"Froth Flotation is undoubtedly one of the most critical processes in coking coal washing plants. This work was carried out at Bhelatand Coal Preparation Plant of Tata Steel was with an objective of cost optimization in fine coal processing. The sources of raw coal for the plant include coal from underground mines of Jharia coalfield and procured open-cast raw coal. Coal from different sources vary in quality and possess different floatability characteristics.Synthetic collector is being used in plant as a flotation reagent. An alternate collector with new chemistry was developed for reducing total treatment cost without compromising product yield and quality. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to assess the performance of various sources of raw coal and plant scale trial was started. At first, the new generation coal collector was entirely substituted with the existing collector in the laboratory scale. However the plant scale trial data was not in accordance with laboratory results and indicated inferior flotation performanceThe issue was studied and data based conclusions were drawn that the new generation collector aids faster and uncontrollable kinetics. A decision was taken for co-dosing of the synthetic and new collector for the second phase of the trial. A detailed laboratory analysis was done again and few dosing ratios that predicted optimum results were selected for plant trial. The dosing ratio was optimised as per flotation yield and product ashes during the plant trial. The results showed significant improvement from the first phase and optimum dosing rates were decided based on plant observations and data collection. The influence of various process indicators including water quality, feed and product ashes and process yield was studied during all the trials and promising results were established. The co-dosing of both the collectors conferred cost advantage and enabled to achieve superior performance."

An arsenical ore containing both pyrite and arsenopyrite was heated to a temperature at which decomposition and distillation took place. The condensate consisted of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide, although the analysis of the ore showed that volatile arsenic and sulphur were present in proportion to produce a condensate of arsenic trisulphide and sulphur. Distillation tests on the mineral arsenopyrite also produced a condensate of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide. This arsenic sulphide gave a distinct x-ray diffraction pattern which was not listed in the A.S.T.M. data file. This same sulphide can be produced by heating a mixture of arsenic and sulphur in vacuo. Its chemical analysis corresponds to As2S2. The dissociation pressures of arsenopyrite and the vapour pressures of arsenic disulphide and arsenic metal were measured, using a quartz "spoon" gauge. "With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of preconcentration in hard-rock mining operations has gained greater interest. Dense medium separation is a process that can be conducted at particle sizes from 250 to 0.50 mm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the valuable minerals. Pilot-plant case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, including mineral systems such as spodumene, sulfide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulfide ores. These case studies demonstrate that, for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20–60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90%.RÉSUMÉ Au vu de la hausse des coûts liés à l’énergie et du déclin de la teneur des minerais, le rôle de la préconcentration dans les exploitations minières en roche dure présente un intérêt croissant. La séparation (ou concentration) en milieu dense est un processus pouvant être mené sur des calibres de grains de 250 à 0.50 mm avec un rendement élevé de séparation, en fonction des caractéristiques de libération des constituants des minéraux métallifères. Sont présentées dans cet article des études de cas menées dans des usines pilotes du site de Lakefield de SGS, lesquelles incluent des systèmes de minéraux tels que le spodumène, les minerais aurifères sulfurés et les minerais sulfurés complexes. Preconcentration has been practiced in the industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, which typically require finer grind sizes and incur higher energy costs.The benefits of preconcentration are:• lower mining costs, which allows for nonselective mining;• lower process capital and operating costs (e.g., resulting from reduced grinding, flotation, and fines disposal stages);• increased ore reserves, which provides the potential to treat lower grade ore;• increased mine production without expansion of the existing plant or concentrator;• reduced overall tailings impoundment by converting the reject into a byproduct (e.g., underground backfill or aggregate);• improved efficiency of downstream processes (e.g., silica removal in electric arc furnace feed, removal of softer sliming minerals prior to grinding);• potential application to brownfield operations and greenfield projects; and• a “green” process option, which reduces processing energy consumption;– reduces mill feed;– increases stage metal recovery (higher grade feed);– increases mill metal output per tonne processed;– reduces surface plant, tailings dump, and tailings pond requirements because the plant has a small footprint and can be installed underground; and– can be applied to retreatment of old tailings dumps to recover metal values and reduce environmental impacts (e.g., dissolved metal runoff, acid drainage)."

