The following paper on the development of processes for the treatment of crude ore, accumulated dumps of tailing and slime at Broken Hill, has been prepared by a committee of the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, with the object of recording, in chronological order, the developments of the various processes which have led up to the metallurgical practice of the present day.

A weak airborne radiometric anomaly was examined in the field and the presence of uranium confirmed. Rotary-percussion drilling showed the presence of uranium but a subsequent programme of diamond and rotary percussion drilling indicated that the concentration of uranium was uneconomic. Within the tufts and volcanics of the prospect the uranium existed as uranyl phosphates within the oxidized zone. Geological mapping and the diamond drill core showed that the Stag Creek Volcanics are part of the Lower Proterozoic Masson Formation, probably with member status, rather than the expression of an Archaean basement ridge. This change in the interpretation of the fundamental structure of the Pine Creek Geosyncline has led to a reexamination of the stratigraphy and to suggestions which differ from the current concept.

Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

IT is not intended that this paper should be regarded as an account of the geology of the Lyell district. It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. The attempt has been made to present certain salient features, omitting a mass of detail, which, although important in the complete investigation and understanding of the economic geology, yet would be confusing to a group of geologists making a short visit. The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

The Estonia Mine, operated by Eesti Energia Kaevandused AS (EEK), the mining division of the Estonian Government's energy company, Eesti Energia AS, is a large room and pillar mine located in Eastern Estonia. It supplied approximately 4.9 Mt/a of oil shale in financial year ending 2010, which is used for electricity and shale oil generation. Due to the Estonian climate and the power station's need for a dry product, Estonia Mine has developed a planning system where short-term demands of the power stations dictate the schedule. Such an arrangement requires maximising flexibility and consequently the mine only operated for 199 days in 2010.The footprint plays a key role in achieving mass mining rates as the 12 km + 12 km lease area allows the mine to split into mining districts that act independently of each other and maximise the number of work areas available. Coupled with this, the geology of the mine is relatively homogenous over the mining lease, simplifying the mine design and production methods.During the last five years, EEK has commissioned a comprehensive conveyor network. Consequently, material handling only requires loaders to dump oil shale direct from the production face onto a chain conveyor that feeds the conveyor network that ultimately supplies the enrichment plant. Dewatering is also of critical importance, with 90 Mm3 of water discharged annually. EEK uses large trenches up to 3.5 m deep and 1.2 m wide to channel groundwater. Track mounted mechanical saws are used to cut slots in the floor, to control overbreak in blasting these trenches.EEK has introduced Salzgitter Machinenbau GB 280S auger drills that drill three 280 mm diameter holes simultaneously. This has improved void hole drilling times and reduced the drilling required for each face, reducing the overall production cycle time. Blasting activities have also been decoupled from other mining activities negating the need for firing times through the use of small independent firings, required to control vibrations.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. It is a great honour to be privileged to address The Institute for a second time as President and I appreciate it more than I can say. Eight years ago in Hobart I tried to cover the development of the mineral industry in Tasmania. That was a general subject. Tonight I want to be more specific - I propose to talk to you about rutile.The choice of subject for a Presidential Address is never easy. One is addressing an informed audience and the best one can do is to try to crystallize a particular subject and to present it in a form that willbe of interest to those who listen.I looked carefully at the addresses given by our Presidents over the past seven or eight years. The titles are impressive, the content excellent, and the length, as published, much greater than I had hoped.It is therefore with some trepidation that I have chosen as a subject one only of the three crystal forms of titanium dioxide. This subject is not as limited as may at first appear.There are two aspects with which I can deal - the mineral itself, which has become familiar as the major product of the East Coast beach sand operations, and the lesser-known "synthetic" product, which is the major pigment in almost all the white paints in common use today, and in cosmetics and white-walled tyres and toothpaste, and even the better types of fine papers. The synthetic form of rutile is' the "whitest"of white pigments.

The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

The Otago Schist is being subdivided on a regional scale into structurally, metamorphically and lithologically distinct blocks. Differences between blocks are subtle, and difficult to map in the field. Boundaries are late-metamorphic or immediately post-metamorphic in origin, and are different from later brittle faults which disrupt the schist. Mapping of late-post-metamorphic structural discontinuities has direct application for basic grassroots exploration in the Otago Schist. The mineralised (and currently mined) Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone forms a regional scale boundary between a block dominated by politic schist and a block with massive psammitic schist, pelitic schist, and minor greenschist and chert. The HMSZ forms a metamorphic discontinuity, with garnet and biotite in the underlying schist, and neither index minerals apparent in the overlying schist. The HMSZ is also a structural boundary between domains with differing lineation orientations. The HMSZ can not yet be traced along strike to the northwest to the Rock and Pillar Range, where the only major discontinuities recognised are the Caples-Torlesse boundary and a normal fault separating low grade from high grade schist. Structural and lithological discontinuities in the Dunstan Range break the range up into distinct structural blocks, two of which are separated by the gold-mineralised Rise and Shine Shear Zone.

