The Finisterre Range on the north coast of Papua New Guinea is the uplifted forearc riagio.n. of a modern arc-continent collision. The core of the range is composed of the P- nisterre Volcanics, an Oligocene''-arc terrane. The southern flank of the range consists of a clastic sedimentary sequence which is an uplifted accretionary wedge and collision complex. This clastic sequence can be subdivided into three distinct units. To the south of aiid structurally below the Finisterre Valcanics are the Mebu beds, an Oligocene- $arly Miocene sequence of volcanolithic turbidites. The Erap Structural Complex is south of, and structurally below the Mebu 43eds. , It consists of three subunits; the 3rly Pliocene micaceous turbidites of the Sukurum unit, contemporaneous pillow basalts AF{ the Basalt unit, and Late Pliocene to Pleistocene volcanolithic turbidites of the -Nariawang unit. The Quaternary Leron Formation, a fluvial to shallow marine 'clastic unit, is the southernmdst. and structurally lowest unit of the clastic -sequence The Finisterre Range is dominated by a fold-and-thrust belt with most thrusts "dipping steeply N. Melange fabric _ is developed in the vicinity of major thrusts. "ffle thrust belt strikes NW, oblique to the regional convergence direction, but no strike-slip motion is observed along NW striking faults.

Approximately 420 VertiMills« (VTM) have been installed in mineral processing plants throughout the world, mainly in tertiary and regrind applications plus several in secondary grinding duties. Metso Minerals (Metso) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) have commenced a collaborative research program in stirred milling technology focusing on mill performance evaluation, model development and scale-up methodology. Industrial VTMs are being assessed using a consistent circuit survey protocol to evaluate the performance of VTMs in comminution circuits. The survey protocol includes identification and modification of sampling points, appropriate sampling techniques, controlled circuit stability, and best sample analysis practice. To initiate this study four surveys were conducted in the tertiary grind circuit in the Ridgeway Concentrator at Cadia Valley Operations (CVO) that treats the full circuit throughput of over 800 tph. To deal with the high feed rate the site opted to lead the world in the application of stirred mills by installing the largest VTM, at 3000 hp (2240kW) in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone bank. On average the operating work index was 13.1 kWh/t, reducing the secondary grind product by 40 - 50 ¦m to the required 80 to 100 ¦m range. The applied specific energy is relatively low in these low-intensity stirred media mills at 2.7 kWh/t. The size specific energy was 24.2 kWh/t-75¦m. At last year's. annual meeting of The Institute, Sir George Fisher, as President, compared it somewhat nostalgically with a meeting of its kind in the 1920s when comment was expressed on the decline of Australianmining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries.I feel that tonight's annual meeting is even more an occasion for nostalgia, for it represents the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. I hope, therefore, that I may be allowed to retrace some of the circumstances of this Institute's origin and at the same time to look at some of the broader happenings of those 75 years.From this distance in time it is, of course, much easier to get things in perspective and one of the things that compels enormous admiration in looking back over the history of our Institute is to note the qualities of foresight and keen concern for professional standards which moved the pioneers in this Institute. They had no benefit of hindsight to aid them.Just over 75 years ago, a small group of men met in Broken Hill to discus.s the possibilities of forming an association of mining engineers. The moving spirit was Uriah Dudley, our first secretary, manager of the Umberumberka mine at Silverton. The first formal move to form an association of mining engineers came from the Amalgamated Mining Managers Association of Australasia. At the time, this association was a fairly new group, being 5 years old.It had been formed to try to raise the standard of management throughout the industry. Uriah Dudley and our first provisional president, John Howell, held their first talks in 1891 and further meetings at Broken Hill followed. The inaugural meeting, attended by 200 members, was held in Adelaide in April, 1893.