"Nanisivik Mines Ltd. operates a 10-M W diesel-electric generating plant at its zinc-lead operation on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. This paper provides a description of the plant and the integrated waste heat recovery system. Data is presented detailing the actual costs of operating a plant over a period of seven years. Problems in operation are described as well as the success of the plant in meeting its objectives over the years. IntroductionNanisivik is located on the shore of Strathcona Sound at the north end of Baffin Island (Fig. I). Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has operated a 2,100 tonne per day zinc-lead underground mine and a concentrator, together with supporting infrastructure, at this location since October 1976. Annual production of 100 000 tonnes of zinc and 10 000 tonnes of lead concentrate is transported by ship to Europe during the mid -July to mid October shipping season.All electrical needs of the project are provided by the company-owned and -operated power plant. Facilities served by this electrical system are the underground mining areas, the concentrator and industrial area, a townsite, airport, and shiploading dock complex."

This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.

Process improvements which have reduced the lead content of slag from the Brunswick lead blast furnace are described. Microscope examination and electron microprobe analyses, supported by the results of slag settling and viscosity tests, showed that typically about 70% of the lead in the lead blast-furnace slag was present in the form of entrained prills of metallic lead. The total lead content was found to increase with the magnetic susceptibility of the slag. Measurements in the furnace settler indicated the presence of a magnetite-rich layer between bullion and slag, arising from high magnetite levels in the slag. This layer was believed to inhibit the settling of entrained lead from the slag. Tracer tests showed that the average slag residence time in the settler was less than 2 minutes. Improvements in coke quality and sizing, which led to a reduction in the slag magnetite content, and the installation of a larger settler and a continuous Roy tapper, have all contributed to a significant decrease in the slag lead content.

"This study focuses on comparing the “blinding” effectiveness of various organic additives as part of a general review of using organic additives to mitigate preg-robbing and improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores. The laboratory results compared the impact of various organic additives on the prevention of gold adsorption using both activated carbon and ore samples containing carbonaceous matter, generally referred to as total carbonaceous matter (TCM). Although several organic reagents were found to have a significant blinding effect on activated carbon, these results did not translate into increased gold leaching efficiencies with actual ore samples.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing refractory ores, which contain carbonaceous matter, have been problematic in cyanide plants for many years. In industry, preg-robbing by carbonaceous matter may be mitigated using various techniques including flotation, to remove the carbonaceous matter; addition of blinding agents, to passivate the carbon surface and prevent adsorption of gold cyanide complex; roasting, to partially or fully destroy the carbonaceous matter; chemical oxidation (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986); pressure oxidation; or microbial deactivation (Dunne, Staunton, & Afewu, 2013). Carbon-in-Leach and Resin-in-Leach are also used as process alternatives in which activated carbon or resins are used to compete with the carbonaceous matter for gold cyanide adsorption. For highly preg-robbing ores, thiosulphate leaching may be considered as an alternative to conventional cyanide chemistry (Baláz, et al., 2000). Natural carbonaceous matter is composed mainly of hydrocarbons, organic acids, and graphitic/amorphous elemental carbon. Natural elemental carbon that behaves as activated carbon is considered to be the main reason for preg-robbing, although the true nature of this phenomenon is not fully understood (Tan, Feng, Lukey, & van Deventer, 2005). In general, the hydrocarbon fraction is assumed to have negligible interaction with gold, while organic acids, such as humic acids, may form complexes with gold, inhibiting its extraction in cyanide solutions. Organic reagents have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Abotsi & Osseo-Asare (1987) tested various organic compounds, with two possible effects in mind. First, the organic compounds were expected to adsorb onto the surface of the solids as anionic/cationic species; the resulting electrostatic interactions between the Au(CN)2- anion and the negatively/positively charged surface would inhibit/enhance the gold uptake. Second, the organic reagents were expected to coat the surface of the carbonaceous component in the ore, limiting the available adsorption sites and reducing gold losses. "Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time, over 140 million tons of waste and low-grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electro winning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October 1986, was designed to process 3000 USGPM of dilute copper solution to produce 5000 tons per year of high-quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start-up and initial year of operation of this plant. The three areas: leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to the Gibraltar operation.The Leaching CircuitThe mine waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dumps. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and dissolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the sulphides and solubilization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be near the ideal pH of 1.9 to 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory leaching tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate (Fig. I).The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate (Fig. 2)."

The generation of droplets and their subsequent reaction in the emulsion is critical to the overall kinetics of oxygen steelmaking. High temperature experiments have been performed at McMaster University to study this behavior. The results from this work and other previous studies has formed the basis of a number of physical and chemical models that attempt to describe the critical aspects of droplet behavior in Oxygen Steelmaking. These models include semi-empirical models for predicting droplet generation rate, droplet size distribution and droplet residence time as a function of blowing parameters.

