Three decades ago mining companies, principally in North America, aided by machine and explosive manufacturers, started significant attempts to develop and implement automated mining systems, mainly underground. These tended to be motivated by decreasing cost, increasing productivity, reducing labour requirements, and improving safety. These are important business drivers, however, little attention was given to the underlying goal of mining automation, namely to bring upstream processes in control and reducing variation, as seen in downstream mineral processing plants.This paper first reviews the nature of Lean Thinking and its application in the context of the growing commitments by industry to develop future automated mine production systems. The paper then makes reference to prior and current experiences in open pit blasthole drill and shovel performance monitoring, to demonstrate the principle that machine performance data offers as a means, not only to characterise the dynamic geological and working environment, but also to provide a foundation for automation. In this case, drill and shovel monitoring was originally motivated as a means to optimise blast fragmentation through more effective drill and blast designs that are based on an accurate determination of the bench geological and geotechnical characteristics, hence managing variation in the drilling and blasting process. This paper considers how automating and integrating such components of the mine production system would bring processes into a controlled state, creating value at the face, within a framework of Lean mining.

The rocks of Waihi and the surrounding district are almost entirely rhyolitic and ande5itic in character. Sedimentary rocks, with the exception of some surface deposits of clay loosely compacted conglomerate, etc., and one or two thin and broken beds of a very poor lignite, occasionally changed by igneous agencies into a bituminous coal, are almost absent. In the shafts sunk by the Waihi and Grand Junction companies outside the outcropping andesitic area of the Martha Hill, more than one old surface or lake bottom has been passed through. At these points layers of sand, consolidated volcanic mud and tuff, accompanied by numerous broken fragments of imperfectly silicified wood have been enccuntered, but these occurrences may, for the purpose of this paper, be neglected.The youngest rock of the district are rhyolites, probably of Pliocene age. At least three distinct classes of rhyolitic lava, each possessing features of unusual interest, may be made out. None of these, however, is gold-bearing. The youngest flow, a light-coloured, fine-grained rock, is remarkable owing to its enclosing at times fragments of carbonised wood, varying in size from mere specks up to quite large pieces of almost pure charcoal. A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is being increasingly considered as an alternative to traditional truck-shovel mining methods. The move towards IPCC is driven by a number of factors including the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the availability of skilled labour and the need to increase extraction rates to levels that present significant challenges to traditional methods.When considering the relative performance of IPCC and truck-shovel methods, the outcome can be inadvertently impacted by either the use of different simulation approaches, or techniques that do not adequately model the processes in sufficient detail.A simulation approach is proposed that models both IPCC and truck-shovel using the same software platform and is capable of functioning at a wide range of resolutions from life-of-mine scale through to second-by-second asset tracking level. The simulation framework also holds models of processing equipment and hence the mining simulations can be extended to gauge the impact on downstream plant.The approach, known as mine-process operational simulation (MPOS), can be tailored to the level of information available and hence the type of study required, ie order of magnitude, prefeasibility, feasibility, or detailed design.Using information from block models and a range of detailed equipment and process models, MPOS can span major system discontinuities, typified by the mine-plant interface, to allow the estimation of final mine and plant product specifications.

Low-enthalpy geothermal groundwater resources occur at relatively shallow depths in the Upper Cretaceous/1'ertiary sedimentary sequence in the on-shore Gippsland Basin. The main stratigraphic unit containing hot groundwater is the Latrobe Group. Groundwater temperatures in the range 30 to 70¦C have been recorded from depths between 500 and 1000 m. The hottest groundwater is in the Latrobe Valley and Lake Wellington depressions. Geothermal gradients in these areas range from less than 2¦C/100 m to over 10¦C/100 m (compared to a world average of about 3¦C/100 m). A number of theories have been advanced to explain the geothermal anomalies including exothermic reaction such as oxidation of coal, mixing with deeper, hotter groundwater and high geothermal fluxes along fault zones. Variations in geothermal gradients can also result from type and thickness (and hence thermal conductivities) of the sedimentary pile, depth to consolidated basement rocks, and influence of groundwater flow patterns including proximity to recharge zones. The hot groundwater in the Gippsland Basin has substantial potential as a source of energy for direct heat applications such as process heating, space and water heating for buildings, and agricultural and aquaculture. Geothermal energy has a number of environmental advantages over traditional sources of energy. It is clean, safe, causes minimal land disturbances and in most cases is naturally renewable.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

Leaching column techniques and microbiological methods have been described in detail in Madgwick and Ralph (1980) and Madgwick, Ralph and Sadler (1981).Sixty-nine kilograms of copper porphyry ore (0.4 per cent Cu, 2.7 per cent Fe) (particle size 2.4-11.2 mm; 60 The effect of sodium chloride (O.6M) irrigation on bacterial leaching of Bougainville copper porphyry ore was studied.Viability of suspended Thiobacillus ferrooxidants was reduced to less than 10 cells/ml in NaCI (O.6M) compared with 10' eells/ml in dilute II,SO, (0.01 M, pll 2). Salt irrigation had no significant effect on heterotrophic and sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Increascd short term recovery of copper (145 g/tonne/ 15 days) was followed by a marked decrease in tenors to less than 20 mg/litre/day compared with an acid leach, steady release, of 110 mg/litre/day. Resumption of acid leaching restored average solution copper to 46 mg/litre/day and the viability of suspended T Ierrooxidates to 10 cells/ml.Quantitative removal of sodium ehloride from ore particles was difficult and t races of NaCI remained for more than 200 days.