An experimental study of the soil mechanics of brown coal showed that brown coal consolidates in the same manner as does a clay and that the theory of consolidation for soils may be applied to brown coals. Moisture content is a function of the coal type, the existing effective stress, and the stress history of the coal.The effective stress in a brown coal seam is a function of the overburden pressure, the pore stress and tectonic stresses. Stress history may be deduced from geological evidence and determined by consolidation tests. Application of these principles to the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley shows that the distributions of natural moisture contents are consistent with consolidation.INTRODUCTIONThe nature and geology of the brown coals of Victoria, particularly of the Latrobe Valley, were discussed in some detail by Edwards (1945, 1948), Thomas and Baragwanath (1949) and Gloe (1960). A salient feature of these studies was the distribution of moisture contents in the brown coal seams. Recent experimental work, part of a soil mechanics study of the structure and strength of brown coal, showed that moisture content variation is a reflection of consolidation phenomena in brown coal and application of the results to .field condItions verified and modified the conclusions of Edwards in his pioneer work. This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The Roa Opencast Coal Mine is situated at the north-eastern end of the Greymouth Coalfield. It lies on an eastern flank of the Paparoa Range, 16 km north-east of the town of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. Road access is via a sealed road from Blackball to Roa, then by a 5.3 km all weather, gravel road, which gains 340 m in elevation from 190 m RL at Roa to a maximum height of 530 m near the opencast.

Human-caused global warming has become the environmental cause celebre of the early 21st century. The strong warming alarmist camp currently includes the United Nations, most Western governments, most of the free press, many large corporations (including Enron, before it failed), the major churches, most scientific organisations and a large portion of general public opinion. This phalanx of support notwithstanding there is no scientific consensus as to the danger of human-induced climate change. There is, therefore, a strong conflict between the level of public alarm and its scientific justification. How can this be? In a democracy, the media serve to convey to the public the facts and hypotheses of climate change as provided by individual scientists, governmental and international research agencies, and NGO and other lobby groups. In general, the media have promulgated an alarmist cause for climate change; they have certainly failed to convey the degree of uncertainty that is characteristic of climate science, or a balanced summary of the many essential facts that are relevant to human causation. Climate change is as much a geological as it is a meteorological issue. Natural climate changes, both warmings and coolings, are indeed a societal hazard. We usually deal with geological hazards by providing civil defence authorities and the public with accurate, evidence-based, general information about events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods, and then by adapting to the effects when a damaging event occurs. As for other major natural disasters, the appropriate preparation for extreme climate events is to mitigate and manage the negative effects when they occur, and especially so for dangerous coolings. Attempting instead to æstop climate changeÆ by reducing human carbon dioxide emissions is a costly exercise of utter futility. Rational climate policies must be based on adaptation to dangerous change as and when it occurs, and irrespective of its sign or causation. The issue now is no longer climate change as such, the reality of which will always be with us. Rather, the issues are, first, the failure of the free press to inform the public about the true facts of human-caused climate change and of the dangers posed by natural climate change. And, second, the vested interests held by many of the groups of warming alarmists. These interests include not only the obvious commercial ones, but also the many scientists and science managers who have discounted or remained silent about the huge uncertainties of the human-caused global warming hypothesis because it suited them to do so. Public opinion will soon demand an explanation as to why experienced editors and hardened investigative journalists, worldwide, have melted before the blowtorch of self-induced guilt, political correctness and special interest expediency that marks the sophisms of global warming alarmists.

The tracking of ore through process hold-ups such as stockpiles has been traditionally been difficult to achieve. The inability to pinpoint the exact source in the mine of material that is feeding a processing plant has led to inefficient mine-mill reconciliation processes. In addition, a lack of understanding of the behaviour of ore in process hold-ups such as bins and stockpiles often leads to poor predictions of plant performance and to poor reconciliation of this to the orebody.This paper reports on two short case studies. One case study addresses tracking ore from various parts of two mines to the concentrator. The other follows synthetic particles through the coarse ore stockpile. Both studies use radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracer technology. The paper concludes by discussing general strategies for implementation of such concepts into mine-mill metal accounting and reconciliation systems. As shown in this paper, reliable ore tracking systems will allow much more effective mine-mill reconciliations as well as the ability to model process hold-ups with regard to size by residence time distributions. This should, in turn, allow metallurgists to have a better understanding of the size and grade of material that will report to the plant at different process hold-up (eg stockpile) conditions.