Studies of the Main Seam in the Rapahoe Sector of Greymouth Coalfield have shown that the proportions of palynomorphs and palynomorph groups vary vertically within the seam, but remain laterally consistent. Subsequent examinations of other seams in the Rapahoe Sector have demonstrated that the changes in palynomorph proportions observed in the Main Seam are specific to that seam, effectively providing a seam 'fingerprint'. Such a characteristic signature may be used to identify the Main Seam where faulting or seam splitting confuses seam correlation between drillhole intersections. Palynomorph assemblages are derived from the original plants which formed the peat mire, and yield information on mire conditions such as climate, mineral matter input and chemistry. These depositional factors influence coal properties such as mineral content, volatile matter yields and coal breakability. Palynological data can therefore assist in development of depositional lTIodels for prediction of coal quality variations. Several other, thiner seams in the Rapahoe Sector have been demonstrated to also contain recognisable palynomorph assemblages, suggesting that other seams may also possess distinct palynomorph abundance profiles.

Except for uranium search, conventional oil well logging techniques are relatively little-used in mining exploration. The main reasons for this are cost and an apparent lack of awareness of the potential use of the methods in the search for ore. However, relatively inexpensive portable units are currently available for performing the simpler electrical and radiometric logs in diamond drill holes.The emphasis in oil exploration logging programmes is largely on the estimation of porosity. In most mineral work, however, porosity is not very significant, and factors such as mineral conductivity and radioactivity assume an important role.The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) during a programme to explore for uranium and associated base metals in the area east of Rum Jungle, N.T., carried out electrical and radiometric logging of diamond drill holes as a routine part of their investigations. Case histories are described in which the logs were used to aid in defining stratigraphic sequences and transgressive structures in base-metal prospects. Some surface geophysicalanomalies were explained by the logging: induced polarization and electromagnetic anomalies were related to black slate; and self-potential anomalies were related to oxidation of pyrite black slate, or apparent electrokineticeffects in the black slate. The logs provided an objective appraisal of the rock units penetrated and thereby helped to differentiate lithologies.Borehole logging, including newer techniques such as downhole analysis, could be done in geological and geophysical investigations in other areas for a relatively small cost with a considerable potential gain of information.

Where pasture production is the intended land use of the areas to be reclaimed, the creation of a suitable growing +medium is a major objective. To achieve this land reclaimers require a sound understanding of the proposed mining plan and a knowledge of the physical, biological and chemical properties of materials intended for resurfacing disturbed areas. Where the original soil is not being replaced in its natural state, research is usually required to determine an alternative growing medium. Results from field research conducted on waste material from the Waihi Gold mine are reported with emphasis on the significance of soil depth in relation to pasture production in this environment.  Problems in extrapolating field research to large scale operations are also considered.   Essentially the requirements for successful pasture production, on surrogate growing medium, are akin to conventional approaches used in New Zealand in the development of unimproved agricultural land. High inputs of fertiliser are initially needed, especially where volcanic soil is used, and careful management of pastures and soils is required to minimise soil erosion and create a sustainable system. In the first three to five years of pasture production, grazing use of the land requires to be dictated by pasture availability and soil conditions and not by animal feed requirements. The use of light stock (young dairy or sheep) is recommended.   Successful land restoration requires a team approach by a range of cooperative specialists including engineers, soil scientists, farm managers, agricultural contractors, landscape architects and environmental officers.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

