Biooxidation of a high arsenic-bearing refractory gold ore was investigated to determine the arsenic removal efficiency by the cultured bacteria and to examine the effect of biological pretreatment on subsequent gold cyanidation. The biooxidation pretreatment process utilizes the ability of adapted acidophilic bacteria to oxidize pyrite and arsenopyrite and release the encapsulated gold. The released gold can be efficiently extracted by the subsequent cyanidation process. The biooxidation experiments were conducted with cultured bacteria using various sizes of agitation tanks. Leaching results showed that over 96.26 % arsenic extraction could be obtained from this ore after 6 days of bioleaching with continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Gold extraction during the cyanidation process was increased from 29.35% to 96.71% after biological pretreatment. The content of arsenic in the biooxidation residue was reduced to below 0.3%. "The Nickel/Cobalt operation in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta has successfully used an oxidative ammonia leach process to refine a variety of feeds into high quality nickel and cobalt products for over 60 years. Fundamental changes to the refining process were made when the major feed was converted from nickel concentrate to cobalt rich mixed sulphides in the early 1990s. Since the early 1990s, the production capacity of the refinery has expanded to match increases in both mixed sulphides and other feeds. In addition to increasing the production capacity of the refinery, other changes have been required in order to improve the operability and reliability of the refinery as well as to deal with increasingly stringent safety and environmental requirements. This paper describes recent changes at the refinery including changes to the flow sheet, improvements in unit operations, incorporation of new feeds, management of byproducts, and control of impurities.INTRODUCTION The Cobalt Refinery Company (Corefco) plant in Fort Saskatchewan processes nickel-cobalt mixed sulphide intermediate produced at the lateritic nickel mine and high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) facility in Moa Bay, Cuba. Both operations are jointly owned and operated by Sherritt International and General Niquel of Cuba. The mixed sulphide, along with other feed materials, is processed at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery using a pressure ammonia leach-hydrogen reduction process to produce nickel and cobalt metal. This refinery was originally constructed in 1954 to treat nickel concentrate from Sherritt’s Lynn Lake mine in Manitoba. (Benson and Colvin, 1964; Boldt and Queneau, 1967; Forward, 1953; Forward and Mackiw, 1955; Kerfoot, 1989) From the mid-1970s until the early-1990s, the facility operated as an independent refinery, treating nickel-bearing feeds from around the world. The flowsheet was changed in 1992 to address the increased cobalt content of the feed. (Cordingley and Krentz, 2005; Kerfoot and Cordingley, 1997) The flowsheet was adapted further in 2009 to improve cobalt speciation in the leach process, which allows better cobalt-nickel separation. The 2009 iteration is shown in Figure 1. Three ammonia leach stages were used to ensure high recoveries of nickel and cobalt. Underflow solids from the final leach stage contained mainly iron oxides. One of the features of the leach process is the innovative recycling of ammonia. Ammonia vented from the leach process in tail gas and from atmospheric tanks is recovered and recycled into the refinery using water based scrubbers and a high pressure distillation process. Indeed, roughly 250 t NH3/d is recovered as distillate and recycled back into the process. Also, air enriched with ammonia which is vented from the later first stage autoclaves is recycled to the lead first stage autoclaves to maximize oxygen and ammonia utilization."

The present study was carried out to have a better understanding of permeability for greater velocity ranges, An equipment was designed and built for this purpose, Pressure drop measurements were made across the thickness of open-cell nickel foams, Pore and window sizes were measured by image analysis on SEM micrographs, The experimental results are in relatively good agreement with the Hazen-Dupuit-Darcy model (R2>98%), The permeability is affected by pore size, porosity and the normalized projected area of the connecting pores (ie. windows).

So much so that, certainly, no .discussion on metallurgy can be complete without including some reference to it.Obviously, one paper cannot hope to cover in detail the relationship of the whole science of metallurgy to the mining industry. The ASTM B108 Mould and a Modified Mould were used to cast test bars under a variety of conditions: mould and pouring temperatures, mould coating and tilt. Mechanical properties were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The ASTM Mould is less sensitive to casting variables. Enlarging the gating system and adding additional gates to the ASTM mould can improve properties in the tilt position. The reproducibility of properties in as-cast and T6 heat treated bars was investigated.

