As part or a programme to raise lead smelter capacity from 65.000 to 140.000 tons bullion per annum. one new 1000 sq. ft. updraught area sintering machine replaced eight small downdraught machines.The metallurgical specifications were based on and laboratory tests at Mount Isa. Existing practice filtering concentrate as part of the charge preparation system and discharging wet filter cake to mixing was retained. This dictated a hot return fines circuit to maintain the required feed moisture content at low return sinter ratios.The engineering specifications provided for cenlralized control of plant and process, minimum operating labour, high plant availabi;lity and highest standardsof hygeine. Crushing and conveying capacity was set to cater for the most optimistic level of sintering capacity.On start-up a number of major engineering and hygiene problems became apparent, in addition to normal teething troubles. These problems have largely been overcome and reliable operation. at less than optimum production rate is now being achieved.

The ConSep ACACIA Reactor is a device, which utilises a high intensity cyanidation process to achieve very high, usually near total, recovery of gold from gravity concentrates. The process utilises a fluidised bed and a chemical oxidant to enhance the gold dissolution kinetics to the point where the bulk of the dissolution occurs in a few hours. For convenience and security, most plants operate a 24-hour turn around. The product from the process is in the form of cathode gold ready for smelting by traditional means. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor performs a two-fold role. Firstly it increases gravity gold production, leading to a decreased CIP feed grade. Secondly, it removes slow leaching components from the plant leaching circuit. This two fold benefit leads to the following efficiencies: enhancement of the dissolution kinetics; enhancement of the adsorption kinetics; reduction of the gold load reporting to the carbon; a significant reduction of the ægold in circuitÆ lockup; and removal of slow leaching entities which can also result in a lowering of the required cyanide concentrations in the leaching circuit and a subsequent reduction in overall cyanide consumption. The above benefits are discussed in this paper, with a particular focus on the ConSep ACACIA ReactorÆs role in removing slow leaching components, with data generated over a 21-month period. Improvement in overall plant recovery via removal of slow leaching gold species is achieved in two ways. Firstly, some of the slow leaching entities, successfully leached under intensive cyanidation, are not always fully leached under plant conditions. This results in a lowering of the solid tailing. Secondly, the faster leaching kinetics achieved in the plant as a result of the removal of slow leaching entities results in faster and more complete adsorption of the dissolved gold onto activated carbon. This results in a lowering of the solution tailings. The construction and operation of the ConSep ACACIA Reactor is simple. Apart from the reactor body, which is a proprietary design, all components of the system are æoff the shelfÆ or specific to the siteÆs requirements. In operation of the fully automated version, a PLC controls a series of valves and pumps but except for a daily changeover process the only operating component for the bulk of the time is a relatively small solution pump. The process can be totally automated giving the security of a æhands freeÆ concentrate handling process up to the point where the product is presented as cathode gold. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold Australia (formerly Acacia Resources) for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production since February 1999. It has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, as of June 2003 there are eighteen full installations of the processing plant installed at mines owned and/or managed by Anglogold, Newmont, Placer Dome, Independence (formerly Lonrho), Sons of Gwalia and Harmony.

Technologies are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so; as they are seen as the means for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost reductions. A point of concern for Caterpillar is that we do not believe there is enough understanding of the infrastructure needed to support some of the future technologies, as well there is not enough utilisation of the current systems.

Successful development of coal seam gas (CSG) resources in low-rank coalfields such as the Powder River Basin has raised interest in CSG from low rank coal in New Zealand. Kenham Holdings Limited holds 12 Petroleum Exploration Permits (PEP) covering some of New ZealandÆs low-rank coal and lignite resources and has engaged CRL Energy Limited to assist in the systematic evaluation of the CSG potential of the permits. To date, exploration results from seven New Zealand coalfields reflect differences in coal type, rank, depositional environment and depth of burial between coalfields. Several of the explored coalfields are considered prospective for CSG. One of the most advanced Kenham exploration programmes is in the Hawkdun Coalfield, Central Otago.   The Hawkdun Coalfield contains a single, thick lignite seam with properties that are similar to the Powder River Basin. Preliminary results indicate the Hawkdun Coalfield is prospective for CSG with the potential to contain between 25 and 60 PJ of gas; enough to supply a 30MW power station for ten to 25 years. Further drilling is planned to investigate the economic viability of the Hawkdun Coalfield. The in situ permeability of the lignite, the amount and availability of free gas, gas saturation at depth and market opportunities will determine its economic viability. If initial pumping and production results in the planned exploration programme are promising, the Hawkdun Coalfield will be further developed with additional production drillholes to form a trial production pod.

The purpose of this paper is to outline current research on the Paparoa and, at the request of conference organisers, to present a general introduction to the geology of the Greymouth Coalfield as background to more specialised papers. Few results of my present work will be given; these can be presented at the next conference. Briefly, the research aims for an understanding of the controls which depositional environment has exerted on coal character, to be reached by a study of coal type and thickness, shape and extent of seams, integrated with a basinal analysis of the coal measures. An accurate description of the coalfield in these terms should facilitate prediction of subsurface trends, with possible application to the planning of drilling programs, and to mine development. Although study of Paparoa coal types is included here as only part of the research, coal type should be recognised as an important concept which has until revently been almost entirely neglected in New Zealand.