The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.

Many gold deposits in the world have not been developed clue to the presence of copper and other base metals which can cause metallurgical and environmental challenges clue to the formation of base metal cyanide complexes. SART technology (sulphidization-acidification-recycle-thickening) can resolve these issues by recovering copper as a high grade sulphide concentrate, recycling the associated cyanide back to the gold leach, and eliminating the downstream environmental liabilities. Project economics can be improved substantially, leading to a positive re-evaluation of new and existing gold-copper projects. Some aspects of the design and operation of two recently commissioned SART plants will be discussed.

WE assemble again today in this comfortable, hospitable Inn to begin this, the 58th, Meeting of our Society. It is just a year ago when last we met but that year was, probably, the most portentious year in the whole history of mankind. In that year, the German 'Atlantic Wall' was broached, the Rhine was crossed, and Germany, as a Nation, has ceased to be. The agony of Europe is over; convalescence may be, probably will be, slow. But blood no longer flows in Europe. Time will heal the sores, cover the scars, regenerate the industries, rebuild the cities, and re-establish the people. True, the war of all wars is not yet over. True, a bloody conflict remains . But, the power of the United Nations now converges on one target. The rain of blood will be heavy. We can hope the storm will be short. The sun is on the horizon. The light of peace 1s in the sky. What of that Peace? Are we ready for it? Have we a 'sure foundation ' for our future world? Are the footings under that foundation broad and substantial? Can we look forward with confidence to a lasting peace and a fruitful life? The United Nations, even as this is being written, are in conference in San Francisco, placing the footings, rearing the foundations for a world edifice. There are bickerings; there are jealousies. The world is tired, and a tired family always squabbles. We can, we must, believe that the decisions they make, the edifices they rear, will be better than anything we each could effect separately. It will be a compromise, probably; it will carry things that will hurt us, just as it will carry things that will hurt others. We can, we must, believe that the good of the whole is a greater good than the good of the part. Each Nation within the United Nations must sacrifice something, each part of each Nation must sacrifice something, each individual within each part of each nation must contribute something, if the whole is to be wholesome. Sacrifice and contribution must be the order of the day if the New World we are about to build is to be worth while. What of Nova Scotia? The world has travelled far in the last year; how far has Nova Scotia gone? Canada has preparations for the Peace under way; what has Nova Scotia done? Is Nova Scotia preparing counter measures for the sacrifices it must make? Is each of us ready to contribute his share?

"Optimizing hydraulic fracture injection parameters in order to maximize hydrocarbon extraction and to avoid extensive borehole spalling is still an open issue. In this paper, the Differential Stress Induced Damage (DSID) model is employed to simulate the anisotropic damage distribution around pressurized boreholes drilled in fractured shale. The loading path is purely mechanical: excavation and fluid injection are simulated by stress relaxation followed by pressurization. We investigate the effect of pre-existing fracture orientation, in-situ stress and injection pressure on the propagation of anisotropic damage during pressurization. Finite Element results indicate that (1) damage initiates and develops when the ratio of two in-situ stress component deviates from 1, and the magnitude of damage is proportional to this stress deviation; (2) For a given in-situ stress field, damage initiates for a certain threshold of injection pressure, and the damage zone extends as the injection pressure increases; (3) A pre-existing fracture only affects the damage zone locally; the orientation of that fracture does not affect the damaged zone, which is controlled by in situ stress and injection pressure.INTRODUCTIONHydraulic fracturing is used to increase shale permeability and to enhance hydrocarbon extraction. In order to maximize the extraction ratio and to avoid wellbore spalling and clogging during fluid injection, the parameters related to injection for each particular site need to be optimized. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly understand how shale responses upon excavation and pressurization.It is well known that breakouts grow in the direction of minimum compression and that plastic deformation around wellbores tends to arrest breakouts (Zoback et al., 1985). Laboratory acoustic emission tests revealed that fractures propagate along the direction of maximum compression stress, and fractures (breakouts) are surrounded by the Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ), in which rock properties are weakened by the presence of micro cracks (Eberhardt et al., 1999; Martino et al., 2004). The anisotropy from orientated foliations and cracks may influence the development and propagation of fractures and breakouts (Everitt et al., 2004). Sonic televiewer logs proved that during hydraulic fracturing, fluid injection further alters the stress distribution (Evans et al., 2005). Shale natural fabric strongly affects the evolution of the EDZ around boreholes."