"This paper reviews the history of modern iron-control processes in hydrometallurgy. Attention is paid to processes developed in the electrolytic zinc industry for removal of iron from zinc sulfate leach liquors and the problems faced by the industry in the safe disposal of the iron residues produced by these processes. Past lessons learned are projected onto current efforts to develop hydrometallurgical processes for treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. It is argued that any attempt to create a “hydrometallurgical copper smelter” will fail, unless methods are developed that can recover iron in a form that can be directly used by the steel or pigment industries.RÉSUMÉ Cet article passe en revue l’histoire des procédés modernes de contrôle du fer en hydrométallurgie. Il accordera une attention particulière aux procédés développés dans l’industrie du zinc électrolytique pour l’élimination du fer dans les liqueurs lixiviantes de sulfate de zinc anhydre, ainsi qu’aux problèmes rencontrés par l’industrie en termes d’élimination sans danger des résidus ferreux générés par ces procédés. That this particular IMPC was to include the 4th Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy, a conference series held only every 10 years, made the invitation even more appealing and appropriate. This was because I had been co-chairman of the First Symposium on Iron Control, together with my erstwhile colleague, John Dutrizac, which was held 30 years ago in Toronto."

En 1995 la compagnie NIOCAN inc. fut incorporée; ses actions furent inscrites à la bourse de Montréal en 1997, et à la bourse de Toronto en décembre 1999. Jusqu?à maintenant, NIOCAN a investi plus de 7 millions de dollars dans le développement de sa propriété minière de niobium située à quelques 40 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Montréal. Le haut rendement économique des deux gisements principaux que compte exploiter la compagnie, le S-60 et le HWM-2, a été établie par des études de faisabilité effectuées par le consortium Met-Chem/SNC-Lavalin. La mission que s?est donnée NIOCAN inc. consiste à mettre en production ses deux gisements et à devenir ainsi productrice de ferroniobium dans les plus brefs délais. An alternative method for dewatering slurry (tailings) is the use of geocontainers (MacTubes). The practical application of this work was carried out in the concentrator plant of the Raura Mining Company, located in the occidental mountain between Huánuco and Lima in Peru?s central highland. For the development of the research, the MATLAB R2012a software MGeST (v. 1.0) was used (Slurry Geocontainer Maccaferri Treatment). MGeST is used for sizing MacTubes, which allows determination of the most important design parameters, such as height (H), filling residual pressure (P1O ), strength of geosynthetic (T), and dehydration height. Compared with GeoCoPS v. 3.0, there is a maximum difference of 3% between the results obtained. The tailing to be treated in the MacTube have a specific weight of 11.62 kN/m3. After several tests it was determined that a MacTube of an apparent opening size of 0.22 mm was required for this specific weight.

"Buried, possibly mineralized granite cupolas at the Silsilah tin deposit in Saudi Arabia (lat. 26°06' N, long. 42°40' E) have been successfully located using a closely spaced electric-field-ratio profiling technique. In this study, electrical fields at 27 and 270 Hz across grounded electrodes spaced 50 m apart were measured along six traverses. This method is interpretable by inspection, unlike the dipole-dipole technique, which requires mathematical modeling for interpretation.In the study area, the technique allowed the authors to identify and distinguish among unroofed granite cupolas, cupolas with their aplite-pegmatite apical contact zones intact, strong (quartz-rich) and weak (relatively quartz-poor) greisens, dikes, faults, and pervasively argillized rocks.This method should be useful in the valuation of other shallow mineral prospects in similar settings in other parts of the world, especially deposits for which the location of vertical contrasts is important, such as veins or mineralized zones associated with the apexes of small igneous cupolas."