Copper in zinc/lead sinter charged to the Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, concentrates in a complex lead dross which forms as the bullion is cooled to around 400°C. The 0.35 mm portion of this dross, containing approximatelY 67 per cent of the total copper, is treated via a hydrometallurgical route to produce 5000 tonne/yr of CuSO4 5H2O crystal.Around 3000 tonne/yr of copper-lead dross containing 49 per cent copper is leached at 55°C in continuous leach reactors with ammoniacal ammonium carbonate leach liquors to convert copper to soluble copper amine complexes. Leach ettlciencies of 80-85 per cent are obtained. Leach residues are repulped with ammoniacal liquid diluents from the plant and heated in a four stage steam distillation unit to reduce ammonia levels to between 0.5 and 1.0 g/Iitre. The resultant slurry is directed to an effluent treatment plant for final treatment, and separation and return of solids to the sinter plant.Copper is extracted from leach liquor by solvent extraction techniques based on the use of L1X 54 diluted 3:1 with Shellsol 2046 to give a nominal copper loading of 30 g/litre. The loaded organic is contacted with a sulfuric acid solution of pH 5 to remove the bulk of ammonia and zinc, then stripped at 55°C with a 60 g/Iitre H2SO4 95 g/Iitre copper solution to yield a 15 g/Iitre H2SO4 125 g/Iitre copper solution.This liquor is fed to an adiabatic vacuum crvstalliser operating at 35°C and 5 kPa vacuum where crystals of CuSO4 5H2O are formed. Crystals are separated from mother liquor and washed in a two stage pusher centrifuge, then dried in a hot air rotary drier. The crystal product obtained is of a high chemical purity and readily conforms to both Australian and overseas standards.

In gold ores, the range of value disclosed by ordinary mine sampling is very wide, and the number of 'samples required for a reliable average is correspondingly great. Even where a large number of samples is available the weighted mean value of the samplesalmost invariably exceeds the true gold content. In operating mines this disparity is overcome by arbitrary reduction of high assays until reconciliation is achieved, but it is frequently necessary, especIallyin exploration, to base an estimate or to reach a decision on a relatively small number of samples from underground openings or even on a few drill hole intersections. In these circumstances, a decisive influence may be exercised by the weight allowed to high assays and to low grade intersections, both of which events are, of course, dependent on the metal distribution in the ore. Where sufficient data are available, statistical analysis will measure the risk involved, but as this information is seldom to be had, the final choice becomes largely a matter of personal judgment.With this problem in mind, a study was made some years ago of the distribution of values in four Western Australian gold ores, with the primary purpose of learning from actual ore-bodies of differing types, something of the metal distribution in the smallquantities of ore involved in individual routine mine samples, and of the importance in each case of high assays. Adequate and suitable data were available in .four cases, in three of which high assays were of frequent occurrence due to the presence of free gold. The results give concrete expression to well known differences of metal distribution, and it is proposed, firstly to record the observed distribution; secondly to examine some of the consequences of the differences in the distributions limd thirdly, to comment, in the light of this data, on the vexed question of the treatment of high assays. Standard statistical procedure was employed in the compilation of the data. The assays were classified by value into groups, each group covering a range of value of 1 dwt. per ton. Assays of less than 1.0 dwt. per ton form the first group; assays equal to or greater than 1.0 dwt. and less than 2.0 dwt. comprise the second group; those equal to or greater than 2.0 dwt. and less than 3.0 dwt. appear in the third group; and so on. Where the number of samples is large, it can be assumed that the mid-value of the group is the mean value of all the samples in the group, thus the mean values of the first three groups are 0.5 dwt., 1.5 dwt. and 2.5 dwt. respectively.The number of samples in the group is the frequency of the group, but for convenience of plotting this frequency is converted into percentage of all the samples in the series. In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. HYL developed a direct reduction process (DR) that does not require a reformer; it is called self-reforming process. Typically, direct reduction processes based on natural gas utilise a reformer unit to transform the natural gas into reducing agents (hydrogen and carbon monoxide). The reforming reactions are: CH4+H20-?3H2+CO CH4 + CO2 - 2H2 + 2CO These reforming units require a catalyst agent to promote the kinetics of the reforming reactions. The catalyst for these reactions is typically a metallic element such as nickel in a ceramic matrix; iron is also an excellent catalyst for the reforming reactions.

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. The Commission maintains a data base first computerised in 1957 and containing information from over 18 000 boreholes located mainly in the Latrobe Valley area. Some of the borehole derived information dates from the turn of the century, although most of it has been collected as a result of Commission investigations conducted over the past 40 years. The Resource Data Base contains not only information gained directly from the drilling itself but includes the results of chemical and physical testing on many hundreds of thousands of samples retrieved from boreholes. Replacement value of the Resource Data Base has been estimated to be around $200 million, and it's integrity and accessibility is clearly of paramount importance, not only to existing mining and power generating functions but to the future evaluation and use of the vast brown coal Resource.