The contract initially involved specialty mechanical, electrical and instrumentation maintenance and has developed to encompass maintenance planning and plant control systems.The integrated partnership has delivered excellent results in the areas of improved availability, reliability and return on investment. The operation is now amongst the industry leaders in plant availability.The integrated maintenance service has delivered: An increase in plant availability from 93%, in the first year, to 96.5% today, generating approximately $50 million additional income per year, Quality work procedures, Process and equipment improvements, Major shutdown planning involving more than 700 personnel, 6000 parts and over 2 000 discrete activities.The ongoing success of the partnership requires a high level of understanding between both companies. A commitment to maintain a long term sustainable relationship, based on a ""win - win"" culture, is the key to this success. Kinetic Study on the Leaching of Vanadium from LD Converter Slag Using Sulfuric Acid In order to reduce the environmental impact due to land disposal of LD (Linz-Donawitz) converter slag from steelmaking plant and to valorise this waste material, an acid leaching study was carried out to assess the effect of several parameters on the kinetics of vanadium dissolution. The characterisation and morphology of the feed investigated using XRD, XRF. The factors influencing leaching vanadium such as particle size, temperature, slurry density and the concentration of sulfuric acid were investigated and optimised. The maximum vanadium recovery about 95 per cent achieved at 70¦C, S/L: 1/15, acid concentration: 3M and for 150 minutes of leaching time. The dissolution of vanadium in sulfuric acid shows that there are two stages in the kinetics of leaching. At the first 15 minutes, there is a sharp increase in the amount of vanadium extracted and at longer leaching time, the extraction increase slightly. In the present work, the shrinking core model (SCM) was used to describe the acid leaching of vanadium compounds. A summary of the controlling regimes in the SCM are examined below for short time (less than 12 min.) and long time (more than 30 min.) stages. So, it was found that the kinetics of leaching in both stages is controlled by solid product diffusion regime.

In recent years it has been more and more recognised that applied geology can be of service to the mining industry, and many mining companies overseas now have permanent geological staff as part of the operating organisation.Most of these companies insist that the geological department must pay for itself by the savings it can make in operating cost, and the growing use of the geologist is proof that such savings are made.The geological problems in every district are different, and a description of the problems and method of attack in a specified district is a useful addition to the literature of mining geology. Very few contributions, from the standpoint of the mining company geologist, have appeared in the Australian literature so that, although the operations of Bendigo Mines Limited are still in the development stage, and its geological work newly established, a description of the routine geological work at Bendigo should beof interest.Although most Bendigo mining companies have not employed permanent geologists, they have utilised geological guidance wherever possible, and a great body of data has grown up. Acknowledgment is made here to the valuable work of the Geological Survey of Victoria, especially the writings of E. J. Dunn, H. Herman, and H. S. Whitelaw, and the maps of Caleb Thomas and H. S. Owing to other, urgent developments, it has not been possible to proceed with that programme.1. THE PROCESSING OF A TANTALITE ORE(a) The OreThe minerals in which tantalum and columbium most commonly occur are tantalite and columbite. These two minerals are the end members of an isomorphous series of tantalates and columbates of iron and manganese, but in nature the series grade into each other.Some of the best deposits of tantalum and columbium ores in the world occur in the north-west of Australia. Until recently tantalite low in columbium was the only mine~al in demand but discoveries of extended uses for columbium, e.g., addition of ferro-columbium to high chromium I steels inhibits intergranular corrosion (weld decay), have created a demand for columbite low in tantalum as weB. Both of these types of' ore occur in the Pilbara district in Western Australia and most of the ore mined is exported to America after a preliminary grinding and concentration by gravity.A sample from the Bynoe Harbour locality, west of Darwin, was used in this investigation. Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

Exploration work at the southern flank of the Mt. Coffin diapir has encountered three different types of copper ores: copper carbonate, largely malachite; secondary sulphides, mainly chalcocite replacing pyrite; and a primary arsenopyrite-tennantite-tetrahedrite-chalcopyrite association. The secondary copper ore is occasionally stratiform but mainly erratic at the contact between tillites and siltstones of the Tapley Hill formation.There have been two stages of primary mineralization.1. Arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite occur in siderite veins.2. Revival of the diapirism has caused fracturing and local brecciation of the rimrock and subsequently ascending solutions precipitated chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite also partly replaced arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite.