"In 2010, the Eurocode for Geotechnical Design, EN-1997-1:2004 (CEN, 2004), informally known as Eurocode 7 or EC7, became the Reference Design Code (RDC) for geotechnical design – including rock engineering design – within the European Union (EU). EC7 is one standard within the comprehensive Structural Eurocode suite, which as a whole has been also adopted by a number of other countries beyond the EU. EC7 is thus becoming a key design standard for geotechnical engineering worldwide.As part of the Structural Eurocode suite, EC7 requires designs to adhere to the principles of Limit State Design. However, it is not clear that current rock engineering design practice can satisfy this requirement. In addition, evidence is accumulating that EC7 is currently difficult to apply to, and may even be inappropriate for, rock engineering design. These issues may be due to the fact that the development of EC7 to date took place without any formal input from the international rock mechanics and rock engineering community.In early 2011 under the auspices of CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation / European Committee for Standardisation), EC7 entered a formal period of maintenance which was aimed at improving the applicability and ease-of-use of the Code. This maintenance cycle will conclude in 2020 with the publication of a revised version of EC7.This paper describes a number of critical aspects for rock engineering in the context of EC7, inparticular the following:– the history of the Structural Eurocodes and the concepts they embody;– the nature of Limit State Design and the challenges and opportunities it poses for rock engineering design;– the formal means by which the Structural Eurocode maintenance cycle proceeds;– the plans currently being developed for improving EC7 with regard to rock engineering design and construction;– the unique and vital opportunity for the entire international rock mechanics and rock engineering community to comment on the Code and make suggestions for its improvement."

The geochemical interpretation of results of statistical analysis of published multi-element stream sediment data from southwest and northern New Brunswick is presented. Element concentrations in southwest New Brunswick are low and comparable to element concentrations in background areas in northern New Brunswick. Deposits of copper and nickel are indicated in southwest New Brunswick. Anomalous element concentrations occur in several areas in northern New Brunswick and the elements most commonly associated with these anomalies are Cu, Pb, Zn, As and Ag; and also Mo, Wand Sb. Bedrock geology greatly influences element concentrations and may cause false anomalies. Manganese has a pronounced effect on the dispersion patterns of Co and also Zn, Mo, Pb, As, Ba and Ni. Nickel and Cr are strongly sympathetically related and this association is independent of bedrock type.

Efficient separation of minerals is the essence of mineral processing. Separation of hexagonal pyrrhotite in processing of Ni-Cu sulphide ores was investigated together with particle size effects with respect to selective flotation recovery of pentlandite and nickel. The recovery by size response was compared for sodium metabisulphite (SMBS), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and their combinations with amyl xanthate as a collector. The pyrrhotite recovery for all sizes was lower than that of pentlandite for the blank case as well as individual cases with SMBS and TETA. For pyrrhotite, the recovery by size relations in the case of individual uses of reagents were mainly determined by recovery losses at coarser size range (>74 um), which occurs at a coarser size for pentlandite (>212 um). The combined use of SMBS and TETA, and the associated synergistic effect very significantly knocked down the pyrrhotite recovery to less than 7% that was a maximum for the –10 um (attributable to hydraulic entrainment). High recovery of pentlandite in a wide range of intermediate sizes and drastically low recovery of pyrrhotite resulted in a very efficient separation of pentlandite from pyrrhotite in all sizes. Separation of this mineral is discussed in relation to fundamental functionality of the reagents used.

"Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations in Falconbridge, Ontario, has been in operation since 1930. Many new technologies and practices, now common in the industry, have been implemented at the site and contribute significantly to the industry’s understanding. Since the last update on the Smelter operation published at the NiCo 2005 conference, the Converter Aisle has undergone significant changes in the operation of vessels. The Aisle continues to consist of 4 Peirce-Smith converters, but the Slag-Make Converter, and the Slag Cleaning Vessel have been re-tooled or re-built as Hybrid Vessels (HV), each generating matte for the two Finishing Converters and clean slag for disposal. The complicated scheduling and the overall benefits to the Smelter are reviewed here as part of the on-going tradition of industry support.INTRODUCTION The Glencore Nickel Sudbury Smelter operates a Roast Reduction Smelting (RRS) flow sheet with a specialized Converter Aisle operation that maximizes metal recovery to Bessemer matte. The main process equipment consists of a pair of Fluid Bed Roasters, a submerged-arc Electric Furnace and four Peirce-Smith converting type vessels (Figure 1). In the RRS flow sheet, concentrate is roasted with air to remove sulphur as SO2. Calcine from the Roasters is mixed with petroleum coke upon addition to the six-in-line rectangular Electric Furnace. The coke back reduces the metallic oxides, producing a matte and a discard slag.Gases from the Roasters are sent to a single pass absorption Acid Plant where the SO2 is converted to acid. Under the previous operating targets, approximately 70–75% of the sulphur in the incoming concentrate was fixed as acid with the balance going to the Electric Furnace in calcine for Bessemer matte production. Off-gases from the Electric Furnace and Converters are combined in a balloon flue, treated for particulates in electrostatic precipitators and discharged to the Smelter stack without any SO2 fixation."