State ownership of mineral in the ground is not newthe Regalian Right is an ancient concept. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations. The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

The social license to operate (SLO) began as a metaphor for the ability of communities to stop mining projects. Soon people began to speak of levels of social license and the ability of communities to raise costs without completely stopping exploration or mining activities. Today the concept has spread to other industries and is evolving towards becoming a general management perspective on the socio-political rights and responsibilities of the corporation. The business case underpinning the SLO perspective on management is the need to assess and manage socio-political risk. For mining companies, socio-political risk has been steadily rising for several reasons, including the efforts of non-government organisations (NGOs) to pre-empt government policy options; the entry of mining companies into jurisdictions weak in the rule of law; and the weakness of global economic and financial regulation. In this perilous world beyond the comfort zone of effective government, mining companies must build their own socio-political stability by engaging directly with stakeholders to develop a strong SLO. In order to become a practical management perspective, the SLO needs to be measurable, which amounts to measuring the socio-political risks and opportunities presented by stakeholders. We present the results of efforts since 2009 to develop a globally reliable and valid measurement tool at the project and industry levels, validated in studies in Australia, Bolivia, Mexico and the USA. A factor analysis suggested four factors that mine management can address to raise their SLO level. The most chronically neglected factor involves the political right of the corporation to foster more equitable social contracts locally and regionally in both developed and developing countries. Microaerobic biodegradation oflow-grade manganese dioxide slurry tailings was demonstrated in enrichment cultures treated with dilute molasses at 30°C and pH 5·8. Supplementary nitrogenous nutrients, yeast extract addition and pH adjustment were not required.Continuously stirred, air-limited reactors were superior to still intermittently agitated cultures, in that, at 5 per cent (w/v) MnOz tailings and 5 per cent (w/v) molasses, the yield of 0.12 g Mn++/g molasses, the rate ofleaching of 1·06 g Mn++/l/d and a recovery of Mn++ of 58 percent from MnOz were 2·8 times, 1·7 times and 1·9 times greater, respectively. The best compromise in yield (0·45 g Mn++/g molasses) and rate ofdissolution (0·73 gMn++/l/d) was at 1 per cent (w/v) molasses in a stirred reactor.Where leaching organisms were separated from sterile ore by a bacteria impermeable membrane leaching was shown to be some 20 per cent due to diffusible metabolites and 80 per cent due to a direct contact between the bacteria and the ore particle's surfaces.

THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

A method is described for the rapid and effective production of polished section mounts of ore and mineral particulates to the standards required for automated image analysis. This requires mounting without segregation of particles by mass or density, and it is also preferable to avoid having particles in contact so that they can be recognised as individuals. To achieve this, the particle samples are first split to an appropriate degree in a rotary riffle, and the sub-sample mechanically diluted and thoroughly mixed with an inert filler of the same size range as the particles. Just sufficient epoxy resin is added to make the mixture fluid. During setting, the ore particles are mechanically supported by the inert filler particles, thus maintaining the particles in a random three-dimensional distribution. A rapid two-stage grinding process, based on the successive use of 600 mesh silicon carbide and 1200 mesh (10 um) corundum on cast iron plates, is followed by three stages of mechanical diamond polishing on cloth laps. Hand polishing is entirely avoided, as is the use of papers.

THE furnace described in this paper was installed and has been used by the writer for the melting of rich gold-bearing material, and has given complete satisfaction. It may, therefore, prove of interest to other metallurgists who are faced with a similarproblem. A furnace of this type should be most suitable for the reduction of "cyanide preeipitate," "charcoal ash," "anode sludge," &c. formerly the melting was done in fire-clay crucibles, using coke or crude oil as fuel, but this method is costly, slow, and unsatisfactory. A small water-jacketed blastfurnace was also tried on this material after briquetting it, but was discarded in favour of the electric furnace. The furnace may be described as a simple form of the Heroult resistance furnace, with an adjustable upper electrode and a fixed bottom electrode. This is in accordanee with Stansfield's classification of electric furnaces. The heating is mostly due to the resistance offered the current by the molten slag. The melting chamber consists of a steel drum 14 in. in diameter and 21 in. high, and is lined with silica bricks specially made to fit the shell. The internal diameter is G in. The bricks contain 92 % silica, are made from calcined quartzite bonded with fireclay, and are similar in composition to those used for lining steel converters. They are set in a mixture of finely-ground quartzite and clay, and well dried out. The shell is bolted to a steel plate, which forms the decking of a truck running on rails, so that the furnace can be moved under ahood for carrying off the fumes. A cast-iron slag spout is bolted to the shell below the tapping hole, which is 4 in. from the bottom of the shell. During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. The subject which I have chosen for my paper is one that I am sure has occurred to the minds of nearly every mining man on these goldfields at some time or other. I refer to the carrying out of hydraulic mining on a fairly large scale on some ofthe alluvial areas of the West Australian goldfields. There are many, no doubt, who have the question ready at the present moment, "But where is the water coming from? " However, the great difficulties in the way are not due to the want of natural facilities, but due to the fact that sufficiently large areas cannot be leased for this purpose under the present Mining Act. Now, ever since the inception of the West Australian goldfields there has been the old familiar cry when referring to some alluvial gully or flat, "I wish I had a head of water to sluice that ground," but what seems an impossibility at times can be brought to a very great possibility by the use of a little thought and the expenditure of the necessary capital. This is so as regards West Australia with sluicing which, in spite of the its having so many detractors, can be carried out successfully in certain localities if the ordinary facilities on the part of the Govenment are given, and on the other hand the necessary capital is supplied. Alluvial gold areas, I propose now to draw your attention to first of all, the numerous alluvial areas that exist around Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, Bulong, Kurnalpi and many other centres.