For the past 3 years Waihi as a community has been actively engaged in consultation about its future with regard to the environmental, cultural, economic and social viability. This has been made possible through the implementation of the Waihi Community Vision (WCV) process which bought together a diverse range of people and interests.   Through their collaboration and collective energies, they produced a montage of possibilities for the future of Waihi, known as the 2020 Vision. A proceeding evaluation process was adopted by the group to enable the myriad of projects to be assessed and prioritised in terms of the communityÆs social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual values.   From this came the desire to be involved in the implementation of these ideas and create an organisation that could facilitate the successful manifestation of the 2020 Vision and other suitable projects.   The Vision Waihi Trust (VWT) was formed in February 2006 and is intended to be a tool through which the community can address issues about its future sustainability. They will work collaboratively with community groups, Hauraki District Council and Newmont Waihi Gold to develop and implement innovative and practical solutions. It should be acknowledged that such outcomes are subject to influence by both external and internal factors and it is important to consider this when looking at sustainability issues.   Waihi is now at a very interesting stage of its development and has the opportunity to proactively design and implement plans to determine its future rather than just let things evolve. A town with a strong sense of its roots and with a strong community identity may be a more attractive as a place live and work. There are additional business opportunities which may also be stimulated by a community that takes charge of its own destiny.   The process that has been worked through over the past three years gives a solid foundation on which to build and must be viewed as positive community development. Waihi certainly has a unique proposition to take to the marketplace, based on its rich gold mining heritage and current modern day mining operations. This requires investigation, refinement and implementation and Vision Waihi Trust looks forward to building to a vibrant and prosperous Waihi in the years to come.

The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

He adds that subsequent reduction in plant performance and resulting increased maintenance costs occur. It is generally assumed that this statement is substantially correct as the fan handles the complete output from the mill, but with modern materials, reduction in performance and subsequent .maintenance are not now a problem. This consideration of handling the pulverised coal in the fan is more than offset by the advantage of operating the mill under suction which results in cleaner operating conditions, simpler feeder arrangements and elimination of complicated seals on the mill.and feeder unit. One would anticipate that after 40 years in the mineral industry it would be simple to project the trends at least 5 or 10 years into the future. However the last 20 years, 1950-1970, have been so different in the mineral industry from the years 1930-1950 that I suggest only 20 years or so are relevant to any forward projection.Those, of us that have been about during the last 40 years find it hard to relate the two periods.The first with the depression, low base metal prices, attempts to revive the gold industry, very little export of minerals, and finally World War II and the recovery period.The second, a period of unimagined discoveries and the reappraisal of a wide variety of minerals and metals-iron, coal, bauxite, beach sands, manganese, oil and gas, and nickel, to name but a few.The second period started early in the 1950s and was triggered off by the search for oil in Australia.Rough Range No. 1 was an important milestone in our history because it initiated a series of speculations and the re-examination of much of our thinking about our mineral resources. It lead to the discovery of bauxite and the start of a flourishing aluminium industry.The realization of the extent of the iron ore resources was another, major step and the influx of overseas capital and competence started the large wave of development made effective by the Japanese markets.The momentum of the late 1950s has carried us to where we are today and will undoubtedly carry us further forward in the next few years.All this development in the mineral industry has come at a time when our pastoral industries have reached a difficult period. Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

Samples of a refractory copper ore were examined to test their response to segregation roasting, flotation, and acetonitrile leaching. Recoveries in the segregation roasting stage were between 60 and 100 per cent, while flotation recoveries varied between 60 and 85 per cent in cleaner concentrates assaying 25-40 per cent copper.The fraction of the copper which could be leached from the concentrate by an acetonitrile/sulphuric acid/cupric ion leach solution varied from 16 to 97 per cent, the lower recoveries being correlated with the presence of sulphide in the concentrate.

Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. This study shows that the ventilation and gas management systems of the Parvadeh_1 mine are in line with the standards of Australian underground mines.CITATION:Hasheminasab, F, Aminossadati, S M and Bagherpour, R, 2017. The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. There is currently a worldwide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow characteristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for determining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0.0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦C - 319¦C. Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physicochemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage. Apparent viscosity increased sharply with increase in solids concentration and suspensions at higher concentration behaved as non Newtonian liquids. Viscosity decreased with increase in temperature; rate of decrease slowed down with increase in temperature.

One of the most important goals of the experiments is to determine deformation and strength of the rock specimen under applying triaxial load, the status of failure condition is one of the subjects which can be used in soil mechanic and foundation engineering applications. To investigate the effect of confining pressure on the triaxial test, the rock has been considered as bonded-particles method and has been simulated by particle flow code three dimensions (PFC3D). This model, does not have pre-existing microcracks and all the particles have the same size (2 mm diameter), equal to the real specimen shape. To compare the mechanical behavior and failure pattern of the numerical and experimental results at uniaxial and triaxial tests at the same conditions, the Young's modulus, Possion's ratio as well as maximum axial stress have been considered. On the other hand, the microcracks growth and change of failure pattern at the modelling of the uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining pressures up to failure point were reported. According to the experimental work, the number density of microcracks decreases from starting value and remains almost constant up to the failure beyond that point. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results of maximum axial stress and the Possion's ratio revealed good accordance. The initial number density of microcracks at the model was zero and increased while microcracking. Also, the sudden increment around the maximum stress was observed which is because of unstable growing of microcracks near the maximum stress. In all uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining stresses, the number density of microcracks during the failure remains almost constant which can be considered as a proof of failure occurring in the model. The experimental results indicate the similar trend as well.