RIGHT NOW the Canadian oil business is suffering from growing pains brought on by developments outside our borders. I would like, therefore, to place our industry in perspective for you in two ways. I would like first to describe it briefly and let you see it in relation to the world oil industry. Then I would like to bring it back and place it into perspective against a strictly Canadian background. Naturally, in such a discussion, it is necessary to use a certain amount of statistical material. I'll endeavour, however, to keep it to a minimum. Eleven years ago, before the discovery of Leduc, Alberta could boast of having 21,000,000 barrels of crude oil reserves. Five years ago we had 1,810,000,000 barrels. At year end, 1957, our remaining recoverable reserves totalled more than 3,000,000,000 barrels. In 1957, our potential production in Alberta reached an all-time high of 756,000 barrels a day. Unfortunately, our actual average daily production dropped from 393,000 barrels per day in 1956 to 376,000 barrels per day in 1957. And in 1958, to date, it has dropped sharply to around 300,000 barrels per day.

The friendly and efficient co-operation of the officials of the Bureau. is the foundation upon which it has been my privilege to rely in the preparation of this and two earlier papers ( 1). My thanks are due also to our own staff on the Dominion Coal Board, who spared neither time nor effort in helping to prepare this paper.STATISTICS are comparatively dull and, to many people, coal statistics are duller than most. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. It is for this reason that, for the third successive year, a factual survey of the coal position is being presented.In the previous papers (1) explanations have been given of the basic considerations in the preparation of these reports and some special phases of the overall picture have been examined. For these explanations, the earlier papers may be consulted."

"The adsorption of dehydroabietylamine acetate on quartz, hematite, rutile and baddeleyite has been deter-mined for concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 5,600 µ. moles/I and for pH values ranging from 2.5 to 10.5.The surface tension, UV and IR spectra, equivalent conductance and ion concentrations for dehydroabiety lamine acetate solutions have been determined.Contact-angle and flotability studies have established that good collection may be obtained with this amine but that selectivity depends on the suitable use of depressants for some of the minerals."

As a branch of Operations Research, decision making is a widely used application in both science and social sciences. There are many different methods developed to solve decision making problems in the literature. In this study, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is performed for the selection of reclamation project selection in an open pit mine and the optimal solution of the problem is investigated. Different reclamation project alternatives are prepared for an open pit mine, which continues to its production activities in magnesite sector in Turkey. The data obtained from Magnesite Cooperation is used in the application of the method. A decision-making process is prepared as considering the project alternatives for the purpose of selecting the most suitable reclamation project. The entire criteria that affect the decision-making process are identified and transformed into a hierarchical structure. The problem is solved by using Fuzzy AHP method developed according to this structure. It is found that Fuzzy AHP is a method that may help decision-makers in solving different decision-making problems in mining.

Cupreous pyrite deposits in Cyprus have many geologic similarities to Canadian massive sulphide copper-zinc ores as well as certain significant differences. A comparison of the Cyprus and Canadian deposits indicates a complex genetic history for the latter and suggests that their origin should be re-examined. The Cyprus ores occur in subaqueous extrusive rocks near and at the top of a Cretaceous volcanic pile or igneous complex. The rocks have not been deformed, nor have they been deeply buried or deeply eroded. Apparently the ores formed near or at surface in the top of the volcanic pile by a volcanic-exhalative process and from an ore-fluid of volcanic derivation. The Canadian deposits are of comparable composition and have similar geologic set-tings, but occur in the most ancient Precambrian rocks. Their enclosing Keewatin greenstones have, in most places, been deformed, regionally metamorphosed and invaded by granitic intrusions. Comparison suggests that the Canadian ores also formed initially near surface in ancient Keewatin volcanic complexes by a syngenetic, volcanic-exhalative process. Subsequently, during orogenesis, they were deformed, remobilized under conditions of elevated pressure-temperature and re-emplaced as epigenetic bodies into

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut.
