Development in the theory and practice of hearth drainage is reviewed. Difficulties in the hearth drainage were re- newed during late sixties and early seventies when the size of a blast furnace and the top pressure were increased to result in the increase in tapping rate. Hearth drainage was improved first by in- creased number of tapping and then decreased tapping rate as it was predicted by theoretical studies. State of the coke bed in the hearth, e.g., 'floating' or 'sitting-on' the hearth bottom, is discussed in relation with influential factors on it and its influence on the furnace operation. The 'sitting-on' coke bed is to be aimed at for the consistent furnace working and for the lower rate of erosion of the hearth refractory. As the continuous tapping became standard prac- tice in large blast furnaces, the interest in the basic research renewed. Prospect of the further research including mathematical modelling of the hearth drainage is discussed.

The irregular shape of the Rosebery orebody, coupled with the inconsistencies in grade over short strike lengths, has meant stoping blocks have had to be small to combat dilution and stability problems. In the past, each lens was divided into regular block sizes and developed up to five years before production commenced. There were two major drawbacks to this practice; firstly, existing development deteriorated over time therefore requiring rehabilitation prior to production. Secondly, the pre-determined blocks could not be easily changed to incorporate changes in mining technology or economic circumstances. Bearing these problems in mind, it was evident that any new lens development had to be designed to allow maximum flexibility. The lens being currently developed is J lens. It represents approximately 50 per cent of the current reserves tonnes, and 65 per cent of the zinc metal. Its importance to the mine's future cannot be over emphasised. At its core the lens is up to 25 m thick at grades of over 30 per cent zinc. The practice of dividing the orebody into levels and sublevels, with consequent crowns was no longer acceptable because of restrictions in stope design and potential loss of ore. To assist in the development planning of J lens, a geostatistical block model was applied in long section to graphically represent the lens. Areas of high zinc concentration, as well as zones of uneconomic material were identified by using the model. This has meant that the development could he targeted, enabling stope delineation to occur in the lens without significant ore loss. Because of limited development resources, and the need to bring J lens on-line in the near future, the development strategy has had to focus on 'just-in-time' principles, rather than accessing the whole lens from bottom, and progressing upwards. Tight development schedules have required individual stoping block to be developed on such factors as grade and available tonnes rather than as a vertical sequence.

A dynamic model of a dense medium circuit has been developed and tested against plant data. The model shows the response of the circuit to both controlled (changes in specific gravity set point or changes in circuit coal feed rate) and uncontrolled changes (changes in raw coal moisture, loss of raw coal feed) in operating conditions. The model is built up from dynamic models of the individual sumps, pumps, pipes, splitters, magnetic separators and automatic controllers in the circuit. The model can be used for design of automatic control loops and for investigation of possible process modifications such as changes in water addition points. This paper describes the model construction, the testing of the model against actual plant data and gives some examples of its use in investigating plant response to changes in operating conditions.

The Gramalote orebody is a large low-grade gold deposit situated in the San Roque municipality, 124 km north-east of Medellin in Antioquia, Colombia. It is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and B2Gold and is currently in Feasibility Study phase. In 2013 AGA requested CRCORE to undertake a preliminary study of the potential application at Gramalote of pre-concentration by screening, part of the Grade Engineering suite. 160 samples of coarse assay rejects (-3 mm) were tested and showed one of the strongest responses seen worldwide to that time, suggesting that about 70% of the gold could be recovered into 40% of the mass. This was seen as potentially markedly improving the Gramalote economics. A large-scale testing program was implemented on site to follow up these results. A total of 18 samples of 17 t each were mined along a pre-existing exploration adit. A complex test flowsheet allowed size fractions to be generated from the as-received material as well as after crushing to 53, 23 and 3 mm, all from the same head sample. The procedures were designed after carrying out a heterogeneity study to measure sampling errors. The coarser size fractions were designed to study the effect of crushing on upgrade response and predict the response on open-pit run-of-mine ore. The finer size fractions were designed to investigate means of predicting the upgrade response across the orebody. The large-scale testing closely confirmed the average upgrade response as predicted from drill core assay rejects but found that only the -53 mm crushed material accurately predicted the upgrade response of individual samples. Ore geochemistry was able to usefully distinguish samples with good and poor response. A small study on drill core suggested that, for Gramalote, fine crushed material distinguishes vein associated and disseminated values but not other factors that control actual outcomes.