Process-oriented experiments on the use of coal as an adsorbent for certain soluble components of sewage are described. The capacity of Canadian coals for these components was less than 0.1 per cent by weight for the highest concentration at which these components could be expected to be found in domestic sewage. This is much less than values reported in the past. A pronounced selectivity between components was observed. Experiments on bacteria removal in beds of coal, regeneration of spent coal to restore adsorption capacity and COD contributions of coal are reported in the paper. The simple application of coal as an adsorbent does not seem promising.

"The practical determination of optimum stope geometry has, until recently, been an art relying primarily on experience at a given operation. Due to the complex and variable nature of rock masses in situ, stopes are often designed either very conservatively, resulting in excess development, or non-conservative resulting in excessive dilution and, in some cases, in loss of ore reserves.The Geomechanics group of the Mining Technology Division, Centre de Recherche Noranda, uses a combination numerical modelling and empirical design techniques to optimize allowable stope geometries. The above methodology allows the optim ization of stope geometry for varying rockmass classifications within an operation or between different operations. Such techniques require the development of a thorough geotechnical database at each operation and are best used when calibrated to the specific operation through back analysis.This paper discusses the above optimization techniques in light of specific examples from the Noranda Group. The design methods, limitations and results are discussed.INTRODUCTIONMine design has traditionally referred to production planning, general facility layout, (i.e. ore passes, crusher stations, main haulage drifts, etc.) and ventilation design. The dimensioning and sequencing of the stopes and pillars, however, has been almost solely based on trial and error and precedent practice.More recently, numerical stress analysis has received much more attention as part of the design process. It is common now at many operations to look at the effect of proposed stope layouts and sequences on stress redistribution through the surrounding mine workings. Through calibration of actual stope and pillar behaviour in situ, one can then relate the model predictions to support requirements, safety problems, etc."

"The region discussed comprises approximately eight million acres spreading across the Arctic Circle in Yukon and North West Territories.Encouraged by four years of surface geological and geophysical work, which strongly suggested that suit-able conditions existed for the entrapment of oil and gas, a decision was reached to drill. In due course two holes were drilled; Eagle Plains No. 1 drilled to 9589 in 1957-8 and Western Minerals Chance No. 1 spudded in 1959 is being deepened this year.Thick sections of sedimentary rocks occur on both sides of the Richardson Mountains, however, most of our activities have been concentrated to date on the west side in the Eagle Plains basin. Here are found stratigraphic units ranging from Precambrian to Tertiary age. The drilling of the two exploratory wells proved the presence of these strata at depth and have confirmed the presence of promising structures. A geological cross-section across Eagle Plains presents an interpretation of these conditions.Physical and engineering aspects of exploration in the northern Yukon and North West Territories are de-pendent largely upon seasons and transportation. Reconnaissance gravity and surface geologic mapping by air presents no serious problems. However, seismic operations on the ground are greatly affected by the season, presence of permafrost and mobility of equipment.The actual drilling of the hole may well be the simple part of a wildcat undertaking once equipment and supplies are on location. Over-all planning, assembling supplies, transporting equipment and personnel seems to be the real job. Serious consideration must be given to per-ma-frost effect in the drilling pro-gram and on surface installations as well.Programming for -the various exploration activities should be under-taken well in advance of the actual doing. Considerable extra costs may be the results of crash programs. Costs are high, and the rewards uncertain. Economic evaluation is based •on the long term outlook."

The leaching kinetics of a zinc concentrate in autoclave reactors were studied. A sample of concentrate from Bolivia, with typical mineralogical characteristics of the Andes region, was used. A concentrate containing 49% zinc and 145 ppm of silver from Minera Viacha was characterized chemically and mineralogically (atomic absorption, X-ray diffraction, and SEM microscopy) and tested in bench scale reactors. Two types of autoclave batch reactors were used at 40 bars of oxygen pressure and three levels of temperature (150°C, 200°C and 250°C). The solid to solution leaching ratio was 1:10 (10% sulphuric acid concentration). The effect of the particle size of the concentrate on the leaching kinetics was studied (P80: 145 and 45 µm). Iron from the leaching solution was removed by precipitation by increasing the pH in order to generate a clean solution for zinc electrowinning. The zinc solution was used to evaluate the feasibility of cathode production at the laboratory scale. Zinc extractions with higher liberation (P80 = 45 µm) reached up to 98%. Ground concentrate with finer sizes resulted in agglomeration and the use of dispersing agents did not improve slurry mixing. The leaching solution contained 55 g/L zinc and 7 g/L iron; it was purified by precipitating iron. The precipitation was evaluated using sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide. In the first case, a colloidal suspension of ferric salts was formed while in the second case, different iron compounds were precipitated. The precipitate obtained with ammonium hydroxide had better filtering properties. Electrowinning was carried out using two types of cathodes (stainless steel and aluminium) and solutions purified with ammonium hydroxide. Zinc cathodes formed on stainless steel presented a better physical quality than those formed on aluminium.