In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31° to 37° and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Computer applications are ideally suited to the day to day operations of grade control and short term planning on a mine site. By refining this part of the operation there is scope to increase profits by more accurately predicting ore grade and tonnage, and allowing the mining engineer more flexibility in his approach to scheduling. Large numbers of blasthole or ditchwitch samples need to be processed in a fast and efficient manner, and stored in a database for future reference. The mining engineer has to calculate tonnages and subdivide the blast or digging area into mineable areas of waste, low and high grade ore. New grade and tonnage information must be used by the mining engineer to update his short term plan. Answers must be obtained quickly and efficiently, but a high level of individual input is necessary in order that maximum use is made of the information. Geostatistical analysis of samples can be used to refine the interpolation techniques. Reconciliation between the original grade model, the newly sampled area, and the final product should be monitored continually.

The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building. THE following short paper on the Blair Athol coal-field will no doubt have a twofold interest to members from the fact that its main seam, known as the "Big Seam" of a maximum thickness of 91 ft without a band, is unique, being probably the thickestseam of high-grade clean coal yet known, and also because of the interesting problem it presents the colliery engineer-viz., which system of mining is the best to secure the highest economical extraction.Location - Blair Athol is a mining township in Central Queensland, situated at an altitude of about 1100 ft. above sea-level at the end of a branch railway line 74, miles from Emerald, on the Main Central Western line, and 240 miles by rail from Rockhampton.Geology - The coal-measures appear to lie in a shallow basin of about four or five square miles in area, surrounded on all sides by slates and schists, which are overlaid oh three sides by alluvial deposits of up to 150 ft. in thickness, and on the fourth by a thick basalt bed, as yet unproved, some miles beyond which the auriferous slates outcrop. These alluvial deposits have been largely worked in years past and gave high gold returns, the chief diggings being Clermont and Macdonald's Flats in the south, the Springs and Black Ridge in the north-east, and Yankee Creek and others on the west. The surface of the coal-fields may be described as unbroken, but undulating, with gentle southerly dip, the watercourses opening out into wide flats. Solvent extraction has recently been introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice for the production of a high grade uranium concentrate from El Sherana ore by a sulphuric acid leach and solvent extraction process. The solvent is a 5 per cent solution of tri(iso-octyl)amine in kerosene modified with 4 per cent of a long chain alcohol. The stripping reagent is a molar solution of sodium chloride.Preliminary testing for the development of the process showed that the leach liquor was quite amenable to the solvent extraction process and that the equilibrium and rate considerations of both the extraction and stripping steps were very favourable.The industrial plant contains four stages of extraction, three stages of chloride stripping and one stage of secondary carbonate stripping. An internal type of mixer-settler is used for the stagewise contact, the design being based on tests with model equipment.The performance and control of the industrial plant is satisfactory; 99·7 per cent of the uranium is recovered for a loss of 0·3 gallons of kerosene and 0· 4 pounds of amine per 1,000 gallons of liquor treated.INTRODUCTIONThe processing of El Sherana uranium ore from the South Alligator River valley commenced in April, 1959, and thereby introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice the unit operation of solvent extraction on an industrial scale. Although there are now some twelve mineral processing plants in the United States and Canada using solvent extraction, its application to the field of primary hydrometallurgy is quite new. Prior to 1956 none of these twelve plants was operating and hydrometallurgical application waslimited to the refining of comparatively high grade uranium compounds and fission products from nitrate and nitric acid solutions.