A study was undertaken to quantify the differences in performance between a full-length encapsulated cable bolt and a partially encapsulated cable bolt. Much research has been reported on the differences in cable bolt design and operational parameters such as borehole diameter and grout type with much of this based on the Laboratory Short Encapsulation Pull Test (LSEPT). However, there is a gap in knowledge surrounding the effect of anchorage length on load transfer and cable bolt performance particularly with respect to the role of the bulb in modified cable bolt designs. The objective of this study was to expand the existing knowledge base of cable bolt performance with the intent of developing a revised design criterion. Alongside a comprehensive review of current cable support theory, design and practice, a series of pull tests was undertaken to compare each anchorage method using a high capacity modified cable bolt. The results serve to confirm earlier work on fully encapsulated anchorage. Both the peak load capacity and stiffness of the fully encapsulated cable bolt were nearly double that of the partially anchored cable bolt. When the tests were repeated in an oversized borehole, while there tended to be more variation in performance, there was little significant difference in the mean results. In addition to anchorage length, there are other factors that contribute to cable bolt performance including in order of sensitivity: embedment length, water-to-cement ratio of the grout, type of grout and borehole diameter. The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

Pipelines are the vital link in making natural gas available to a region and to individual mines. Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide ores of the American cordillera compose a distinctive genetic class. Discordant fea-tures of occurrence together with measured high-temperatures of formation indicate their essential epigenetic character and close spatial association with centers of thermal activity during evolution of the cordillera. Their metallogenic character is complex from region to region: Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn-Ag-Au represent extremes of composition and each may be identified with specific terranes of occurrence, notwithstand-ing an inferred common process of formation. Beyond the presence of a thermal center, other controls that may be identi-fied include apparent but obscure properties of primary perme-ability or chemistry of hosting strata, and secondary controls are imposed by stratigraphic differences in which permeability is strongly contrasted. Structures that act as channelways may be identified in some instances. Notwithstanding their intrinsic value, search for these ores is difficult and requires the solution of complex geochemical and three-dimensional geometric problems.

Improving the safety culture and performance of any operation is a fundamental goal of every mine operator. Methods of implementing, or changing a culture have developed from the early methods of operant conditioning, for example rewarding crews for achieving nominated safety milestones i.e. 3 months Lost Time Injury (LTI) free through to the current model of engaging a workforce through education and empowerment. As a large scale and mature operation with multiple contractors, Telfer has been exposed to numerous programs throughout its history. This has provided the opportunity to build on and complement these systems by integrating key elements from each. SAFE 360° is a new approach developed to engage the workforce in a holistic approach to encourage positive behaviours across all facets of an individual’s life which results in a focus on situational awareness at all times, rather than being workplace specific. It is based on three key modules: • Emotional Intelligence • Mindfulness • Situational Awareness Each module has a series of modules that help enhance the individual’s sense of self, leading to an ability to self-reflect and self-manage whilst empowering them with the moral courage to challenge their peers to raise standards. Since commencing this SAFE 360° behavioural safety risk management journey in November 2017, we have witnessed a change in the way our workforce engages with each other, their workplace and with management. There has been an increase in hazard perception, identification and ownership of issues, and we have seen a significant decrease in site TRIFR rate from 13.7 to 5.7 (as of April 2019). This paper will provide an overview of the program, how it has been implemented, case studies to demonstrate outcomes and KPIs used to measure effectiveness.

This paper outlines software development and design work carried out by Mincom Pty Ltd in collaboration with Capricorn Coal Management (CAPCOAL) for computer based design of rehabilitated strip mine landforms at German Creek Mine. Current developments and future application areas for this software are also discussed in relation to other mines in Central Queensland. The development program was initiated in response to statutory requirements placed on mining companies in 1990 to produce a five year Plan of Operations which was to include a contour plan of the final rehabilitated mine landform at the end of the five year planning period. This plan was to be submitted to the Department of Resource Industries (DRI) by 1 December 1990. Due to the limited time given to prepare the plan, a work program was formulated in collaboration with Mincom Pty Ltd to develop suitable software to carry out the design work and provide the required plans and quantities. The software had to include computer based methods to allow design of the proposed landform in line with the rehabilitation strategy adopted by CAPCOAL at the time.

The Kainantu area lies within the composite Scrapland terrane which is composed of Mesozoic metamorphic and intrusive units, overlain by Cenozoic marine sediments, volcanic and intrus-ive units and Quaternary fluvial sedi-ments.Four deformations (Dl, D2, D3, D4) are recognised within the Mesozoic sequences, which consist of greenschist to amphibolite facies schist derived from felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks and pelitic sediments. The second, third and fourth fold events are present in the Cenozoic sequence, and these rocks are broken by thrusts related to northwest trending D3 folds. South-dipping, possibly lystric, normal faults are recognised and may be related to uplift and exposure of the metamorphic rocks as core complexes.Known mineralisation in the area consists of gold and copper skarn deposits, porphyry copper deposits, shear-hosted gold deposits, epithermal vein deposits and gold placer deposits. Over 35 hard rock and 18 gold placer deposits are known within the area. Of significance are the Kathnell shear-hosted auriferous quartz veins; such structurally controlled veins may be more widespread than proposed prev-iously and offer a new exploration target.