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. De même, les définitions des trois catégories de ressources et deux catégories de réserves, s’apparent sur la continuité de la géologie et des teneurs et sur les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité. Ce projet offre une voie pour développer les critères de la certification ISO 9001 pour les opérations minières, tout en fournissant un système approprié d’inventaire aux compagnies d’exploration, pour mieux informer les actionnaires et les investisseurs potentiels."

The complex niobium-rare earth pyrochlore-monazite-crandallite ores of the Tomtor deposit, located in the Siberian Arctic, should be considered as a new type of rare metal materials. The major valuable components of the ore are niobium, rare earth elements, yttrium, and scandium; associated components are titanium, vanadium, aluminum, and phosphorus. Because of the irregular distribution of the rare earth metals and niobium according to grain-size, the extremely finely dispersed nature of the minerals and their close interpenetration to each other, ore processing by gravitation and flotation is not successful. The processes studied for the treatment of the Tomtor ores use direct alkaline-acid leaching to open the ore. A problem in the first stage of alkaline leaching is the high aluminum content, which decreases the activity of sodium hydroxide and alkaline-earth metals, which are bound to phosphorus. Ore processing using alkaline-nitrate and alkaline-chloride leaching was proposed and investigated. The first variant was used to obtain rare earth and scandium materials and a niobium-titanium concentrate, which can be a stock material for processors who use chlorination for the processing of ores and concentrates. The second variant is a complex advanced ore processing scheme with electrochemical regeneration of the waste chloride solutions obtaining sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and chloridizing agents. Moreover trisodium phosphate is used for purification of the waste mother liquors from metal cations. The complex salt, NaAlCl4, is proposed as the chloridizing agent for the decomposition of the niobium-titanium concentrate.

"Complex facilities which provide for the collection, management and treatment of effluents emanating from the Sullivan mine and concentrator tailings were made operational in October 1979. Key features of the system are the use of upgraded tailings ponds for the storage of up to 800 million litres of metals-contaminated effluents, a treatment plant employing lime in a high-density sludge process and a sludge-impoundment facility designed for maximum long-term environmental safety. The completed works are capable of satisfying a difficult range of operating requirements imposed by highly variable weather conditions, drainage flows and soluble metals loadings. Final capital expenditures for the project approached $10 million and annual operating costs are about $0.8 million.This paper discusses the Kimberley effluents treatment project and the major considerations in its development. The treatment process, major plant equipment and initial operating experience are also described.IntroductionCominco Ltd. has worked the Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, B.C. since 1909 and has operated a concentrator some 5 km distant from the mine since 1923. Over the last 70 years, in excess of 120million tonnes of ore have been mined, and production continues at an average rate of 6,500 tonnes per day. It is a well-known fact that the contribution of this operation to Canada's mining industry and, in particular, Cominco's development has been significant. However, this success has not been without some undesirable side effects.Unfortunately, the Sullivan is one of only a few major Western Canadian orebodies which may be classed as ""acidic"" in nature. That is, the primary economic minerals, galena and marrnatite, are enclosed in a siliceous host rock with abundant pyrrhotite, but with little or no accompanying alkaline gangue minerals such as calcite and dolomite. The unavoidable consequence of mining such an ore is that contact with air and water generates an acid mine drainage containing various soluble metals orginally present as minerals.This problem also arises in the concentrator's tailings ponds, which, in the case of the Sullivan, are two separate impoundments of different materials. The 1,100 tonnesl day of ""iron"" tailings are primarily pyrrhotite which is surplus to the requirements of a separate operation that produces sulphuric acid as an intermediate to phosphate fertilizers. Inert gangue minerals with only a minor sulphide content are the main constituents of the 1,200 tonnes/ day of siliceous tailings. Corresponding to the relative proportion of sulphides in the solids, the decant from the iron tailings is substantially more contaminated than that from the siliceous pond."
