deposit including a pre-conditioning and a water exchange step to remove ionic contaminants. The process response is analyzed in detail by XRF (X-ray fluorescence) and MLA (mineral liberation analysis) to get a better understanding of the behavior of the single ore components. Sulfosuccinamate type surfactant is utilized as the collector, emulsifier and to reduce the froth destabilization through nonpolar oil. Sodium hexafluorosilicate is added as the depressant.INTRODUCTION Complex skarn ore deposits containing considerable amounts of tin, indium and other metals are located in the Ore Mountains region (Germany). In this study, a skarn ore from the Hämmerlein deposit was investigated. Due to the finely disseminated nature of this ore, past beneficiation attempts failed, and the ore was considered economically unprocessable. However, increasing resource demands brings it back into focus (Schuppan and Hiller, 2012). Cassiterite is the main tin bearing mineral in this ore. Due to its high density (~7 g/cm³), the predominant beneficiation technique is gravity separation (Angadi et al., 2015). Tin ores from disseminated deposits have to be extensively comminuted to reach a sufficient degree of liberation of the cassiterite grains. As cassiterite has a brittle nature, it is preferable enriched in small size fractions, during comminution (Angadi et al., 2015). Gravity separation methods become more and more inefficient for particles smaller 40 µm (Falcon, 1982), causing tin losses of up to 30 to 40wt.-% (Angadi et al., 2015). Thus, froth flotation of cassiterite was first utilized in Altenberg in the Ore Mountains as an additional processing step to reduce the cassiterite losses into gravity separation tailings (Bulatovic, 2010; Gruner and Bilsing, 1992). Although the reported lower size limits for an effective cassiterite floatability are often smaller compared to other minerals, the flotation performance is in general decreasing for small particle sizes < 10 µm (Trahar and Warren, 1976). Therefore, different approaches have been already investigated for the flotation of such fine cassiterite fractions to overcome the limits in particle size. Bilgen et al. investigated the shear flocculation of cassiterite with a sulfosuccinamate collector (Bilgen et al., 1994). The agglomeration flotation of cassiterite has been tested by Schubert et al. (Schubert et al., 1966), in which the selective coagulation of fine hydrophobic particles and oil droplets leads to an increase of the effective particle size. Recently, Leistner at al. investigated an oil-assisted agglomeration flotation for ultra-fine cassiterite ore fractions (Leistner et al., 2016). However, a poor response due to an increased concentration of Fe and Ca ions, unselective oil/gangue coagulation and froth instability, that is caused by oil/frother interactions, has been observed."

In Canadian oil sands processing, flotation is used to recover liberated bitumen droplets from oil sands slurries. Similar to conventional mineral flotation practice, a fundamental limitation of recovering bitumen from low grade oil sand ores is its slow and ineffective aeration of the liberated small bitumen droplets. Gas nucleation and cavitation could provide better mechanisms for accelerating bitumen-bubble attachment. A research program was undertaken to examine factors affecting spontaneous bubble nucleation on bitumen surfaces. The results demonstrate that surface hydrophobicity and existence of gas nuclei in process water play a critical role for bubble nucleation. While there are more bubbles nucleated on highly hydrophobic silanated glass surfaces than on moderately hydrophobic bitumen, bubble nucleation on clean hydrophilic glass surfaces is negligible. Heating process water up to 85 ~ 95oC (as used in commercial operation) or boiling tap water prior to gas nucleation tests is shown to remove sufficient amount of gas nuclei existing in the water, thereby drastically reducing the number of bubbles nucleated on bitumen. Enhancing gas nuclei formation in hot process water is identified as a promising strategy to improve bitumen-bubble attachment during oil sands conditioning, and hence to increase bitumen recovery from low grade ores.