A rotating disc geometry has been used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of the metals cadmium, lead and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu/Zn and Cu/Fe systems for which the rection rate was found to be completely solution-phase mass-transfer controlled. When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0.2 to 0.4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in e which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomeon was obseived in the Cu/Zn Cu/Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass ,..~sfer controlled.

The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The collection was gathered together through the generous aid of the University Geological Departments, Geological Surveys, and Natural History Museums of the several States of the Commonwealth, all of which contributed such specimens of local origin, as they possessed. The Worthing Mine near Hallett Cove. 20 km southwest of the cite of Adelaide, belongs to Aus- tralia's first mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851 (Figure 1). Oper- ations began in 1849 only six years after the com- mencement of metal mining in Australia at Glen Osmond. Although not as historically significant as Glen Osmond (1841), or the much larger copper mines of Kapunda (1844) or Burra (1845) its importance lies with its Cornish enginehouse and chimney. The Worthing enginehouse, built in 1851-1852 is the oldest remaining in Australia and certainly the most significant relic of Australia's first mining era. Six other stone enginehouses were built during that period: at Kapunda in 1848 and 1850: at Burra in 1849, 1850 and 1851; and at Tungkillo in 1849. All of these houses have long since dis- appeared although the foundations of one (Kapunda, 1850) still remain. The significance of the Worthing site is enhanced by its magnificant environmental setting in the bare, steep valley of Field River. Currently (1986) the Worthing Mine is the only site within the City of Marion which is on the Register of State Heritage Items. The site is also included in the Classified List of the National Trust of South Australia and on the Register of the National Estate.

This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

The design of composite materials for wear resistant service aims at com- bining two or more materials in such a way as to achieve unique and useful properties not generally available in any single homogeneous material. Properties and applications are presented of what might be described as a new generation of wear resistant materials, namely, metallic and part- metallic composites suitable for use in the high abrasion/moderate impact environment encountered in the crushing and screening of ore. Significant cost performance benefit can result from the use of such materials and several specific case histories are discussed. Some promising new developments, utilis- inn white iron and rubber, as yet in the field testing stage, are reviewed. Further comments are offered foreshadow- ing new composite developments, as yet untried but which appear to h,uve merit.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. Colour computer graphics should be an integral part of data preparation, and results interpretation and Presentation.

In late 2014 the Flinders Power Management Team was executing business improvement plans to ensure continued electricity generation until 2028 and beyond. Six months later, in June 2015, the Board announced the closure of the Flinders Power South Australian business, including the Leigh Creek Coal Mine, the Northern and Playford Power Stations located at Port Augusta and the 250km railway line. The announcement was preceded by a brief period of internal planning. A date was soon set for ceasing coal mining operations, being November 2015. The mine is unique in many ways. Located approximately 550km north of Adelaide the site has over 100 years of history and was formerly operated by the South Australian Government. Privatisation in 2000 saw the mine continue operation under Perpetual Leases from the South Australian Government. The leases included exemptions from multiple sections of the Mining Act 1971, obliging primary regulation under the Mines and Works Inspection Act 1920. The coal, being a low rank sub-bituminous brown coal, is prone to self-heating and spontaneous combustion. The mine and company town Leigh Creek were the economic and cultural heartbeat of the community. Facilities at the mine were shared by the community and vice versa. While many mines across Australia and the world enter periods of care and maintenance, few have been actively closed to the point of relinquishment (Bennett and Lacy, 2016). A swift decision to close, followed by a short mining operations shutdown period, presented significant technical and regulatory challenges for both the mine operator and for Regulators. The subsequent joint risk mapping process employed by Flinders Power and South Australian Mining Regulators was a unique real-world example of collaborative mine closure planning and execution. Lessons learnt are valuable for all mines, production facilities and for Regulators, even for those who may wrongly assume that closure is many years away. CITATION:Williams, B and Querzoli, A, 2018. The Mine Safety and Inspection Act, 1994 of Western Australia recognises the importance of ground control in underground mining. The recent safety performance of underground mining is summarised in terms of the most common causes of injury and fatal accidents. A review of current ground control practices is presented and the concepts of local and large-scale ground control are introduced. The need for a more systematic approach to ground control is considered to be directly related to requirement to improve safety performance. The new regulations will require that certain geotechnical issues be addressed during the life of a mine. To comply with the regulations it is suggested that a ground control management plan be developed for each mine. The geotechnical issues associated with the ground control management plan are reviewed and hazard recognition aspects discussed.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.
